This is a discussion of a lecture by Dr. D. Todd Harrison, who is a prominent and influential leader in the LDS Church. The lecture itself focuses on early revelations in the Doctrine and Covenants, specifically sections 23-26. These sections contain divine instructions and callings for individuals like Oliver Cowdery, Hyrum Smith, Samuel Smith, Joseph Smith Sr., and Joseph Knight, emphasizing their specific duties within the early church and highlighting the importance of humility and service. Additionally, the revelations addressed to Joseph Smith and his wife Emma Smith offer guidance, promises, and assignments related to the translation of the Book of Mormon, comforting Joseph, expounding scripture, selecting hymns, and adhering to God's commandments.

Section 23 - Historical Background: Shortly after the organization of the church, probably between April 6 to 11, 1830, Joseph was approached by five faithful men desiring to know their respective duties in the new church. These five individuals included Joseph's father, Joseph Smith Sr, two brothers, Hyrum and Samuel Smith, Oliver Cowdery and Joseph Knight, Sr. Joseph inquired of the Lord and received this revelation. Recap: Oliver Cowdery was addressed first and warned against pride; urged to witness to others the truth; Hyrum was called to strengthen the church; Samuel was to work within the church for strengthening the members but not yet to preach outside the church; Joseph Knight Sr was also called to serve in the Kingdom forever and pray vocally and encouraged to join the church and take up his cross. Section 24 - Historical Background: Immediately following the organization of the church, persecution came quickly and became intense. Joseph was harassed with arrests and had to evade mobs for safety. Joseph had begun to receive revelations concerning the book of Genesis which is recorded in the Pearl of Great Price, book of Moses. During these times of persecution and revelation, Joseph received the following revelation. Recap: Joseph is encouraged to magnify his office and to be patient in his afflictions; he is to seek safety among the members of the church; Oliver Cowdery is to be diligent in declaring the gospel, thinking nothing of himself, and he will receive strength. Section 25 - Historical Background: The persecutions spewing against her husband Joseph had been a great trial for Emma Smith. Her uncle was a minister responsible for much of the persecution against Joseph, especially during the translation of the plates. This persecution drove Joseph and Emma from Harmony to Fayette, NY. Arrested and nearly mobbed several times, Joseph had to constantly flee. During this time, Emma had been faithful and supportive despite trials and hardships. Never had Emma seen the Gold Plates yet she didn't complain. Now, however, Mary Whitmore had the privilege of seeing the plates. Feeling slighted, the Lord gave Emma this strengthening and comforting revelation calling Emma an “elect lady.” Recap: Emma is forgiven for her sins and is called an elect lady; she is to be Joseph's scribe and to compile a hymnbook for the members. All members are called to beware of pride and to keep the commandments. Section 26 - Historical Background: During the weeks since the publication of the Book of Mormon, Samuel Smith had been diligently trying to get people to buy the sacred book. Since there was nothing but hostility around Palmyra, he went 15 miles to the town of Mendon. Finally he returned home with all but 2 of the original books. He gave one of the books to a widow and the other went to a respected minister John Green. Reverend Green read the book, believed it and eagerly passed it on to Phineas Young and then to Brigham Young and Heber C Kimball, all reading and finding belief and conversion. This resulted in the uniting of converts and a strong branch of the church near Mendon. Meanwhile, Joseph, Oliver and John Whitmer were in Harmony wondering what they could do to exert themselves, and the following short revelation was given. Recap: The Lord tells Joseph, Oliver and John Whitmer to get involved in 4 things, namely the fervent study of the scriptures, the organization of the branch in Colesville, perform the essential work on their farmland and then to prepare for the next church conference. The importance of common consent is given.

