Lance Allred is the first Deaf player in NBA History - playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers alongside Lebron James in 2008. Even without the hearing loss - Lance's journey to the NBA was NOT a typical one. He was born and raised in a Polygamist Commune in Montana and escaped at age 13 with his family to start a new life. Standing at 6'11 and needing a new way to socialize in "the normal world" Lance turned to basketball at his new school - and the rest is history.Lance is now a wildly successful business owner, professional speaker, author, and communicator (which he is most proud of). He has multiple books including "The New Alpha Male" with the Foreword by Ric Bucher. He can also be found by his famous TED X Talk "What is your Polygamy?" on Youtube. In this episode, Lance gives us a wealth of wisdom and philosophy to help us all slow down and communicate even better than before. Some of the main takeaways are below:-"Karma doesn't usually pay you back in the same currency"- Use "I CHOOSE to" instead of "I HAVE to" to regain control-"Most people will choose a familiar Hell over an unfamiliar Heaven"-Ask for permission before giving advice "May I offer some advice?"-Aim for efficiency, not ego.Instagram: @LanceAllred41Website/Speaking: Lanceallred41.comYoutube: "What is your Polygamy?"

In this episode, Dr. Natalie Phillips spends time talking with Lance Allred, the first deaf player in NBA history, international and online keynote speaker, TedX speaker, leadership consultant, visionary, motivator, and best-selling author. Lance was born legally deaf, with 80% hearing loss, into a fringe polygamist commune in rural Montana, where he and his family lived until managing to escape when Lance was 13. With his characteristic courage and grit, he eventually overcame tremendous odds and obstacles to join the Cleveland Cavaliers, making the NBA at the age of 27. "Perseverance is the ability to adapt." ~ Lance Allred Lance founded Courage & Grit, a non-profit organization using sports, the arts, and motivational speaking to inspire overlooked and underserved youth, including: deaf/hearing impaired, First Nations, refugee, immigrant, inner-city, rural, low income and/or special needs, by giving them opportunities to attend sessions and camps facilitated and organized by world class athletes and artists at no charge. The goal is for these students to take what they've learned and in turn, help coach special or other-needs kids, engaging in environmental stewardship as a form of giving back and learning the power of service and gratitude, which are foundations for their future success as leaders in their own communities. "Abundance is limitless. It is service to others. We must all continue to walk in a heart-centered way". ~ Lance Allred For more information about Lance Allred and Courage & Grit, please visit: https://www.courageandgrit.org/ (https://www.courageandgrit.org) http://lanceallred41.com/ (http://lanceallred41.com) https://www.facebook.com/lanceallred41 (https://www.facebook.com/lanceallred41) https://twitter.com/lanceallred41 (https://twitter.com/lanceallred41) https://www.instagram.com/lanceallred41/ (https://www.instagram.com/lanceallred41/) https://www.youtube.com/user/tetonia5099 (https://www.youtube.com/user/tetonia5099) https://www.linkedin.com/in/lanceallred41 (https://www.linkedin.com/in/lanceallred41) Watch the video version of this show on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aby4eT6acA4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aby4eT6acA4) Support us on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/nocofm (https://www.patreon.com/nocofm) Hosted by Dr. Natalie Phillips. What a surreal experience. It was like someone was speaking what was in my heart and mind right back to me. We have such a similar point of view, similar outlooks such as the path of the heart, divine pride, toxic positivity, holding gratitude and heartbreak at the same time. I wanted to jump through the Zoom room and fist pump, hug, do the I GET YOU dance. Lance has found his comfort zone in the unknown through his intimate relationship with himself. In his latest book The New Alpha Male, he believes the new masculine is one of being brave and vulnerable. And that heartbreak is our greatest teacher, that we can hold both the light and the dark. Lance Allred was born legally deaf in a polygamist commune in rural Montana. When he was 13, his family escaped and eventually came out of hiding in Utah, where for the first time, he had to step into a world that he had no experience navigating. Lance had always loved writing, but at nearly 6’4” in middle school, and looking for a new way to belong, his height caught the eye of the basketball coach. The game became his life and he'd eventually become a star athlete that led to college, then years playing all over the world in the pros, including a stint in the NBA. But, underneath it all, Lance never left his love of writing, and he began to share his inner life in print, authoring a number of books and eventually leaving the game to speak to and train leaders. In his newest book, The New Alpha Male, (https://amzn.to/2Ub4d6W) Lance turns his deeply reflective, insightful, and honest lens on the role of masculinity, how his experience of it has changed dramatically since becoming a dad and what he leads with now. In today’s conversation, we explore all of this, including a really beautiful moment where the truer, deeper reason for this book, and who it’s really written for, comes out. On this episode of the podcast I share my recent conversation with Lance Allred. For those of you who are not familiar with Lance's story he is an accomplished author and speaker, and he also happens to be the first deaf player in the history of the National Basketball Association. Leading up to the NBA, Lance played for many pro teams around the globe, and then he earned a spot playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers alongside of LeBron James. While all of that is remarkable, it's his inner work leading up to his NBA experience, as well as his metamorphosis and contributions since leaving the sport that are truly impactful. This is an amazing conversation about perseverance, leadership, empathy, and gratitude. Ultimately, Lance shows us that becoming what he calls ‘the new alpha' is critical to success in our rapidly evolving world. www.thebravestlife.com/049 www.lanceallred41.com

