If you've been feeling the pull to homeschooling and don't know where to start, or if you're surrounded by charter school pressures and feel like you've lost your academic (and moral) freedoms, don't miss this interview! In every state across America, parents have the freedom to educate your children independently--without a yoke to a woke government agenda. Angela Lasch is the director of CHEA, Christian Home Educators Association of California, where she leads a team of parent educators who know what its like to homeschool in our state and want to help YOU succeed! CHEA is the flagship organization for homeschool support in California, and it has been our family's go-to for almost 20 years! (If you live outside CA, tune in to see where you can go for Christian support in your state). Join me for today's interview to learn more about CHEA's upcoming conference, support networks, free resources, and 24/7 homeschool support, including a free hotline service you can call for encouragement, answers, or prayer support. Parents, homeschooling works. You can do this; we can help. Pastors, you can rescue your congregation from pagan indoctrination by becoming part of the solution. Go to AcademicRescueMission.com and learn how to open your church building during the week to support homeschooling families. Let's shift the culture of education for the next generation.  #homeschoolingworks #CHEAofCA #CVCU #ChulaVistaU #HomeschoolCalifornia #CHEAcon2025 #AcademicRescueMission #BeTheChange

There is a lot of talk about the need for diversity, but what does diversity actually mean? In this conversation Rathana Chea shares how he has learnt how to value the power of difference and connection across his time in making social change, sharing insights from social movements while he was in school, to community organising, to working with Greenpeace International and now working to create the Multicultural Leadership Initiative as part of the Australian climate movement. This conversation cuts through the platitudes that often dominate “diversity talk”, responding to the language of awkward politeness with a practice of kindness and clarity about how to create space where people of colour can lead and thrive because they are driving movements that speak to their own needs and interests. For more on the Multicultural Leadership Initiative see HERE.You can follow Rathana on LinkedIn HERE.You can find more about Rathana at his website HERE.For more on ChangeMakers check us out:Via our Website - https://changemakerspodcast.orgOn Facebook, Instagram, Threads - https://www.facebook.com/ChangeMakersPodcast/On X/Twitter - @changemakers99 or @amandatattsOn LInkedIn - Amanda.TattersallChangeMakers 2024 is supported by the Civic Power Fund and work with the UCL Policy Lab. Last week, maybe a week ago, maybe 82 years ago, who knows, we talked about alternative plot structures. Much of American film and novels is built on what's considered to be the classic three-act structure, which basically goes beginning-middle-end, and there's this rising line of the plot. It ends up looking like a bit of a triangle. As readers, we can sort of anticipate and feel that structure happening. In a rom-com, we almost always know how far into the book or movie it will be when the couple breaks up and then someone has to chase down a car or airplane or something so they can get back together. There's a lovely familiarity in that, but us writers don't always want a lovely familiarity with beats in all the prescribed places and a structure that looks like a triangle. In an earlier podcast, Shaun, was asking me about the different structures and plots. And this is a pretty big question that people write entire books about, but I'm going to start here. First, a structure is sort of the diagram of rising and falling and action that links all of the plot points together The plot is something that connects the moments of the novel in a way that gives a novel its meaning. . Janet Burroway defines plot as a “series of events deliberately arranged so as to reveal their dramatic, thematic, and emotional significance …. Plot's concern is ‘what, how, and why,' with scenes ordered to highlight cause-and-effect.” Plot, according to Ingrid Sundberg, is about patterns, rhythm, and energy. It's about the movement and feeling your particular arrangement creates. The triangle (often called the Aristotelian story shape) is a visual metaphor for the escalating energy that is meant