This week on Bad at Sports, Duncan MacKenzie and Ryan Peter Miller cruise their way into a murder mansion fever dream with Jake Nickell and Lance Curran, two of the minds behind Threadless—the Chicago-based t-shirt empire that helped invent crowdsourced artwear before we'd marketed terms like “creator economy” or “drop ship.” What begins as a nostalgia trip (setting the stage for how the business developed through DIY screenprinting and forum culture) quickly becomes a deep dive into ethics, art careers, AI disruption, licensing chaos, and why having your work sold in Hot Topic definitely still counts as making it. We unpack: The founding of Threadless on a secret art/code forum Shifting from screen printing to digital on-demand Working with artists, bands, and comic book creators Parody vs. IP theft (and WTF the DMCA is) Building safety and anti-hate moderation into a global platform Why Chicago still rules And why Punch Nazis continues to be a top seller Along the way, we also discuss vending machines, Karl Marx, Cheetos, the Four Seasons Total Landscaping press conference, and what happens when art school turns into a startup. And, importantly, how capitalism can be leveraged using Foucauldian power for artists—rather than for their subjugation. Jake Nickell is the founder of Threadless, and a pioneer in crowdsourced design and artist-first merchandise models. He started Threadless in 2000 while still in art school. Lance Curran is the VIP Accounts Director at Threadless, a longtime champion of artist partnerships, muralist collaborations, and weird comic book projects. He joined the company in 2005 and once described the warehouse as “the Foot Clan layer from Ninja Turtles.” Names Dropped: Jake Nickell Lance Curran Threadless Tony Moore The Walking Dead Hot Topic Hope for the Day The Trevor Project Redbox Columbia College Chicago Four Seasons Total Landscaping Nathan Fielder Disney Warner Bros. Well, if you're in the United States then you know this year, 2024, is yet another election year. The thing is, even though the presidential election this year guarantees to be a dystopian rematch of the 2020 election and subsequent debauchery including everything from Rudy Guiliani's melting head outside an adult sex toy store and Four Seasons Total Landscaping to another breach of the Capitol Buildings, there's also EVERY SINGLE House of Representatives seat up for grabs as well as a good portion of the senate AND of course your local elections.  That's a shitload of voting so we brought in our favorite Legislative Director, Sarah Spellman, who you might know on Instagram as @senatorspellman, or you might recognize their voice from their appearance on our Pride Month episodes from last year. This year, Sarah is bringing their expertise in elections to us to explain basic civics and how to pick a candidate - and also the best way to connect with your representatives so they know about the issues that really matter to you.

Swan's reporting takes listeners behind closed doors, where President Trump's inner circle and a group of conspiracy theorists clashed over how best to advise the President.  Note: This episode contains some explicit language. Automobiles played an oversized role in the news this year, from the country's response to the pandemic to the strange twists and turns of the presidential election. In fact, some might say 2020 was the year of the car. Beyond the growth of drive-thru COVID testing and importance of curbside voting, there was the president's weird virus-infected limousine ride around Walter Reed, flag-flying “Trump Trains” shutting down highways and the strange spectacle of watching President-elect Joe Biden deliver his victory speech before supporters in parked cars who expressed their excitement and enthusiasm by honking. What does it mean for the future of democracy that most of our interactions with our fellow citizens now happen from behind a windshield? Are we destined to duke it out, road-rage style, until society collapses? Or is there an off-ramp from all this madness? Plus, is there really a parking angle to the Four Seasons Total Landscaping story? You bet there is. (00:01:58) Politics - Following the Biden/Harris electoral victory, the guys discuss the 70 million Trump voters, where things went wrong for the campaign, how some Republicans have apparently lost their minds in supporting Trumps claims of voter fraud, the changing political landscape across the country and their desire to dig into the voter data, news networks cutting away from Trump and his surrogates while spreading false news, the now infamous Four Seasons Total Landscaping press conference, and the continued spread of COVID-19 throughout the White House and Trump's campaign staff.

James and Pete recap all the latest with the US election - including what a Biden administration might be like, is Kamala Harris as far left as people think and how America isn't actually on fire - and the Four Corners MeToo episode making waves across Australia. Heroes and villains this week are Californians, Joel Fitzgibbon, AOC's blacklist and UK Police. Brendan O'Neill, editor of Spiked, joins the show to talk about how the US election was a revolt against the elites and identity politics, and how Boris Johnson's new lockdown is a complete failure. (31:33-1:03:59) At the end, Anne Hathaway is the latest actress to apologise for acting, an MSNBC host ends his four year protest against Trump by wearing a black tie (which "no one noticed") Nevada does not care if you want to know who is President, and holy cow they actually booked Four Seasons Total Landscaping.

Battleground with David Plouffe & Steve Schmidt

In the first episode of "Battleground" since President-elect Biden was projected to win 270 electoral college votes, David and Steve take a moment to reflect on how the election unfolded and what may lie ahead. They discuss the infamous Four Seasons Total Landscaping press conference, the purgatorial interregnum we face until Inauguration Day, the ongoing pandemic, the stakes of the Georgia Senate races, and more. And, in a few weeks, "Battleground" is dedicating an entire episode to answering your questions. PS You're Wrong: A Pop Culture Podcast

This frazzled pop culture roundup is brought to you in part by the US election results. From the Four Seasons Total Landscaping debacle, to word of Blue Ivy's voice work debut, to Johnny Depp's resignation from Fantastic Beasts, it's a miracle we get through any of it. Such a mess, we don't even have time stamps. For Love It or Hate It Matt recommends a cookie (really. He does.) and Shelby wishes she'd avoided Emma.
