Over the course of the next number of short episodes we wilI take a look at another character that influenced the early development and growth of golf in Ireland. Anthony Babington was a native of Co. Derry, educated at Glenalmond in Perthshire and Trinity College Dublin. Babington was introduced to golf at Lisfannon in Donegal and Royal Portrush. He was a scratch player of some repute, competing extensively in the elite national amateur championships of the day. However, it was in the administration of the game that he really excelled, influencing golf at Trinity College, Dollymount, Portrush, Belfast and beyond. Through the medium of his recently uncovered memoirs and historical writings I'm pleased to introduce you to the long golfing life of A.B. Babington and the positive influence that he brought to bear throughout the island of Ireland. I hope you enjoy his recollections! Many thanks for tuning in. Joe Highsmith went from barely making the cut to his first PGA Tour win with an exemplary weekend at the Cognizant Classic to kick of the the "Florida Swing" at PGA National. Jake Knapp fired a sizzling 59 on Thursday to jump out to a lead but was not able to keep the good playing going through 72 holes as he and the rest of the field were passed by Highsmith on the weekend to grab the title. Aspiring honorary Irishman, Richard Pennell, joins us on this episode to reminisce about four golf trips he undertook to Ireland over the past 12 months. The North Coast & Donegal featured heavily and rightly so. The intrepid traveller also found time to schedule two whistle stop visits to County Mayo on the very Wild Atlantic Way, while also visiting a smattering of what the Dublin area has to offer from a golfing perspective. It amounted to a links overload which left Richard energised and plotting an imminent return. We hope the pod may give you some ideas as to where you might travel to in 2025, however, word of warning it might also make you a little envious that Richard passes these visits off as 'work'..... Andrew and Iain welcome the return of Eddie to chew over the remains of the 2024 Open Championship and Xander Schauffele's second major win of the year. It might not be the greatest golfing performance of the week when compared to Eddie's 29-under for three rounds at Loch Lomond, but they still manage to rate it highly in the pantheon of Open Championship displays. At some point in proceedings Andrew effectively NR's from the pod recording as his mind and body shut down following three weeks of tennis and golf talking. In this episode James Henderson is joined by Wilma Erskine OBE, BEM. Wilma was the manager at Royal Portrush Golf Club for 35 years, and played a key role in bringing the Open Championship back to Northern Ireland in 2019. Royal Portrush hosted it's first Open Championship in 1951, with Max Faulkner triumphing over Harry Colt's Dunluce Course... at the time Bernard Darwin was minded to write that Colt's design of the Dunluce links was 'a monument more enduring than Brass'. As listeners will know the Open Championship returned to Royal Portrush in 2019. In advance of the 148th staging of the Championship MacKenzie & Ebert undertook improvement and revision works on both the Dunluce & Valley courses at RP. With the club due to host the 153rd Open in 2025, members at Royal Portrush approved a comprehensive improvement plan for the Valley. These works began in November 2023 and are expected to be complete by August 2024. Works focus upon improving and augmenting the spectator, player and member experience throughout the property. I joined consulting course designer Martin Ebert at Royal Portrush recently for a course walk and podcast recording session as DAR Golf Construction enter the finishing straight on these improvements. Over the course of our hour long chat we explore the works on the Valley Course while also lingering a while on M&E's improvement works at Enniscrone over the past winter. Finally we briefly touch upon M&E's upcoming projects at County Sligo Golf Club, Noordwijk Golf Club in the Netherlands and New South Wales Golf Club in Sydney, Australia. Thanks to Martin, Graham, Graeme, Ashley, John, Nigel and Jim for their help and assistance in putting this episode together, thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy our chat. 944: Josh Zander returns to share his expertise on bunker play in golf. He emphasizes the misconception that players should hit behind the ball in bunkers, explaining that the low point of the swing should be past the ball. He also discusses the importance of body positioning and creating a steep angle of attack in bunker shots. Josh advises players to assess the lie and adjust their technique accordingly, highlighting the need for different clubs and techniques based on bunker conditions. He also emphasizes the importance of having the right attitude and mindset when approaching bunker shots. Josh and Fred cover topics such as setup, club selection, and shot selection based on the lie and slope of the bunker. They also debunk common myths and provide tips for practicing bunker shots. TakeawaysThe low point of the swing in bunker shots should be past the ball, not behind it.Body positioning and creating a steep angle of attack are crucial in bunker play.Assessing the lie and adjusting technique based on bunker conditions is essential.Having the right attitude and mindset when approaching bunker shots can make a significant difference in performance. Proper setup is crucial for successful bunker shots. For uphill lies, set your shoulders slightly into the slope and keep the handle back. For downhill lies, get your shoulders with the slope and have the handle forward. When playing bunker shots, focus on hitting the sand a few inches behind the ball, rather than trying to hit the ball directly.Fairway bunkers require a different approach than greenside bunkers. Play the ball more forward in your stance, open the club face slightly, and have a shallow angle of attack to get the ball up and out of the bunker.Avoid common myths such as hitting way behind the ball or cutting across the ball in bunker shots. Instead, focus on proper technique and understanding the variables of each bunker shot.Practice bunker shots with variability to prepare for different situations on the course. Challenge yourself with different lies and shot options to become comfortable and confident in bunker play.***Summary was AI generated from riverside.fm, our recording platform. This is our final call for you to join host Fred Greene and other Golf Smarter listeners for a once in a lifetime Golf Smarter Royal Adventure to Northern Ireland! All four Fried Egg Golf staffers return for this episode on their impressions of Royal Portrush after a few days playing, walking, and filming its Dunluce Links, Northern Ireland's Open Championship host and perhaps its most renowned course. They debate some of the characteristics that make it so great, changes undergone by Martin Ebert to accommodate The Open, and favorite holes. They also relay a few of their own unique experiences trying to navigate the course, what to look for as you go around, and take on the age-old debate of how you'd split 10 rounds between Royal Portrush and Royal County Down.
In this episode of Eggsplorations, the greatest golfer in the history of Northern Ireland joins to discuss his roots there, his favorite golf memories growing up, and his favorite courses and earliest memories of Royal Portrush and Royal County Down. Rory McIlroy fields questions from TPC Sawgrass as he prepped for The Players while Andy and Brendan were across the Atlantic in his home country acquainting themselves with the golf culture and a few of the world class courses that Rory came to know in his earliest days as a junior standout. He also explains this golden age of pro golf success for the island, which boasts five different major winners since 2007 after a 60-year drought. There's also plenty of banter and insight into what it was like growing up at Holywood, how different it is now as a big shot on the PGA Tour, and much more. Thanks to Rory for his time.
Castlerock might be considered a “throw-in” to a trip up to the Causeway Coast — a way to spend a day that's not at Royal Portrush or Portstewart. As Andy articulates at the top of this episode, it was a course and experience that pleasantly captured him and the kind of unexpected day that really helps redeem these treks to golf-rich areas. Cameron and Brendan also join to discuss some of their favorite features and holes from a true links setting and fabulous day in the sun. There are a few points about where they think it could improve or may have gone too far, but it's a course where their experience had them concluding it is one that should visited on any trip to this part of the world.
