This time I'll be talking to Joel Fitzgibbon about his amazing landscape images. Joel is a landscape and motorsport photographer from the central coast of NSW.   His journey started slightly differently to some other photographers, buying a drone before he'd bought his first camera.  Being attuned to the fast pace of motorsport, he found an interest in landscape photography that he used to improve his craft and develop skills he hadn't explored before. We talk about his photography history, how shifting between motorsport and landscape photography has helped him develop his style and how he's dealing with becoming less interested in landscapes.  I hope you enjoy the show!   You can find Joel's work here: Website:  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/FitzyImages/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FitzyImages/   Theme music: Liturgy Of The Street by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com   #podcast #landscapephotography

The next stop on our election road trip has taken us to the Hunter region in NSW! It's an area that's constantly at the centre of massive national debates on energy, environment, and skills. The seat of Hunter has been held by Labor for more than a century, but things are changing - and the ALP's desperately trying to hang onto it. Can they convince regional voters to stay with them? Plus, in stark contrast to the mining industry in the region, the Hunter's known for its world-class wine industry. We visit a farmer and grape grower in Polkobin to see how these industries co-exist. And we check in with Joel Fitzgibbon, the Labor MP whose retirement is triggering a super tight contest in the area. Live guests: Steve Fordham, Kamilaroi man and mining business owner Alisdair Tulloch, farmer and grape-grower Joel Fitzgibbon, former Member for Hunter

We have a lot to say about submarines. Also, shutting down public transport to stop a protest: Sensible tactic to calm things down or bad idea that'll just make things worse? If only I were writing this several days in the future and could see what would happen on Monday and Tuesday.   Three large sons Australia has entered a new military pact with the US & UK to build a couple of new submarines. It's pronounced “Orcus”. We wasted billions of dollars on the Collins class Submarines. No one remembers Scott Morrison's name. Scott Morrison called French President Macron the night before the contract was announced. They're pissed now. France is a major provider of military contracts in Australia. Nationals MP Matt Canavan is already trying to pivot this into a push for nuclear power. The move has also pissed off Indonesia, who canceled a planned visit between President Widodo and Scott Morrison. Australia's very clever defense policy. Greens leader Adam Bandt called the submarines “floating Chernobyls”. Correction: Lang states that Matt Damon was in Pearl Harbor. This is a common mistake; he was thinking of Jon Voight. Top of the cops Police shut down Melbourne's public transport to put a damper on anti-lockdown protests. The protests still happened. Construction workers also protested the shutting down of tea rooms. The University sector has lost 40,000 jobs since the pandemic started. Shoutouts Shoutouts to Joel Fitzgibbon, who is not recontesting the next election in Hunter, but has been highly effective at saying the quiet part loud.

Despite this week's strong economic figures, the pandemic is not as distant in the rearview mirror as many had hoped it would be by now.  In Victoria, cluster outbreaks have forced the state into a new lockdown. With cases amongst aged care workers and residents, the state waits nervously as health authorities battle to contain the situation. As Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing, Mark Butler is focused on scrutinising the federal government's handling of pandemic and the aged care sector, and what more should be done.  "The problem is distribution[...] We need to ramp up the aged care vaccination and disability care vaccination. And that just means the Commonwealth needing to engage more teams to do the job. "They're doing that in Melbourne right now. But still, we have hundreds and hundreds of aged care facilities that haven't yet received their second dose. And 98% of residents in disability care haven't received their second dose. These are priority groups. So that is what the Commonwealth should be doing as a matter of urgency." Butler is a former national president of the Labor party and sits on its national executive. This week, rebel backbencher Joel Fitzgibbon called for Labor to scrap the rank and file component in selecting its leader. Currently the Labor leader is elected on a 50-50 basis between the caucus and party membership. Butler firmly rejects the Fitzgibbon call for change.  Indeed, he says he's held a "strong view" for "many, many years" that there should be more rank and file decision making in the party - not less. But the complication is that with party membership decreasing, membership decisions skew a certain way. "There is an obligation. You can't rely upon a shrinking group of party members[...]but what I do know is that it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy if we continue to disrespect our members and just expect them to roll up to polling booths every election day and not really do much else."

