Orson Scott Card (born August 24, 1951) is an American writer known best for his science fiction works. As of 2024, he is the only person to have won a Hugo Award and a Nebula Award in consecutive years, winning both awards for his novel Ender's Game (1985) and its sequel Speaker for the Dead (1986). A feature film adaptation of Ender's Game, which Card coproduced, was released in 2013. Card also wrote the Locus Fantasy Award-winning series The Tales of Alvin Maker (1987–2003). Card's fiction often features characters with exceptional gifts who make difficult choices with high stakes. Card has also written political, religious, and social commentary in his columns and other writing; his opposition to homosexuality has provoked public criticism. Card, who is a great-great-grandson of Brigham Young, was born in Richland, Washington, and grew up in Utah and California. While he was a student at Brigham Young University (BYU), his plays were performed on stage. He served in Brazil as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and headed a community theater for two summers. Card had 27 short stories published between 1978 and 1979, and he won the John W. Campbell Award for best new writer in 1978. He earned a master's degree in English from the University of Utah in 1981 and wrote novels in science fiction, fantasy, nonfiction, and historical fiction genres starting in 1979. Card continued to write prolifically, and he has published over 50 novels and 45 short stories.[1] Card teaches English at Southern Virginia University; he has written two books on creative writing and serves as a judge in the Writers of the Future contest. He has taught many successful writers at his "literary boot camps". He remains a practicing member of the LDS Church. His ancestors include Brigham Young, Charles Ora Card, Zina P. Young Card, Zina Young Card Brown, and Hugh B. Brown.[4] When Card was one month old, his family moved to San Mateo, California, so Willard Card could begin a sign-painting business. When he was three years old, the family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, so his father could finish his bachelor's degree. The family moved to Santa Clara, California, when Card was six; they stayed there for seven years while his father completed his master's degree and worked as a professor at San Jose State College. In school, Card took classes for gifted students, but he was more interested in studying music—he played clarinet and French horn. He read widely, including historical fiction, nonfiction, and literary classics.[5] At age ten, he wrote his first story, which was about an intelligent child who is assaulted by bullies and sustains brain damage. Ender's confrontation with Stilson in Ender's Game is based on this story.[6] In 1964, Card and his family moved to Mesa, Arizona, where he participated in mock debates in junior high school. In 1967, the family moved to Orem, Utah, where his father worked at Brigham Young University (BYU). Card attended BYU's laboratory school, where he took both high school and early college-level classes before graduating in one year. When beginning his college studies he intended to major in archeology, but after becoming increasingly more interested in theater, he began script-writing, writing ten original plays and rewriting other students' plays. Most of his plays were based on Mormon history and scriptures; one was science fiction. In February 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in Carter v. Canada that parts of the Criminal Code would need to change to satisfy the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The parts that prohibited medical assistance in dying would no longer be valid. The Supreme Court gave the government until June 6, 2016, to create a new law. In June 2016, the Parliament of Canada passed federal legislation, known as Bill C-14, that allows eligible Canadian adults to request medical assistance in dying. On March 17, 2021, changes to Canada's MAiD law came into force with Bill C-7. The new law responds to feedback from over 300,000 Canadians, experts, practitioners, stakeholders, indigenous groups and provinces and territories. These changes to the criminal code now allow MAID for eligible persons who wish to pursue a medically assisted death whether their natural death is foreseeable or not. It also introduced a new two-track approach to procedural safeguards based on whether or not a person's natural death is reasonably foreseeable. The new law will reduce unnecessary suffering in Canada. The new law provided the speaker's father the choice of a dignified, compassionate, and empowering death. The speaker will be sharing a daughter's perspective of her family's journey through Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID). She will offer a unique viewpoint as her father, John Warren, was deemed ‘Track 2' and his natural death was not reasonably foreseeable, but all other eligibility criteria were met. She will share the story of her Dad's long history of pain, his important involvement with the organization that helped to pass Bill C-14, the profile of who is utilizing MAID, the process from application onwards, as well as share the challenging and rewarding parts of their journey. He was born gifted but can recall communicating with spirit at the earliest age of four. This was written about a book of the same name written by Armin Wegner. Wegner was a committed humanitarian who documented the abuses of the Armenian Genocide and was interned in Nazi concentration camps before being exiled for speaking out against them. This book we are discussing tells of what Wegner was observing in the Soviet Union in a time that is after the revolution and before the reign of Stalin. Philip Sharp's essay segment talks on the basic history of typical left wing tactics for seizing power in a society. With the basics set forth, he then looks at current applications being played out today.

