Most of the main branches of the Restoration were formed within roughly two decades of the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith. One clear exception, however, is the Mormon Fundamentalist movement. Here's a little backstory: In 1890 President Wilford Woodruff issued a manifesto announcing the Church's intention to submit to those laws recently passed and declared constitutional by the US Supreme Court forbidding plural marriage. Then in 1904, as a result of the Reed Smoot hearings before the US Senate and the national attention this brought to the continued practice of plural marriage in Utah, President Joseph F. Smith issued what is known as the “Second Manifesto,” which announced the Church's policy to excommunicate anyone who continued to enter into new polygamous marriages. Yet some Church members felt that the manifestos of Presidents Woodruff and Smith were not inspired. Instead, they saw them as weak and uninspired capitulations to government demands rather than a continued courageous commitment to God's commands in the face of persecution. Within a few decades, those who dissented against these manifestos or were excommunicated from the LDS Church for entering into additional plural marriages began to gather on the Utah/Arizona border at a place known as Short Creek. They believed in a 1912 statement by Lorin C. Woolley, who had been courier for President John Taylor, about an unpublished 1886 revelation of President Taylor wherein the Lord declared that the “New and Everlasting Covenant” had not been revoked, nor would it ever be. This was interpreted by those in this group to mean that plural marriage would never be withdrawn. They concluded therefore that President Taylor's unpublished revelation (and their interpretation of it) overruled and superceded the first manifesto of President Woodruff in 1890 and the second manifesto of President Smith in 1904. They were staying true to this core fundamental element of Mormonism while the LDS Church was not. In time these Mormon Fundamentalists fragmented into various groups, including the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (or FLDS Church), the Apostolic United Brethren (or AUB), the Righteous Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the True and Living Church of Jesus Christ of Saints of the Last Days, among others. In this episode of Church History Matters, Casey and I sit down with Dr. Brian Hales, an expert researcher and author of several books on the Mormon fundamentalist movement, to discuss this fascinating branch of the Restoration. Arizona, Nevada and Mexico will continue to live with less water next year from the Colorado River after the U.S. government announced water cuts that preserve the status quo. Long-term challenges remain for the 40 million people reliant on the imperiled river. The 1,450-mile (2,334-kilometer) river is a lifeline for the U.S. West and supplies water to cities and farms in northern Mexico, too. It supports seven Western states, and more than two dozen Native American tribes and irrigates millions of acres of farmland in the American West. It also produces hydropower used across the region. Years of overuse combined with rising temperatures and drought have meant less water flows in the Colorado River today than in decades past. The Interior Department announces water availability for the coming year months in advance so that cities, farmers and others can plan. Officials do so based on water levels at Lake Mead, one of the river's two main reservoirs that act as barometers of its health. Based on those levels, Arizona will again lose 18% of its total Colorado River allocation, while Mexico's goes down 5%. The reduction for Nevada—which receives far less water than Arizona, California or Mexico—will stay at 7%. The cuts announced are in the same "Tier 1" category that were in effect this year and in 2022, when the first federal cutbacks on the Colorado River took effect and magnified the crisis on the river. Even deeper cuts followed in 2023. Farmers in Arizona were hit hardest by those cuts. Heavier rains and other water-saving efforts by Arizona, California and Nevada somewhat improved the short-term outlook for Lake Mead and Lake Powell, which is upstream of Mead on the Utah-Arizona border. Officials said the two reservoirs were at 37% capacity. They lauded the ongoing efforts by Arizona, California and Nevada to save more water, which are in effect until 2026. The federal government is paying water users in those states for much of that conservation. Meanwhile, states, tribes and others are negotiating how they will share water from the river after 2026, when many current guidelines governing the river expire. The community of Short Creek lies along the Utah/Arizona border in the town of Colorado City. The area is surrounded by massive red rock formations on one side, and desert on the other side. The town is divided by a road called “U-zona” with Utah on one side of the road, and Arizona on the other. While this may seem like a simple, quirky little feature at first, this location was chosen strategically, so that the residents could flee from one state to another in order to evade the government. This community is home to many FLDS community members, and this town is the setting in which Warren Jeffs