On this week's episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo sits down with Nicholas Stoller, the filmmaker behind "You're Cordially Invited," a star-packed wedding comedy hitting Prime Video on January 30. Stoller, the mind behind "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Neighbors," returns with another laugh-out-loud project, this time revolving around two weddings that are double-booked at the same venue. Will Ferrell steps in as the devoted (and increasingly unhinged) father of one bride, while Reese Witherspoon plays the protective, take-no-prisoners sister of the other? As expected, wedding warfare and chaos ensue. Rounding out the ensemble are Geraldine Viswanathan, Meredith Hagner, Jimmy Tatro, Rory Scovel, and Leanne Morgan. With wedding comedies being a well-worn path sub-genre in films —"The Wedding Singer," "Bridesmaids," "Wedding Crashers"—Nick Stoller had no intention of simply rehashing old formulas. In fact, he didn't even think of it as a “wedding movie” at first. “I just thought [Will and Reese] would have great chemistry together,” Stoller explained. “I've always been obsessed with Will, but I was also obsessed with Reese and really wanted to see her do a hard comedy again. She's just so funny.”

“The idea really came from my own life because I am a person who had a lot of very close male friends in college and remained close to a lot of them,” says Francesca Delbanco, “but a moment happened when people started getting married and coupling up and having children, when I noticed I was getting becoming closer friends with my friend's wives and Nick was becoming close to my friends and the world was calcifying into men being together and women being together.” Francesca noticed this in all of her worlds, such as the gym, the children's school, or even dinner parties. “Men would be talking to men and women would be talking to women. I started wondering why it had to be that way. When I looked around me, it wasn't just me. It was happening everywhere. If you did a survey in any given room, that's how it was broken up.” This all led to the idea for the series Platonic. Rose Byrne stars as Sylvia, a stay-at-home mom of three who is married to Charlie (Luke Macfarlane), a lawyer. She reconnects with her old friend Will, played by Seth Rogen, who is recently divorced and works at a brewery that he also partially owns. They haven't been close since college. “Why is it hard to maintain platonic friendships of the opposite gender as life goes along?” asks Francesca. “Is that inevitable or is it something in society or something each person determines for themselves and is there any fighting against it?” Nicholas adds, “And, there's something special about a male-female platonic friendship, so what do you lose when you don't have that?” Listen to my first interview with Nicholas Stoller for Bros back in Episode 367. Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

For our MOVIES ARE GAY theme we like to hit up, at least, one romcom and today's discussion had an unprecedented major studio presence for a gay film with a majority LGBTQ cast but it seemed to come and go fairly quietly. The Judd Apatow produced film directed by Nicholas Stoller, written by Billy Eichner and starring Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane may have had an uphill battle within an era where romantic comedies in general have become more and more rare. We're talking about the movie “BROS” from 2022 in which Bobby, a neurotic and loud NYC gay man with a podcast, gradually falls for a beefcake “bro-type” named Aaron. It's a lot like many romantic comedies in some ways while showing what is different about queer relationships. Very adult but seems like decent fodder for the romcom crowd. This didn't blow up the box office but perhaps this movie will linger over time with a gradual shift in overall perception? We will see. We're talking waaaaay deeper cuts than “BROS” this month but the future of gay romantic comedies may have been unfairly hoisted up “BROS” shoulders in today's shaky moviegoing landscape. Today we're taking a look at real-life Halloween candy horror stories, the few cases that made parents want to x-ray their kids' bags of treats at the hospital every year. Book Vs. Movie: The Adeventures of Captain Underpants The First Children's Book by Dav Pilkey Vs. the 2017 Movie The Margos end their Banned Book Month with a children's media empire, the Captain Underpants series, that has helped millions of kids who were not big fans of reading learn to love books. For some reason, this book and many of its sequels have been banned from libraries in America. In this episode, we try to dig