Australia will likely begin a “slow methodical and safe opening” of its international borders in the first half of 2022, Nick Coatsworth says. His comments come as a new opinion poll shows an overwhelming majority of people are supportive of the international border remaining closed.Prime Minister Scott Morrison is facing renewed calls for the border to reopen from business leaders and MPs after assumptions in last week's federal budget revealed the border would not lift until mid-2022.Dr Coatsworth, the nation's former deputy chief medical officer, said vaccinations would help Aussies feel more comfortable about the threat of COVID-19.“I think at least the first half of 2022 is when we can start a slow methodical and safe opening up of our international borders,” he told Today.“I think it's completely reasonable for three-quarters of Aussies to not want the borders open right now.“What we have to start a conversation with the community about is what do we do in 2022?“What do we do when the majority of Australians are vaccinated and immune, safe from hospitalisation, safe from death from COVID-19?”Almost three in four voters surveyed in an exclusive Newspoll for The Australian said international borders should remain closed until at least the middle of next year and supported the government's approach.Victorian Liberal MP Katie Allen agreed that Australia should retain its border restrictions for now, saying COVID-19 is still raging overseas.“We are where we are because we have done the right thing, listened to the evidence, and no one thinks we should open now,” Dr Allen told Today.“It doesn't mean we shouldn't start having a conversation about what the future might look like.“But we're in a good position for now and we should stick with it.”Labor backbencher Joel Fitzgibbon said a group of MPs pressuring Mr Morrison to open the border sooner were feeling pressure from voters in their own electorates. But he said Australians were being asked to put their own population at risk to get stranded Aussies home.“We are leaving people there to die, literally,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.“This would not be happening if the government had moved sooner on quarantining and indeed on vaccination.”Former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce told Sunrise the risk of coronavirus running rampant in Australia would cause real political pain for the government.“No one likes a situation where people are locked up or held overseas, but unfortunately, we gotta go with the risks for the people here,” Mr Joyce said.“The alternative is that people come back here and people die. Then there be a real outcry.“People would say that ‘you are responsible for those deaths, you are responsible for my mother or father dying'.”text by Jade Gailberger, NCA NewsWire

Last year, Anthony Albanese was criticised for his lack of cut-through during the COVID crisis, as Labor was sidelined by a hyperactive government. This year, amid ALP leadership speculation and now a shadow ministry reshuffle, Albanese is seeking to assert himself more forcefully, declaring last week “I will be leader of this country after the next election”. With that election possible within the year, the need for Labor to outline its policies, including on climate change and industrial relations, is becoming more pressing. Albanese is still intent on taking his time on climate policy, where international developments are fast-moving, but the IR policy is imminent. This week, the opposition leader joins the podcast to discuss the reshuffle, and his and his party’s goals. “Labor will always stand up for the interests of working people,” he says, and that commitment will be at the heart of its workplace policy. The policy’s “priorities are very much on job security and income security.” “Whether it be people in labour hire companies…working next door to someone but earning less money… whether it be people in the new gig economy who are sometimes working for almost nothing in some cases, whether it be issues of workers who are having to bid against each other.” Albanese says the policy will be in direct contrast to government legislation, drafted last year and now before parliament, which would “cut wages and conditions”. Will the ALP definitely vote against the government’s measures? “We’ve said we will not vote for any legislation that cuts wages or cuts conditions such as penalty rates.”

