Most of the main branches of the Restoration were formed within roughly two decades of the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith. One clear exception, however, is the Mormon Fundamentalist movement. Here's a little backstory: In 1890 President Wilford Woodruff issued a manifesto announcing the Church's intention to submit to those laws recently passed and declared constitutional by the US Supreme Court forbidding plural marriage. Then in 1904, as a result of the Reed Smoot hearings before the US Senate and the national attention this brought to the continued practice of plural marriage in Utah, President Joseph F. Smith issued what is known as the “Second Manifesto,” which announced the Church's policy to excommunicate anyone who continued to enter into new polygamous marriages. Yet some Church members felt that the manifestos of Presidents Woodruff and Smith were not inspired. Instead, they saw them as weak and uninspired capitulations to government demands rather than a continued courageous commitment to God's commands in the face of persecution. Within a few decades, those who dissented against these manifestos or were excommunicated from the LDS Church for entering into additional plural marriages began to gather on the Utah/Arizona border at a place known as Short Creek. They believed in a 1912 statement by Lorin C. Woolley, who had been courier for President John Taylor, about an unpublished 1886 revelation of President Taylor wherein the Lord declared that the “New and Everlasting Covenant” had not been revoked, nor would it ever be. This was interpreted by those in this group to mean that plural marriage would never be withdrawn. They concluded therefore that President Taylor's unpublished revelation (and their interpretation of it) overruled and superceded the first manifesto of President Woodruff in 1890 and the second manifesto of President Smith in 1904. They were staying true to this core fundamental element of Mormonism while the LDS Church was not. In time these Mormon Fundamentalists fragmented into various groups, including the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (or FLDS Church), the Apostolic United Brethren (or AUB), the Righteous Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the True and Living Church of Jesus Christ of Saints of the Last Days, among others. In this episode of Church History Matters, Casey and I sit down with Dr. Brian Hales, an expert researcher and author of several books on the Mormon fundamentalist movement, to discuss this fascinating branch of the Restoration. Liz comes from a unique background being almost royalty within the polygamist community. Her grandfather was Rulon Allred and he was the prophet of the Apostolic United Brethren (or the AUB) until he was murdered in 1977 by a rivalry group. Later in 2014 until just this year, her father was the prophet of the AUB. Growing up polygamist she loved it but had experiences to where she was shunned by the neighbors when they would find out that she was part of a polygamist church. The AUB was a break off from the original teachings of the Mormon church and believed that they were keeping the celestial, higher law alive by living polygamy. If you have watched sister wives, with Christine Brown, they are a part of the AUB and Christine is a relative of Liz's.At 16 years old, Liz chose to join the mainstream LDS church. She had to wait until she was 18 years old in order to fully join because she came from polygamy. The AUB teachings were so similar to the mainstream Mormon church that often she would have a hard time remembering which was from what religion. She shares that she was quite happy with both religion and she was following her internal compass. She practiced mainstream Mormonism for years until her sister shared a memory that she had at young age of very inappropriate sexual acts with the leaders of the AUB. With this revelation Liz was forced to sit with the linage of what her sister had experienced and all the men that took advantage of their power. The string that pulled the sweater for her was when her dad became the prophet of the AUB. She saw that there was a line from hr dad to her grandfather, to Brigham Young to Joseph Smith and see there was an abuse of their power. This is a truly powerful episode and one that you will want to listen to.Links:Join my upcoming Life Elevated Mentorship group starting Nov 27th. https://www.amandajoyloveland.com/elevatedmastermindLet's stay in touch!IG: @amanda.joy.lovelandFB Amanda Joy Lovelandwww.amandajoyloveland.comYouTube: Amanda Joy Loveland

In a continuation of the rabbit holes Jake went down, this episode covers the Apostolic United Brethren church. Jake and Dusti discover that this offshoot of the Mormon church thinks that Mormons are the heathens. They also read a blog written by someone who visited the church and, of course, they cover the TLC series Sister Wives.
We talk about Comicon for Mormans, the feeding frenzy when a man dies who has many wives, and what it is like growing up in a community that you have been x-communicated from. Host Chelsea Kunz speaks to former Polygamist, Sarah Eliason. She speaks about what it was like growing up in the Apostolic United Brethren church, a relatively more modern polygamist group. She speaks about her parents' choice to join the AUB, keeping such a huge secret while trying to fit in mainstream society, and the patriarchal power dynamic in their home. We learn about secrecy leading to isolation and depression and the courage to leave and find a better way of life. In light of a recent Twitter op-ed, we invite Dr. Cristina Rosetti onto the show to discuss a polygamist group in Utah (the Kingston Group) who’ve recently contributed to political campaigns, shot rifles with POTUS’s son, and opposed the decriminalization of polygamy which recently passed the Utah legislature. Rosetti helps us navigate the tumultuous waters of Mormon polygamy and discusses the recently-passed bill. Then we jump into our next installment of The Naked Communist before wrapping with some happy news about the recent Presidential Election. We had the pleasure to speak to Arturo Jessop, who’s story is vastly different then the other stories we’ve shared. In previous episodes we discuss how racism plays a big part in most of the polygamist groups. Well in the AUB they allow two other races, Mexicans and Native Americans. Arturo’s family comes from Mexico. As he tells his story you’ll see how the AUB converts from the communities in Mexico.
