Iceland Is Small But Here's Why That's Misleading

If you've ever looked at a map of Iceland and thought,  “Oh wow, it's tiny — we can totally see everything,” you are not alone. I hear this all the time. And honestly? It makes sense.  Iceland looks small on a map, but traveling through it is a very different experience. I'm going to explain why Iceland being ‘small' is actually misleading, and how that misunderstanding causes a lot of travelers to overpack their itineraries, underestimate drive times, and end up more stressed than they expected. How Map Illusion Makes Iceland’s Size Confusing Yes, Iceland is about the size of Kentucky.  But unlike many places, almost all travel happens on a single main road, and that road isn't a straight highway from point A to point B. Driving in Iceland involves: Winding roads One-lane bridges Changing weather Sudden stops because… well… waterfalls, sheep, and stunning landscapes For example, Reykjavík to Vík doesn't look far, but that drive alone can take 2.5 to 3 hours, and that's without stopping. And no one ever drives Iceland without stopping. Now add: Limited daylight in winter Weather delays Gravel roads Fatigue from constant visual stimulation Suddenly, “just one more stop” becomes the thing that breaks your day. This is where travelers get tripped up — they plan based on distance, not time. I've seen itineraries that say: “Golden Circle in the morning, South Coast in the afternoon.” Technically? Possible. Realistically? Exhausting. I Learned the Hard Way Even after living in Iceland for years, I still plan conservatively. Not because I can't do more, but because I've learned the hard way. There have been a few times when I stuffed my itinerary so much that I felt tired, stressed, and annoyed. Traveling felt more like a chore than an adventure. How to Realistically Plan a Trip to Iceland That is Personalized for You If you're planning a trip to Iceland and feeling overwhelmed by all the information out there, I want to invite you to my Live Iceland Trip Planning Workshop happening on January 31st, 2026. It is the first one of this year and is extremely helpful for getting a head start on planning your trip in Iceland for 2026 and beyond. This is a live, interactive workshop where I help you understand how to plan your trip realistically, from driving distances and timing, to choosing the right season, and building an itinerary that actually works. You'll also be able to ask me your questions in real time, which is honestly one of the most valuable parts. I also do a giveaway of Iceland related prizes at the end of the workshop. One prize is a one-one video consultation with me, which is normally all booked up because I have few slots open for that throughout the year. If you want clarity, confidence, and a solid plan instead of stress, here are is where you can secure your spot for the live workshop. Random Fact of the Episode The total length of the ring road or route 1 is 1,322 kilometres (821 mi), making it the longest ring road in Europe. It connects the majority of towns together in the most densely populated areas of the country. Icelandic Word of the Episode Tími (tee-mi) — Time A perfect reminder that in Iceland, planning by time, not distance, is what makes or breaks a trip. High performers often assume burnout means failure. But what if success feels exhausting because you're divided inside? This episode explores decision fatigue, role confusion, and why identity-level recalibration restores energy without losing drive. Why does success feel exhausting even when everything looks “right”?Many high performers, leaders, and high-capacity humans reach a point where the life they built no longer feels the way they expected it to feel. There's no obvious crisis. No failure to point to. Yet beneath the surface, there's decision fatigue, role confusion, and a quiet sense of depletion that rest alone doesn't resolve. In this episode of The Recalibration, Julie Holly introduces a rarely named truth: burnout is often not about overwork — it's about fragmentation. When your nervous system learns to regulate by context instead of identity, you begin living from multiple internal versions of yourself. Calm in one room. Braced in another. Present at home, vigilant with clients. Over time, this internal division creates success fatigue, spiritual exhaustion, and a loss of felt coherence — even in a life that looks objectively successful. This episode explores:Why burnout recovery often fails when identity misalignment goes unaddressedHow decision fatigue is compounded by internal role-switchingWhy “being on” all the time is a nervous-system strategy, not strengthThe difference between flexibility and fragmentationHow success without fulfillment often signals identity drift, not weaknessJulie introduces Identity-Level Recalibration (ILR) — not another mindset tactic or productivity strategy, but the root-level recalibration that makes every other tool effective again. ILR begins with the who, not the how, restoring internal coherence so peace, purpose, and productivity can coexist. This conversation is especially relevant for those navigating:high achiever burnoutleadership fatiguespiritual exhaustionsuccess that feels emptypressure to perform across rolesToday's Micro RecalibrationYou'll find this in the Recalibration Companion, but here's where to begin:Where do I feel most like myself — and where do I feel the most “on”?No fixing. Why does planning feel so overwhelming even when you are doing everything right?I see so many women blaming themselves for lack of discipline or consistency when the real issue is something deeper. When vision is unclear, every decision feels heavy, every task feels urgent, and planning starts to feel like pressure instead of support. That is not a motivation problem. It is a clarity problem. When vision comes first, strategy finally has something solid to stand on. Decisions get cleaner, follow through feels more natural, and momentum stops requiring force.✔️ Overthinking eases when there is a clear internal anchor guiding decisions✔️ Planning becomes supportive instead of draining✔️ Action feels aligned instead of reactiveIf you're tired of forcing execution, overthinking every move, and wondering why nothing feels easeful anymore, this conversation is for you. High performance leadership can feel exhausting even when nothing is “wrong.” If you're carrying responsibility, navigating decision fatigue, or questioning why success feels heavier than it should, this episode names what's really happening — and where relief begins.Leadership exhaustion doesn't always look like burnout. For many high-capacity humans, it shows up quietly — as decision fatigue, low-grade strain, role confusion, or the sense that success no longer feels the way it should. You're still functioning. Still performing. Still relied on. And yet, something feels heavier than it used to.In this episode of The Recalibration with Julie Holly, we explore why leadership can feel exhausting even when nothing is technically “wrong.” This conversation is for leaders, entrepreneurs, caregivers, executives, investors, and anyone carrying responsibility that lives inside the body — not just on a job description. You'll learn why this isn't a motivation problem or a mindset issue, and why traditional burnout recovery advice often misses the real source of fatigue. We name what happens when identity and responsibility quietly fuse over time — a pattern many experience as role confusion, success fatigue, or spiritual exhaustion. If you're in a career transition, life transition, or simply sensing that the role you're in no longer reflects who you're becoming, this episode offers orientation, relief, and truth — without asking you to blow up your life or perform your way out.In this episode, we explore:Why leadership fatigue isn't a failure — it's often misalignmentHow decision fatigue and over-responsibility impact the nervous systemWhat identity drift looks like in high-capacity humansWhy rest doesn't always restore when identity is carrying the loadHow presence over performance changes leadership from the inside outToday's Micro RecalibrationAsk yourself:What am I carrying right now that feels personal — not just professional? Then notice where you feel it in your body. No fixing. Just awareness.Team extension: When leaders stop normalizing over-carrying, teams become clearer, safer, and more resilient. From the 1940s to the 1960s, soil and water conservation measures transformed both the arid, erosion-prone environment of China's Loess Plateau and the lives of rural people. Remaking the Earth, Exhausting the People: The Burden of Conservation in Modern China (U Washington Press, 2025) by Dr. Micah Muscolino explores how the Chinese state imposed the burden of conservation on rural communities and how the communities navigated those demands. Weaving together archival research and oral history interviews, Dr. Muscolino demonstrates that for the inhabitants of China's countryside, conservation programs became part of an extractive mode of accumulation that intensified labor demands and entailed loss of control over resources.Dr. Muscolino recounts how changes to the physical environment played out in villages, on farms, and within households. His multitiered investigation uncovers the relationship between the forces of nature, Chinese state policies, and the embodied experiences of rural men and women. The book also highlights the contestations and compromises that the state's environmental interventions triggered in rural society. By illustrating how state-building and revolution in modern China altered human relationships with the natural world, Dr. Muscolino shows that examining everyday interactions with the environment is integral to understanding history from the perspectives of China's common people. He offers a timely reminder that environmental protection cannot come at the cost of marginalized communities' dignity, interests, or aspirations. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Caregiving services for seniors can easily cost more each year than what the average American makes. And health insurers, both government and private, may not provide the coverage people need. That leads many people to step in and do the work for free. But caregivers need to take care of themselves, too. That's something Dawnita Brown knows all too well, as a caregiver to both her parents, and founder of The Binti Circle. It's a group she founded for Black daughters like her who are doing caregiving work. For sponsor-free episodes of Consider This, sign up for Consider This+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org. Email us at considerthis@npr.org.This episode was produced by Alejandra Marquez Janse, with audio engineering by David Greenburg and Valentina Rodriguez Sanchez. Doing It Online : The Doable Online Marketing Podcast with Kate McKibbin

