This is a whiparound rambling Wednesday episode that begins with a hat chat: how many is too many? Shane Bacon joins Brendan Porath to discuss this pressing question before getting to one of the great delights of the year: the European Tour's stop at DLF, the first true “so bad it's good” course in this podcast's history. There is some intel from the ground about a potential hardship that has a few caddies grumbling but might be further evidence that Gary Player is one of our great modern architects. Speaking of Gary, they discuss his tweet that the foam roll bunkers could be color coded and changed, one of many benefits according to Mr. Player. There's also a bit about how some are using whiskey in Delhi as a preventive health device. There's also intel from the ground at the Houston Open, where the Tour might be neutering some Tom Doak work with a big backboard. Cutthroat Corner returns and this time a fan favorite is in the crosshairs. They close with news of some TGL return dates and Phil Mickelson's caddie change.

It's Flashback Friday: Fried Egg Edition! With the 2022 PGA Championship next week, Andy Johnson and Brendan Porath join Garrett Morrison to look back Phil Mickelson's victory last year at the Ocean Course. Andy and Brendan were on site at Kiawah Island all week. They reminisce about the lead-up to the event, the excitement around the venue, and the wild Sunday finish, which included a broadcast appearance by Andy himself. The group also reflects on what's transpired for Phil since his win and how the events of the past 12 months have colored their recollections of that historic week.
What should I know before going to the Masters? What are the most underrated and overrated vantage points at Augusta National? How can I best appreciate the course architecture? Should I actually avoid the merch tent? If you're planning to attend the Masters sometime in the future, these are questions you might ask yourself. To get some answers, Garrett Morrison talks with Andy Johnson, Brendan Porath, and Michael Wolf (@bamabearcat), all of whom are deeply familiar with the lay of the land at Augusta National. They give recommendations for what a first-time Masters spectator should do (and not do), and they discuss their favorite spots on the property. For more Fried Egg Masters coverage, check out our Masters hub.
This Saturday episode features Golf Channel's Shane Bacon who fills in for Brendan Porath who attended the final of the U.S. Girl's Junior Amateur. Andy and Shane discuss many topics including Rory McIlroy's championship chances 11 shots back with one round to play. In all seriousness, the two breakdown everything from Louis' remarkable 2021 major championship performances to Spieth's brutal final putt on 18. As you probably have figured out, Brendan Porath, a far more talented writer than Andy usually puts these notes together and his absence is sorely felt. The last thing that Shane and Andy talk about is the NBA Finals and having a job that makes you feel guilty for sitting on the couch. Thank you to Shane for joining during a busy week and listeners for the support! Tomorrow the Champion Golfer of the Year will be crowned.
Brendan Porath is one of my favorite voices in golf. He's a witty writer with lots to say about the events that unfold in professional golf. He has also found ways to extend those talents into success in television and podcasting. Porath has blazed an interesting content trail in a career that has seen him contributing to a number of reputable outlets. At the time of our recording he had just started a new role with Golf Digest as an editor there. I'm excited to see what he produces there. Many golf fans know Porath best for is his co-hosting duties on the popular podcast The Shotgun Start. Alongside Andy Johnson, he delivers laughs, nicknames, and serious golf takes on the show which drops every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The Shotgun Start has built a strong community of listeners who have embraced the banter between the co-hosts and helped turn it into a shared language online. Now a few years into that production journey, Porath and Johnson continue to raise expectations for how new age golf media can deliver compelling content. Like many guests on this show, Porath and I have connected on Twitter and it was great to have an extensive conversation with him here. During our discussion we talked about his career journey, the success of The Shotgun Start, the state of the professional game, and why we both love squeezing in a late evening round of golf. There were quite a few good golf media takes as well. Porath has carved a great place for himself in golf's media landscape and I'm confident he will continue to be one of the voices who shapes its ongoing evolution. It was great to catch up with him and I'm looking forward to when we can enjoy some golf together sometime soon. Until then, I'll keep laughing to he and Andy and enjoying his lovely words on golf. Be sure to follow Brendan Porath on Twitter at @BrendanPorath and subscribe to The Shotgun Start podcast. Thanks as always for listening to Mid-Am Crisis. It's that special time of year where the takes are the hottest. Included are the voices of Chris Solomon and Tron Carter from NoLayingUp, Brendan Porath from SB Nation and Coleman McDowell from GOLF.com. Kyle Porter from CBS had a nuclear take that we'll have to share sometime in the future. The timing just wasn't right today. The fiery takes are outlined below: 1:03 -- Jordan Spieth will win the Masters by four, and another three green jackets in the future 10:22 -- Sergio Garcia's happiness is leading him to a backdoor major victory 16:55 -- Pro golfers shouldn't wear hats 18:30 -- Patrick Reed is bad for golf 25:10 -- Tiger Woods must rescind his 2000 PGA Championship victory 33:05 -- Dustin Johnson will be the GOAT Note: Don't take these takes TOO seriously. That being said, if Spieth or Garcia misses the cut at Augusta, please feel free to unleash the hate.