Leah left the AUB polygamist group in 2010 as a young adult! Leah has been featured in the TV show Escaping Polygamy. She shares her story with us and what it was like to be a young women in the AUB group. We get into the politics of the AUB and how the church is run so closely to the LDS church. Kevin was born and raised in the AUB polygamist group. He was married as well in the group and we touch a bit on what the marriage ceremony is like in a polygamist group. He was never a practicing polygamist, yet his insight into polygamy and the AUB are exceptional! He came in with his wife Liz who we interviewed the previous episode. He shares wisdom and knowledge we are excited to be able to share!
The Apostolic United Brethren is known as the AUB or the Allred Group, based out of Bluffdale, Utah. Our first ever former AUB member Liz Jessop came in for a deep and informational interview! Liz was the first wife in a plural marriage and shares her struggle to make the decision to leave polygamy. She tells us all new information on the AUB; from how childhood is in the AUB to the religious ceremonies they perform. We hope this is as informal to you as it was to us. We learned somethings that we’ve never heard. Liz came in and in her words “got a bunch of monkeys off her back”.
In this episode, Steve Shields and I discuss some of the larger and smaller Mormon groups: fundamentalists and Cutlerites. Many of these fundamentalists practice polygamy. https://youtu.be/N4q_namvQ5g Steve: The FLDS has 8,000 to 10,000. The Apostolic United Brethren and has 8,000 to 10,000, somewhere in that range. Those are the two largest organized groups, organized structural institutions. I've heard numbers of 50 or 60,000 fundamentalist Mormons all told. There's either some smaller, like the Centennial Park--I don't want to call them a group because the Centennial Park priesthood affiliation, maybe as a way to talk about those. You've got Naylor and Nielsen. You've got the guy up in British Columbia, Winston Blackmore. He's actually incorporated as the Church of Jesus Christ (Original Doctrine). That's their corporate filing in Canada. He's got 500 or so. Nielson and Naylor and Blackmore have been kind of doing some, they've not merged per se, but some cross affiliation because Nielsen and Naylor's problem with the Jeffs family was very similar with Winston's. So frankly, in all of the fundamentalist Mormons, there's very little doctrinal difference, if any at all. It has to do with priesthood authority. Who has the legitimate line? GT: I talked with Anne Wilde and one things that she said was really the largest group are what she would call independent or unaffiliated. Steve: That's right. Most of them are unaffiliated but they do fellowship with each other. You've got a large following: Fred Collier, Tom Green and others who believe in what they called the patriarchal order. Every father is a patriarch over his own family and has full authority to ordain his children, the male children. We'll also discuss the only other Mormon group that has an endowment ceremony in the temple. They are sometimes referred to as the Cutlerites, named after Alpheus Cutler. Steve: Alpheus Cutler's church has always been small, and they do not proselytize. They don't believe in that. Alpheus Cutler is said to have been given a revelation that in the last days there will only be two and from that small branch, God will redeem Zion. So, they don't worry too much about that. They're getting older. GT: They're the ones who still have a temple ceremony. Is that right? Steve: Yes, they do. The upper room work is conducted in their building in Independence. I'll say on a regular basis. That doesn't mean every day or every week necessarily. I don't know any more about it than that. Nobody does except them and I respect that. I'm very curious, of course. How big are they? Check out our conversation…. Steve Shields discusses Mormon polygamists and Cutlerites, the only other Mormon group with a temple endowment ceremony. [paypal-donation] We're continuing our discussion with polygamy expert Anne Wilde. We'll talk about the infamous Ervil LeBaron: a polygamist and an assassin. He was responsible of the deaths not only of his own brother, but other leaders such as the Apostolic United Brethren's Rulon Allred. Anne: He is responsible for killing or the death of about 20 people, and I know that because I knew some of them. Ogden[1] was introduced to him one time under a fictitious name and so we went out to a meeting and thought this was this guy's name, Stilson, and lo and behold shortly after that we saw a picture, “Wanted: Ervil LeBaron” but was a picture of this guy that we had met. He even stayed in my home under that other name. Then when I found out who he was, I was a little concerned, but fortunately I didn't know who he was at the time he stayed in my home. [1] Anne was the second wife of polygamist Ogden Kraut. Before we get to that, She's a polygamy expert, and we're going to talk more about some of the smaller polygamist groups, such as the Kingston group and Harmston group. GT: Would it be safe to say that the AUB is probably the biggest group now? Anne: It is. GT: It's probably about 7500. Anne: It's the biggest one that's in unity or in one name or whatever.... Don't forget the independents! That's what I am. I consider myself an independent fundamentalist Mormon and that's because I do not belong to any other organized groups. There's about 12-15000, but they aren't a group. GT: Oh so they're the biggest. Anne: But they aren't a group. There are a lot that believe in keeping these eternal principles alive, not just plural marriage but others as well, as best as they can amongst the families. They just don't feel impressed, and I don't, to join and be baptized into any of the groups. You might want to brush up on the AUB, FLDS & Centennial Park too. Check out our conversation….. https://youtu.be/A6kgDsPRx_Y [paypal-donation]