In this episode of the Exploring Washington State Podcast, Scott Cowan welcomes Kendall Jones, founder of the Washington Beer Blog, to discuss the history and future of craft beer in Washington State. Kendall shares his journey from an aspiring rock star to a renowned voice in the beer community, weaving together stories of personal discovery, local breweries, and the unique character of Washington beer. From Bellevue to Blogging Kendall's story begins in Bellevue, Washington, where his teenage dreams of becoming a rock star shaped his early years. Although music didn't become his career, Kendall's creativity and passion for storytelling found a new outlet in writing. His career path shifted again when he discovered the world of craft beer, a moment sparked by a life-changing sip of Samuel Smith's Tadcaster Porter. That experience opened the door to exploring beer differently, and Kendall began documenting his journey. Eventually, he launched the Washington Beer Blog. This website quickly became a trusted resource for beer enthusiasts across the state. The Craft Beer Boom in Washington Washington's craft beer industry has grown immensely since the early 2000s, and Kendall had a front-row seat to its evolution. When Kendall first considered writing a book about local breweries, he realized the market was expanding too rapidly to keep up. Instead, he turned to blogging, a format that allowed him to document the dynamic changes as they happened. Kendall reflects on the early days of now-iconic breweries like Georgetown Brewing, whose Bodhizafa IPA helped define the style of Washington IPAs. He discusses how smaller, independent breweries have contributed to the state's reputation as a leader in craft beer and the unique challenges they face in a competitive market. The Stories Behind the Beer Beyond the beer itself, Kendall has always been captivated by the people and stories that define the industry. From the innovative brewers crafting bold new flavors to the small business owners overcoming challenges, Kendall's blog has highlighted the human side of brewing. He shares anecdotes from his years of experience, offering listeners a deeper appreciation for the passion and hard work that go into every pint. Scott and Kendall also discuss the importance of community in the craft beer world. Local breweries often become gathering places that reflect the personality of their neighborhoods. Whether it's a cozy taproom in a small town or a bustling brewery in Seattle, each spot tells a story about the people and culture of the area. What's Next for Craft Beer? Kendall explores some challenges facing the craft beer industry, from rising production costs to changing consumer preferences. He explains how breweries adapt by experimenting with lighter styles, like lagers, and embracing trends such as non-alcoholic beers. Despite the obstacles, Kendall remains optimistic about the future. He points to brewers' continued innovation and creativity as a reason to be excited. New breweries are still opening, and established ones are finding ways to stay relevant in an ever-changing landscape. Why Washington Beer Matters Washington's beer culture is more than just a collection of breweries—it reflects the state's creativity, resilience, and sense of community. Kendall believes the industry's success lies in its ability to evolve while staying true to its roots. From the farmers growing hops in the Yakima Valley to the brewers experimenting with new styles, Washington beer celebrates local ingenuity. This episode is a must-listen for anyone who loves craft beer or is curious about the stories behind Washington's vibrant brewing industry. Whether you're a seasoned beer enthusiast or new to craft brews, Kendall's insights and passion will inspire you. Tune in for a conversation that delves deep into the evolution of craft beer, the people behind it, and what makes Washington a special place for beer lovers.

Title: Languaging in Hampton Roads Episode 8 : Road Trip in Hampton Roads: Uncovering the Origins of Geographical Names Hosts: Jill Winkowski and Prue Salasky Date: Sept. 5, 2024 Length: 31:45 min Publication Frequency: Fourth Friday (approx) of each month Co-hosts Jill Winkowski and Prue Salasky take a road trip to the far corners of Hampton Roads in S.E. Va. They're in search of the provenance of the names, Elephant's Fork in Suffolk, Cuffeytown in Chesapeake, and Chic's Beach in Virginia Beach, and what those names tell us about the history and culture of the region. The duo talk about toponymy, or the study of place names, and semiotics, the study of signs, and how those disciplines apply to their discoveries. They share the rules and regulations involved in the official naming process. At the state level there's the Virginia Board on Geographic Names: Senior Map Archivist, Library of Virginia, 800 East Broad St. Richmond, Va. 23219; 804-692-3617; vabgn@lva.virginia.gov. Nationally, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, BGN, was fully established in 1947; its naming conventions include allowing only 5 places nationwide to have names that include an apostrophe (Martha's Vineyard is one of them). The BGN works closely with state, tribal and local governments, as well as the general public. At Elephant's Fork the duo uncover a community recognition of the name but no understanding of how it came to be; subsequent research, including the use of the free digitized archive of Virginia newspapers, virginiachronicle.com, unearthed its origin in a giant tin elephant used to