to come as a result of a classic design arrangement.” This podcast, we're talking about all the different types of plots. Next time? We'll go all structure on you. Here's a list of different possibilities when it comes to plot: • Mini-plot • Daisy chain plot, • Cautionary tale plot • Ensemble plot • Along for the ride plot • Symbolic juxtaposition plot • Repeated event plot • Repeated action plot Explanations of the Possibilities Mini Plot – This is the emotional plot. It's minimalistic. It might even seem like it does not have a plot, but it does. It's just that the cause-and-effect is about emotional evolution and growth. Example: Tender Mercies Daisy Chain Plot - We have no main protagonist, so we have no main goal. A bunch of characters and situations are here and they are linked via cause-and-effect like a physical object. Examples: Thirteen Reasons Why (has a protagonist, but it kind of works). Lethal Passage. Cautionary Tale Plot - Hero? There is no hero! Comfort? There is no comfort! Our main character sucks. And instead the reader is the protagonist. Examples: Jumped by Rita Williams-Garcia. Inexcusable by Chris Lynch. Ensemble Plot - According to Berg, this happens when you have protagonists grouped in the same place and it is “characterized by the interaction of several voices, consciousnesses, or world views, none of which unifies or is superior to the others.” Example: Give a Boy a Gun. Along For The Ride Plot - Ah. Where is our protagonist doing proactive things? Not here. Here we have the secondary character pushing the action and the protagonist is there, zooming along with them. The protagonist has an emotional change anyways, but they aren't Captain Proactive going after their goals. Example: Looking for Alaska – John Green Symbolic Juxtaposition Plot - Why yes, it's the anti-plot, which some people treat like the anti-christ. This book is an existentialist's dream. It's not about the emotion. It's about having an epiphany, an intellectual epiphany. The plot is about ideas and themes and symbols and that connects everything and gives it meaning. The cause and effect? It's really not here. Example: Einstein's Dreams by Lightman. Repeated Events Plot - So, the same event? You see it multiple times but through differing perspectives so that we can see the truth from different characters' points of view. Repeated Action Plot - You know the movie Groundhog Day? This is it. This is where a character keeps doing the same things over and over until they try to get it right. They have a goal. But the sequence of events isn't linear but repeating. Example: Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver DOG TIP FOR LIFE Repeated action plots are the best. Wake up. Snack. Zoomies. Snack. Breakfast. Snack. Pee. Snack. It's okay to life your life as a repeated event. PLACE TO SUBMIT The Peggy Chapman-Andrews First Novel Award Your novel doesn't have to be finished. The HiSET, formerly known as the CHSPE, is a proficiency exam that homeschool graduates in California can take. While it is not mandatory, it can be helpful for homeschool graduates who face discrimination when applying to colleges or state jobs. Recently, an HSLDA member family encountered a problem when trying to register for the HiSET. They received an automated message stating that they needed accredited transcripts from a public school, which was not required by law. HSLDA sent a legal letter citing relevant court cases and the family's homeschool transcripts, resulting in the California Department of Education updating their registration process to include homeschoolers. This outcome is seen as a victory for homeschooling rights in California. HSLDA also shared another example of successfully challenging a requirement for accredited diplomas for phlebotomy licenses. The work of HSLDA, CHEA and Family Protection Ministries in California is crucial in defending homeschooling freedoms. Why do homeschool graduates in California face discrimination when applying to colleges or state jobs? Homeschool graduates in California face discrimination when applying to colleges or state jobs because some institutions may not recognize homeschool diplomas as equivalent to traditional high school diplomas. This can create challenges for homeschool graduates who want to pursue higher education or certain careers. However, taking the HiSET exam can help homeschool graduates demonstrate diploma equivalency and potentially overcome this discrimination.

