The 56 million gallons of radioactive waste created from decades of plutonium enrichment at Hanford are stored in 177 massive, underground tanks on 18 different ‘farms’ spread out over the 580 square miles of the nuclear reservation in Washington State. Most of the tanks are single-shelled, but 28 of them are double-shelled, which helps prevent waste from getting into the ground. Each tank holds between 55,000 and a million gallons of toxic waste. The U.S. Department of Energy oversees the facility and is responsible for preventing the contamination of both the groundwater and the Columbia River. The DOE is also in the process of testing its multi-billion dollar vitrification plant, which is intended to bind-up the radioactive waste in glass logs to safely store it. We get a tour of the tank farm from Karthik Subramanian, who serves as Chief Operating Officer of Washington River Protection Solutions, the tank farm operations contractor. And we sit down with Brian Vance, the Department of Energy’s top manager in charge of Hanford to hear more about tank integrity, the status of the vitrification plant and the overall clean up progress.
The Department of Energy's Hanford site in Washington State is engaged in one of the largest and most complex environmental cleanup challenges on the planet. Multiple contractors are performing various parts of a decades-long mission that will ultimately result in 56 million gallons of radioactive waste being converted to a solid glass form for ultimate disposal. In this week's episode, Brian Vance, Manager of DOE's Office of River Protection and the Richland Operations Office, discusses the One Hanford approach and the vital importance of seamless teamwork to mission success.Visit the Gone Fission Nuclear Report channel on youtube.com for a videocast of episodes since November 7, 2022.
In today's episode I speak with my former college roommate, Brian Vance. He is currently at Northwestern University in their Doctorate of Physical Therapy program. We start off by discussing what PT school is like and what areas he finds especially interesting in the field. Brian takes us through the process that physical therapists take when evaluating clients. I ask Brian questions that I've been curious to know more about including common PT myths, his thoughts on the RICE method, the knees over toes guy that's been taking over social media, and how chiropractors and PTs view one another as professionals. Brian gives great research backed answers to all these questions. We finish up by discussing some practical applications for athletes to help with injury prevention, mobility, and general health from a body movement perspective. You'll be able to take so much interesting and practical information with you from this podcast!

Catalina Brewing Company in Tucson is a brewery, but more than that, they are a community. Hank Rowe and Brian Vance have created an environment that brings beer and bikes together perfectly with their mantra of We Bike, We Brew. Their story of camaraderie and common love for biking and beer was a natural fit for opening up Catalina Brewing Company. We were thrilled to chat with Brian about the brewery and the beer, but as we always say, beer is about the people, so we talked more than just beer. Join us for this fun conversation about the joys and trials and tribulations of a brewery, while working a day job, raising a family and trying to find time for those epic bike rides.
