Today we are bringing you Lucille Ball in the pilot series, if you will, to one of TV history's most blockbuster series, I Love Lucy. My Favorite Husband starred Lucille Ball and her husband who was then played by actor Richard Denning. Denning was slated to make the transition to the I Love Lucy TV series, but Lucille pushed for her real-life husband Desi Arnaz to assume the role. The episode centers on Lucy's frantic attempts to cash a $500 check she won on a radio game show called "Everybody Wins" within a tight 25-minute window. This comedy episode will lead into Lucille Ball's appearance on “Suspense,” with our special guest Dr. Joe Webb, on Thursday. EPISODE 55 - “Favorite Classic Films of the 1950s ” - 09/30/2024 ** This episode is sponsored brought to you by BetterHelp. Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/BENEATH and get on your way to being your best self.” ** The 1950s was a real transitional decade for classic films. As we got further away from WW2, and the Cold War began to rise up prominently, there was a cynicism across the land that influenced the content of many Hollywood movies. Films took on a grittier, more realistic feel, and the subject matters were darker and more controversial. It was the decade that sparked masterpieces like “Sunset Boulevard,” “All About Eve,” “From Here To Eternity,” “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Anatomy of a Murder,” “ Strangers on a Train,” “Shane,” and “High Noon.” Listen as Steve and Nan talk about some special 1950s films that inspire them. It's a B-cember to Remember here at Spooky Tuesday! To finish the year in festive fashion, we decided to do one last lil theme month and dedicate December to B horror movies, so of course we had to start with a classic. Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) may have marked the end of the monster movie era, but it laid the ground work for a whole bunch of famous scary movies that followed. Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water is an obvious one — but Steven Spielberg was taking notes for Jaws, too. On our latest episode, we're talking film history, four foot dicks, and lighting things on fire.References:https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/a-brief-history-of-the-creature-from-the-black-lagoon-franchise/https://www.rogerebert.com/mzs/from-the-deep-on-the-staying-power-of-creature-from-the-black-lagoonhttps://www.monstersofmakeup.com/2021/02/10/making-up-the-creature-from-the-black-lagoon/https://www.geekslop.com/life/fads-and-trends/fads-and-trends-1900/2010/the-3-d-movie-craze-of-the-1950shttps://www.britannica.com/topic/Creature-from-the-Black-Lagoonhttps://colinmcmahonauthor.com/2020/04/16/why-creature-from-the-black-lagoon-has-become-more-horrifying-with-time/https://filmschoolrejects.com/creature-from-the-black-lagoon-real-designer/

"My Favorite Husband" starring Lucille Ball and Richard Denning... was the radio pre-cursor to "I Love Lucy." On television, Lucille Ball insisted that her real-life husband, Desi Arnaz play the role of her show husband and Richard Denning was out. Jello, the sponsor of the radio show was not happy and dropped the TV show. Phillip Morris Cigarettes picked up the sponsorship and the rest is comedy history.

My Favorite Husband was first broadcast as a one-time special on CBS Radio on July 5, 1948. CBS's new series Our Miss Brooks had been delayed coming to the air, so to fill in the gap that week CBS aired the audition program (the radio equivalent of a television pilot) for My Favorite Husband.[1] Lucille Ball and Lee Bowman played the characters of Liz and George Cugat, and a positive response to this broadcast convinced CBS to launch My Favorite Husband as a series. Bowman was not available to do the series, so when it debuted later that month it starred Lucille Ball and Richard Denning as the leads. The couple lived at 321 Bundy Drive in the fictitious city of Sheridan Falls, and were billed as, "two people who live together and like it."The episode would progress into a minor crisis or problem, typically caused by one of Liz's funny ideas. Each episode would end with the problem solved and Liz saying, "Thanks, George. You're my favorite husband."
