New York Ninja (2021) Directed By: John Liu, Kurtis Spieler Starring (The Voices of): Don Wilson, Michael Berryman, Linnea Quigley, some other kung fu fuckers New York Ninja is a movie that was originally shot in 1984, but for whatever reason was lost... Until 2021, that is. Vinegar Syndrome found this movie, and hired an editor to painstakingly go through 8-9 hours of film to cut together a cohesive (kinda) story and hired voice actors to play the parts, since the original film lacked sound. IMDB describes the movie as: "Originally shot in 1984 and not finished until 2021, New York Ninja is about a sound technician for a news station (John Liu) who becomes a vigilante ninja in New York City after his pregnant wife is murdered." It's spooky season again, which means Michael is back to encourage you to watch scary movies. He's also got a new memoir out called It's All Good, so why not scoot your gigantic mahogany chair up to your stone fireplace and give it a nice read. Character actor Michael Berryman joins Frank Mackay on this episode of The Frank Mackay Show!
“I'm scanning pornography into the computer to make a lady!” - Eric as George W. Bush On this week's show, we're chatting about the 1985 John Hughes-directed, sci-fi sex comedy, Weird Science! How strange is it that back in the day, these creep-tacular incels were just considered harmless, lovable nerds? Why would they cut out all the solid Bride of Frankenstein conversation from the theatrical cut? Has there been a better titular song in cinema? Is this weird science, or weird computer magic? How cool is all the reversed footage at the end? And are those grandparents dead or what? PLUS: Christopher Nolan - huge Weird Science fan? Weird Science stars Anthony Michael Hall, Kelly LeBrock, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Suzanne Snyder, Judie Aronson, Robert Downey Jr., Robert Rusler, Vernon Wells, Britt Leach, Michael Berryman, and the late, great Bill Paxton as Chet; directed by John Hughes.

For the epically-long episode 224 we look at two dark comedies with cannibalism at their core. We start off with the 1980 classic "Motel Hell" from show-favorite director Kevin Connor. It focuses on "Farmer Vincent" played by Rory Calhoun and his sister Ida, played by Porky's-own Nancy Parsons. They run the "Motel Hello" and are known all across the local area as the purveyors of "Farmer Vincent's Smoked Meats" which we find out are made from waylaid motorists who are trapped, buried in the ground to be fattened up and then butchered and smoked. It isn't a total success but it's an interesting curio from bygone days with a few standout moments that should be seen at least once. We follow this with the seemingly zero-budget "Auntie Lee's Meat Pies" from 1997. This is really a thing that has to be seen to be believed. Starring Karen Black as Auntie Lee, Michael Berryman as her bumbling son and Pat Morita as the local sherrif, the cast is definitely stacked for a movie at this level. The story is essentially that Auntie Lee, who worships Satan, takes bad men and turns them into delicious meat pies. Auntie Lee has a gorgeous squad of young women who go out into the world and tempt these bad men into situations where they can be captured and killed and brought back for processing. Directed by Joseph F. Robertson, who mostly has done adult films, this is a weird combination of trippy moments, soft-core sexiness and over-acting! Trust us, it's a completely unique experience. This week we are discussing the Wes Craven classic, "The Hills Have Eyes Part 2." This movie has sequel had some familiar faces in like Michael Berryman, Penny Johnson (The Larry Sanders Show), Kevin Spirtas (Friday the 13th Part VII), and more. This one had us talking about naming your kids after planets, splitting up in this scary place, the super gas, realizing it's daylight savings from a newspaper, Jamie not realizing the main character was blind, and lots more. These horror movies teach us to never take shortcuts, even though it's fun to chant "SHORTCUT!" Watch the unedited review at sequelsonly.com/HillsHaveEyes2 The next sequel we are talking about is not the one we mentioned in the review because our action sequel expert is available, so we are going to cover "Bloodfist V" starring Don "The Dragon" Wilson, Steve James, and next week's guest Denice Duff. Denice was such a blast to chat with about her career because she loved every project she worked on and shared great memories from them. Return to Frogtown, Subspecies II, Bloodfist V, and more. Denice talked about what's the difference between working with Roger Corman and Charles Band. Awesome Chat! Check out her new film Subspecies V: Bloodrise. John Hammond has picked some classics in the past, and this week is no exception. And when we say classics, we mean movies that fit into the category of 'so bad they're good'. Originally shot in 1984, New York Ninja was never released after the distribution company went bust. But Vinegar Syndrome picked up the film, which had no audio or script to it, restored it digitally and added some serious B-Movie voice talent! Originally directed, written and starring John Liu, this one was "Re-Directed" by Kurtis M. Spieler and has the voices of Don "The Dragon" Wilson, Michael Berryman, Cynthia Rothrock, Linnea Quigley, Vince Murdocco, Matt Mitler, Leon Isaac Kennedy, and Ginger Lynn Allen. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: In the heart of New York City, a shadowy crime syndicate has been wreaking havoc, leaving the citizens paralyzed with fear. Amidst the chaos, an enigmatic figure emerges to protect the innocent and restore justice to the city. He is the New York Ninja. The story follows John, a mild-mannered janitor at a local community center, who witnesses a brutal attack on a group of innocent bystanders by the ruthless crime syndicate. Feeling compelled to act, John unveils his hidden martial arts skills and takes down the assailants, unknowingly becoming the city's vigilante hero, the New York Ninja. As John continues his nightly missions, he begins to uncover the dark and intricate web of crime that has plagued New York City. Along the way, he forms an unlikely alliance with Lily, a tough-as-nails investigative journalist, and Sam, a street-smart kid with a heart of gold. Together, they become an unstoppable force against the criminal underworld. As the New York Ninja gains notoriety, he attracts the attention of the syndicate's sinister leader, the enigmatic Mr. Black. Mr. Black is determined to eliminate the masked vigilante, viewing him as a threat to his empire. A deadly game of cat and mouse ensues as the New York Ninja faces increasingly dangerous challenges, pushing him to his physical and emotional limits. Throughout the thrilling action sequences, heartfelt moments, and unexpected twists, the New York Ninja grapples with his dual identity, torn between his desire to protect the city and the fear of his loved ones getting hurt. As the stakes escalate, the city's fate hangs in the balance. In a climactic showdown atop a towering skyscraper, the New York Ninja faces off against Mr. Black and his elite henchmen. In this ultimate battle between good and evil, the city's destiny will be decided. New York Ninja is an adrenaline-pumping action-packed adventure that showcases the power of determination, the resilience of the human spirit, and the strength of unity. It explores the complexities of heroism and the sacrifices one must make to protect the ones they love. As the sun rises over the city, a new legend is born, and New York will never be the same again. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

