Fifth podcast in the series on Race and Racism, theme of BoI charity’s event The Academy, held online in late 2020.In this episode we feature the talk: The troubled universalism of ‘The Souls of Black Folk’.‘The Souls of Black Folk’ was published in 1903 by W.E.B. Du Bois, the American sociologist, historian, author and campaigner. Today, identity politics and campaigns such as decolonising the curriculum emphasise racial difference rather than common humanity. At a time when universalism has fallen distinctly out of fashion, what can we learn from revisiting this seminal work from Du Bois?Lecturer: Brendan O’Neill; editor, spiked; writer for The Sun, The Spectator and The Australian; broadcast commentator, Sky News and the BBC; host, The Brendan O’Neill Show podcast.THE ACADEMY ONLINE II: RACE AND RACISMThe Academy II was a half day online event via zoom that took place in November 2020. I first spoke to Brendan in the weeks leading up to the referendum as talkRADIO evening show host back in 2016. I’ve watched him ever since, battling away for the 17.4m who voted Leave. As a Jewish and Israel podcast, I framed our discussion around the hard left and its changing attitude to national self-determination, Israel and the anti-Zionist antisemitism which followed. We also draw the obvious parallels between Brexit and Israel the nation state. We discuss the woke left’s latest cancellation, Julie Burchill, also an outspoken supporter of Israel and the Jewish people. There’s taking the knee, being Irish, buying your council house and civil liberties in the era of Covid. “I didn’t desert the left, the left deserted me!”, explains Spiked’s editor. I can’t thank Brendan enough for this captivating and hugely popular episode.
This time on "So What You're Saying Is....", Peter Whittle is joined once again by Brendan O'Neill, editor of Spiked Online and a columnist for various national and international publications. A lockdown sceptic, Brendan believes the tier system is horrendously damaging. He also finds the phrase "the new normal" unbelievably scary, believing it should worry us all. When people assume almost total control of our lives to the extent that they tell us when we can leave our house, who we can hug at Christmas, when we can travel and go to work, when we can go to pubs and restaurants and what we must eat whilst we are there, they are not just going to relinquish that. There are a lot of people who like telling people what to do, and they've had a real taste for authoritarianism over the past year and it will be a really big wrestle to take back our freedom from those that took them away. Covid & Class: The attacks on pubs in particular reeks of classism, Brendan O'Neill argues. But also during lockdown those who were comfortable probably had a pleasant experience, living in their larger homes, with their secure jobs and the ability to order food from companies such as Deliveroo. Meanwhile, for the rest of society life was unbearable. Lockdown revealed an important class divide -- one which was not refelected by the (middle class) media. Brendan also believes that Boris has bottled it on the culture wars. His silence during all of the momentous events of the past few months (Black Lives Matter, statue controversies, legacy of Churchill and the singing of Rule Britannia at The Last Night of the Proms, national institutions auditing their collections based on connections to slavery etc.) should be a major source of concern for everyone. Nevertheless, he thinks the Tories still have time to retain their advantage over Labour because Keir Starmer and Labour are far too woke and out of touch with the Red Wall. --------------- SUBSCRIBE: If you are enjoying the show, please subscribe to our channel on YouTube (click the Subscribe Button underneath the video and then Click on the Bell icon next to it to make sure you Receive All Notifications) AUDIO: If you prefer Audio you can subscribe on itunes or Soundcloud. None of us could have failed to be moved by Meghan’s op-ed for the New York Times in which she shared her miscarriage story. As well as giving us a frank insight into what it feels like to go through a miscarriage, prompting many other people to feel safe in sharing their own stories of loss, Meghan has again came back to the theme that she and Harry often speak about, that of asking people Are You OK? and of genuinely wanting to hear the answer. What Meghan’s article brings home to me, as well as highlighting the issue of miscarriage and making this topic one that can be discussed without guilt or taboo, is her continued willingness to talk openly and unashamedly about things either not talked about or talked about in hushed tones. In an article on the Australian news site SBS journalist Natalie Reilly said of Meghan’s article "that it shared important information not just for women but also for men about emotional effects of grief." This move away from being stoic and away from putting on a brave face, to openly discussing how we how feeling does not come easy for everyone. In an article by Brendan O’Neill the editor or Spiked-online titled ‘Do we really need to know about Meghan’s miscarriage," O’Neill speaks of his discomfort in reading of the intimate details of what Meghan and Harry went through, adding that he felt like a voyeur in reading the piece. What Harry and Meghan and William and Kate have been championing is a movement where it is OK to say how you feel. It is not weak – it is not odd - it is alright to say how you are honestly feeling and not to be judged on that. It is OK to talk openly about emotions and mental health. The more people who talk about these things the more normal they become. Please take a second to rate my show... And check out my blog at www.kindthoughtsformeghanmarkle.com

