In our season finale, the importance of reinvention is never clearer than in the stories from playwright Gordon Farrell's career, where he had to keep coming back to what drew him to writing in the first place in order to continue moving forward. Gordon Farrell's play, "The Lifespan Of A Fact," starring Daniel Radcliffe, Tony-Award winner Cherry Jones, and Emmy Award winner Bobby Cannavale performed on Broadway from 2018 to 2019. It was co-written with Jeremy Kareken & David Murrell, directed by Leigh Silverman, and produced by eight-time Tony Award winner Jeffrey Richards. Gordon was trained as a playwright at the Yale School of Drama and went from there to work with major Hollywood studios, initially as a story analyst for Warner Brothers and Columbia Pictures, and eventually as a screenwriter. He has written for hire and sold screenplays to Universal Pictures, Warner Brothers, MGM and ITC. He has worked with Robert Simonds (producer of Big Daddy, The Wedding Singer); Neil Moritz (producer of XXX, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Fast and Furious) and Bruce Berman (producer of Matrix, Three Kings, Mad Max: Fury Road). Working in independent film, Gordon has written for and sold projects to NYC indie producer Norman Twain (producer of Lean on Me, Boycott, Scar, My Dog Tulip). Gordon's first independent screenplay, Girls Who Smoke, premiered in 2011. It went to be an official selection at over a dozen film festivals, ultimately winning the Audience Choice Award in Seattle at the Post Alley Film Festival. As a playwright, Gordon developed a trilogy of monologue plays for women, The Red Anthology, on New York's Lower East Side from 2009 to 2014. He developed it into an immersive walk through theater experience which ran Off-Broadway in 2024. His plays have also been produced in San Francisco, at the Alleyway Theatre in Buffalo, at the Yale School of Drama in New Haven, and at Primary Stages in New York. He authored the book for a series of award-winning musicals based on the life and death of Sherlock Holmes, which ran for three seasons in Buffalo, NY. He is the author of The Power of the Playwright's Vision, published by Heinemann Press in 2001 which has been translated internationally and is now a standard playwriting text on four continents. The X film series consists of American horror films based on an original story written by Ti West. The series includes the original film X, its prequel Pearl (both 2022), and its sequel MaXXXine (2024). The overall plot of the movies centers on two characters, Maxine "Max" Minx and Pearl, both portrayed by Mia Goth. The first film, X, was met with critical acclaim,[1] and was a success at the box office. A tribute to slasher films of the past, the picture was deemed a horror film classic and impactful, anticipating its influence on the future of the genre.[2][3][4][5][6] Its prequel, Pearl, was also critically acclaimed, with some stating that it inadvertently improved the premise of the previous installment, and was also a success at the box office.[7][8] The third film, MaXXXine, was released on July 5, 2024.[9] It received generally favorable reviews from critics and became the highest grossing film in the series.[10] Pearl (subtitled An X-traordinary Origin Story) is a 2022 American psychological horror film directed, produced, and edited by Ti West, and co-written by West and Mia Goth. It is the second installment in West's X film series and a prequel to X (2022). Goth reprises her role as the title character, with a supporting cast featuring David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro. Pearl serves as an origin story for the title villain, whose fervent aspiration to become a movie star led to her committing violent acts on her family's Texas homestead in 1918. West began co-writing a prequel script stemming from his collaboration with Goth while filming X. Motivated by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cinema, filming started in New Zealand immediately after the first film, using X sets and the Avatar: The Way of Water crew and taking pandemic safety precautions. Pearl drew inspiration from the works of Douglas Sirk, Technicolor films like The Wizard of Oz (1939) and Mary Poppins (1964), and Disney films. It had its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2022, and was released in theaters in the United States on September 16, 2022, by A24. The film grossed over $10 million and received positive reviews from critics, with Goth's performance receiving considerable praise. A direct sequel to X, titled MaXXXine, was released on July 5, 2024, with Goth reprising her second role from the first film. MaXXXine is a 2024 American horror film written, directed, produced, and edited by Ti West. It is the third installment in West's X film series following X and Pearl (both 2022), serving as a direct sequel to the former. Mia Goth reprises her X role as Maxine Minx, starring alongside Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon. In the film, Maxine sets out for fame and success in 1980s Hollywood while being targeted by a mysterious killer. MaXXXine had its premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on June 24, 2024, and was released in the United States by A24 on July 5, 2024. The film grossed $21 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of the series.

It's the third film in a hot horror franchise AND it makes the hop to Hollywood, so the comparisons between MaXXXine (2024) and Scream 3 were inevitable — but are they a compliment or a criticism? In our latest episode of Spooky Tuesday, we're covering the newest (but perhaps not final) movie in Ti West's spooky saga starring Mia Goth. A direct sequel to 2022's X but coming on the heels of prequel Pearl, this flick has a tough job striking the right tone and trying to stand alone, but one thing we can say for it is that the accent work definitely makes it stand out. There have been some bizarre movie trilogies but the Ti West-directed “Pearl Trilogy” tries to take the bizarre trilogy crown. “Maxxxine” is the final movie in this bloody, murderous trilogy where all the movies feature two dynamic, driven, crazy ass women who will do anything for fame. One is Pearl and the other is Maxxxine. Mia Goth plays both parts in a provocatively intriguing way. We first saw Maxxxine in the first movie in this trilogy, “X.” Now in this third movie she's in 80's Hollywood trying to find that elusive fame that so many crave. She'll do anything to get it, including some things you just couldn't imagine. On top of that, there's a serial killer running around Hollywood doing things you just couldn't imagine. Maxxxine suddenly has something maybe chasing her while she chases fame. The body parts pile up even if the primo acting parts aren't piling up for Maxxxine. Also Kevin Bacon co-stars as a private detective who threatens Maxxxine with her bloody past. Will she survive this and get the fame she's looking for? Is it worth surviving traffic to get to the theater to find out? Check out this episode to find out! “Maxxxine” also stars Elizabeth Debicki, Giancarlo Esposito, Michelle Monaghan, Halsey, Charley Rowan McCain, Simon Prast, Deborah Geffner, Daniel Lench, Chloe Farnworth, Brad Swanick, Uli Latukefu, Susan Pingleton, Moses Sumney, Zachary Mooren, Ned Vaughn, Marcus LaVoi and Sophie Thatcher. Support the Show.Feel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

“From Robert De Niro, I learned not to force anything. Not to force your idea of how something should be and then go from there. Not, ‘Oh, this should be funny,' or ‘Oh, I'm going make you cry.' That's the wrong thing. You just need to think about the thing the character is experiencing and don't push it – have it happen. And he was obsessive with me about not trying to make anything funny and he would say to me, ‘Tony, it's very funny. But I want you to see the funny happen naturally from the authenticity of it,'” says Tony Spiridakis on working on the screenplay for Ezra with Robert De Niro who stars in the film, along with Bobby Cannavale, William A. Fitzgerald, and Rose Byrne.   In this episode of the Write On podcast, Spiridakis talks about how Ezra was inspired by his own journey of raising a son with autism. The film shows the very human side of parenting from the point of view of a standup comedian who loves his son desperately but doesn't know how best to help him. Part road movie, part comedy, Ezra tackles both the perils and heart-felt comedy of the father and son bond. Spiridakis also talks about getting cast as an actor in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, then unceremoniously getting let go from the film. He shares how he turned his disappointments as an actor into a career as a playwright, screenwriter, and director. “Okay, so the acting didn't pan out as I had hoped it would, but I'm still a storyteller and I think that's the beautiful thing about whatever it is that we gravitate towards – one superpower or another,” says Tony.
