In this episode, Lindsay and Bryan dive into the 1860s, the decade when Mormon polygamy reached its statistical and cultural peak. Drawing on census data, diaries, oral histories, and the sharp observations of British explorer Richard Francis Burton, they examine how plural marriage became woven into Utah's theology, politics, economics, and daily life. With Netflix's new documentary on the modern fundamentalist Mormon church coming out today – we thought it was the perfect time to revisit our episode on Warren Jeffs's FLDS, to give some much-needed context... According to Warren Jeffs' thousands of followers, he was the leader of a secretive but devoted religion – their prophet, and the representative of God on Earth. But according to US law, he was a dangerous, totalitarian, child-molesting horror with over 80 wives – some married off as young as 12. Still, according to the church, Earthly laws are no match for the voice of God.In this episode, we explore the story behind the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints: how the visions of a charismatic, seventeen-year-old farmhand called Joseph Smith grew to become a major world religion; how plural marriage caused a major rift in the church; and how its teachings were warped into a systematic cult of child abuse, underage sex, and absolute power.--Patreon - Ad-free & Bonus EpisodesYouTube - Full-length Video EpisodesTikTok / InstagramSources and more available on redhandedpodcast.com

What do Land Deeds in Nauvoo have to do with D&C 132? It turns out there is a controversy where an argument is made for and against 132 being legit vs forgery. Mary Ann Clements weighs in on the controversy. Check out our conversation with Mary Ann about her chapter in Secret Covenants... Recent research delving into Nauvoo land deeds offers fascinating insights, not only into Joseph Smith's financial dealings but also into the controversy surrounding early polygamy. Mary Ann Clemens, one of the authors in "Secret Covenants: New Insights into Mormon Polygamy," highlights how land deeds have become a focal point for both proving and disproving claims about Joseph Smith's early practice of polygamy. The William Clayton Journal: Forgery or Validation? One of the central debates in skeptical circles concerns whether the William Clayton Journal is a forgery. Mary Ann Clemens disagrees with this argument. Her reasoning, and the focus of her recent research, involves the detailed examination of Nauvoo land deeds, specifically those made on July 12, 1843, to Emma Smith. Don Bradley's Argument for Validation: According to Don Bradley, the July 12, 1843 deeds to Emma Smith serve as an element that confirms or validates the William Clayton diaries. This date is significant because it's the day the polygamy revelation (Section 132) was written. The traditional narrative suggests that Hyrum Smith attempted to convince Emma of polygamy that day, but Emma vehemently denied it. As a result of this conversation, a decision was made to deed Emma all the unencumbered lots in Nauvoo. William Clayton's journal, a couple of days later, corroborates this, mentioning the drawing up of the deed and giving Emma the lots. The deeds were initially recorded in the Nauvoo Register book in 1843 by William Clayton himself, which some skeptics distrust due to his involvement. However, in July 1844, just after Joseph Smith's death, these deeds were also recorded in the Hancock County deed records, providing an independent record that, from Bradley's perspective, confirms the story in Clayton's journal. The Skeptic's Counter-Argument: Michelle Stone's Research Despite the evidence, some see these same deeds as disproving William Clayton's journal. Michelle Stone's research unearthed a fascinating detail: A July 12, 1843 draft deed to Hyrum Smith: Stone discovered a deed, dated July 12, 1843, that was fully written out but never signed or completed. This draft was intended for Joseph Smith's brother, Hyrum, and listed many of the same properties that were later deeded to Emma. Stone argues that because there's no explanation for why Hyrum was receiving these properties, it couldn't have been related to polygamy. She questions why the Joseph Smith Papers project labeled this a "draft." Why "Draft"? And the True Story Behind the Deeds Mary Ann Clemens provides clarification, agreeing with the "draft" designation for several reasons: The draft deed to Hyrum had Hyrum's name scratched out and Emma's name written in on the back.. It was never signed or recorded anywhere. Another draft deed to Emma, also dated July 12, was found. This one listed an extra lot not on county records and didn't finish the boilerplate language. These drafts are critical. While people like Michelle Stone argue they represent distinct transactions or prove deception,

A CRITICAL TIME FOR THE SAINTS, Part 1 of Chapter 5 of The Church and The Gospel Pages 47 to 57 1886 to 1889 Leading up to 1886 Since the time of Joseph Smith's first vision in 1820, the powers of the adversary have intensified against the restored Gospel. Ministers have spewed out their religious poison against it; members of the media have written lies in order to sell more publications; and the government has passed laws and more laws to “exterminate the Mormons.” The most controversial doctrine and practice that has caused the greatest furor has been plural marriage. The LDS Church officially accepted plural marriage as a tenet of their faith in 1852. On that occasion Orson Pratt delivered the first public sermon on the subject, appropriately entitled “Celestial Marriage.” He began by saying: It is quite unexpected to me, brethren and sisters, to be called upon to address you this forenoon; and still more so, to address you upon the principle which has been named, namely, a plurality of wives. (JD 1:53) However, he was up to the job, and his powerful sermon covered over 12 written pages in the Journal of Discourses. It stands today as one of the finest speeches upon that subject. Two excerpts are included here:

