Recently Cristina Rosetti released her highly anticipated new book about Joseph Musser. Now if you know anything about Cristina you are well aware of her scholarship and how she has approaches the study of Mormon Fundamentalism. She has always done a very good job of portraying us fairly. Well today she joins me again on the podcast as we talk about her new book which covers Musser's ministry, his personal life, his relationships with the Woolley's, John Y Barlow, and even end up touching on the organization the new with Rulon Allred. From time to time in our conversation you will get to peek inside to the man he really was and just how much he both loved and sacrificed for the original teachings of the Restored Gospel. After listening to this conversation and reading the book I think you will find that your admiration and appreciation for Musser will only deepen. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dave-kirkenbower/support

For the first time on a podcast, scholar of Mormonism Cristina Rosetti discusses her Pentecostal background here on Mormon Book Reviews! Cristina shares her experience of converting to the Foursquare Church as a teenager. For a while she wanted to become the next Aimee Semple McPherson, the female founder of the denomination. Cristina recounts the fascinating history of McPherson and the church. She also describes witnessing speaking in tongues, healings, and an exorcism! We then discuss her "Born Again" conversion to the Catholic Faith. We then talk about how she got interested in Mormon Fundamentalism via her study of 19th Century communitarian religious groups. This led her to specialize in the Study of the History and Lived Experience of Mormon Fundamentalism. What makes Cristina's approach so unique is rather than focus on Polygamy, she became enamored with the doctrines of Fundamentalism. Especially Adam/God. Next week she and Moroni Lopez Jessop will be giving a special presentation at Sunstone, it is previewed here. I want to thank Cristina for coming on sharing with the audience some of her favorite books and telling her story.

Ok so I told you early on that that this podcast was a place for me to sit down with people I found really cool and interesting. Well this episode is like a dream come true for me. I had the opportunity to sit down with Cristina Rosetti. I am a huge fan of her work. She has spent her academic career studying Mormon Fundamentalism. Her work is respected by academics and Mormon Fundamentalists alike. Her work is both uncompromising and fair. In our conversation we cover how she became interested in Mormon Fundamentalism, how she gained access to so many fundamentalists, where she thinks Mormon fundamentalism is going, and her experiences working to pass the bill in Utah that would ultimately lead to the decriminalization of plural marriage. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dave-kirkenbower/support

You can now stream the first two episodes of Under the Banner of Heaven on Hulu. The 7-episode drama is a brand new adaptation of Jon Krakauer's book by the same name – which tells the story of one of Utah's most infamous and horrific crimes. Polygamy and the Church's Conflict with the US Government Cristina Rosetti and I talk about the build-up to the 1890 Manifesto known as Official Declaration 1 in the Doctrine and Covenants. The Manifesto is a result of decades of conflict with the US Government and was perhaps the major motivation for the Saints' move west. What is the legal history of plural marriage in the US and what finally brought about the Manifest from President Wilford Woodruff? Website - https://www.cwicmedia.com
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints considers itself the “restoration” of a complete Christianity that was lost centuries ago after the death of the biblical apostles. Several years ago, Denver Snuffer, a former Latter-day Saint, launched his Remnant movement, preaching that the Utah-based faith fell away from the truth after founder Joseph Smith was killed in 1844 and Brigham Young led his followers West. Now, yet another faction, called The Doctrine of Christ, has emerged. Phil Davis, a Latter-day Saint in Provo, asserts that Young murdered Smith and that Mormonism's first prophet recently returned to re-restore the church with Davis at its helm. On this week's show, Cristina Rosetti, a religious studies scholar at Claremont McKenna College in Southern California, discusses these groups, why some Latter-day Saints are joining them, how conspiracy theories play a role, and whether they pose any threat to the mainstream church.
Today on the Talk Mormonism podcast I am joined by Dr. Cristina Rosetti, author of a recently published paper for the July edition of the Journal of Mormon History titled: “Hysteria Excommunicatus: Loyalty Oaths, Excommunication, And the Forging of a Mormon Identity.” Cristina holds a PhD in religious studies from the University of California Riverside, and come fall, she'll be working as a visiting assistant professor at Claremont Mckenna College. Her research focuses on the history and lived experience of Mormon fundamentalists in the Intermountain West. She's also working on an upcoming biography of Joseph W. Musser, the man some refer to as “the Father of the Fundamentalist Mormon movement.”In our interview we covered the tumultuous period in LDS history in which the practice of polygamy, aka the new and everlasting covenant of marriage, was being phased out under the direction of President Heber J. Grant. We'll talk about the stigmas, loyalty oaths, and excommunications that helped forge what Cristina Rosetti calls “a new Mormon identity.”
In light of a recent Twitter op-ed, we invite Dr. Cristina Rosetti onto the show to discuss a polygamist group in Utah (the Kingston Group) who’ve recently contributed to political campaigns, shot rifles with POTUS’s son, and opposed the decriminalization of polygamy which recently passed the Utah legislature. Rosetti helps us navigate the tumultuous waters of Mormon polygamy and discusses the recently-passed bill. Then we jump into our next installment of The Naked Communist before wrapping with some happy news about the recent Presidential Election. Cristina Rosetti is a Roman Catholic woman and scholar who is interested in Mormon Fundamentalism. She joins me to discuss her own religious and spiritual path. Oddly her inquiry into Mormon Fundamentalism comes out of an interest in how certainty shapes and creates religious identities. Her scholarship in Mormonism was initially a way of helping her understand the relationship between faith and doubt, certainty and uncertainty But, her questions of faith drew her into the world Mormon Fundamentalism and the way in which Mormonism has unfolded as highly schismatic and overly concerned with truth claims and authority.