[paypal-donation] So far we've talked about the 1890 Manifesto, as well as the 1904 Manifesto. A third manifesto was issued in 1933, and that actually led to the formation of several polygamist groups, such as the Apostolic United Brethren. Anne: When Joseph Musser was the senior member, because the other three before him had passed away, then that's when the “split” happened. It's too complicated to go into; suffice it to say that there were two members that they wanted to add to that quorum, and Joseph Musser was not in favor of that and he called Rulon Allred, Owen Allred and some others to another council, so there are now two councils. GT: Two parallel councils. Anne: Yes, and each one claims that they're the only ones that have the authority, or the true priesthood or whatever you want to call it. So that's when the division began. Joseph Musser died in 1954, so this happened before that.[1] They went to prison, and when he came out he was not feeling well and anyway, it's a whole lot of story. In this next episode, we'll talk about the Third Manifesto, as well as one specific group: the Apostolic United Brethren. You may be familiar with them if you've watched the tv show, Sister Wives, with Kody Brown and his four wives. Kody's daughter Madison tried to join the LDS Church. GT: Ok, I know his daughter, I want to say Madison, I can't remember, was going to Utah State I believe and she actually wanted to join the LDS Church. Anne: And they wouldn't let her.[2] GT: And they wouldn't let her, and she said, “I don't want to be a polygamist. I don't want to do anything.” But they still wouldn't let her. Essentially the church policy is that they want to—you have to basically disown your parents, or I don't know if that's the right terminology. Anne: I think that varies. Without mentioning a name, there is a family whose son—I don't want to say anything that's going to get anybody in trouble. Let's just say that he joined the church, the LDS Church, had friends that were LDS, went on a mission for the Church. He didn't have to deny his parents, but he had to deny his intent to live it. He now is back from his mission, performed an honorable mission. He was not prevented from joining the church, even though they knew what family he came from. So that's what I say, it's going to vary. Should Madison have been prevented from joining the LDS Church? Check out our conversation with Anne Wilde….. https://youtu.be/C5E2Ekkppv0 [1] John Y. Barlow was head of the quorum until his death in December 1949. Rulon Clark Allred (March 29, 1906 – May 10, 1977) was a homeopath and chiropractor in Salt Lake City and the founder/leader of what is now the Apostolic United Brethren, a breakaway sect of polygamous Mormon fundamentalists in Utah, Colorado, Montana, and Arizona, United States. He was murdered on the orders of Ervil LeBaron, the head of a rival polygamous sect (Wikipedia). Vance Allred is Rulon's Allred's son, and at one point was a chief apologist for Mormon fundamentalist polygamy, and was being groomed to succeed his father as prophet of the AUB. In this three part series, Vance Allred discusses: Part 1: His father's rise to power, via the founding of the Apostolic United Brethren, and Vance's early years as the son of a polygamist prophet. Part 2: The events leading up to Rulon Allred's assassination, and Vance's candid critique of his father's work, and Part 3: The sexual abuse in the AUB that led Vance to leave the AUB, and the events that led Vance to join the LDS church (requiring an interview with two LDS apostles). Finally, Vance discusses the factors that led to him becoming inactive LDS.

Her scientific publications include two major ethnographic works and two comparative analyses of Mormon polygynous women, as well as many peer-review journal articles. Women of Principle: Female Networking in Contemporary Mormon Polygyny (Oxford University Press 1998) offers an in-depth study of gender roles and sexual norms in the Apostolic United Brethren sect in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana, cataloging women's conversion stories. This ethnography shows that while abuses do exist, some women achieve ironic ascendance and satisfaction in fundamentalism. Desert Patriarchy (University of Arizona Press 2004) presents her theory explaining the role of the desert environment (Chihuahua, Mexico) in the development and maintenance of a patriarchal gender ideology. Her model identifies several factors -- male supremacy, female network, non-secular education, imbalanced sex ratios, alternative sexuality, and circumscription -- which work to facilitate the longevity of desert patriarchal communities.
