I've been hunkering down this last week here in London, England and that's spurred me to want to dive a little deeper into the U.K., it's relationships with Canada and the U.S., and trade. How those relationships have changed – in a Carney and Trump context – and what new dynamics are driving it all.I've got just the chap to do that with. Now 4-time Herle Burly guest, Andrew MacDougall!Andrew is the former Director of Communications for Prime Minister Harper. Now, he lives in London, where he's a Partner at Trafalgar Strategy, and writes about politics and current affairs, and appears frequently on TV, in all the best journalistic places. That includes his most recent piece in The Ottawa Citizen, a poignant tribute to his late father, one-time Ottawa city councillor and dedicated family doctor, Greg MacDougall, who passed just a couple of weeks ago on Easter Sunday. Give that lovely piece a read, if you haven't yet.Time permitting here after all the U.K. talk, I also want to get Andrew's take on Carney and Poilievre and the performance of the Conservatives vs. Liberals, in the election just passed.Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. It's said that half the countries in the world that have elections will have them this year. But it seems that in many of those countries the incumbent party is in trouble and set to lose. Why? Our guest, Andrew MacDougall, knows politics as a former Director of Communications for Stephen Harper while Harper was prime minister, and is now a consultant for the Trafalgar Strategy Group in London, England.
Andrew MacDougall held the highest-profile communications job in Canada, as Prime Minister Stephen Harper's director of comms. His boss is generally remembered as tight-lipped around media and hostile toward scientific researchers. 5:13 | Now a director at Trafalgar Strategy in the UK, MacDougall tells us about the evolution of his position on the politics of climate action, how the Harper era compares to the Trudeau (and Poilievre) era, the UK's renewables boon, and the future of Canada's energy industry. Today an encore presentation of an episode that originally aired on September 19h. The long goodbye for Queen Elizabeth is over with her body now on its way to its final resting place at Windsor Castle. The end of an historic ten-day period since her passing. Today the Bridge deals with that with Andrew MacDougall joining us from London. But today's program also deals with issues surrounding journalism and its coverage of politicians. Andrew, a former Director of Communications for Prime Minister Stephen Harper helps us on that too.
The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail and Mastercard Foundation.Alright, Herle Burly-ites, in Air Quotes Media's effort to always be on top of all the issues you care about – here we are recording this podcast a mere 6 or so hours after the resignation of British Prime Minister Liz Truss, which is only 43 days and 18 hours less time than Ms. Truss' entire Prime Minister-ship. I don't know whether that's impressive or just sad.I'm gonna go with impressive, mainly because of the strength of the guest we have on here to talk about it all. We are lucky – lucky I say – to welcome our excellent friend of the pod, Andrew MacDougall. Andrew is the former Director of Communications for Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Now he lives in London, where he's a Director at Trafalgar Strategy, and writes about politics and current affairs in all the best journalistic places. But for the purposes of our conversation, we're going to spend a little time going back from here. What are the circumstances that led to a head of lettuce outlasting Liz Truss? Why have we had 5 Tory PMs in 6 years? What are the democratic implications of that? And how has the long tail of Brexit shaped all of this?Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. Covid Monday is back at least for this week on The Bridge. Many of you have been asking to bring one of our doctors back for an assessment of where we are on covid. Dr Lisa Barrett from Dalhouse University joins us with her take and its one you should listen to. Then it's over to London for a chat with the former Director of Communications for Stephen Harper, Andrew MacDougall, and his analysis on what's happened to Liz Truss and whether she can even survive this week only a month after getting the British PM's job.

There have been three sightings of the Asian giant hornet in the Pacific Northwest - a place they should not be. Lab findings determined that two of the hornets were from different colonies. This means there were at least two simultaneous arrivals of the Asian giant hornet. Yikes. They are an invasive species that bully the native species to the point where they can't survive. And that's a problem for conservation efforts. It's pollinator week - and Andrew MacDougall joins the pod.
First part of the show today, we have Andrew MacDougall, former Director of Communications for Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