advertise the emporium of one H.J. Bowen in 1903. Stories attached to the name included that of Mary Chapman, as recorded in Tidewater Voices, https://digitalcommons.odu.edu/tidewatervoices, an ongoing digital archive project of Old Dominion University in Norfolk; and that of Angelo Scott, a current Suffolk resident, who recounted his perceived experience of abrupt integration as a 2nd-grader in 1971. At Cuffeytown, a historic community in Chesapeake founded by free blacks in the 1700 they recount their difficulties in finding the historic Cuffeytown cemetery, the final resting place for the Cuffeytown 13. These were Civil War veterans who fought for the Union. Crops at peak growth prevented their access. They did visit the AME Zion Church, founded in 1866, and learned there the identities of the 13 veterans, almost half of them Cuffeys. (See the below list) 5th USCT Pvt. Walter Smith, Co. C From there the intrepid pair took the back roads to Chic's Beach in Virginia Beach, whose recorded history dates back to Native Americans and then the earliest European settlers, but whose current nickname harks back to the mid-20th century. The bayfront neighborhood, officially called Chesapeake Beach, saw a flurry of real estate dealings in the early part of the 20th century and was built out by the 1960s. Local lore attributes the nickname that stuck, Chic's Beach, to one Luther ‘Chic' Ledington who operated a hot dog stand in a beachfront building until 1967. There's so much to learn from the names we see around us daily! Send feedback and questions to languaginghr@gmail.com.

Dr. Samuel Smith and Dr. Carey Roberts join the Conversations That Matter Podcast to discuss the legacy of the Puritans in America, specifically their contribution to social and political dynamics. Dr. Smith recently appeared in the 1607 Project where he criticized the way American Puritans set up their society in New England while also praising their theology. What should Americans think of the Puritans? Most historical surveys credit them with founding the United States and in Christian circles they are deeply revered. Was their impact as significant as its portrayed today or is there another narrative in which Southern Anglicans and Presbyterians played a more significant role in contrast to the Puritans? Right before hitting rock bottom, Samuel Smith was on top. Or at least, it felt like he was. When the oil field crashed in 2009, Samuel needed a new way of making money. So, he googled “how to make money online” — and discovered what he calls the “wonderful rabbit hole of affiliate marketing and pay-per-click marketing.” Before long, it felt like his earnings had no cap. “I remember my first $100 day and my first $1,000 day,” he says. “By 2011, I was spending like $5,000 a day on Facebook, which was the most you could spend on an ad account back then, and it was nothing because I would make $7,000 a day in return. I thought I'd made it. I remember telling my buddy that I found a cheat code to life.” But, as Samuel says, all good things have “an equal and opposite reaction.” He was making more money than he'd thought possible, but he was a bad steward of it. He wasn't taking care of his finances, and he wasn't taking care of himself, his diet, or his relationships. What Samuel was doing a lot of us was drinking. And when the time came that his business faced a challenge, he wasn't prepared. In this episode of the Working For a Dream Podcast, Samuel tells Patrick about the “complete collapse and absolute disaster” of that first business, what it was like to hit rock bottom after believing himself already retired at age 36, and how Samuel is doing business differently — and sustainably — today. What You'll Learn: How drinking helped fuel his life's rock bottom moment and lost him hundreds of thousands of dollars — and how he's recovered with two seven-figure-earning businesses today How his life has changed for the better since he ditched the toxic masculinity instilled in him in his youth Why shifting his business attitude from making money to guiding people has been so impactful And much more! Favorite Quote: “What I've discovered is that most entrepreneurs have all been through the same stuff. You have a point in your story where you're sitting in the truck crying. I have a point in my story where my mom hugged me and whispered into my ear to ‘sort your f***ing life out.' Every entrepreneur seems to have hit bottom.” — Samuel Smith How to Get Involved: Connect with Samuel: Facebook Instagram The Small Business Surgeon Connect with Patrick: LinkedIn Facebook Instagram How to Get Involved: Patrick Bolanos is a serial entrepreneur, business owner, and CEO of Trailer King Builders in Houston, Texas. He was raised in Nicaragua, exposed to extreme poverty, and also had the fortune of being exposed to life in the United States traveling back and forth to both countries. After college, Patrick's career took him into the corporate world of banking where he learned the important lessons of understanding what you're selling and why it's important to believe in it. Back in December of 2017, Patrick was fired from his job as a CFO for a Restaurant Group. With only $500 to his name, rent due, his wife, 3 children at home, and one on the way, he was forced to figure out how to pull his family out of this financial abyss that was strangling his life. With no knowledge of how to build a trailer, Patrick simply figured all of it out and has now built it into the thriving empire of what's now become Trailer King Builders.
