This is a Proper Victory Monday episode following Ryan Fox's first major championship win! Andy and Brendan went LIVE on YouTube on Sunday afternoon to recap a whirlwind of a final round at Royal Birkdale. Of course, they begin with the 2026 Champion Golfer of the Year, Ryan Fox, who birdied the 18th hole to win in regulation and avoid a playoff with Cameron Young. Kevin Van Valkenburg stops by from the Open Media Center to share some notes from his afternoon following the final group, setting the scene for one of the best major finishes in recent memory. Brendan spent his time on the course with local hero Tommy Fleetwood and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, latter of whom found himself in a rules situation with the same walking official as Bryson's group on Friday. Brendan was front-and-center for one of the great TIO debates of our time and provides a bevy of information as to what was happening in the moment. He then gets Andy going on his thoughts on Royal Birkdale and the course's recent renovations that prepared it for this Open Championship before Andy continues on with some critiques of NBC's coverage throughout the weekend. There are plenty Storylines Nobody's Talking About to wrap the week, covering all-important Wikipedia Top Tens, Rory's work as a lead negotiator, and what was going down on Twitter during the Sunday broadcast. PJ gets tapped to share his thoughts on a runner-up finish for Cameron Young, whose score of -9 looked like it may hold up for the last 2.5 hours of the tournament. We look back on a dramatic finish at Royal Birkdale, where Ryan Fox closed with a strong Sunday round and won on the 72nd hole. We say he stayed composed under pressure, kept executing shots, and handled some very unlucky breaks on the closing holes without letting them affect him.We also discuss how the course played over the week. We say it was firm, dry and much harder in the afternoon, while the morning wave had the best scoring conditions. We note that the changes to the course produced strong championship golf, with several holes forcing players to choose different clubs and strategies. We reflect on the other main contenders, especially Sam Burns, Tommy Fleetwood and Scottie Scheffler. We say Burns started well but made a series of errors that took him out of the lead, Fleetwood had a very strong week but faded late, and Scheffler struck the ball well but lost many strokes on the greens.A large part of the discussion focuses on the Bryson DeChambeau ruling and the difference between that incident and Scottie Scheffler's ruling on 17. We say the rules were applied in different ways, that the evidence and intent were debated, and that the decisions raised questions about consistency and about how golf polices itself. We finish with the wider context of Fox's win, including his New Zealand sporting background, the significance of the result for New Zealand golf, and a few lighter notes on the week's other winners and losers, including the event's attendance, the amateur performances, and the people behind the tournament setup. Smylie was on-site chasing the story in real time — he walks through racing out to the hole, tracking down the actual divot, and simulating Bryson's swing to assess whether the penalty was warranted. The ruling drops Bryson to T5 at 5 under, three back of the lead heading into the weekend.Plus: two Royal Birkdale course records as Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns both card 62s, the tied-lowest round in major championship history; a bigger-picture debate on whether rules enforcement is consistent across the PGA Tour, USGA, and R&A (with the Wyndham Clark, Joaquin Niemann, Jon Rahm, and Sam Burns/Oakmont cases all on the table); real questions about whether Bryson tees it up Saturday; a driver-strategy breakdown comparing Tommy Fleetwood and Jon Rahm's approaches on the 10th hole; and score predictions for the cut line and the weekend leader.Don't forget to like, comment, subscribe, and follow us on socials @thesmylieshow!Chapters1:25 Bryson DeChambeau's penalty controversy breaks2:18 Smylie's on-the-ground chase to the 5th hole5:22 Breaking down Bryson's backswing and the fescue lie8:43 Bryson's agent statement and the intent question10:03 Big picture: is rules enforcement consistent across tours?13:37 Would Bryson withdraw from The Open?17:00 Debate: is the two-shot penalty too harsh?22:46 Friday's other big stories: course records & leaderboard23:55 Driver strategy: Tommy Fleetwood vs. Jon Rahm on 1028:45 Cut line prediction, Ryan Gerard shoutout & weekend outlook#brysondechambeau #theopen #smylieshow #golf