Lance Allred is a former NBA player (who was the first legally deaf player in the league), public speaker, and author. With Sounds True, he has published The New Alpha Male: How to Win the Game When the Rules Are Changing. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon speaks with Lance about the experiences he had in professional sports that led him to reevaluate what it means to be a man in contemporary society. Lance explains how his upbringing in a rural, polygamous commune informed his original ideas about masculinity, highlighting the subconscious assumptions about money and power that affect American men’s self-worth. Tami and Lance also discuss the roles of emotional vulnerability and surrender in the lives of modern men. Finally, they talk about the principle of perseverance and the increasingly urgent need for all cultures to reexamine their assumptions and core values.(63 minutes)
Becoming Your Best | The Principles of Highly Successful Leaders
People have forgotten how to ask questions and one of the reasons is the online culture that has been spoiling us to have things set and catered to our exact preference. Everything needs to look the way we want it to look, and therefore, if people don’t fit in that perfect cookie-cutter model that we have designed – our comfort zone – then they’re a threat. That is not true! Even if there is a universal truth out there, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t different ways of perceiving it. In today’s episode, my guest is the first legally deaf NBA player – Lance Allred. Since he retired from basketball, he became a speaker, trying to inspire people and encouraging them to achieve their goals, by following the principles of perseverance. Lance Allred is an expert on Leadership, Perseverance, and Grit. Legally deaf, at 80% hearing loss from RH complications at birth, he was born and raised in a polygamist commune until the age of 13. He is the author of four books - with the fifth, “The New Alpha Male” coming on soon – and the TEDx Star of “What is Your Polygamy?” So, listen to Episode 218 of Becoming Your Best, to learn about Lance’s background and how he ended up teaching people how to communicate – the one thing that everyone takes for granted, even though he spent 15 years in speech therapy. We also discuss the principles of perseverance and how you can apply them in your life. Questions I ask: Lance, please share a little bit of your background and how you got to where you are today, so that we can get a little more personal feel for who you are. (02:36) Let’s talk about your new book, “The New Alpha Male” and tell us what that’s about and what the intended objective of that is. (13:40) Do you have a website or a place that they can go to get that book, Lance? (30:00) In this episode, you will learn: What is cult mentality and religion, according to Lance. (03:52) The backbone of Lance’s message as a speaker. (06:36) A suggestive analogy between culture and the different types of computer software. (09:31) The question you should ask yourself, to figure out if you have integrity. (16:10) One of the mistakes most entrepreneurs do, regarding their employees. (17:20) How to let go of the victim archetype and embrace the teacher archetype. (22:01) Compassion is one of the hardest strengths. Lance Allred was the first legally deaf player in the NBA. At almost seven feet tall, you might think he was blessed with a lot of natural talent, but his road to the NBA was not an easy one. Lance gives a lot of credit to Mrs. Aston, a 6th grade teacher who helped him look beyond his hearing impediment and use his natural grit and determination to succeed when others might easily quit. He also has a message for teachers who may occasionally wonder if they are really making a difference the lives of the kids they teach. - - - - Music Attribution: "60's Quiz Show" by Podington Bear is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Artist: www.podingtonbear.com/ Meditation Impromptu 03 by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100161 Artist: http://incompetech.com/

How does a deaf child make it in the NBA and go on to be a KeyNote motivational speaker with a TEDx under his belt? For this episode, I had the privilege of interviewing Lance Allred, the first deaf NBA player, KeyNote motivational speaker, and bestselling author. Hearing Lance’s story will make you question the gravity of any obstacle set in front of you. Lance was told at an early age that being deaf was a punishment from God for something he or one of his ancestors did in a past life. People always reminded him of his limitations, but he powered through. He didn’t let his disability block him from doing things that people with perfect hearing can do. For instance, we conducted our podcast interview as a video call and then converted it to the MP3 file because Lance can read lips. This is one of the most inspirational interviews you’ll ever hear. “People inflict pain, because they are already in pain…Pain is just a projection” —Lance Allred Learn —The benefits of failure —How to crush any obstacle in your way —How to get rid of the bad baggage in your life —How to pursue your dreams even if it feels risky Key Links from the Show: Lance’s Website — learn more about Lance and read his content Lance's Instagram — follow him for motivational posts Lance’s TEDx Talk—you are doing yourself a disservice if you don’t watch this TEDx Talk.

Lance Allred's Mormon story is fascinating for so many reasons. He is the grandson of assassinated Mormon fundamentalist prophet Rulon Allred. He was born deaf, and stands 6'11" tall. He was a star basketball player for East High school (SLC, Utah), and played college basketball both at the University of Utah and Weber State University. Lance developed scrupulosity (religious OCD), at least partially as a result of both perfectionism, and guilt/shame relating to matters of sexuality. NCAA legend Rick Marjerus was fired as University of Utah basketball coach because of his verbal abuse of Lance. After college, Lance went on to play 10 years of professional basketball (mostly overseas), including playing a year for the Cleveland Cavaliers with Lebron James (pre-Miami), amongst other teams (he even met Larry Bird!). Lance become a popular public speaker, perhaps most recently known for his "What is Your Polygamy" TEDx talk. Lance has fascinating insights on faith, doubt, and disbelief. Lance Allred played professional basketball for a decade all around the world, including a stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2008. Born legally deaf into a fundamentalist polygamous family, his life experience has been anything but typical. Now, with his playing days behind him, Allred is turning to social entrepreneurship. Allred is creating a tech company called Manestream that he says will provide radically faster access to internet resources, allowing users to work directly from the web at speeds approaching the time to access a hard drive. The system will be commercially available any day now. The bandwidth, the website says, comes via a license to what was the MCI fiber optic network. That will be combined with “patented process of enterprise-grade global cloud servers and secure data storage providers.” The plan is also to make the system compliant with HIPAA and other privacy standards, allowing medical providers and other users with security use the network. While the system will work with your laptop, the company also plans to sell slimmed-down devices that access the cloud service and don’t require a hard drive.