Hey there! I'm Kate from Hello Funnels, and in this episode of The Doing It Online podcast, I'm pulling back the curtain on the pivot that completely changed my business. When my son was born, I was selling a 4-week program that was doing okay—but the way I had to sell it? Exhausting launches and razor-thin profit margins. And the thought of doing that with a newborn? Yeah, no thanks. So I created something different. Something I didn't even know had a name at the time. And that one pivot became the absolute cornerstone of my business—generating over $5 million in the last six years.I'll walk you through exactly what I did, how I structured it (spoiler: I didn't start from scratch), what it looks like to actually run it day-to-day, and why this model is hands-down the most profitable and sustainable way I've ever worked.Trust me, this is the exact shift I'm seeing successful course creators make right now. And if you're ready to make it too, I've got something opening Monday that's going to walk you through it step-by-step.Let's jump in and talk about what's actually possible!Ready to make your own pivot?Get on the waitlist for The Pivot Project and get first access when doors open Monday: https://my.hellofunnels.co/waitlist

Ever feel like you're doing everything for everyone and still falling short? That's the mental load, and it might be silently sabotaging your business, your relationships, and your sanity. Today's guest is Dr. Morgan Cutlip: a psychologist, relationship expert, and author on a mission to help women feel whole, light, and deeply connected in all their relationships. With a PhD in psychology and a knack for translating research into real-life solutions, she's helped hundreds of thousands of people navigate the complexities of love, family, and partnership.  Her books Love Your Kids Without Losing Yourself and her upcoming title A Better Share tackle the emotional and mental responsibilities women disproportionately carry, especially when it comes to marriage, motherhood, and yes, running a business. If you've ever wondered why you're burnt out even when your partner or team is “helping,” or if you've struggled to balance being a boss and being present at home, this conversation is for you. We're diving into how the mental load affects your business, your boundaries, and your personal life, and what you can do to take some of that weight off. Want to go deeper?