Mike Winther gives a lecture about education at a homeschool convention. Homeschool families take a personal interest in their children's education. He talks about biblical ideas of education. He also talks about some Puritan ideas of education which are consistent with biblical models. This episode is about children of God versus children of Caesar, and it's really about who owns our children. God owns our children, but parents are the caretakers and are held accountable for what they do with their children. This episode is for anyone trying to make sense of how to best educate their children. You'll Learn: [02:23] Plato was a Greek philosopher. Like many philosophers, he wrestled with the nature of man. Is the nature of man good or evil? [03:04] The judeo-Christian view is that man is born with a sin nature. Plato said that man was essentially good but sometimes does evil. [03:49] Plato's answer to where sin comes from is a learned nature from your parents. We have an evil problem in society, because young people learn evil. [04:57] In Plato's Republic, you find the most honest noble person and make them the Philosopher King with absolute power. The next level of wise people are made the schoolmasters. [06:07] The children are taken away from the parents as soon as they are weaned. [07:43] Fundamental to Plato's Utopia is fixing the educational system. [08:16] Deuteronomy Chapter 6. [10:05] We should always be instructing our children. [11:40] Is it possible to make education an idol? Education is a means to an end, it's not the end itself. [14:06] How much of our future should we mortgage for an education? [16:27] Mike talks about things that the Bible tells us that we shouldn't do. [19:08] Mike talks about the two economic systems in our world and why socialism is biblically wrong. [22:04] What should we teach? The Puritans worked hard to apply scripture to every area of life. [22:30] Cotton Mather had a lot to say about education. [25:13] Reading and writing is secondary to teaching about the savior. [29:14] Serving God first and meeting the needs of others. Our careers and occupations are simply serving others. [30:40] How our worldviews shouldn't be compartmentalized. [36:10] Methodology and the debate about how we teach. The Trivium and the three stages of learning. The grammar stage. The logic stage. The rhetoric stage. [40:55] We should move towards the goal of educating in a Christian environment. [45:38] Mike talks about how the public schools have way more access to your children's mind than you have. [50:08] History shows that people in the past who only had an eighth grade education can speak, read and write better than current students. [50:49] Mike shares quotes by James Carter and Samuel Smith and Horace Mann. [55:16] Your children learn the doctrine of whatever school you put them in. [56:49] Problems in America are educational problems. [57:13] Karl Marx's 10 steps for bringing about communism or socialism. One fundamental aspect is free public education for children in schools. [01:01:15] Don't assume that a Christian college is safe. Give your kids all of the best foundations possible. [01:03:38] Challenge your kids with information. Over 180,000 more small businesses opened than closed in the last year. From March 2020 to March 2021, approximately 1.1 million new small businesses opened, according to data from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). That is 180,528 more small businesses that opened within this timeframe than close, according to Forbes. Samuel Smith has always been in business, from mowing yards and delivering newspapers at age 12, to building two seven figure companies before his mid 30's. Poor stewardship and an unchecked addiction to alcohol saw the meltdown and total collapse of his life and marriage, leading to rock bottom and broke when he should have been enjoying the fruits of his labor. Samuel has since been sober over four years, and now has two companies that he had built back into the mid six figure range, this time with the proper fundamentals and stewardship to ensure long term success. In 2020 when the world shut down, he began to follow his natural desires to teach and lead other business owners and help them avoid the mistakes and pitfalls that he went through. He talks openly and frankly about his failures in life and in business and how sobriety and focus have turned his life around helping other men and women realize that they are not alone and that they too can overcome their dependence on alcohol and addiction. He lives by the fact