National Polygamy Advocate ™ Mark Henkel was interviewed by Kirsten Fenswick of The Incubator of FOX TV Studios, on August 29, 2007 - Part 3. The producer was looking for polygamous families to produce a documentary. Prior to the interview, Mark Henkel had informed the producer that past situations with FOX had caused families in UCAP, Unrelated Consenting Adult Polygamy, to distrust it as a "Manufactured News Corporation." As she made what Mark Henkel identified as a "Circus Act Request" ("C.A.R."), the producer then defaulted to Mormon Polygamy. Again, Mark Henkel corrected her to move beyond stereotype. Finally, Mark Henkel Henkel explained the problem, “Putting a family on display, like a creature under glass or behind a zoo cage, is nothing more than a 'Circus Act' to make people go 'Oo and Ah!' – and at the end of the day, never changes political opinion for us.” The final, remaining part of this interview will be aired in the next coming episode of this podcast. http://www.NationalPolygamyAdvocate.com --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nationalpolygamyadvocate/support

National Polygamy Advocate ™ Mark Henkel was post-interviewed a second time by Zehra Mamdani for Columbia News Service, on March 4, 2008. This is Part 10 of the second post-interview. It follows after an article she had written as a student for the Columbia News Service, from interviews she had conducted with Mark Henkel earlier in January, 2008. After the article had contained many negativities that needed to be corrected, Mark Henkel requested of the writer to conduct an initial post-interview on February 26, 2008 - to which she agreed. The two also agreed to have a second post-interview later, which they conducted on March 4, 2008. This episode is the tenth part of that second discussion. In this Part 10 segment, Mark Henkel clarified a reference that had been attributed to a deputy sheriff. Mark Henkel noted that that man was only familiar with Mormon Polygamy and that the man knew nothing about any other forms of UCAP, Unrelated Consenting Adult Polygamy. The writer declared, "Next!" Brian Hales, a leading scholar in LDS Polygamy (otherwise known as Mormon Polygamy), sits down with Jake for a heart-to-heart on his learning about polygamy, his study into polygamy, and why he chooses to stay an active member in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as the Mormon Church or LDS Church). Learning about the polygamous history in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints might cause you to ask a lot of very important questions. The same happened for Brian Hales. And when Brian started his studies, very little information existed on the topic. Brian then dedicated decades to researching all of the facts and went on to publish multiple books and articles about his findings. Brian has chosen to stay in the Church of Jesus Christ, despite all of the faith-challenging information about polygamy and Joseph Smith's practice of polygamy. We're continuing our discussions with Dr. Newell Bringhurst. We've talked about the controversial topics of blacks and the priesthood, as well as Fawn Brodie, and we're going to continue to talk about controversial topics with Dr. Bringhurst. What is Bringhurst's Approach to Controversy? We'll ask him in this episode? https://youtu.be/NSLI_s5hbrU GT: Apparently you enjoy controversy. You've talked about blacks and the priesthood and then you talk about polygamy. What are your latest polygamy books that you've put together? Newell: I've been involved with Craig Foster, a co-author, co-editor. The two of us together did a series of volumes. They are anthologies, collections of essays by various contributors as kind of a trilogy. Volume 1 is the Persistence of Polygamy: Joseph Smith and the Origins or Mormon Polygamy. That was initially published in 2009 and we focus on the controversial aspects of Joseph Smith and his involvement and practice of polygamy.[1] How does Newell deal with controversial topics? Mentions his books have many perspectives from many different authors. For example, Newell: Don Bradley did an essay on Fanny Alger, arguing that Joseph's marriage to Fanny was actually a marriage and not an affair, not a “nasty, filthy affair” as Oliver Cowdery said. I tend to take issue with him. I allowed him to make his case and he gave a good argument for his position. I felt like it should be out there for people to consider. I've always considered myself to be fair-minded when I look at controversial issues. I want to make sure that people are aware of all sides of an issue. What does he like most about the study of Mormon history? Newell: I think that's one of the healthy things about the field of Mormon studies. You can disagree and not be disagreeable and still remain friends and enjoy camaraderie with people you disagree with. I think that's one of the great things about the whole field of Mormon studies. Check out our conversation….. Yesterday on Access Utah we talked with members of a modern-day polygamous community. Today, in part two of our series, we'll learn how polygamy began in America. When Joseph Smith began to reveal and teach the doctrine of plural marriage in 1841, even stalwart church members like Brigham Young were shocked and confused. In her new book, “Revelation, Resistance, and Mormon Polygamy--The Introduction and Implementation of the Principle, 1830-1853” (USU Press) historian Merina Smith considers the ideological, historical, and psychological elements of the process and captures the emotional and cultural detail of this exciting and volatile period in Mormon history.
