SATURDAY NIGHT is a frenetic dramatization of what happened behind the scenes during the ninety minutes leading up to the first broadcast of NBC's Saturday Night on October 11th, 1975, when a dynamic young producer named Lorne Michaels lead a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers in changing television forever. February's official theme is WOMEN IN CRISIS and people went through a crisis getting this movie made and then people went through a crisis watching it. Our one “biopic” this month and who else could it be about than Norma Jean Baker AKA Marilyn Monroe. There's a lot of Marilyn Monroe biopics to choose from but our theme is WOMEN IN CRISIS and never has the icon been portrayed in such a damaged way as she was in Andrew Dominik's controversial NC-17 Netflix release “BLONDE” starring Ana de Armas in a very underrated performance as Norma Jeane. It's loosely based on a novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates. It also stars Bobby Cannavale as Joe DiMaggio & Adrien Brody as Arthur Miller. There's talking fetuses in this movie, folks. This fever dream was rather divisive amongst audiences, as you can imagine, with it being relentless in ways that feel almost laughably insane. I mean, there's not much to laugh at unless you're Bob who would giggle through a funeral. That warped fuck. The talking fetus was funny though. I'm actually watching the movie right now as I type this up. Oh, she's on her way to meet the President. JFK, one of our most beloved and honored leaders. Ah, to be an outlaw in the wild west. Got nothing but a crew to back you up. Like really nothing. As one my favorite criminals Neil McCauley once said, "Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner." They were living this life. These guys slept outside and had like one outfit. No wonder they were desperate for some cash. Crazy that capitalism was what got them all in the end. I'm pretty sure that's the main point of both of these films, "The Assassinations of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" (written and directed by Andrew Dominik) as well as James' Mangolds remake of the 1957 classic, "3:10 to Yuma". Our "Alone for the Holidays" series concludes with our final episode of 2023, a discussion of Andrew Dominik's bleak 2012 crime drama KILLING THEM SOFTLY starring Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta and Richard Jenkins. Set against the backdrop of the 2008 financial crises, KILLING THEM SOFTLY follows a pair of low-level criminals pulling an opportunistic heist, then switches to the hit man hired to control the fallout. Based on the novel Cogan's Trade by George V. Higgins, KILLING THEM SOFTLY was largely dismissed by audiences upon release as too downbeat, but it's an honest and exhilarating movie of big ideas, expressing with great efficiency and poetry what it means to be alone America. KILLING THEM SOFTLY is currently available to stream for free on PlutoTV or Tubi, or with subscription to Prime Video.

The fallout 2008 financial crisis has been portrayed on film in a number of ways; from documentary's like Iniside Job (2010) and Capitalism: A Love Story (2009) to ficiton films "inspired" by the events like The Big Short (2015) and Margin Call (2011).  Andrew Dominik's Killing Them Softly (2012) takes a different approach. It starts with George V. Higgins' 1974 crime novel, itself the third in a series, that centers on a lower level crime syndicate in Boston. Then Dominik places that story in a 2008 New Orleans during the final weeks of the Obama/McCain presidential election.  We get into the obvious metaphors that occur when organized crime is compared to financial institutions. But, we also end up discussing the various ways that Nationalism can manifest itself in America; from George W. Bush, to Obama, to Trump and Biden.  We'll be dipping our toes back into this Systemic Risk topic, the intersection of the 2008 crisis and it's portrayal on film. Partially forgotten and possibly overshadowed by No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood upon its release, Assassination is absolutely an essential modern western. Brad Pitt plays Jesse James who is put on a pedestal by Casey Affleck's Robert Ford. As Ford idolizes and fawns over James and tries to become one of the gang, he learns the man and the myth do not align. A story about paranoia and disillusionment that is both poetic and dreamlike, elevated by Roger Deakins' cinematography and Nick Cave and Warren Ellis' epic score.Other topics include the woes of streaming, Kurt Russell battling Godzilla, what makes for a great film score, the sad Affleck brothers, and difficulties with tongue twister movie titles.Songs of the WeekBlame Brett by The BeachesReady Steady Go by Solid State RadioFrank and Jesse James by Warren ZevonRemainders Jukebox PlaylistWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter

Welcome to Season 4 of Not A Bomb, the podcast that reexamines some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history! This week, the guys tackle the criminally underseen American Western from 2007 (possibly one of the greatest years in cinema) - The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Based on the book of the same name, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, chronicles…you guessed it…the assassination of Jesse James. Even with its modest budget, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford failed to recoup its production budget and was only given a very limited theatrical release. Some critics, however, thought it was one of the best films of the year and this little seen Western received two academy award nominations. Listen as Troy and Brad discuss modern mob films, marvel at Roger Deakins, and decide if this is one of the best films of the last few decades. "A look at the rise to fame and the epic demise of actress Marilyn Monroe, one of the biggest stars in the world." Wow, Netflix couldn't even bother to give 2022's Netflix exclusive "Blonde" a fleshier description, huh? Oh, maybe because they showed PLENTY enough throughout the 3 hour runtime, SMH! The "reimagnined" retelling of Marilyn Monroe's life via the 2000 novel written by Joyce Carol Oates is 3 HOURS of "what the f*ck am I even watching" level weird! It's a shame too because while it's BEAUTIFULLY directed by Andrew Dominik, it's horribly fleshed out thanks to the FAKE source material!!! Was Marilyn Monroe really as DUMB as they make her look for almost 3 hours? Did JFK REALLY have Monroe dragged into his room while Jackie O just watched on the couch and CRIED about it?? WHAT MAN IN HIS RIGHT MIND WOULD EVER TURN DOWN THE CHANCE TO TEACH THE BEAUTIFUL ANA DE ARMAS SOME ENGLISH??? In this newest History Impossible conversation, I'm speaking with Greg Zink, the host of the Smoke Filled Rooms podcast, a new and up-and-coming show that gives us a deep dive into political true crime. I've been following Greg since he started his show in early 2022, beginning with a series on the Nuremberg Trials, and when he tackled a topic I had been considering doing myself ever since I threatened all of you with a return to Hollywood's scandalous history—namely, the death (and life) of Marilyn Monroe—I invited him onto History Impossible to discuss both it and the recent divisive Andrew Dominik (director of the sublime The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) pseudo-biopic of Marilyn Monroe, 2022's Blonde. In addition to discussing that film, we also examined how it took pretty decisive aim against Hollywood as it currently exists by highlighting the scum-baggery of Hollywood in the 1950s and 1960s (needless to say, controversial opinions—mostly my own—are voiced). We also examine how the film both succeeds and fails as a depiction of Marilyn Monroe's complexity as a human being, and how, in showing the problematic relationship Monroe had with JFK, essentially manages to toe the line of actual slander/libel (though it doesn't stop us from raking the Kennedy family over the coals later on). Following that discussion we delve into the mysterious circumstances surrounding Monroe's death that Greg so expertly explored in his own five-part series.Needless to say, it's a fun, controversial, and ultimately tragic ride (given the subject matter). But it was also a very enlightening and interesting conversation for me, given Greg's attention to detail in such a notorious potential case. You may never look at Hollywood the same way again.…History Impossible has been made possible by the following generous supporters on Patreon, Substack, and PayPal. Our reactions are analytical and emotional, and we work out the intense feelings about celebrity, power, and gender brought up by the film's often absurd provocations. And by the way, what are the gender dynamics at work here? Is this Andrea Dworkin sex-negative feminism disguised as arthouse shock therapy, or a brilliant, radical take on fame and desire? One thing we can agree on: Marilyn deserves better.  Listen to the whole episode