that there are no super humans in this world, only normal humans who decide to do super things and commit to them, one step at a time. He joined me this week to tell me more. How would you like to be known as an authority in your field? What benefits does it bring you? I have been known in four industries and featured in major magazines. In fact, I was on the front cover of a prominent mergers and acquisitions magazine. I utilize authority, and the power that comes with authority, to gain customers. I do that by doing the one thing that most people won't do: putting myself out there and proving that I'm the real deal. In a world where other people talk the talk, I like to walk the walk. I like inviting journalists to come and watch me do what I claim I can do. When you don't fail and succeed repeatedly, you have evidence that you are the real deal, and nothing gives you authority beyond that. So how can you build your authority? Today, I have two gentlemen who are both incredible at creating authority, and we will share our experience and tips with you. Let's welcome Zack Blakeney and Samuel Smith. Zack is a Self-Mastery and Consciousness Mentor for Leaders and Founders. Sam, also known as The Small Business Surgeon, helps business owners generate more revenue for their businesses. Tune in to SMART Businesses Do THIS and get meaningful insights on building your authority and attracting more people into your world!"People get very caught up in metrics–how many clicks I got, how many likes I got, all this other stuff–and they forget that every single click is actually a person." - Samuel Smith"If you want to shift reality, you have to be IN reality. If not, reality shifts you." - Zack BlakeneyIn This Episode:- Adam walks us through his journey of building his authority across four different industries and being featured in prominent publications- How Zack became so good at being an authority at what he does and his tips for doing it- Samuel talks about how he built his authority in the real estate industry by giving value- Adam shares how he crafted a Black Friday Promo which made him an authority in creating such promos- What pivotal step made Zack and Samuel realize that they have reached a certain level of authority in their respective communities?- A lesson on authority building from the creator of the Million Dollar Mastermind- How often should you post on social media, and what mistakes do people make that would cause them to fail? And much more…Resources Mentioned: - Get More Sales with UpsellsConnect with the Panelists: - Samuel Smith- Zack BlakeneyConnect with Adam Lyons:- Website- LinkedIn- Facebook- Instagram

Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 232 features an interview with Samuel Smith of Artificial Brain. Artificial Brain belong to a new generation of underground metal band that New York has become known for - one that combines speed, dissonance, melody, and stellar musicianship to create a sound that hearkens back to the classic death metal albums that emerged from the area, whilst simultaneously looking to the future (in both their progressive sensibility and science fiction themes). I spoke with bassist Samuel Smith about the sci-fi concepts that connect Artificial Brain's albums, and his thoughts about their music being labeled "dissonant death metal". We also discussed why their self-titled third album may sound more melodic than previous releases, and what the future holds for Artificial Brain. My thanks to Sam for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening. Sam threw away a 7-figure business because of an addiction and stubbornness. Check out what he has done since to build back up and dominate more than he ever has before. It all came down to one decision at his lowest point, which gave him the strength to make the next decision...then the next one.
Hard ciders are a fast-growing segment of the beverage universe. Made from many different types of apples and in a multitude of styles, they are naturally gluten free which further broadens their appeal. We have tried a few over the years starting in 2010 with Samuel Smith's Organic Cider and most recently we had the Blueberry Spaceship Box from Superstition Meadery. It is a category we really enjoy that we intend on exploring more. We will make good on that intention this week as we will be trying the Prickly Pearadise Prickly Pear Cider from 2 Towns Ciderhouse. This cider is made with a fusion of NW apples and prickly pear cactus fruit. It is available year round and has an ABV of 5.3%. What do you think?
