Our guest today – Jonathan Sumption – sat, until June of this year, as a Non-Permanent Judge of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal. He left that role – "in high dudgeon" – as a critique of the creeping totalitarianism of pro-Beijing influences in the east Asian territory. In this wide-ranging discussion with Nicholas Mostyn, Helena Kennedy and Charlie Falconer, Lord Sumption discusses how he came to that decision and looks at how the remaining British judges ought to handle their continued work in the region. If you have questions, criticisms, praise or other feedback, please do send your thoughts to us via lawanddisorderfeedback@gmail.com!Law and Disorder is a Podot podcast.Executive Producer and Editor: Nick Hilton.Associate Producer: Ewan Cameron.Music by Richard Strauss, arranged and performed by Anthony Willis & Brett Bailey.PR by Sally Jones. Roots go deep in today's show. Come with me to meet fifth-generation farmers, Taylor and Cassandra Sumption, the founders of Anthem Oats. The couple grows and packages premium, gluten-free oats for retail on nearly 400 acres near Frederick, South Dakota, 27 miles north of Aberdeen on US Highway 281, just seven miles south of the North Dakota border, and their packing and offices operation in Frederick.  Taylor's great, great grandpa homesteaded in the area in 1882 so Taylor and Cassandra are keeping the family agriculture business alive in what's now 142 years! They're focused on value-added agriculture and vertical integration to build their legacy-based, farm-to-table company—this means we can count of them for many years of delicious steel cut, old-fashioned, and quick oats and instant oatmeal cups and packets in flavors like vanilla chai, peach and cranberry, dark chocolate brownie, super fruit, pumpkin spice, and my personal favorite, maple pecan.  Learn more about their products and the family at anthem oats dot com. The photos and recipes that Cassandra shared with us for tiramisu-inspired overnight oats, energy balls, and her bacon cheeseburger meatloaf with secret sauce are on randomsweets.com. Triumph and Illusion (Faber & Faber, 2023) is the final volume of Jonathan Sumption's epic history of the Hundred Years War. It tells the story of the collapse of the English dream of conquest from the opening years of the reign of Henry VI, when the battles of Cravant and Verneuil consolidated their control of most of northern France, until the loss of all their continental dominions except Calais thirty years later. This sudden reversal of fortune was a seminal event in the history of the two principal nation-states of western Europe. It brought an end to four centuries of the English dynasty's presence in France, separating two countries whose fortunes had once been closely intertwined. It created a new sense of national identity in both countries. The legacy of these events would influence their divergent fortunes for centuries to come. Behind the clash of arms stood some of the most remarkable personalities of the age: the Duke of Bedford, the English Regent who ruled much of France from Paris and Rouen; Charles VII of France, underrated in both countries, who patiently rebuilt his kingdom after the disasters of his early years; the captains who populate the pages of Shakespeare - Fastolf, Montagu, Talbot, Dunois and, above all, the extraordinary figure of Joan of Arc who changed the course of the war in a few weeks at the age of seventeen. Jonathan, Lord Sumption is the author of the justly acclaimed, five volume history of the Hundred Years' War. "Government control over the flow of information": Lord Sumption speaks out against the threat to freedom of speech posed by the Online Safety Bill. With the conclusion of the inquest into the death of the teenager Molly Russell, attention has turned again to the Online Safety Bill, currently making its way through the House of Commons. The Bill's concept of “legal but harmful” user-generated content is controversial, and has attracted criticism from high places, not least of all from former Supreme Court judge Jonathan Sumption. Lord Sumption joins Rosalind English in this episode to discuss the problems involved in defining this kind of harm and the concepts of “misinformation and disinformation” in the Bill. Chris Moon had his first paranormal experience at the age of seven. Daily occurrences from that time on included objects disappearing and reappearing; doors opening and closing on their own fruition, strange shadows and light anomalies, and nightly haunted sonnets on the family's one hundred year old grand piano. He also discovered that he had a definite psychic/medium sense, and began traveling on his life journey doing remedial paranormal investigations at a mere 13 years of age. A musician by trade, Chris spent many years playing in and touring with Rock and Metal bands. Eventually his interest in the paranormal overtook his passion for music, and Chris chose to become a full-time professional investigator. Wanting the paranormal community and general public to become aware of what he had known for years, that the paranormal existed and could be documented, he partnered with his father, a devout skeptic, in developing a magazine that would represent a truly balanced view of the subject. Consequently, Haunted Times Magazine was born in 2004, and was considered the largest and best paranormal magazine in the world, as voted by the International Paranormal Acknowledgement Committee. While searching for magazine staff in 2003, Chris was contacted by an engineer by trade, Frank Sumption, who claimed to have a device that allowed two-way audio communication with spirits. Skeptical, Chris met with Mr. Sumption at his workshop for a demonstration. Chris was astounded to find that the device that Frank Sumption had built was actually designed through the E.V.P. (Electronic Voice Phenomena) of deceased scientists. It quickly became obvious to Chris what Frank Sumption had done; he had completed the infamous Thomas Edison Telephone to the Dead. Frank graciously offered to give Chris one of the machines to use in the field. He accepted, and first used the device while investigating the famous Sallie House in Atchison, Kansas. The machine worked flawlessly, and Chris and his team collected real time E.V.P. evidence directly from the spirits in the house. Chris refers to this device at the Spirit Telephone. It is also referred to as The Telephone to the Dead, and most commonly, Frank's Box. No matter what the name, the device has become an invaluable tool in Chris's paranormal research.

But then Covid happened.Over the past year, his unabashed criticism of lockdown policies has turned him into something of a renegade. It is a development that mystifies him; as he sees it, his views have always been mainstream liberal, and it is the world around that has changed. In the course of our conversation, the retired judge doesn't hold back. Few have opposed the Government’s handling of the pandemic with as much eloquence and authority as Lord Sumption. The former supreme court judge, medieval historian and Reith lecturer doesn’t just dispute the scientific evidence, he questions the legal and constitutional justification for these restrictions on our liberty. He’s claimed that the Government has a habit of deliberately avoiding parliamentary scrutiny and is using fear as an instrument of coercion. That, he says, is how democracy dies.As England was put back under stay-at-home-orders he spoke to CapX about the ethics and efficacy of lockdown. Chris Moon had his first paranormal experience at the age of seven. Daily occurrences from that time on included objects disappearing and reappearing; doors opening and closing on their own fruition, strange shadows and light anomalies, and nightly haunted sonnets on the family's one hundred year old grand piano. He also discovered that he had a definite psychic/medium sense, and began traveling on his life journey doing remedial paranormal investigations at a mere 13 years of age.A musician by trade, Chris spent many years playing in and touring with Rock and Metal bands.
