COME ASHORE FOR THE NEW WATCH SKIP PLUS!Cupcake all but ordered WillDaBeast to see the new Ron Howard film solely because advanced word had Jude Law doing a “one for the history books” full frontal nude scene. And so it is: this week the Boyz review Ron Howard's historically based, “Survivor”-esque 1930's period drama “Eden” starring Law, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Bruehl (BARON ZEMO!), current controversial it-girl Sydney Sweeney, and Ana De Armas. Aside from the obvious visual DELIGHTS (warning: lots of breasts, penis, butt, and pregnancy talk/jokes), is this a return to prestige engrossing filmmaking from Howard or is “Eden” setting itself up to run afoul of potential multiple Razzie nominations (yes, at least one host thinks this is absolute dreck)? In the new Ron Howard movie, “Eden”, a group of disillusioned Europeans settles on a remote, uninhabited island in the Galápagos. They're inspired by a man, played by Jude Law, who came to the island and supposedly found happiness. They soon discover that their greatest threat isn't the brutal climate or deadly wildlife, but one another. Human nature is what it is after all. Sinful. As tensions spiral and desperation takes hold, a twisted power struggle unfolds, leading to betrayal, violence and death. Is it worth a trip to the theater to find out all that happens? Check out this episode of Movies Merica to find out! “Eden” also stars Ana De Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Bruhl, Sydney Sweeney, Jonathan Tittel, Felix Kammerer, Toby Wallace, Ignacio Gasparini, Richard Roxburghand Paul Gleeson. On this episode, Jason G and I review 'Ballerina', a spinoff set in the 'John Wick' universe between chapters three and four. We praise the film's action, calling it some of the best in the series, with standout scenes, such as a flamethrower sequence. I mention struggling to fully buy Ana de Armas as an action star, while Jason suggests the director's style may emphasize looks over grit. We also note the inclusion of Lance Reddick's character, filmed before his passing, and appreciate how the action feels intense but more grounded compared to other over-the-top set pieces in this universe. We give the movie an overall rating of 7 to 7.8 out of 10. The conversation concludes with thoughts on the box office and franchise. Despite a $90 million budget, the film made about $132 million worldwide, which may not cover total costs. However, it is performing well on VOD platforms. Lionsgate has not confirmed a 'Ballerina' sequel, but 'John Wick 5' is in development with Keanu Reeves returning. Thoughts? Comments? Do so on the blog here. Ron Howard's filmography is diverse, a product of a four decades-long career in Hollywood. He has directed Oscar-winning dramas such as A Beautiful Mind, audience pleasing comedies including Splash and more recently, documentaries. Yet, despite his vast filmmaking career, Howard's newest film Eden, still manages to offer something different from the director. Based on a true story, the film follows a group of German settlers in the 1930s who travel to the Galapagos Islands looking for escape. Escapism soon turns to survival and a struggle for power. The film stars, Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby, and Ana De Armas. Director and producer, Ron Howard, joins Larry Mantle on FilmWeek to discuss the film Eden and how it fits into Howard’s larger legacy as a filmmaker. This week, we're stepping into the ring with Hands of Stone (2016), the boxing biopic that tells the story of legendary Panamanian fighter Roberto Durán.Directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz, Hands of Stone chronicles the life and career of Roberto Durán, one of boxing's most iconic and ferocious competitors. The film stars Édgar Ramírez as Durán, delivering a fiery performance that captures both his aggressive fighting style and his turbulent personal life. Robert De Niro plays legendary trainer Ray Arcel, bringing a more restrained, mentor-like energy to balance the film's intensity. The movie charts Durán's rise from a poverty-stricken childhood in Panama to becoming a world champion, with his infamous 1980 "No Más" fight against Sugar Ray Leonard (played by Usher Raymond) serving as the emotional and narrative centerpiece. Alongside the boxing drama, Hands of Stone explores themes of national pride, personal redemption, and the costs of fame.Robert De Niro, no stranger to boxing films after Raging Bull, plays Arcel with quiet wisdom. His scenes with Ramírez are a highlight, exploring the mentor-protégé dynamic with subtlety. While Hands of Stone doesn't reinvent the boxing biopic, it hits many satisfying beats. It's a film about second chances, pride, and perseverance — all wrapped in some bruising fight scenes. Édgar Ramírez gives a passionate, physical performance, and De Niro's presence lends the film extra gravitas. Some of the storytelling can feel a bit formulaic, and it occasionally leans too heavily on sports movie clichés, but for fans of boxing dramas, it delivers plenty of punches — both literal and emotional.Join us in the episode as we discuss Durán's legacy, the art of the boxing biopic, and whether this one truly goes the distance.

