The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are staring into the madness of 2017's "The Evil Within," a self-financed horror movie from a wealthy Getty scion before he died of a drug overdose, and then going back to Orson Welles with his last movie, completed near 30 years after his death and available on Netflix. Both are artistic visions that consumed their artists, finished after their demise, and both present an interesting discussion. Available on Apple and Spotify Episode 352 includes: -R.I.P. James Caan, who we forgot to mention last episode. -More "Halloween" and "Jeepers Creepers" we don't care about. -"The Black Phone" is an enjoyable survival horror thriller with too many other kinds of movies competing for time. -Switch the Pitch -- "The Evil Within" / "The Other Side of the Wind" -The guys discuss at length (like 45+ minutes) about the final films for two artists finished years after their deaths. "The Evil Within" is a horror movie by Andrew Getty, and it's nightmarish and impressive and campy and crazy but works. "The Other Side of the Wind" was the movie Orson Welles tried completing for the last 15 years of his life, and it took an additional few decades to finally be completed by Netflix. The guys go into both movies problems, ambitions, artistic merits, and then combine into a new project sharing both of their key creative elements.

This episode we talk about two unclassifiable pieces of nightmare art from the darkest corners of the scum cinema cannon, both of which were released over a decade after the conclusion of principal photography when key members of cast and crew had long since died. It's an understandable struggle to imagine a film more strange and cursed that Andrew Getty's passion project The Evil Within but that's why it took a special kind of mind to imagine Flexing With Monty.

What happens when the heir to an evil oil empire spends 15 years and a ton of money making a psychological horror movie? Find out for yourself as the Maniacs […]
Andrew Getty spent 15 years making a horror movie, and it ended up killing him. Grandson of oil tycoon, J. Paul Getty, and cousin of John Paul Getty III, who was famously kidnapped and tortured as a 16-year-old boy in 1973, Andrew Getty became haunted by night terrors that were so vivid and horrifying that he decided the only way he could get rid of them was to channel all of his fear into a self-financed horror movie. Beginning in 2002, he spent the next 15 years, and 6 million dollars, meticulously executing his traumatic vision. Ultimately, he would succumb to obsession and tragically die while locked away in his Hollywood mansion editing the film. This is the story of Andrew Getty's descent into obsession, and the bizarre but mezmerizing movie that he made in the process that has gone largely unnoticed by the public. 01001001 01110011 00100000 01100001 01101110 01111001 01100010 01101111 01100100 01111001 00100000 01101111 01110101 01110100 00100000 01110100 01101000 01100101 01110010 01100101 00111111 Learn more about your ad choices. Making films can be rough. Budgets inflate, personalities clash, directors are on meth. Movie magic doesn't come easy. That is exactly what Adam Thomas and Thomas Mariani are dissecting this week on Double Edged Double Bill! This week, in honor of X-Men: Dark Phoenix shambling to theaters following a delays & reshoots, it's all about films with troubled productions. First up, our good feature The Evil Within, a horror film that took 15 years of production while being made by reclusive billionaire and meth addict Andrew Getty. Then, our bad feature is 50 Shades of Grey, the massively popular yet universally loathed erotic thriller which had author E.L. James hovering over the entire production. Together, our hosts ponder how to explain surreal nightmares, debate the investment of Dakota Johnson and pick the films for next week's episode on Samuel L. Jackson. So tune in now before this podcast goes even more over budget! Listen to Thomas' guest spots on the podcasts We Forgive You and The Horror Returns. Today we investigate exactly what is Mexican Sugar Dancing, then we go to the movies to explore the insanity that is "The Evil Within." Mexican Sugar Dancing is a phrase found on the Conspiracy Iceberg List. But it has an earlier origin: An obscure post on a Malaysian forum regarding fetishes. Is there any truth to the rumor that this practice involves partners from beyond the grave? Then, one man tries to turn his lifelong nightmares into a movie. Part therapy for him, part entertainment for us, and 100 parts of pure craziness equal "The Evil Within." Late in 2017, the Surgeons team were fortunate to sit down with horror icon, Michael Berryman, best known for his roles in The Hills Have Eyes, Weird Science, and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.We discuss his career and the impact he brought to the screen through the horror movie industry over the years.
Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. A talented yet troubled film maker named Andrew Getty put together one of the most visually interesting horror films in years. His untimely death didn’t allow him to see its final release, but 2017’s The Evil Within made it to VOD after many years in production; over 15 years to be more precise. Oddly with little notice. After years as part of the rumor mill, the movie one day appeared on VOD with little fanfare. Why? Dennis, a special-needs man, lives with John, his older brother, in their upper middle class home. John’s girlfriend Lydia wishes to get married but John seems to feel guilty to leave his younger brother. Soon Dennis begins to question his own reality when a demon starts haunting him in his dreams. Is it there to possess him or nothing more than his imagination? Frederick Koehler plays Dennis in what some have said is a remarkable performance of a troubled young man. The cast includes Sean Patrick Flanery and Dina Meyer in strong supporting rows. Dark Discussions takes a look at this once very elusive film and considers whether or not it is as good as the original hype lead us all to believe. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM
