United Inc: Bezos, Liverpool and the Transfer Market

#1034 | Ed and Jamie look at Jeff Bezos buying into Liverpool, a deal that values the club at around £5.5 billion for a consortium stake of just under 40%. Why is Bezos getting involved now? Can an Amazon-owned media empire buy into a Premier League club without creating a conflict of interest for future TV rights deals? And how does it compare to United's own ownership structure? On United specifically, spend so far this summer sits at £135 million gross. What does that mean for United's SCR position? And why loaning Marcus Rashford out doesn't actually help United's finances despite the noise around it. The second half of the pod covers the wider transfer market: Tottenham's spending after two bottom-third finishes, Chelsea's need to sell under their settlement agreement, and a longer discussion of whether the squad cost ratio is fair on clubs like Newcastle and Villa. The answer, broadly, is that it isn't as unfair as often claimed. 0:00 Intro0:48 Season openers and fantasy football2:13 Bezos Liverpool consortium10:16 Amazon, media rights and conflicts of interest16:16 United's transfer spend and SCR position22:31 Rashford's future27:35 Big-six spending across the league29:04 Spurs, swap deals and dodgy transfers33:10 Chelsea's settlement agreement and sales37:32 Aston Villa's player trading39:54 Is SCR anti-competitive?45:51 Salary caps and the owner-funding 47:15 Ownership exits: Chelsea, Clearlake, FSG49:34 EFL losses and the Premier League deal55:21 Ticket prices and the pyramid56:22 Wrap-up If you are interested in supporting the show and accessing a weekly exclusive bonus episode, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts. #1033 | Ed and Wayne react to United's 2-0 opening-day defeat at Hull. United's poor performance breaks down into three causes: a tactical selection that didn't suit the game, a fitness gap after a staggered pre-season, and basic failure to finish chances or clear the two set pieces Hull scored from. Then there are the players. Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw remain trusted by Carrick but is their time in the team now coming to a natural end? A wider structural problem persists too; every forward likes to tuck inside, leaving nobody offering width except from full-back, which is a problem too. Then there's the tendency, called out by Bruno Fernandes, for United to play vertically when Carrick is building a side for possession. Marcus Rashford, who set up United's best chance off the bench, gets a long section of debate. The Tactics Show: Season Preview

#1032 | Ed and Dharnish preview the season with a focus on how United's tactics are evolving under Michael Carrick. The pattern in pre-season has been more possession, more central possession, and an emphasis on third-man runs.  Where Carlos Baleba fits is still unclear: he's more carrier than passer, so the assumption is someone else, Kobbie Mainoo or Youri Tielemans, drops in to start moves while Baleba operates further forward.  The bigger worry is pressing. Pushing fullbacks and forwards higher creates gaps between midfield and defence, and neither Bruno Fernandes nor Marcus Rashford presses well enough to close them, though Baleba's mobility should help cover the space.  Up front, the squad is deep enough that losing Benjamin Sesko to injury or rotation shouldn't be a big problem, with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and a returning Rashford all able to play through the middle. 0:00 Introduction and season preview