Josh is joined by John Wick Universe Correspondent Daniel Lima to talk about the newest film from the world of John Wick, "Ballerina." They discuss Ana De Armas' performance in the lead role, the different weapons the film made use of that felt distinct from other John Wick movies, if the world expanded in interesting, worthwhile ways with regards to new characters and location within the course of the film and much more!
You know the John Wick movies are successful when they're making spin-off TV series and movies off of that franchise. This week we get the first, and most assuredly, not the last John Wick spin-off movie, “Ballerina.” Ana De Armas takes the starring role in this as another assassin who, like John Wick, was trained to kill by the Ruska Roma criminal organization. Perhaps she's even more lethal than Wick because no one expects her to be an assassin. We saw a preview of De Armas kicking butt as an agent in the Bond film “No Time To Die.” Here she gets a whole movie to showcase her killer talents. In this, her main objective is to use her particular set of skills to find her parent's killers and no one better get in her way. Is it worth checking out this action at the theater? Check out this episode to find out. “Ballerina” also stars Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Angelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Ava Joyce McCarthy, Juliet Doherty, Norman Reedus, Lance Reddick, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, David Castaneda, Victoria Comte and Robert Maaser. This week on the I Hate Critics Movie Review Podcast, we cover a wild mix of genres—stylish revenge thrillers, quirky capers, shark horror, supernatural suspense, and a cult classic thriller. Ballerina Directed by Len Wiseman Starring Ana de Armas, Keanu Reeves Set in the John Wick universe, Ballerina follows Eve Macarro, trained by the deadly Ruska Roma, as she unleashes her skills on an army of assassins in her quest to avenge her father's murder. The Phoenician Scheme Directed by Wes Anderson Starring Benicio Del Toro, Mia Threapleton In classic Anderson fashion, this film delivers a visually whimsical and tonally oddball tale of inheritance, danger, and absurdity as a nun becomes the unlikely heir to a business empire under siege from international foes. Dangerous Animals Directed by Sean Byrne Starring Hassie Harrison A sun-soaked nightmare with blood in the water. A surfer named Zephyr is held captive by a shark-worshiping serial killer aboard his boat, racing to escape before becoming bait in a gruesome ritual. Bring Her Back Directed by Michael and Danny Philippou Starring Sally Hawkins, Billy Barratt, Sora Wong From the creators of Talk to Me comes another chilling descent into supernatural terror. A foster home hides sinister secrets when two siblings witness a horrifying ritual that puts their souls—and sanity—at risk. Classic Review: Mute Witness (1995) Directed by Anthony Waller Starring Marina Zudina, Faye Ripley This criminally underrated ‘90s thriller follows a mute makeup artist who accidentally stumbles upon a snuff film being made in a Russian studio. What follows is a tense and terrifying game of survival against the Russian mafia.
The boys are back and this time we're entering the world of John Wick with the Ana De Armas spinoff Ballerina. Can this spinoff live up to the action packed franchise from which it was born?
From the World of John Wick....this is techically a spin-off which takes place between the events of John Wick Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, the focus here is on Eve who is played by Ana De Armas. Eve is an assassin who was initially trainied as as a ballerina, hence the title! The Director of her "academy" is Angelica Huston who was also featured as a character in Chapter 3. Eve is seeking revenge against a rival organization which murdered her father when she was a young child - that organization is lead by The Chancellor played by Gabriel Byrne. And off she goes from New York City throughout Northern Europe on an increasingly violent adventure where she is tasked with defeating rival assassins through a variety of methods including her fists, grenades, flame throwers, knives, and dishes. ;) Along the way, she also encounters the "Baba Yaga" himself, John Wick once again played by Keanu Reeves. Ken Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard, Underworld) directs with a supporting cast also including Ian McShane, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Norman Reedus, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, and in sadly his final on-screen appearance, the late great Lance Reddick. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of June 6, 2025. Ana de Armas holds her own in an action-packed entry to the John Wick mythos in “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina," and yes, John himself (Keanu Reeves) does make an appearance. The latest Wes Anderson film hits theaters with its appreciative creativity and precision in "The Phoenician Scheme.” Still, despite solid performances (including those from Kate Winslet's daughter, Mia Threapleton), the narrative left Andy with sheer frustration due to its incomprehensibility. And for streaming choices, Andy recommends "Stick" on Apple TV+ starring Owen Wilson as a disgraced former golfer who tries to shepherd/coach a talented teenager onto the pro tour. The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics. Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen. Ana De Armas joins the John Wick-iverse in Ballerina. Wes Anderson continues to rinse and repeat his work with The Phoenician Scheme. Jai Courtney gives a swimmingly scary performance in Dangerous Animals. Predator: Killer of Killers is a more than worthy entry into the franchise.
