Adam Franklin-Lyons joins Jana Byars to talk about Shortage and Famine in the Late Medieval Crown of Aragon (Penn State Press, 2022). In the late fourteenth century, the medieval Crown of Aragon experienced a series of food crises that created conflict and led to widespread starvation. Adam Franklin-Lyons applies contemporary understandings of complex human disasters, vulnerability, and resilience to explain how these famines occurred and to describe more accurately who suffered and why.  Shortage and Famine in the Late Medieval Crown of Aragon details the social causes and responses to three events of varying magnitude that struck the western Mediterranean: the minor food shortage of 1372, the serious but short-lived crisis of 1384–85, and the major famine of 1374–76, the worst famine of the century in the region. Shifts in military action, international competition, and violent attempts to control trade routes created systemic panic and widespread starvation—which in turn influenced decades of economic policy, social practices, and even the course of geopolitical conflicts, such as the War of the Two Pedros and the papal schism in Italy. Providing new insights into the intersecting factors that led to famine in the fourteenth-century Mediterranean, this deeply researched, convincingly argued book presents tools and models that are broadly applicable to any historical study of vulnerabilities in the human food supply. It will be of interest to scholars of medieval Iberia and the medieval Mediterranean as well as to historians of food and of economics. Learn more about your ad choices. The twin guitar attack by Adam Franklin and Jimmy Hartridge on Swervedriver's 1991 debut Raise is unlike anything else under the shoegaze umbrella. While 80s dream pop was a touchstone for many of their contemporaries, the band from Oxford, England took some American influences like Dinosaur Jr., The Stooges, Sonic Youth, and Hüsker Dü into consideration. Their sound is more aggressive, more visceral, and often more exciting, leaning into the guitar's ability to shift tones quickly without relying on a wall of noise and feedback.   Songs In This Episode: Intro - Raise 12:10 - Sci-Flyer 17:29 - Son of Mustang Ford 25:15 - Feel So Real Outro - Deep Seat   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. On this episode we have a conversation with Adam Franklin of Cobra Canine. We have known Adam for a number of years, probably more years of his life than not, and in some respects we have watched him grow up and become a trainer at the highest level. Adam discusses what he needed to do in order to  get to where he is now. He is frequently faced with the reality that he must excel in all aspects of k9 training simply because the stakes are so high.  Adam has over ten years experience in training Canines to detect explosives, narcotics, tracking, tactical obedience and canine apprehension in real-world situations with eminent or emerging security threats. Adam has worked with and trained over 600 canines. Adam started working for Cobra Canine in 2009 and has worked as a trainer for the U.S military since 2011.Adam comes across as self assured, yet humble at the same time, which are desirable characteristics in this field.