started to gain total control over his followers. Born in Salt Lake City, Hunter has always had a tender passion for helping others. At the age of 16, he underwent a life-threatening traumatic brain injury that solidified his passion for the health service industry. Modern medicine saved his life and from then on, he was certain about choosing a career centered on healthcare and improving the lives of others. Hunter began his professional journey working for Intermountain Healthcare, a Utah-based health system at the time consisting of 22 hospitals, 185 clinics, and 39,000 employees. During this time, he quickly acquired a Master's in Business Administration, and aspired to one-day become the chief administrator for a large urban hospital. Shortly thereafter, he was given a role administering system-wide community health initiatives through using data-driven decision making. In 2017, Hunter married his collegiate sweetheart- Savannah Barlow. Savannah's family was previously members of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), a religious group that was headquartered on the Utah / Arizona border during the early 2000s. In its current state, Savannah's rural hometown of Colorado City is rebuilding from years of trauma and poverty, and lacks many basic needs such as public transportation, job opportunities, access to secondary education, and affordable and accessible healthcare; all impacting the lives of thousands of rural residents. Witnessing the medical and social needs existing in this community, Hunter's primary focus shifted to Utah's rural healthcare system, specifically safety net programs that serve rural and underserved communities. In December, 2018, Hunter relocated and began the early stages of development for Creek Valley Health Clinic, a nonprofit community health center which is located in his wife's hometown of Colorado City, AZ. Since its origination, this nonprofit has grown from a shared vision to now impacting over 4,000 unique patients along the Arizona Strip. The creation of Creek Valley Health Clinic has created 30 new jobs in the rural community, and now has an annual operating budget of over $3M. Hunter is currently the Chief Executive Officer for Creek Valley Health Clinic, and has been the primary author of over 20 successfully funded grant awards, together equating to over $7.6 million of grant funding from federal, state, local, and foundation sources. Hunter has also been vocal and active in transforming the way state governments view healthcare in rural Bordertown communities; setting the stage for improved rural health access and economic development, specifically in Utah and Arizona. Beyond the community health center's continued growth and development, Hunter has recently began business consulting, specifically assisting startup and nonprofit organizations understand how to leverage grant funding to support their mission. He hopes to soon provide grant-writing and other business workshops to assist organization's make big differences in small and rural communities.
National Polygamy Advocate ™ Mark Henkel was interviewed by producer Kerry O'Connor for "On the Record w/ Greta Van Susteren" on FOX News television network, on May 18, 2006. This was the first of nine (1of9) discussions with this producer over the following months in 2006. As Warren Jeffs was still "on the lam," and the first season of HBO's “Big Love” was still be broadcast, the producer for this show on FOX wanted to present "the other side of polygamy." Mark Henkel provided some quick education. He helped the producer understand that not all polygamy occurs “in the Mormonland bubble” of Utah/Arizona. He adamantly declared that normal families in UCAP, Unrelated Consenting Adult Polygamy, equally oppose the crimes for which Warren Jeffs was being sought and accused (and later convicted). And Henkel told a story of one family in the TruthBearer.org organization that had been sued by a violent wife-beating ex-husband to get back child custody only because anti-polygamy laws were “on the books,” to allow him to do so - costing the family thousands of dollars to defend against that which otherwise would have been easily dismissed as a frivolous lawsuit. "So the existence of the legal law can be used to abuse with the civil law," explained Henkel. The producer exclaimed, “Wow!” and she expressed how she could see how that was possible by such laws being "on the books." Mark Henkel and the producer developed a positive rapport. She even laughed positively when Mark Henkel gave the soundbite of “marriage-phobic baby daddy males” in a contemporary society, while the hypocrisy remains of criminalizing caring husbands who deliberately want marriage responsibilities with UCAP polygamy. Thus began several interviews in trying to find ways for the producer to put Mark Henkel on their show. http://www.NationalPolygamyAdvocate.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nationalpolygamyadvocate/support

However, the window to take action to fight climate change is not yet closed. Elizabeth Kolbert joins Evan Osnos, filling in for Dorothy Wickenden, to discuss the I.P.C.C. report; the politics of climate change; and her recent reporting from the Utah-Arizona border, where climate change has had a surprising effect on a national landmark.