He might not lead The Open Championship at halfway but all the headlines at Birkdale are being made by Bryson DeChambeau, who finished his second round in second place but was then handed a two-shot penalty for improving his lie on the 5th hole. Andrew and Eddie discuss it all while Iain digs around for further news then joins the chat. Quite apart from all that, it was a day of extraordinary golf with 62s being handed in by leader Lucas Herbert and American Sam Burns. Even bigger names are not too far away with Scheffler, Cam Young and Tommy Fleetwood, but the question remains: Will Bryson play? And will Donald Trump put in a call to have it overturned?Brought to you by: www.petermillar.co.ukAnd by: www.ping.comEmail:tcf@thechippingforecast.co.ukInstagram: @chippingforecast Hosted on Acast. This episode we discuss the setup for the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, with particular focus on the firm, fast conditions and how much water the course is losing each day through high wind and heat. We talk about how the greens are being monitored and adjusted with modern technology, and how the course presentation is being kept under control. We also look at how players may adapt their strategy, with many expected to leave driver out in favor of irons, mini drivers or three-woods. The discussion covers wedge bounce, firm fairways, bunkers, and how the course conditions create difficult equipment decisions for the field. We spend a lot of time on the holes that could shape the championship, especially 1, 10, 13, 14, 17 and 18. We talk about the challenge of the opening stretch, the reachable but dangerous par 5s, the narrow closing hole, and how wind direction could change the approach on several key holes. We then turn to likely scoring and possible outcomes, with the group largely agreeing that the winning score is more likely to be in the high single digits rather than very low. We also discuss which players may suit the test, including Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Jordan Spieth, Bryson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Reed, Matt Fitzpatrick, Harris English and others. Finally, we cover the “Tooting Beck” low-round prediction for British and Irish players, and close with a brief exchange about England's football match against Argentina. The Open Championship is here! What a tournament, what a history. And today Nick and Mark preview The Open.Mark asks Nick about when he played in The Open Championship in 2008 and Greg Norman led at 54 holes, tied for the lead with 8 holes to play ...and he was retired and spending his time playing tennis !!As usual we have a look at the power rankings, and we start with a convo about Tommy Fleetwood - this is his home course, and Nick says there is nothing like local knowledge of a course, and Mark says he is the best player to not win a major, so it could be a good weekend for him.Nick notes that Min Woo's iron play is looking much better, and his short game is on point. Mark says this course suits Min Woo, and he is one of the best stinger players he's ever seen, and he deserves to be considered the leading Australian in the field.Mark talks about how this course has seen plenty of great putters win, seems to suit them. Nick isn't looking forward to seeing Tom Kim play, describing him as 'brutal' to watch (in reference to his pace).Scheffler is #5 in the power rankings, and Mark feels he knows why that is the case. Nick's 'concern' about Scottie this week is his putting.Rory #4 in the power rankings, Nick saw a funny piece of footage featuring Rory this week which we have a listen to. Matt Fitzpatrick...he is red hot, both Nick and Mark are huge fans and reckon he's set for a big weekend.Mark cannot understand why Morikawa is #2 in the power rankings for The Open, Nick can and explains why. Nick goes on to explain the strategy for playing this course. With the tournament finishing at a similar time to the World Cup Final, Nick tells Mark that there is a contingency to adjust tee times if England are in the final to avoid the situation of empty stands, or cheering from the stands as people keep an eye on the World Cup.And before the turn we discuss some of the fun, new markets Betr have on the tournament, there are some crackers if you want to whack 5 bucks on a couple. And what will our Talk Birdie Betr multi be? We kick it around before the turn, and decide after. We text Hummer live, and get the odds back in record time. The crew is deep into summer golf season — and this week there's plenty to talk about. First up, the Women's US Open heads to Riviera Country Club, and the guys make the case for why Riv might actually suit the women's game better than the men's. The iconic par-4 10th gets its due, and Coach Clappy shares why he'll be there in person — supporting his student Davina Zand as she competes in the Curtis Cup at Bel-Air.From there, the conversation turns to one of coaching's great debates: has golf instruction become too technical? With launch monitors, video, and biomechanics data at every corner, the guys ask what would happen if you stripped it all away — and why the best coaches in the world often keep it brutally simple. Think Butch Harmon telling Tommy Fleetwood to "shut the door" with his hip. Then it gets personal. Cam Smith's recent move away from long-time coach Grant Field sparks a broader conversation about when it's right to change coaches — and when it isn't. How do you know it's time to move on? What does loyalty really look like? And should coaches be cutting ties with students more often than they do?Next week: TaylorMade's Chris Trott (Trotty Golf) joins to talk equipment fitting — drop your questions now.