Labor's Joel Fitzgibbon this week quit the frontbench, ensuring he'll become even more vocal in his campaign to have Labor's climate policy move to the centre and the party give greater attention to the working class part of its constituency.  Fitzgibbon – who was shadow minister for resources – and climate spokesman Mark Butler have been at loggerheads, and in this podcast Fitzgibbon makes it clear he believes Butler should be moved when Albanese has an expected pre-Christmas reshuffle. "I think a refresh in that area would be good ... I think someone without his history, someone who doesn't bring baggage, if you like, to the conversation might be better placed to prosecute Labor's case in the broader electorate." Fitzgibbon was active in Labor's 2013 leadership change back to Kevin Rudd.  He says he supports Albanese's leadership. But asked whether, if it became clear next year Labor was heading to a likely really bad defeat, he would be willing to push for a change, he says: "I think senior people in the party have a responsibility to ensure that the party doesn't go over the proverbial cliff. "And none of us are as big or bigger than the party itself.  "The party has to be the key interest and its capacity to win government, because millions of people are relying upon us to be a government from time to time. And we  owe it to them to be electable." Sounds like a warning.

text by Sam Clench and Charis Chang, news.com.auFormer deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce will challenge Michael McCormack for the leadership of the Nationals Party today. The former Nationals leader received a huge boost after frontbencher and Nationals Minister Matt Canavan sensationally quit Cabinet overnight to support Mr Joyce in today’s spill. In a statement, Mr Canavan said he had offered his resignation because “I have come to the view that we need change in the Nationals Party leadership to effectively fight for regional Australia”.“It is my view that forthright leadership from the Nationals Part is needed more than ever,” he said.Mr Canavan’s shock announcement came just hours after Queensland Nationals MP Llew O’Brien announced he would move a motion to spill the leadership at today’s party room meeting and will back Mr Joyce to become deputy PM again.Mr Joyce confirmed yesterday morning that he would stand if both positions, for the deputy leadership and leadership of the Nationals, were put to a vote.“If there is a spill I will stand. It is entirely up to them if they wish to spill,” Mr Joyce told the ABC.“A spill is a real option but not a certainty.”Mr Joyce appeared on Channel 7’s Sunrise program to remove any doubt about his intentions.“If there is a spill on I will put my hand up,” he said.“Obviously after a spill, there is technically no leader. That is a right in a Westminster system of government. It is up to others if there is a spill.“I believe that I’ve done the job before. Every seat we’ve got is one I’ve won at the previous election. But I’ll leave that up to my colleagues, they can make the call.”“Have you been told that they will make the call for a spill?” host David Koch asked.“Well I’m going to leave that up to them, Kochie,” Mr Joyce said.“No, you must know though. You must have some sort of political stooges in the party who’ve said, ‘Mate, we’re going to call for a spill, are you going to run?’” Koch said.“If they choose to do it, they choose to do it. I never put a certainty on anything. I’ve said every time people have asked me, if there’s a vacancy I will stand. And I’ll leave it up to my colleagues to make a choice of what they wish.”“Yeah but going on national TV the day before a party room meeting like this is pretty clear that you’re putting your hand up,” Koch’s fellow host Natalie Barr pointed out.“Going on national TV on a Monday on Sunrise is what I do every week, and of course it’d be more odd if I all of a sudden didn’t appear,” said Mr Joyce.“But it’s what you’re saying, we’re talking about. You’ve just said that you’ll put your hand up if there’s a spill. You want to be the leader, don’t you?” she pressed.“That’s correct,” he said.Mr Joyce went on to pitch his credentials, saying his previous stint as leader gave the Nationals the highest number of Cabinet ministers in their history and more seats than they’d held in roughly three decades.“We did a whole range of things, and I believe that if people want to investigate whether there’s going to be a chance, now is the time to do it, two years before the next election,” he said. His Sunrise sparring partner, Labor’s Joel Fitzgibbon, described Mr Joyce’s move as a “vote of no confidence” in the leadership of the Nationals.“Barnaby Joyce just told us that the National Party is dysfunctional, and indeed hopeless. My concern is that a dysfunctional government just got a whole lot more dysfunctional.”Mr McCormack himself addressed the issue at a press conference in Canberra.“We want regional Australians to know they are our focus. Not ourselves. Not the Canberra bubble,” he said.“There is no vacancy for the leadership at the moment of the National Party. And I have delivered for regional Australia.”The incumbent defended his record as leader.“I have absolutely made sure that the $100 billion of money that we are spending on infrastructure, that regional Australia has received its fair share,” he said....