Pronounced “Voyager 3,” Detroit's Voyag3r feature keyboardist Steve Greene, guitarist Aaron Greene, and drummer Greg Mastin. Inspired by the soundtracks to vintage horror, action, and sci-fi films, the trio creates experimental rock that owes a debt to pioneers like John Carpenter and shares a kinship with bands such as Trans Am, Teeth of the Sea, and Zombi. Originally directed by and starring martial arts actor John Liu (The Secret Rivals, Invincible Armor) in his only American production, New York Ninja was filmed entirely on 35mm in 1984, but the project was abandoned during production resulting in all original sound materials being lost over time. 35 years later, Vinegar Syndrome acquired the original unedited camera negative and painstakingly constructed and completed the film, with the voice talents of genre favorites: Don “The Dragon” Wilson, Linnea Quigley, Michael Berryman, Ginger Lynn Allen, and Cynthia Rothrock, and a score by Voyag3r. I spoke by phone with all three members of Voyag3r about New York Ninja, the band's history, and more.

Michael Berryman is one of the most unique individuals in Hollywood. Born with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, a rare condition characterized by the absence of sweat glands, hair, and fingernails, he turned his unique look into a career in films like “One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest”, “The Hills Have Eyes” and “The Devil's Rejects”…but apart from that, he's worked as a security guard for Bob Dylan, worked for years with the Wolf Mountain Sanctuary, as well as being an avid scuba diver, conservationist, and one of the most positive people you would ever want to meet.

This episode goes deep into a comment that Chris Carter made some time ago about how an episode about stigmata "deals with faith, not religion with a capital 'R' or Catholicism with a capital 'C'". Mostly about how absurd that is. Especially as this episode became a minor storyline milestone in the exploration of Scully's faith as a Roman Catholic. Still, if you're interested in R. Lee Ermey, like David is. Or stigmata and lightly researched details on the Catholic church, like me, this is a fun episode. Oh, we discuss boiling cow urine for a ridiculous amount of time. Apparently, they did that in The 13th Warrior? A movie Daive swears by. I realized upon relistening I didn't give the author of the stigmata paper I referenced. Looking back, I still can't find the name, but here's the resource if you want to check it out: Blood, Gender and Power in Christiantity and Judaism. Turns out, it's not a thesis paper either. Just a project, based on the URL. I wonder what kind of grade they received. Also, in the episode I didn't reference Judaism, so I went back and Ctrl + F "Judaism" on the project. 0/0 results. Interesting title. So, I researched "non-Christian stigmatics" and the Stigmata wikipedia page. Nothing on Judaism. Now I'm really curious about that title. I wish there was contact information connected to the project... The rest of the episode explores sainthood, references: How to Become a Saint, and how Michael Berryman is a phenomenal actor who shouldn't have been typecast. So, join us. And let me know what if you wrote that project. I'm super curious.

Tom and Jenny talk about one of Wes Craven’s less lauded films, a 1981 folk-horror, supernatural slasher about a village of quasi-Amish farmers who believe an incubus is in their midst. It stars Ernest Borgnine, Maren Jensen, Michael Berryman, and a young Sharon Stone.