On July 12, 2018, Kitty Snow delivered the banner lecture, “From Richmond to France: Images and Stories of Richmond and Her World War I Soldiers.” When America entered the Great War in 1917, many of Richmond’s “soldier boys” had never been out of the city, much less the country. Most went to Camp Lee and then boarded ships for France. One of those young men was Leon Stilson. His father, streetcar driver Harry Stilson, photographed his son and other Richmond boys as they went off to war and came home. He photographed them with family and in parades and celebrations. Harry’s great-granddaughter, Kitty Snow, will share images and stories of those young men and Richmond during the war and after the Armistice. Some did not come home, so the Stilson collection also gives you passage on a Gold Star Mother Pilgrimage to France. Kitty Snow is the owner of Home Team Realtors and a part-time historian. She is the author of "From a Richmond Streetcar: Life through the Lens of Harris Stilson," "On the West Clay Line," "Up and Down Church Hill," and "From Richmond to France: Images and Stories of Richmond and Her World War I Soldiers."

[paypal-donation] We're continuing our discussion with polygamy expert Anne Wilde. We'll talk about the infamous Ervil LeBaron: a polygamist and an assassin.  He was responsible of the deaths not only of his own brother, but other leaders such as the Apostolic United Brethren's Rulon Allred. Anne:  He is responsible for killing or the death of about 20 people, and I know that because I knew some of them.  Ogden[1] was introduced to him one time under a fictitious name and so we went out to a meeting and thought this was this guy's name, Stilson, and lo and behold shortly after that we saw a picture, “Wanted: Ervil LeBaron” but was a picture of this guy that we had met.  He even stayed in my home under that other name.  Then when I found out who he was, I was a little concerned, but fortunately I didn't know who he was at the time he stayed in my home. [1] Anne was the second wife of polygamist Ogden Kraut. Before we get to that,  She's a polygamy expert, and we're going to talk more about some of the smaller polygamist groups, such as the Kingston group and Harmston group. GT:  Would it be safe to say that the AUB is probably the biggest group now? Anne:  It is. GT:  It's probably about 7500. Anne:  It's the biggest one that's in unity or in one name or whatever....  Don't forget the independents!  That's what I am.  I consider myself an independent fundamentalist Mormon and that's because I do not belong to any other organized groups.  There's about 12-15000, but they aren't a group. GT:  Oh so they're the biggest. Anne:  But they aren't a group.  There are a lot that believe in keeping these eternal principles alive, not just plural marriage but others as well, as best as they can amongst the families.  They just don't feel impressed, and I don't, to join and be baptized into any of the groups. Han var som mange andre niåringar, og drøymde om å bli fotballproff i utlandet. Så blei Michael Stilson vaksen, og han greidde å gjere hobbyen til jobb. Men etter å ha slite benken i fleire år i norsk førstedivisjon, kjenner Stilson seg avdanka som 29-åring. Kan han med nokre dramatiske grep gjere barndomsdraumen til røyndom, eller må han innsjå at slaget er tapt?

Steve Cooper talks with writer/comic Jeff Stilson. Jeff got his start doing stand-up comedy and has performed on numerous TV shows such as HBO's 14th Annual Young Comedians Special, TV Nation, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Show with David Letterman, HBO Comedy Half-Hour, Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Comedy Central Presents. He then transitioned to writing and won two Emmys, one for The Chris Rock Show and one for the Osbournes. He has also written on such shows as The Late Show with David Letterman, Lopez Tonight, Last Comic Standing, The Daily Show, Da Ali G Show, Politically Incorrect and The Wayne Brady Show. In addition he writes for many award shows and wrote and directed the documentary Good Hair. 

On July 10, 2014, Kitty Snow delivererd a Banner Lecture entitled "From a Richmond Streetcar: Life through the Lens of Harris Stilson." Streetcar motorman Harris Stilson spent countless hours using his camera to capture Richmond and its everyday citizens nearly 100 years ago, giving us a priceless look at the city's many slices of life. This lecture, presented by Kitty Snow, Harry's great-granddaughter, will reveal the city's past as told through Harry's prolific images and her thoughtful narration. The content and opinions expressed in these presentations are solely those of the speaker and not necessarily of the Virginia Museum of History & Culture.
