Ed and Wayne talk about England's win over Croatia, in which a wobbly first half was followed by a much stronger second. Tuchel's substitutions, a standout performance from Jude Bellingham, and a Marcus Rashford goal all helped England pick up three points. But is the balance in midfield right and how will heat and humidity impact the team in the coming games? Beyond England, Ed and Wayne have been enjoying the expanded tournament, the performance of smaller nations and new refereeing standards. The revived Messi vs Ronaldo debate gets short shrift though! Then a quick touch on United: players who are performing well in the World Cup, a new Amazon documentary is announced, and there's a new book and podcast series by Wayne. 00:00 England v Croatia, the opener 08:17 Rice, Bellingham and Anderson 16:14 Harry Kane and England's depth 20:19 Messi, Ronaldo and records 25:27 48-team expansion and format 27:27 Refereeing and VAR 34:57 United players at the World Cup 38:33 Transfers and the Amazon documentary 44:32 Wayne's book and podcast If you are interested in supporting the show and accessing a weekly exclusive bonus episode, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts. England finally got their World Cup underway and it was worth the wait as they beat Croatia 4-2 in an entertaining game. Two goals for captain and talisman Harry Kane, one for Bellingham and Rashford and a performance that at times resembled the high intensity Premier League type game that manager Thomas Tuchel has so often talked about. There were issues defensively and Tuchel wasn't happy at half time, but it was a win, an impressive one, and England had a cutting edge.Tom Clarke gets immediate reaction from Matt Lawton who was at the game in Dallas, and is then joined by Gregor Robertson and Alyson RuddIn the second half Tom Allnutt reports from an underwhelming performance by Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal. Following England's opening victory over Croatia, Rio is full of praise for the way Thomas Tuchel set up and managed the team after they scored 4 goals and created many more opportunities. After watching the match in his Airbnb with Joel Beya and Ste Howson - Rio praises the performances of Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford and Elliot Anderson. There were some concerns about the defence who were put under pressure numerous times but Rio explains why John Stones challenge of switching sides as a centre-back is such a difficult one to overcome. Harry Kane joins the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi who all scored at least two goals in their opening fixture which prompts a debate around the effectiveness of Cristiano Ronaldo after he drew a blank for Portugal against DR Congo. According to Rio - England's squad depth could be a hugely decisive factor in their journey through the tournament and suggests only France can compete with the attacking prowess on the bench that Tuchel has at his disposal Hosted on Acast. Marcus Rashford may well have a future at United and his goal against Croatia could be part of a rehabilitation story to reconnect him with his boyhood club. However, United may retain an interest in a West Ham winger to take his place. Meanwhile, a lot of strategic mulling for midfielders with nobody yet to make their formal move and ignite the market. Adam and Jake are in to make sense of a mad few days for THFC, because the defence we have been crying out for is suddenly being built right in front of us. Van Hecke is the big one. Spurs have agreed a deal with Brighton worth around £52m, and he is exactly the ball-playing centre-half De Zerbi has been asking for. Pair him with Marcos Senesi, in for nothing from Bournemouth, and you have two of the best progressive defenders in the league in the same back line. Add Andy Robertson at left-back and the spine looks completely different to the one that limped through last season. So we are asking the obvious one. Is this defence actually finished, or is there another piece to come? That brings us to the Vuskovic question. The lad looks like a proper player, but with Van Hecke and Senesi in, and Van de Ven and Romero still here, where does he fit? We get into whether he goes out again, whether he should, and what Romero's future actually looks like in a side built around defenders who play out from the back. We also get into the forwards and the wingers, because a tidy defence means nothing if we cannot hurt teams at the other end. Savinho is the name everyone is talking about and the noises out of the club are getting louder. We talk through whether he is the right fit, what De Zerbi's attack is supposed to look like, and who else needs to walk through the door before this window is done. And we could not start without the World Cup. England got off the mark with a 4-2 win over Croatia, Harry Kane with two, Bellingham and Rashford on the scoresheet. We give you our take on how Tuchel's lot looked and what it means heading into Ghana next. Get involved. Tell us in the comments whether you think the defence is done, and who you want next. Like, subscribe and turn the bell on for all our Spurs reaction, previews and transfer chat. COYS. Tottenham #Spurs #THFC #COYS #VanHecke #Senesi #DeZerbi #Savinho #TransferNews #WorldCup

#1013 | Ed and Dominic discuss United's deal to sign midfielder Ederson from Atalanta for around £35m plus add-ons. There's been a muted reaction from fans but his standout physicality and counter-pressing should offer something the squad is missing, although concerns about his limited inventiveness in passing are fair. The panel return on this edition to discuss Tottenham Hotspur closing in on the signings of Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, with both deals now agreed in principle as Roberto De Zerbi's rebuild gathers pace in North London. We also reflect on the news that Tottenham Hotspur have ‘pulled out' of the race to sign Joao Palhinha. Spurs' buy option expires on Monday, and Sporting CP are moving ahead with the deal. Talks with Bayern Munich are expected to follow. Palhinha impressed on loan at Spurs and has expressed a desire to stay, with the London club holding a €30 million purchase option. Sporting want to bring the 30-year-old back to Lisbon, where he began his career. The midfielder is willing to take a significant pay cut to rejoin his boyhood club, and a broad understanding with the player is said to be in place. A new loan move for Luka Vuskovic to Hamburger SV is apparently not a current option avaliable. The Croatian has two options: Long-term contract extension with high salary. A move to one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Talks are ongoing over the player's future. Luka Vuskovic has revealed his Tottenham future will not be decided until after the World Cup. We discuss what the best next step is for the youngster. Tottenham Hotspur are expected to strengthen their attack this summer, and a new report suggests that Marcus Rashford could become an option. Spurs have reportedly shown interest in signing Marcus Rashford this summer after a 28-goal contribution season with Barcelona, during which he scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists. We debate whether the Club could entice him into coming to the club and whether Spurs can get the best out of him. Finally we close on the news that Spurs have launched an internal review into last season. An internal review has been ongoing since the appointment of Dan Lewindon as Performance Director from Manchester City. This comes after he found significant challenges within Spurs. He joined the Club one day before Thomas Frank was sacked. We reflect on whether the Club will take the learnings from last season and put them into action in both the upcoming window in addition to decisions made both off/on the pitch.
