This week, the boys head to the jungle for one of Amazon Studios' first films, James Gray's “The Lost City of Z”. That's pronounced “Zed” for you British purists. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson with a beard and glasses, and Sienna Miller. It was produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B and was SOMEHOW filmed on a $30 million budget, half of which was spent flying the dailies out of the actual Amazon jungle. "Blue Moon" is an American biographical comedy-drama film directed by Richard Linklater and written by Robert Kaplow. The film follows songwriter Lorenz Hart (Ethan Hawke) as he reflects on himself and his work on the opening night of "Oklahoma!," the iconic musical by his former colleague Richard Rodgers (Andrew Scott). It also stars Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Jonah Lees. The film had its world premiere at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance for Scott and received positive reviews for Kaplow's writing, Linklater's focused direction, and Hawke's multi-layered performance, with many calling it one of the best of his career. Hawke was kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about his experience working on the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which will be released in theaters on October 17th from Sony Pictures Classics. Thank you, and enjoy! After a whirlwind fashion week, The Run-Through is back with a culture-focused episode featuring actress Rose Byrne. The new Broadway play "Art" features three friends debating the value of one insanely expensive painting, and therefore the nature of art in general. Actor Bobby Cannavale, who stars in the play alongside Neil Patrick Harris and James Corden, discusses the show along with director Scott Ellis. "Art" runs through December 21.
Welcome to the daily 63rd New York Film Festival podcast. Today we're featuring two conversations with Richard Linklater and the teams of his two NYFF selections. First, NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim moderates a conversation with Linklater and Blue Moon's screenwriter Robert Kaplow, as well asd its stars Ethan Hawke, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott, followed by a conversation with Linklater and Nouvelle Vague's Zoey Deutch, Guillaume Marbeck, Aubry Dullin, and Michèle Pétin, moderated by NYFF programmer Florence Almozini. Blue Moon is a portrait of one crucial night in the melancholy life of legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart (played by Ethan Hawke, in a tour de force performance). The film is a surprising yet entirely fitting addition to the Richard Linklater canon. And the spirit of cinematic revolution is alive and well in Linklater's affectionate and wildly entertaining passion project, Nouvelle Vague, which transports the viewer back to a creative landmark: the 1959 making of Breathless by Jean-Luc Godard. Nouvelle Vague opens at Film at Lincoln Center on October 31st, with the first week of screenings presented on 35mm. Tickets are on sale now. The 63rd New York Film Festival is presented in partnership with Rolex. Get tickets at filmlinc.org.

Fran and Babs from Over/underrated podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Fran's choice Chef. Chef (2014) is a comedy drama road trip film, written, directed and starring Jon (Iron Man) Favreau. Also starring Sofía Vergara, John Leguizamo, Scarlett Johansson, Oliver Platt, Bobby Cannavale, Amy Sedaris, Emjay Anthony, and Dustin Hoffman, along with Robert Downey Jr. Miami Chef Carl Casper is the head chef at a popular LA restaurant but clashes with the restaurant owner over the menu. When he receives a negative food review from a prestigious food critic and blogger Ramsey Michel he unintentionally starts a Twitter (hello 2014!) spat. After a failed attempt to serve innovative cuisine to Michel and redeem his status, Casper quits and decides to take his food on the road in a food truck and drag his son along for the ride. Chef is a charming and easy going film, even if it is occasionally a vehicle for Favreau's ego. If you enjoy food and hold nostalgia for a time when Twitter was a fun social media platform then Chef is the film for you. Chef scores highly across all categories apart from repeat viewing to give an overall rating of 3.70. Send us a Question!MOVIE DISCUSSION: Kathryn joins Melvin to discuss Jon Favreau's grounded indie-style flick, Chef! The two explore themes of maturing and parenthood, the relationship between the artist and the observer, and the importance of passion in everyday life. Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 25-minutes talking about those insane A Minecraft Movie screenings where people are throwing their popcorn and bringing live chickens, and how that's wildly different to otherwise incredibly engaging fan screenings of The Room or Rocky Horror Picture Show. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Kathryn shares what it is about Chef that she really enjoys.Melvin compares Chef to Parks & Recreation, saying how it's a movie with conflict but ultimately everyone still kinda likes each other. It's fairly clear that Chef is somewhat an artistic response to John Favreau's experience with Marvel, Iron Man 2, and the subsequent critical response to it.Which food in the movie got us the most hungry. The movie explores the dynamics of the artist and the observer (or, critic), and Melvin spends some time categorizing what he thinks are variations of these archetypes.Chef depicts professionalism and the pursuit of maturity well.Sometimes eating food is like time travel.Seeking to live a life by design, not by default.Recommendations:Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat: Mastering the Elements