into the popularity, the story behind Dav Pikley's creations, and why people across America are storming school library meetings to ban books. Dav Pilkey of Cleveland, Ohio, went to elementary school in the 1970s and was diagnosed with hyperactive disorder and dyslexia, making him want to avoid the constrictions of regular school life. He drew comic books, wrote stories, and was usually punished for not being able to sit still. Sitting at a desk alone in the school hallways, he created ‘Captain Underpants,” -a superhero who wore underwear and a cape because that is what most superheroes wear in action. In college, he wrote his first book World War Won, about the U.S./USSR arms scare, and won a national competition for student authors. In addition to Captain Underpants, the “Dragon Gets By” series, Dumb Bunnies, and Dog Man are among his many creations. The original Captain Underpants YA novel is about fourth graders George Beard and Harold Hutchins of Piqua, Ohio. They are best friends who write stories and pull lots of pranks at Jerome Horowitz Elementary School. Their teachers and principal are the main antagonists in their daily life, and their adventures are a naughty delight. We are talking fart, poop jokes galore, and using a hypnotizing ring to make their Principal Benny Krupp turn into Captain Underpants. The movie produced by DreamWorks is directed by Nicholas Stoller and has an incredible cast of comedic actors to bring the story to life. It's a delight and was such a hit that Netflix has plenty of Captain Underpants content. So between the book and the film, which did we like better? In this ep, the Margos discuss:Dav Pilkey and how he created so many children's books that click with “tough readers.”Why is this book on the “banned” list so often? The themes of the book The cast: Kevin Hart (George Beard,) Thomas Middleditch (Harold Hutchins,) Ed Helms (Principal Krupp/Captain Underpants,) Nick Kroll (Professor Poopypants,) Jordan Peale (Melvin Sneedly,) Kristen Schaal (Edith,) Brian Posehn (Morty Fyde,) and Dee Dee Rescher as Ms. Tara Ribble.Clips used:The boys in the principal's officeCaptain Underpants: The First Epic Movie 2017 trailerMeet teacher PoopypantsThe principal gets hypnotizedThe boys try to figure out the teacher's name using Captain UnderpantsWeird Al Yankovic theme song Captain UnderpantsMusic: “Think” by Adam LambertBook Vs. “I was obsessed with comedy writing as a kid,” said Nicholas Stoller. “I remember watching Saturday Night Live and not wanting to be the actors, but wanting to write the sketches. I don't even know how I knew that was a job.” As a screenwriter, Stoller has credits for Fun with Dick and Jane, Yes Man, Get Him to the Greek, The Muppets, Sex Tape, The Carmichael Show, Night School and Bros, many of which he also Directed, including Neighbors and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. “I'm excited Bros is going to be theatrically released, but a weird thing happened a few years ago where [studios] were like, ‘Comedies don't work in theaters.' Which is not true. Judd [Apatow] always says, ‘If The Hangover came out this weekend, it would make a billion dollars.'” For whatever reason, studios just stopped making as many theatrical comedies. They've instead gone to television, limited series, and leaned in to action comedies for a broader, global appeal. “I love going to see comedy in the movie theater. You get to have that experience with an audience, laughing and reacting.” “People say it's a business first, but it's not run like a business. If anyone thought about it like a business, there's a huge hole in the comedy department.” Subscribe for video interviews on YouTube: www.youtube.com/c/CreativePrinciples?sub_confirmation=1 If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? Comedy is not exactly in vogue among big studios, so when filmmakers Judd Apatow and Nicholas Stoller approached actor Billy Eichner about making ‘Bros,' the first big-studio, big-screen LGBTQ+ rom-com for Universal Pictures, he was skeptical. “I have an openly gay man in comedy for over 20 years,” he said, “and I am telling you that even the most gay-friendly execs at a major studio are not going to greenlight this movie. And even if they do, they're not going to let me tell it in an authentic, honest way.” The movie was greenlit, and now Eichner talks about starring on a feature film for the first time, the thrill of co-writing the script with Stoller and how a major movie studio came on board to make a gay romatic comedy came to life. But first, Kim Masters and Matt Belloni look into the return of The Golden Globes to NBC in 2023, and what it means for next year's awards season.