Short Creek is a community on the Utah/Arizona border divided by much more than a state line. On one side are fundamentalist, polygamous Mormons who believe the town should be run by God—and his prophet. On the other are ex-believers who want democracy—and the right to believe (or not believe) as they want. When the prophet, Warren Jeffs, goes to prison for sex crimes, the community has to face its painful past...and struggle to define its future. From Witness Docs and Critical Frequency, hosts Ash Sanders and Sarah Ventre move beyond the headlines and embed in the community to bring you Unfinished: Short Creek, a very American story about the battle between freedom of religion and freedom from religion that asks whether people on two sides of a deep divide can rediscover common ground. National Polygamy Advocate ™ Mark Henkel was interviewed by Jennifer Dobner for the Associated Press (the AP newswire), on July 26, 2006. This brief discussion focused on the media problem within the "Mormonland Bubble of Utah/Arizona," and how AP articles (which covers a much larger audience than that local area) were still not making the necessary descriptive differentiations to accurately clarify and disassociate criminals such as the FLDS as not the same thing as normal Unrelated Consenting Adult Polygamy (UCAP) families. The writer even acknowledged, "You make a good point - that I could be adding this other stuff," and later confirmed, "I don't necessarily disagree with you." http://www.NationalPolygamyAdvocate.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nationalpolygamyadvocate/support
National Polygamy Advocate ™ Mark Henkel was interviewed for Fox News by Andrew O'Reilly, on September 4, 2019. Earlier that week, Utah State Senator Deidre Hederson announced that she would be proposing a new bill in the coming January 2020 session to reduce the crime of polygamy from a felony to an infraction (i.e., equivalent to a parking ticket). The purpose of the proposed bill would be to empower polygamists to feel safe from prosecution to report real crimes without fear of their families being jailed and separated. This interview sought Mark Henkel's "take" on this proposed bill. While being hopeful, he intentionally lowered expectations with pessimism by explaining the larger problem of that geographic area: the religiocentric "Mormonland Bubble" of Utah/Arizona (et al) does not believe in "separation of church and state." Mark Henkel explained how those ("Mormonland") State governments and nedia all obey the dictates the "mainstream" LDS institution by purposely and always refusing to accurately identify the differentiation of "Mormon polygamy" (from other polygamy) only because the LDS institution dictates that "no one" (government or media) may use the adjective "Mormon" in news reporting about Mormon polygamists (et al) to actually be accurate. This concise interview succinctly provides a detailed short-history of the anti-polygamy from the 1800s, the federal subterfuge that bypassed the 10th Amendment prohibition of Marriage Control, the modern Supreme Court decisions that would overturn anti-polygamy laws, and more. Citing examples that no no one would criminalize all dieters because of Karen Carpenter, criminalize all teachers because of Mary Kay Letourneau, or criminalize all football coaches because of Jerry Sandusky, Mark Henkel showed the fallacy how it makes no sense to criminalize all UCAP, Unrelated Consenting Adult Polygamy, because of cults or criminals. This interview also includes a number of powerful soundbites, including, "When you GENERALIZE to CRIMINALIZE, you TYRANNIZE." (NOTE: The bill did successfully pass in both houses of the Utah State Legislature in March 2020, got signed by the Utah Governor, and was set to be effective on May 12, 2020.) http://www.NationalPolygamyAdvocate.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nationalpolygamyadvocate/support
On this episode of Big Blend Radio, travel writer Debbie Stone shares her experience in Monument Valley Park (known also by its Navajo or Diné name, Tsé Bii’ Ndzisgaii, which roughly translates to mean Valley of Rocks). Straddling the Utah-Arizona border and occupying nearly 92,000 acres, the park comprises a small piece of the semi-autonomous Navajo Nation, the largest Native American territory in the U.S. Fragile pinnacles of rock are surrounded by miles of dramatic mesas, monoliths and buttes, dwarf shrubs and trees, and sandy, windblown desert. Sandstone masterpieces tower at heights of 400 to 1,000 feet, rising from the earth in an effort to meet the sky. The landscape overwhelms the senses and even the most jaded can’t help but be spellbound by these enduring images of the