of Good Cooking (2017) (Cookbook)Salt Fat Acid Heat (2018) (Cooking Show)Try new and exotic foods, and be adventurous with what you eat! No. 1 New York Times Bestselling author PATRICIA CORNWELL returns to BOOKSTORM Podcast to discuss IDENTITY UNKNOWN, her newest novel in the blockbuster Dr. Kay Scarpetta novels! This amazing series is about to launch on Amazon with an outstanding cast, including: Nicole Kidman (as Kay), Jamie Lee Curtis (Kay's sister, Dorothy), and Bobby Cannavale (as former detective Pete Marino)! Before she wrote, Patricia asked herself what makes her wonder ... and then she enthralled us with her plot about unnatural phenomena and our present reality. We asked her about the importance of the heart-felt, heart-broken and heart-healing relationships that she weaves into these characters. Is love a mystery all its own? We discussed the otherworldly things happening in the background of this story, including "the others." Is the evil we know -- ourselves -- the one that should concern us the most? Patricia address AI and our constantly evolving technologies, especially in forensics. And of course we talked about the victim: the brilliant Sal Dante Giordano. He was an Italian astrophysicist and inventor ... and Dr. Kay Scarpetta's lifelong friend. He evokes the Renaissance polymaths of the past. We went as deep as we went high into the cosmos! In our season finale, the importance of reinvention is never clearer than in the stories from playwright Gordon Farrell's career, where he had to keep coming back to what drew him to writing in the first place in order to continue moving forward. Gordon Farrell's play, "The Lifespan Of A Fact," starring Daniel Radcliffe, Tony-Award winner Cherry Jones, and Emmy Award winner Bobby Cannavale performed on Broadway from 2018 to 2019. It was co-written with Jeremy Kareken & David Murrell, directed by Leigh Silverman, and produced by eight-time Tony Award winner Jeffrey Richards. Gordon was trained as a playwright at the Yale School of Drama and went from there to work with major Hollywood studios, initially as a story analyst for Warner Brothers and Columbia Pictures, and eventually as a screenwriter. He has written for hire and sold screenplays to Universal Pictures, Warner Brothers, MGM and ITC. He has worked with Robert Simonds (producer of Big Daddy, The Wedding Singer); Neil Moritz (producer of XXX, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Fast and Furious) and Bruce Berman (producer of Matrix, Three Kings, Mad Max: Fury Road). Working in independent film, Gordon has written for and sold projects to NYC indie producer Norman Twain (producer of Lean on Me, Boycott, Scar, My Dog Tulip). Gordon's first independent screenplay, Girls Who Smoke, premiered in 2011. It went to be an official selection at over a dozen film festivals, ultimately winning the Audience Choice Award in Seattle at the Post Alley Film Festival. As a playwright, Gordon developed a trilogy of monologue plays for women, The Red Anthology, on New York's Lower East Side from 2009 to 2014. He developed it into an immersive walk through theater experience which ran Off-Broadway in 2024. His plays have also been produced in San Francisco, at the Alleyway Theatre in Buffalo, at the Yale School of Drama in New Haven, and at Primary Stages in New York. He authored the book for a series of award-winning musicals based on the life and death of Sherlock Holmes, which ran for three seasons in Buffalo, NY. He is the author of The Power of the Playwright's Vision, published by Heinemann Press in 2001 which has been translated internationally and is now a standard playwriting text on four continents. Director Ti West completes his X trilogy with his new movie MaXXXine. Mia Goth is back as Maxine Minx from the film X (2022). This time she is an aspiring actress in 1980s Hollywood seeking to put her adult film career behind her. Meanwhile, a killer known as the Night Stalker is roaming around Hollywood killing people and threatening Maxine. The film also stars Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon. The film seems like it could be a sleazy 80s slasher slam dunk for Mr. Ti West, but does he succeed? Tune into this hawt take to hear our reaction.

It is the second installment in West's X film series and a prequel to X (2022). Goth reprises her role as the title character, with a supporting cast featuring David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro. Pearl serves as an origin story for the title villain, whose fervent aspiration to become a movie star led to her committing violent acts on her family's Texas homestead in 1918. West began co-writing a prequel script stemming from his collaboration with Goth while filming X. Motivated by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cinema, filming started in New Zealand immediately after the first film, using X sets and the Avatar: The Way of Water crew and taking pandemic safety precautions. MaXXXine had its premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on June 24, 2024, and was released in the United States by A24 on July 5, 2024. The film grossed $21 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of the series.
It's the third film in a hot horror franchise AND it makes the hop to Hollywood, so the comparisons between MaXXXine (2024) and Scream 3 were inevitable — but are they a compliment or a criticism? In our latest episode of Spooky Tuesday, we're covering the newest (but perhaps not final) movie in Ti West's spooky saga starring Mia Goth. A direct sequel to 2022's X but coming on the heels of prequel Pearl, this flick has a tough job striking the right tone and trying to stand alone, but one thing we can say for it is that the accent work definitely makes it stand out.
