Happy Ryder Cup Eve! As the first day of action in Rome approaches, Garrett checks in with three members of the Fried Egg Golf team—Andy Johnson, Brendan Porath, and Joseph LaMagna—to get their predictions for which team will win at Marco Simone, what the final score will be, and who will prove the most and least valuable players. For the second part of the episode (34:15), Garrett is joined by Shane Ryan, author of The Cup They Couldn't Lose, to discuss how the Ryder Cup has changed over time. Garrett and Shane provide historical context for this week's event by exploring how Europe gained the upper hand on the U.S. team starting in the late 1980s, and how Team USA has only recently begun to match its opponent's level of organization and leadership.
With our resident Euro supporters in transit home from the Solheim Cup we call up Shane Ryan for a thoroughly biased American preview of the 2023 Ryder Cup which (finally) begins this week in Rome. We take a final look at the course and some recent setup changes, the American's approach to the event, our picks for MVP and LVP plus some other predictions and a few listener questions as well. Few golf writers know the Ryder Cup like Shane Ryan. Since his book, The Cup They Couldn't Lose: America, The Ryder Cup, and the Long Road to Whistling Straits, he's only increased his exhaustive reporting of the biennial event's origins and history. On this week's TGJ Podcast, he and host Tom Coyne discuss the best and worst captains, the formation of the pod system, bad blood and preview next week's showdown in Rome. The Golfer's Journal Podcast is presented by Titleist and made possible by member support.
The Sambuca Boys discuss the European Ryder Cup team's six captain's picks, highlighted by Ludvig Aberg and Nicolai Hojgaard. Shane Ryan issues a mea culpa on Aberg after the fledgling superstar (Aberg, not Ryan) wins the Omega European Masters to earn a spot on the European team. The boys talk about snubs, which pick could come back to haunt European captain Luke Donald, and how the team sizes up to the Americans. Subscribe to the Ryder Cup Radicals on the Golf Digest Local Knowledge feed.
The boys sit down with Jon Rahm in NYC on this bonus edition of The Loop and chat about Augusta National, the Ryder Cup and much more. Shane Ryan also joins us to break down Zach Johnson's captain's picks for the U.S. Ryder Cup team.