American West. Read Debbie's article on NationalParkTraveling.com. National Polygamy Advocate ™ Mark Henkel was interviewed for The Arizona Republic by Linda Valdez, in Phoenix, Arizona, on July 3, 2006. The reporter, having written previous articles about the Mormon polygamists in what Mark Henkel calls the "Mormonland bubble" of Utah/Arizona, was rather biased in her thereby thinking that "all" polygamy is supposedly associated with the crimes of the criminal cult FLDS, Warren Jeffs, and Tom Green from the previous years. She learned much from this extensive education on many related issues. Mark Henkel definitively differentiated the difference between Mormon Polygamy vs Christian Polygamy and how other different forms of polygamy are defined by their respective applicable adjectives. He also expained how, despite the "mainstream LDS" demands that media obey their religious institution and not use the word "Mormon" to identify Mormon Polygamy (to instead call them as the unmodifed term, "polygamist"), doing that is a false description that wrongly and misleadingly suggests that all other forms of UCAP, Unrelated Consenting Adult Polygamy, supposedly also do whatever the crimes those media stories are reporting. Numerous arguments about polygamy in the Bible were explained. The "Polygamy Rights Win-Win Solution" to end the marriage debate was expained. And Mark Henkel detailed how de-criminalizing polygamy for junrelated consenting adults can pro-actively give victims of other real crimes the freedom to openly and safely report those crimes without fear that their polygamous familes could still be destroyed by law enforcement. This hour-plus interview unquestionably provides any listener with a comprehensive education about the issues. http://www.NationalPolygamyAdvocate.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nationalpolygamyadvocate/support

National Polygamy Advocate ™ Mark Henkel was interviewed for The Standard-Examiner by Nancy Van Valkenburg, in Ogden, Utah, on March 2, 2006, for an article about the then-new fictional TV series, "Big Love" on HBO. As she was reporting from what Mark Henkel identifed as "the Mormonland Bubble" of Utah/Arizona, he educated her about different forms of UCAP, Unrelated Consenting Adult Polygamy. This interview provided the reporter with a comprehensive explanation of how Mormon Polygamy is not Christian Polygamy and the differences there between. Despite all this education, the newspaper decided to take took a negative position and did not even mention within the article any of that which the reporter had learned, instead continuing false stereotypes. http://www.NationalPolygamyAdvocate.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nationalpolygamyadvocate/support
National Polygamy Advocate ™ Mark Henkel was interviewed by Jennifer Dahl for KUTV 2, a CBS-TV affiliate, in Salt Lake City, Utah, on March 24, 2006. This was a non-aired research-interview about polygamy beyond the Mormon polygamy paradigm. Coming on the heels of the then-recent hostile mis-reporting by 2 other corporate media from what Mark Henkel called "The Mormonland Bubble" of Utah/Arizona, the interview began with Mark Henkel being rather strongly assertive about not being mis-represented. Jennifer Dahl seemed to quickly understand how such a strong posture demonstrated a valid "pathos" that anyone would normally have when so mis-represented. She rightly made clear that she was not with those other organizations. Upon learning through the interview, not only did Jennifer Dahl thereafter demonstrate that she was indeed learning the differentation of various forms of polygamy, she even positively and professionally acknowledged the actual positions being explained. Thereby turning the interview into a rather friendly and educational discussion, Jennifer Dahl learned about the different forms of UCAP, Unrelated Consenting Adult Polygamy, and the overall National Polygamy Rights Movement for Consenting Adults. http://www.NationalPolygamyAdvocate.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nationalpolygamyadvocate/support

He can also be found at many of our community’s events, both behind and in front of the camera. Derrick recently returned from an intense journey along the Arizona Trail, a legendary 800-mile trail that unravels from the Utah-Arizona border down South to Mexico. Derrick’s hike was an FKT record attempt that took months of planning. But this year, it was not meant to be; his plans were cut short when Hurricane Rosa brought unseasonal, torrential rains to the trail, swamping the panorama and ending Derrick’s excursion. Derrick joined us to discuss his experience, both in its challenge and its splendor.
