Moderator Annette Insdorf will interview Ethan Hawke after a screening of his new film, Blue Moon. The prolific actor, writer, director and musician offers a tour-de-force performance as the acerbic lyricist Lorenz Hart, whose songs include "My Funny Valentine," "The Lady Is a Tramp," and "Blue Moon." In addition to Hawke's Oscar-nominated performance opposite Denzel Washington in Training Day (2001), he is perhaps best known for indie collaborations with Richard Linklater on Boyhood (2014), Waking Life (2001), and the BEFORE trilogy (1995, 2004, 2013) – which he scripted with the director and co-star Julie Delpy. Among his other memorable films are First Reformed (2017), Born to Be Blue (2015), Good Kill (2014), Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007), Hamlet (2000), Gattaca (1997), and Dead Poets Society (1989). He has also directed both fiction and documentary, such as Wildcat (2023), The Last Movie Stars (2022), Blaze (2018), and Seymour: An Introduction (2006). From a brilliant screenplay by Robert Kaplow, Linklater elicits Hawke's greatest performance yet — incarnating the self-destructive Hart on the very night that his collaborator Richard Rodgers (Andrew Scott) has just opened Oklahoma! on Broadway with new partner Oscar Hammerstein II. Co-starring Bobby Cannavale and Margaret Qualley, Blue Moon is a revelation of Hawke's maturation as an artist.

For this Out Takes, we were excited to introduce you to ‘From All Sides’, a new Australian feature film that is having a special Q&A screening at the Sun Theatre in Yarraville on Friday January 30 that is described as a subversive, sexually frank drama about a seemingly average suburban middle-class, multiracial family that features a strikingly original fusion of steamy bisexual orgies, extramarital hookups, and dazzling classical Indian dance sequences. We wanted to know more about this exciting local queer film so we went straight to the source and spoke to its writer and director Bina Bhattacharya. This wonderful interview covered many important topics including her journey as a filmmaker, her passion for Western Sydney and importance of using it as a backdrop to tell modern Australian stories, the impact of racism on her storytelling and more. We concluded the show by looking at ‘Blue Moon’, the latest from award-winning director Richard Linklater that stars Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale and Andrew Scott and is set in New York City in 1943. Lacuesta esquiva el biopic convencional y opta por un documental que mezcla material doméstico nunca visto, grabaciones de estudio, diarios, entrevistas actuales con familiares y músicos cercanos, y una puesta en escena que ilumina tanto la energía creativa de Antonio como la sombra emocional que lo acompañó desde joven. Min 40: LA PELÍCULA DE TU VIDA, CON JULIÁN LOMINCHAR En la entrega de hoy nuestro invitado es Julián Lominchar, dibujante y animador toledano que ha vivido un año decisivo tras formar parte del equipo de Robot Dreams y ser admitido (esta misma semana) en la Academia de Cine. Un reconocimiento que confirma su proyección dentro de la animación española. Lominchar habla con la mirada limpia de quien se ha criado entre lápices, papel y sueños posibles, y por eso no sorprende que su elección para La película de tu vida sea el 'Pinocho' de 1940. Min 42: BSO: "DRÁCULA", de Danny Elfman (4 estrellas) La banda sonora de 'Drácula', compuesta por Danny Elfman, es un ejercicio de poderío musical en el que el autor recupera su faceta más gótica y sinfónica para construir un paisaje sonoro que respira deseo, amenaza y tragedia a partes iguales. Elfman articula el score como una sucesión de impulsos emocionales: cuerdas que se retuercen como si fuesen un hilo de sangre, metales que irrumpen con una gravedad casi litúrgica y coros que oscilan entre lo sagrado y lo profano, recordando por momentos la sensualidad oscura de 'Sleepy Hollow' y la teatralidad operística de su etapa más expresionista.

