Bob Hicks was one of Atlanta's most popular Bluesmen in the 20s. His gruff voice and 12-string bottleneck style got him a recording contract when a Columbia scout went to a Barbecue where Bob would cook, serve and sing! His ‘Barbecue Blues' and ‘Going Up the Country' were among his hit records and he put down many interpretations of classic Piedmont Blues, Bob's records showed his wide repertoire and distinctive voice, but he is not a well known figure in Blues history

Delta blues found its voice and audience on the airwaves of KFFA's King Biscuit Time, a daily broadcast out of Helena, Arkansas. Bluesmen like Sonny Boy Williamson and Robert Lockwood Jr., who would go on to become legends, interspersed their own songs with advertising jingles. King Biscuit Time, which launched in 1941, gave unprecedented exposure to African American musicians while selling everyday grocery staples like flour and cornmeal. And it's still on the air. Reporter-producer Betsy Shepherd travels to Helena to tell the story for Gravy.

The Blues Foundation Podcast - Season 1: Blues Hall of Fame    We continue the series with the man who brought electricity to the blues, and the blues to the big city, Muddy Waters.  Born McKinley Morganfield in 1913 in Issaquenna, MS, he grew up on the Stovall Plantation just outside of Clarksdale. There, young Muddy fell under the influence and tutelage of the travelling bluesmen that came to perform there. Bluesmen like the great Son House and the king of the delta blues himself, Robert Johnson.  Muddy moved to Chicago in 1943, taking with him his acoustic guitar and repertoire of delta blues songs and riffs. Feeling ignored by the crowds in the busy Chicago clubs, he traded in his acoustic for an electric guitar and the rest was history.    Muddy Waters inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980.

SHOW #326 Michael Frank was entranced by the Blues as a teen and moved to Chicago after college.  There he met many of the Bluesmen living and performing there and began playing harp with Honeyboy Edwards.  He also managed Honeyboy and started Earwig Records in 1978.  I’ll talk with Michael about his journey and the progress of the Blues along the way. John D’Amato struggled with illness as a child, and his sister’s guitar became a constant companion.  By the time he was in his early teens, many were recognizing his talents.  His first album, Ain’t No Big Deal, was widely applauded and earned him stage time with B.B. King and an appearance on Joe Louis Walker’s Hellfire.  John and I will talk about his life and career as we listen to tunes from Born Blue-The Sun Sessions. Ivas John comes out of the Chicagoland area and music came into his life through his dad.  Ivas and his band have become a staple throughout the Midwest and they just released their new album, Good Days A Comin,’  I’ll talk with Ivas about his life and career as we listen to some music. Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne returns to The Couch with his latest release, Jumpin’ and Boppin’, which was released on Friday.  We’ll talk with Kenny about what he has been up to since his last visit and we’ll listen to tunes from the new album.

Couch Kid Joanne Fish comes by to talk about her documentary Mr. Handy's Blues and the Indigogo Campaign which begins tomorrow... Then we speak with Bo & The BluesDrivers, who’s new Self-Titled EP released in May.  The band recorded, mixed and mastered the album inside of one day, and they have been touring venues and festivals since.  I’ll chat with the band and find out more about their journey and where they are heading. Noah Wotherspoon Band took 2nd place at the International Blues Challenge this year and he was named Gibson Guitar Player of The Year. The new album, Mystic Mud just dropped and is already making noise throughout the Blues World. I get to chat with Noah about his life and music and he may even have Rob & Brian along for the ride! Jimmy Wolf is a member of the Turtle Clan Mohawk Tribe from upstate New York and has played on stages with some of the most revered Bluesmen around including Buddy Guy, Jr. Wells, Albert King and Albert Collins. His latest release is a Tribute to Little Johnny Taylor and I will speak with Jimmy about his finding the Blues and his career. Finally, Tad Robinson joins me.  Tad and I were supposed to hook up a few years back, but it never did.  Tonight he will be coming by to talk about his new release, Day Into Night and we will learn more about this talented artist while we explore the music on the album.