Surprise! United Revive Baleba Deal

#1031 | Ed and Adam talk about United's move for Carlos Baleba, a deal likely to land in excess of £65 million. It's the right profile for United, even if Baleba's poor season last year presents a risk. He's a front-foot, ground-covering midfielder that should combine well with United's other midfielders and solve some specific problems. The deal takes United's spend on midfielders this summer to around £150 million across Tielemans, Santos and Baleba. It's a strong midfield rebuild even if United are still a bit short elsewhere. Left-back remains the outstanding piece of business before the window closes.  The pod closes with a preview of Hull away this weekend as United look for a strong start to the new season. 0:00 Introduction 1:42 Baleba: role and player profile 6:19 Midfield pairings 11:10 Pressing, transitions and defensive cover 12:55 Left-back hunt 15:04 Deal timing and transfer strategy 21:54 Rating the midfield rebuild 31:46 Zirkzee and Rashford: squad business 36:07 Hull preview and Championship finances 45:30 Predicted line-up and sign-off If you are interested in supporting the show and accessing a weekly exclusive bonus episode, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Rio Ferdinand sits down with new Manchester United midfielder Youri Tielemans to discuss his surprise move to Old Trafford, his first conversations with Michael Carrick and why joining United was an opportunity he couldn't turn down.Tielemans reveals what Carrick told him about his role, why the United boss sees similarities between them and how he wants Tielemans to control the tempo, take responsibility in possession and how he can help connect United's defence with their attacking players. The Belgium captain gives his early assessment of his new midfield partners, discussing what Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Andrey Santos can each bring to the team. He explains why Bruno is a "nightmare" to play against, where Mainoo can still improve and why Santos could give United's midfield the security to attack with more freedom.Tielemans also reveals some of the early details he's picked up inside the United squad - including which player was first to message him after his move, the funniest player on the training pitch and why he's been pleasantly surprised with the ego and ‘edge' within the leadership group of senior players. He opens up on playing alongside Marcus Rashford at Aston Villa and why the player he saw every day was completely different to the public perception around him, praising his commitment, attitude and the qualities he can bring back to United.Youri also reflects on becoming a Champions League player at just 16, the advice he'd give JJ Gabriel aged 15 and what he learned under Unai Emery at Aston Villa.Plus, Tielemans builds his ultimate five-a-side team from the players he's shared a pitch with, featuring Vincent Kompany, Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku and Jamie Vardy – revealing what made Hazard unlike anyone he'd ever played with and why Lukaku doesn't get the respect he deserves. On this week's episode of the Peter Crouch Podcast, Pete, Sids, and Chris are back in person and getting stuck into one of the best parts of pre-season… making wildly confident predictions that will definitely come back to haunt them by May.The lads run through their 26/27 season predictions, including who they think will lift the Premier League trophy, who makes the top four, who takes the Golden Boot, Golden Glove, which big-money signing could flop, and which players are set for a breakout season. There are some big calls too, with Arsenal backed by some of the lads, Manchester United tipped as genuine title challengers, and Liverpool surprisingly left out of one predicted top four.We also get into the summer transfer madness, including Morgan Rogers' huge £117m move to Chelsea, Elliot Anderson's £116m switch, West Ham's retention of Jarrod Bowen and Spurs bringing in Sandro Tonali. The lads debate whether £100m has effectively become the new normal in football, and why the modern game seems to be producing fewer kids who actually want to grow up and be strikers.Elsewhere, we discuss West Ham's decision to permanently ban half-and-half scarves, discover a bizarre half-and-half calf tattoo, and hear about the legendary Zante goalkeeper who lets holidaymakers take penalties against him for a euro.Oh, and there's a Peter Crouch tune. It was another flat England performance, with Kobbie Mainoo still yet to see any minutes and Marcus Rashford frustrating. And while we're talking about Rashford, where does his future lie? The episode ends with talk of United's new stadium master plan, land purchases, and potential redesign away from the tent. 00:00 Intro and World Cup Catch-up 02:53 United's Midfield Transfer Freakout 14:22 United's Search for Midfielders 22:53 England's World Cup Performance 31:07 Marcus Rashford Future 33:39 England vs Mexico Preview 40:57 New Old Trafford Stadium Plans 48:13 Wrap Up If you are interested in supporting the show and accessing a weekly exclusive bonus episode, check out our Patreon page or subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Rio is joined at his Airbnb by Joel Beya and Ste Howson after a hectic few days where the trio went on a horse riding experience, welcomed Spain, Barcelona, Liverpool an Bayern Munich legend Thiago to the villa and watched England set up a huge knockout tie with Congo. Rio does a deep dive on the way Thomas Tuchel is utilising the attributes of Marcus Rashford and compares his view on Rashford's performance with those using statistics to criticise him. There's been a lot of discussion about the selection of Jordan Henderson in Thomas Tuchel's squad. After hosting Henderson's former teammate Thiago at the villa, Rio reveals why his inclusion is so important for Tuchel and the other members of the team. As the tournament starts hotting up with the knockout rounds, Rio discusses why this current French side remind him of Brazil in 2002 and how the switch from group stage games to knockout matches affect players' mentalities. The trio review their Airbnb experience of horse riding through the Malibu hills and laugh at Joel's unusual tactics of settling his horse down and tease the fact that another guest is coming to stay with Rio at the villa.Brought to you in partnership with Airbnb Hosted on Acast. Ed and Wayne talk about England's win over Croatia, in which a wobbly first half was followed by a much stronger second. Following England's opening victory over Croatia, Rio is full of praise for the way Thomas Tuchel set up and managed the team after they scored 4 goals and created many more opportunities. After watching the match in his Airbnb with Joel Beya and Ste Howson - Rio praises the performances of Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford and Elliot Anderson. There were some concerns about the defence who were put under pressure numerous times but Rio explains why John Stones challenge of switching sides as a centre-back is such a difficult one to overcome. Harry Kane joins the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi who all scored at least two goals in their opening fixture which prompts a debate around the effectiveness of Cristiano Ronaldo after he drew a blank for Portugal against DR Congo. According to Rio - England's squad depth could be a hugely decisive factor in their journey through the tournament and suggests only France can compete with the attacking prowess on the bench that Tuchel has at his disposal Hosted on Acast. #1013 | Ed and Dominic discuss United's deal to sign midfielder Ederson from Atalanta for around £35m plus add-ons. There's been a muted reaction from fans but his standout physicality and counter-pressing should offer something the squad is missing, although concerns about his limited inventiveness in passing are fair. The panel return on this edition to discuss Tottenham Hotspur closing in on the signings of Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, with both deals now agreed in principle as Roberto De Zerbi's rebuild gathers pace in North London. We also reflect on the news that Tottenham Hotspur have ‘pulled out' of the race to sign Joao Palhinha. Spurs' buy option expires on Monday, and Sporting CP are moving ahead with the deal. Talks with Bayern Munich are expected to follow. Palhinha impressed on loan at Spurs and has expressed a desire to stay, with the London club holding a €30 million purchase option. Sporting want to bring the 30-year-old back to Lisbon, where he began his career. The midfielder is willing to take a significant pay cut to rejoin his boyhood club, and a broad understanding with the player is said to be in place. A new loan move for Luka Vuskovic to Hamburger SV is apparently not a current option avaliable. The Croatian has two options: Long-term contract extension with high salary. A move to one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Talks are ongoing over the player's future. Luka Vuskovic has revealed his Tottenham future will not be decided until after the World Cup. We discuss what the best next step is for the youngster. Tottenham Hotspur are expected to strengthen their attack this summer, and a new report suggests that Marcus Rashford could become an option. Spurs have reportedly shown interest in signing Marcus Rashford this summer after a 28-goal contribution season with Barcelona, during which he scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists. We debate whether the Club could entice him into coming to the club and whether Spurs can get the best out of him. Finally we close on the news that Spurs have launched an internal review into last season. An internal review has been ongoing since the appointment of Dan Lewindon as Performance Director from Manchester City. This comes after he found significant challenges within Spurs. He joined the Club one day before Thomas Frank was sacked. We reflect on whether the Club will take the learnings from last season and put them into action in both the upcoming window in addition to decisions made both off/on the pitch.