And the story itself is great! A simple tale of assassins, aka hitmen. A notorious hitman, Sam Hayden, who made a career of killing other assassins, wants out. But walking away is not that easy. He's got one last job to do, and that is to take out his rival Charles Mangold. Unfortunately, Hayden gets double-crossed by his boss, who has hits out on Mangold AND Hayden. Now marked for death, Hayden unexpectedly finds himself partnering with Mangold to outrun his boss and the third hitman in the mix. The film stars Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson with a beard and glasses, and Sienna Miller. It was produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B and was SOMEHOW filmed on a $30 million budget, half of which was spent flying the dailies out of the actual Amazon jungle. We get drinking with a few mini-reviews at the top, and Jeff must have started early because he recorded with his microphone facing the wrong way. "Blue Moon" is an American biographical comedy-drama film directed by Richard Linklater and written by Robert Kaplow. The film follows songwriter Lorenz Hart (Ethan Hawke) as he reflects on himself and his work on the opening night of "Oklahoma!," the iconic musical by his former colleague Richard Rodgers (Andrew Scott). It also stars Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Jonah Lees. The film had its world premiere at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance for Scott and received positive reviews for Kaplow's writing, Linklater's focused direction, and Hawke's multi-layered performance, with many calling it one of the best of his career. Blue Moon is a portrait of one crucial night in the melancholy life of legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart (played by Ethan Hawke, in a tour de force performance). The film is a surprising yet entirely fitting addition to the Richard Linklater canon. And the spirit of cinematic revolution is alive and well in Linklater's affectionate and wildly entertaining passion project, Nouvelle Vague, which transports the viewer back to a creative landmark: the 1959 making of Breathless by Jean-Luc Godard. Nouvelle Vague opens at Film at Lincoln Center on October 31st, with the first week of screenings presented on 35mm. Tickets are on sale now. Also starring Sofía Vergara, John Leguizamo, Scarlett Johansson, Oliver Platt, Bobby Cannavale, Amy Sedaris, Emjay Anthony, and Dustin Hoffman, along with Robert Downey Jr. Miami Chef Carl Casper is the head chef at a popular LA restaurant but clashes with the restaurant owner over the menu. When he receives a negative food review from a prestigious food critic and blogger Ramsey Michel he unintentionally starts a Twitter (hello 2014!) spat. After a failed attempt to serve innovative cuisine to Michel and redeem his status, Casper quits and decides to take his food on the road in a food truck and drag his son along for the ride. Chef is a charming and easy going film, even if it is occasionally a vehicle for Favreau's ego. If you enjoy food and hold nostalgia for a time when Twitter was a fun social media platform then Chef is the film for you. This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to discuss the 2024 film, Unstoppable. The film centers around the real life story of wrestler Anthony Robles (played by Jharrel Jerome), who was born with one leg and won a national championship in 2011 while competing at Arizona State University. The film also stars Jennifer Lopez, Don Cheadle, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, and Mykelti Williamson. 

The feature film Unstoppable is the true story of Anthony Robles, who became an NCAA Champion despite significant social challenges and having only one leg. A model of what determination and hard work can achieve, Anthony's story is an inspiration for everyone. The film is based on a book Robles wrote along with Austin Murphy. The film features an all-star ensemble cast including Jharrel Jerome, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña with Don Cheadle, and Jennifer Lopez. With the unwavering love and support of his devoted mother Judy (Jennifer Lopez) and the encouragement of his coaches, Anthony fights through adversity to earn a spot on the Arizona State Wrestling team. But it will demand everything he has, physically and mentally, to achieve his ultimate quest to become an NCAA Champion. In this episode, Robles explains his thoughts about seeing what he wrote in the book become a feature film. He discusses the issues his family faced, and how the film is about more than just his missing leg. He also revisits points in his life that were depicted in the film, and the challenges he faced while trying to pursue his collegiate wrestling career. He also spoke about his role in helping make the film and the reaction that he received from fans when he was wrestling, as well as the fan reaction he's received since the film was released.