James and Pete recap all the latest with the US election - including what a Biden administration might be like, is Kamala Harris as far left as people think and how America isn't actually on fire - and the Four Corners MeToo episode making waves across Australia. Heroes and villains this week are Californians, Joel Fitzgibbon, AOC's blacklist and UK Police. Brendan O'Neill, editor of Spiked, joins the show to talk about how the US election was a revolt against the elites and identity politics, and how Boris Johnson's new lockdown is a complete failure. (31:33-1:03:59) At the end, Anne Hathaway is the latest actress to apologise for acting, an MSNBC host ends his four year protest against Trump by wearing a black tie (which "no one noticed") Nevada does not care if you want to know who is President, and holy cow they actually booked Four Seasons Total Landscaping.
Michael is joined by Brendan O’Neill, editor of spiked and host of the Spiked Podcast, who writes that ‘the 70 million people who voted for Trump are revolting against the new elites and that we should listen.’ ‘Mr O’Neill writes, ‘So Joe Biden has won the highest popular vote in the history of the US. At the time of writing, more than 73 million people have voted for him. He has beaten the record set by Barack Obama who was swept to power on that famous wave of ‘HOPE’ and 69.5 million votes in 2008.’ ‘But here’s the thing: so has Donald Trump. Trump might trail Biden in the popular vote of 2020, but he, too, has beaten Obama’s 2008 record. Trump, at the time of writing, has 69.7 million votes. So he has won the second-highest popular vote in the history of the American republic. That is remarkable. Far more remarkable than Biden’s very impressive count.’ ‘Why? For one simple reason. Trump is the man we’re all meant to hate. He has been raged against ceaselessly by the cultural elites for the past four years. Hardly any of the American media backed him in 2020. Globalist institutions loathe him.’ ‘Academia, the media elites, the social-media oligarchies, the celebrity set and other hugely influential sectors have branded him a 21st-century Hitler and insisted that only a “white supremacist” could countenance voting for him. He’s the butt of every sniffy East Coast joke and the target of every fiery street protest. He’s the worst thing to happen to Western politics in decades, we’re told, by clever people, constantly.’ ‘And yet around 70 million Americans voted for him. The second-highest electoral bloc in the history of the US put their cross next to the name of a man who over the past four years has been turned by the political clerisy into the embodiment of evil.’ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Brendan O'Neill, editor of spiked, joins Nick Cater from London to swap notes on cultural and political developments.
Marcus Rashford’s campaign for free meals for vulnerable children during school holidays has received widespread support from both the public and the media, with some describing Rashford as rising from sportsman to statesman, the noble quest of a celebrity footballer taking on the might of the Government. Whether he succeeds remains to be seen but it demonstrates the growing power of the celebrity. Advertisers and charities alike have long understood the power of associating celebrities with a product or a cause. They can guarantee visibility and familiarity and their likeability, attractiveness and success are known to influence the way many think and act regardless of whether the celebrities themselves know much about the cause they are championing. But when it comes to public policy should politicians be held to ransom by the power and influence of celebrities? Shouldn’t it be up to Government how it spends its money not the celebrities who are not accountable for their actions? Yet the relationship between politics and celebrities are becoming increasingly blurred. Celebrities are often asked to endorse political campaigns. In America, the history of politics is populated by celebrities themselves achieving political success from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Ronald Reagan and now Donald Trump to name but a few. Some would argue this has reduced political success to whether you like or dislike a politician not on well-rehearsed political arguments or ideologies. Others would argue that it degrades the moral status of government and is a danger to democracy. So who has the moral authority – the politician or the celebrity? With Paul Cullen, Dr Mark Harvey, Prof Natasha Lindstaedt and Brendan O’Neill. Producer: Amanda Hancox