In Christian homes around the world this holiday season, families have dusted off their Nativity sets and carefully arranged the pieces in their living rooms. There are wise men, shepherds, barnyard animals, Joseph, perhaps an angel, all paying homage to the baby Jesus. But what about one woman in every Nativity: Mary. Where does the mother of the Lord fit in Latter-day Saint theology and the wider Christian world? Cristina Rosetti, a doctoral candidate in religious studies at the University of California Riverside and an expert on the intersection of Mormonism and spirit communication, examines that question and more. A convert to Catholicism, Rosetti, who is a also an archivist at Sunstone and a former Mormon studies fellow at the University of Utah, explains the prominent role Mary plays in Catholic worship and her more-subdued part in Latter-day Saint teachings, along with the doctrine of Heavenly Mother and how together they affect women’s places in the world of faith.

Just two weeks ago, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released the first volume of its long-awaited history of the church series, Saints: The Standard of Truth. Written in the form of an engaging narrative, this book covers events in church history beginning in 1815 and concluding in 1846 as the Saints were forced out of Nauvoo and headed to Iowa to prepare to embark the next year on their westward migration. The book includes like nothing before in official church history many stories about women—of their heroism, brilliant minds, and spiritual depth—who contributed mightily to the establishment and survival of the early church. It introduces many stories of immigrants and black Latter-day Saints, and their faith and successes in helping build and shape the Restoration. This new official church history volume is also especially notable for how it includes many details (often viewed as difficult and faith-dampening) about persons and events that are likely unknown to most Latter-day Saints. These include: an unprecedented-in-church-curricula amount of forthright attention to Joseph Smith's involvement in treasure seeking, an expanded First Vision depiction that is woven together and harmonized from Joseph's four first-hand accounts of what he experienced in the grove; a story of the translation of the Book of Mormon that includes his use of a seer stone and a hat in bringing it forth; the failures of the Kirtland Safety Society and Zion's Camp (referred to in the volume as the Camp of Israel); Joseph's own personal engagement in polygamous marriages; the Saints' own sometimes aggressive behavior that fueled escalations of violence against them; questionable decisions regarding calling certain individuals to high positions within the church, as well as choosing to destroy the press that printed the Nauvoo Expositor, which led quite directly to Joseph's and Hyrum's martyrdom. We are thrilled and blessed to have the voices and perspectives of brilliant panelists in this two-part episode. They are the wonderful Megan Burnside, David E. MacKay, Brittney Hartley, and Cristina Rosetti. In Part 1 (Episode 508), they focus on the project itself and the approach to its history the church has chosen to take, their sense of the project's contributions along with areas in which it falls short, and their takes on what seem to be the church's primary goals in creating this series and how successful they think they will be met through an effort such as this. In Part 2 (Episode 509), they focus in on specific stories in the volumes and the choices that were made regarding what to leave in, what to leave out, why the church might have chosen to emphasize the reading of historical documents the way they did, over and against other options (some fairly well known but passed over here in favor of others). In every instance and comment, the tremendous intellects and good, good hearts of each panelist shine brightly. Please listen and enjoy!
