On this episode we finish our decoding of the song Poetic Justice from episode 4.1 ... We talk about the 2013 BET Cypher, Kendrick Lamar's verse on the song Control, and the follow up album to Good Kid Maad City, To Pimp A Butterfly. We also speak on how I see it all tying into that one moment where Kendrick got Drake to diss himself on Poetic Justice. Finally, it's truly amazing how Kendrick was speaking on things just 5 short years ago that are so relevant to what is going on today. Our dialogue about music, ended up turning into an incredibly deep conversation about the world today. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
There has been a ton of scandals surrounding Vic Mensa's name and his BET cipher. Drama aside, you guys have been requesting this video for years. Vic Mensa has a pretty remarkable come-up story – he grew up with another famous rapper, got his start in a rock band and in his teens, he nearly died twice. There are plenty of reasons why he's become a voice for social justice as he runs his own nonprofit foundation. This is his Before They Were Famous.

This week we gave our thoughts on Kanye's most recent white house visit (3:47) and briefly touched on voter suppression in Georgia. Vic Mensa supposedly dissed XXXTentacion in his BET Cypher verse (18:06) and Quavo talks about smashing Nicki Minaj on Huncho Dreams (24:43). Hurricane Michael did some damage to us down here in Florida, but are we cool with Will Smith being Genie in the new Aladdin movie? I do not agree with Vic Mensa's approach to addressing abuse. I think he had other motives when he wrote his verse. X was not perfect. There were terrible events that transpired with his girlfriend at the time. where there is smoke there tends to be fire. But here is the other side: When do people pay for the mistakes? Even in death do they owe something? I notice that a lot of people use somebody's tragedy for marketing reasons. I am typing about him aren't I. Vic could have taken the shock value out of this. If your message is strong enough it can stand without example or finger pointing. The dude got killed. He got shot. What more do you want? Chris Brown is still selling records, Dr. Dre was notorious for domestic abuse. We have forgiven these figures. They were young. People tend to mature and grow with time. X died at the age of 20. The people on the outside of his personal life never had the chance to see him evolve as a person. The reality is that hip hop is full hypocrisy. How many rappers have been accused of domestic abuse? Quite a bit. Fabolous was outed this year for his abusive behavior. He is still alive and can learn his lesson and change. Bringing up X seems immature because he is not here to discuss the problems of his past. It seems like an attention grab because since his passing X has had a impact on the culture. It's a thoughtless process to profit off of someone else's misery. Did his ex who he allegedly abused ask Vic to do this? Was Vic trying to discuss domestic violence? I do not know. This industry is so jaded I cannot help but crack a grin. I do not stand by abuse of any kind. It is disgusting and petty. Its perplexing. When does forgiveness come into light. I don't have the answers. Maybe you do? Drop a comment. What is your opinion on Vic's verse..#xxxtentacion #vicmensa #betawards #domesticviolence #restinpeace