Accreditation in the U.S. is unique in many ways — one reason why understanding how it works across all the various levels is so important. We spoke with André Foisy, Executive Director for Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Planning Analytics at Excelsior University, regarding his time as a recent CHEA Fellow to get an inside look at how CHEA develops, initiates, and enforces various policies and requirements. Though CHEA is the accreditor of accreditors, institutions are also their members who they serve and support as well. According to André, embracing an anthropological lens to understanding the nuances of accreditation can help educational establishments better understand what accreditation means, how to achieve each standard, and how to best leverage accreditation for positive outcomes.Join us as we discuss:How institutional accreditation is interpreted, negotiated, and leveraged as a vital toolThe importance of Linda Suskie's five dimensions of quality and the influence of these on André's work with signals of qualityThe impact of AALHE on the assessment community

The Whippoorwill Award seeks to highlight voices that juxtapose these voices within a shared narrative of empowerment and place. We discuss how teachers and students may be unaware of the significance of raising these voices in the common marketplace of fiction and nonfiction ideas. We discuss the diversity of voices and how rural identity changes over time. We discuss the importance of ELA teachers using books from a rural source to reflect student experiences through literature. The Whippoorwill Award provides a list of books sensitive to rural experience and how such work might empower students to see themselves as writers. We also discussed ways teachers can refer students to publish their work and be considered for the Whippoorwill Award. While it is an unusually long episode, there are several themes related to diversity of voice, stigma, and raising voices that complement the Whippoorwill Committee's goals. The most important thing is how we can learn from them.” - Vireak Chea “Do something that you really love, not something people tell you to do. Once you do, everything will start falling into place.” - Vireak Chea “We help digitalize the pharmacy SMEs in Cambodia. When you start to become more digitalized, you have less work in the back end and you have more busy work in the front end, which is exactly what you want. Ultimately, that provides better care for the patients.” - Vireak Chea Jeremy Au interviewed Vireak Chea, a pharmacist and the founder of PillTech, a Cambodia-based B2B marketplace for the pharmaceutical industry, and discussed his motivations, experiences, and hopes for the future. He encouraged listeners to pursue their passions and emphasized that mistakes are opportunities for growth. Lastly, the importance of maintaining a work-life balance was highlighted, with the reminder that work will always be there, but family needs care and attention. (We published the video of this talk yesterday and wanted to provide the same talk in our podcast. So, here it is.)But What Can I Do To Change It?“Don't live for them. Live for you.” He answered and leaned over. “Take back what is yours. A person's Song can never get cut away from them. They tricked you into turning away from it. To blind yourselves. Make yourselves numb. But you do not have to be. You can fight. Only this war is inside you.”Among the exquisite beauty of Kay's writing is her ability to touch the truth of your heart, the truth few aim to touch anymore, and make your heart resonate and experience new possibilities for living and loving. We can only grasp as much of what we are being offered as the place we are at on our growth journey allows us to. The further we are on that journey, the more of what is being offered will make sense, and the more profoundly it will affect our beings and lives. The passage with Domano's answer to Kay's question about what she can do to change things is from Chapter 5 of Kay's book Sacred Link, called “Touch The Clay, Touch The Altar.” Sacred Link is all about reawakening the senses because our senses are the secret doorway to awakening to the fullness of our being. In this passage, Kay talks about how, after an intense day of training going late into the night, where Domano and Chea guided her to experience a deep understanding of the profoundly dysfunctional ways people in our modern culture are programmed to live, so much so that she cried herself to sleep.During her conversations the following day with Domano, her adopted Peruvian grandfather and teacher, Kay said: “Oh yeah. The overwhelming amount of control that has been executed upon us through the centuries by manipulating our senses, particularly the sense of touch, was now really sinking in.” And then she asked: “But what can I do to change it?”To which Domano responded:“Don't live for them. Live for you.” He answered and leaned over. “Take back what is yours. A person's Song can never get cut away from them. They tricked you into turning away from it. To blind yourselves. Make yourselves numb. But you do not have to be. You can fight. Only this war is inside you. “The battle here is to find yourself and the path you stand on. It's knowing your own Song and feeling this life inside you and all things; living a life that gives as much as it takes from all the relatives and meet them, know them, share love with them, learn the wonders of the world from them; to meeting with your own species in harmony and giving; being able to respect yourself among the generations. This is dancing the web. This is wanowa ka ta see. It is a choice to walk this beauty or to give up and walk as one of the living dead.”- Sacred Link, Chapter 4 Touch The Clay, Touch The Altar. How do you decide what school option is best for your child? So many options, which to choose?! In this episode Andie & Angie discuss the pros and cons of homeschool and charter homeschool options. Angie was an OG homeschool kid who became a public school mom, and Andie was a public school kid who became a homeschool mom… then charter homeschool mom… then public school mom. It's a long story.  And all that experience makes for a great episode with lots of laughs! Homeschool has changed over the years, and apparently there's also a little bit of a rivalry between homeschool and charter schools. Andie and Angie talk pros and cons share stories, and make it very clear that one school option is not inherently better than another. Parents need to make the decision that's best for each child. Then there's the Bumper Jumper game they created at the CHEA convention. Oh, and it's okay if you're currently wearing a Bumper Jumper since styles from the 90s are coming back…even low rise jeans (which Angie is excited about but Andie has a very different opinion).
