Today, we're joined by one of our favorite writers and thinkers, Vinson Cunningham, to discuss his excellent debut novel, Great Expectations, which tells the story of brilliant-but-unmoored young black man, David Hammond, who finds himself recruited — by fluke, folly, or fate — onto a historic presidential campaign for a certain charismatic Illinois senator. A staff writer at the New Yorker, Vinson also worked for Obama's 2008 campaign in his early twenties. (He bears at least some resemblance to his protagonist.) And his novel provides a wonderful jumping-off point for a deep discussion of political theater, the novel of ideas, race, faith,  the meaning of Barack Obama, and the meaning of Kamala Harris. Also discussed: Christopher Isherwood, Saul Bellow, Garry Wills, Ralph Ellison, Marilynne Robinson, Paul Pierce, and Kobe Bryant! Those who listen to "The Glenn Show" will know that Professor Glenn Loury has published an extraordinary autobiography.  Late Admissions: Confessions of a Black Conservative breathes the spirit of candor, intellectual openness, and personal humility that has characterized his life and work. Professor Loury is a Paulson Fellow at the Manhattan Institute, which hails his new book as “a shockingly frank memoir from a prize-winning economist, reflecting on his remarkable personal odyssey and his changing positions on identity, race, and belief.” In the words of Professor Loury's life-long friend John McWhorter, it is also a “page-turner.” ACTA President Michael Poliakoff and ACTA board member Paul Levy sat down with Professor Loury for a conversation about his illuminating new book. The three spoke about race, conservatism, and the remarkable intellectual journey that the author and scholar has taken over the course of his life and career, in all its complexity, human fallibility, courage, and perseverance.

Not everyone realizes that the modern financial system has enabled us to end historical practices such as indentured servitude and apprenticeship.  This episode uncovers how financial systems tackled market failures and transaction costs, drawing on insights from Jeffrey Hodgson's "The Wealth of a Nation: Institutional Foundations of English Capitalism." We'll explore the evolution of borrowing against future earnings and how modern financial institutions have streamlined processes that once resembled slavery, fostering the growth of capitalism. We'll then shift gears to examine Glenn Lowry's groundbreaking views on educational investment, discussed in his book "Late Admissions" and echoed in his 1981 Econometrica paper. Lowry's exploration of intergenerational transfers and parental investments in education reveals significant inefficiencies in the current system, drawing parallels with Michael Hudson's analysis of financial markets. The conversation sheds light on the untapped potential of underprivileged children and the need for better financial instruments to optimize educational funding.Geoffrey Hodgson. This week's guest is economist and public intellectual Glenn Loury. Glenn is almost certainly no stranger to Unspeakable listeners, many of whom know him from his long-running podcast The Glenn Show. In addition to opining there about political and social issues, Glenn is a fellow at the Manhattan Institute and the Merton P. Stoltz Professor of the Social Sciences and Professor of Economics at Brown University, where he has taught since 2005. He grew up on the south side of Chicago and eventually became the first black professor of economics at Harvard and a prominent conservative thinker and policy expert. The Glenn Show debuted in 2012, and Glenn's conversations about race with linguist and cultural critic John McWhorter were foundational to the emergence of the independent media sphere sometimes called the “heterodoxy” (at least they were Meghan's gateway drug). Glenn has published numerous books, but his latest, a memoir, is a major departure. Late Admissions: Confessions of A Black Conservative is not just an account of his professional trajectory but also an unflinching interrogation of his personal choices. This interview is stunningly candid and also utterly delightful. Meghan is grateful to Glenn for his honesty, deep insight, and great humor.
