Context-Sensitivity in a world hurtling toward Context-Blindness! On September 26, 1983, a Soviet early-warning system was confidently wrong. One man saw it. His name was Stanislav Petrov, and almost no one ever thanked him for the fact that three billion people are alive today. . . In this episode of The Polymathic Perspective, Dov Baron examines the cognitive skill that lets Petrov override a confident, wrong machine, the same skill the AI age is about to need more than any moment in human history, and the same skill the modern world is quietly destroying.. . This is an episode about context-sensitivity: the capacity to read what dashboards, protocols, and algorithms cannot. Why do some people walk into a room and know within ninety seconds who actually runs the place? Why most major organizational change initiatives fail for reasons no executive can see. And why are the people who can read context being labeled "too much" at exactly the moment civilization needs them most? . . The conversation moves through cognitive science, neurodiversity research, organizational psychology, geopolitical history, and the architecture of human-machine systems. If you have ever been told you are too sensitive, too intense, an overthinker, or that you read too much into things, this episode is for you. What you have is not a personality flaw. It is a capacity. And the world is finally about to need it. . ABOUT THE SHOW The Polymathic Perspective examines the emotional logic beneath power, culture, identity, and meaning. Together, we discover how psychological, cultural, and geopolitical patterns drive behaviors, not just in people, but in systems. If you have been told that your curiosity is a liability, you need to know it is your greatest asset. . ABOUT DOV BARON Dov Baron has spent thirty years inside the rooms where leaders, founders, and executives make the decisions that shape organizations and the people inside them. He works at the intersection of strategy, cultural diagnosis, leadership development, mergers, transitions, and succession. . Ale keď zostarneš, vystrieš ruky a iný ťa opáše a bude viesť, kam nechceš.“ 19 To povedal, aby naznačil, akou smrťou oslávi Boha. A preto ani naša služba Bohu nebude nikdy bezchybná. No Kristus neprichádza lámať trstinu. Tam, kde by človek očakával trest, Ježiš ponúka dôveru. Tam, kde my cítime hanbu, On ponúka poslanie. On hľadá milujúcich. Modlitba: Pane, my sme často slabí, zúbožení. Myslíme len na seba a nemilujeme. Chceme zachrániť seba, no Ty nás učíš svoj život stratiť pre druhých. Pomáhaj nám byť dobrými pastiermi vo všetkých našich vzťahoch! Amen.
No other band with roots in Swedish death metal did it like Comecon. Not even close. We find a few similarities to Carbonized, but generally, this band is unique, special, and underappreciated enough that we had to come to their rescue for a little over an hour. Headed by brainiacs Pelle Strom and Rasmus Ekman, Comecon cycled through three different vocalists over three different albums (L.G. Petrov, Martin van Drunen, Marc Grewe), and if you have any interest in death metal with a distinct difference, please give this episode a listen… Note I: Listener challenge!! As mentioned in this episode: if you have a solid working knowledge of Comecon-related bands The Krixhjalters and Omnitron, assemble a 10-song episode, 5 songs each band, about 2 minutes per snippet (you can just send us titles and time codes). We'll do an episode on it! We are sadly ignorant of these bands, but really should know them, given our love of Comecon. ALSO: Enter the Hunt isn't directly related to Comecon, as Jeff surmised. It did feature Pontius, of Krixhjalters, and indeed, two members of Candlemass from our beloved Dactylis Glomerata/From the 13th Sun period. We still have so much to learn. Note II: Speaking of having much to learn: we're not exactly up on the entire vinyl reissue scene, because we didn't know Comecon's Fable Frolic was released with the original logo, as Jeff mentions in this episode. Lookie here! https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/30811545 Note III: Jeff's Voivod book, ‘Always Moving: The Strange Multiverse of Voivod,' is now available. V tomhle díle Lascivní.cz podcastu si Petr a Aly zvou Kláru, zakladatelku pardubického kinky/shibari uskupení NMRV. Co Klára plánuje, jaké má sny a co by chtěla, aby si lidi z těchto akcí odnášeli. Zmätenosť, pochybnosti a skepticizmus tu boli už dávno. Greg Laurie
Peacewarts: Dept. of Chronicled Courage - The Man Who Said No (Class 4) We study Vasili Arkhipov and his refusal to launch a nuclear torpedo during the Cuban Missile Crisis. We explore how a shift in frame of mind—from combat to communication—can break the physics of escalation and serve as a manual override for broken systems. Homework: Look upthe K-19 submarine accident (1961) or the Cuban Missile Crisis depth charge signals to understand the high-stress environment Arkhipov was working in. Write down one questionabout any of this episode's topics. If you don't have a question, write “no question.” Optional: Think of a time you were in a "heated" situation—an argument or a group decision. Looking back, was there a different way to "frame" the problem that didn't involve a winner and a loser? How would that change of mind have altered the outcome? In this episode of the Explaining History Podcast, we step away from the battlefields and examine how the February Revolution of 1917 was received and interpreted in two key Western cities: London and New York. When the Tsar fell in March 1917, governments around the world struggled to make sense of what was happening. Russia under revolutionary conditions was—and remains—notoriously difficult to penetrate. Whose reports could be trusted? Which factions would prevail? And what would it mean for the ongoing war against Germany? For Britain, the stakes were existential. The government of David Lloyd George hoped desperately that a new Russian administration would fight more effectively than the Tsar's. The Labour left, by contrast, hoped the revolution might end the war altogether. Both would be disappointed.Drawing on Robert Service's superb Spies and Commissars, we explore this forgotten moment when London briefly became the world's largest hub for Russian political émigrés. Maxim Litvinov, the future Bolshevik commissar, was living in the East End with his English wife Ivy, agitating against the war and meeting with anti-war MPs like Ramsay MacDonald. Across the city, the Russian embassy at Cheshire House—still adorned with portraits of the imperial family—found itself issuing visas to revolutionaries it had spent decades monitoring. We follow the revolutionaries as they attempt to make their way home, braving U-boat-infested North Sea crossings from Aberdeen to Bergen, and examine the peculiar dilemmas this created for British authorities. Should they expedite the return of anti-war militants? Detain them? Deport them? Then we cross the Atlantic to New York, where the American press—unconstrained by British wartime censorship—reported the revolution days before London or Paris. Leon Trotsky and Nikolai Bukharin were there, denouncing US entry into the war from East Coast platforms, while Jewish refugees from the Empire celebrated the fall of the Tsar. From the Albert Hall rally of 10,000 people honouring Russia's "freedom" to Brixton prison cells holding revolutionaries deemed too dangerous, this is a story of hope, naivety, intrigue, and the complex international dimensions of a revolution that would soon take a very different turn.Topics covered:The British government's hopes and fears after the February RevolutionMaxim Litvinov and the Russian émigré community in LondonRamsay MacDonald, the Labour Party, and the anti-war movementThe Russian embassy's awkward transition under the Provisional GovernmentThe logistical challenges of returning to Russia via U-boat-infested seasNew York's reaction to the revolution and America's entry into the warTrotsky and Bukharin's anti-war agitation in the United StatesThe Albert Hall rally and British left-wing enthusiasm for the revolutionThe detention of Chicharin and Petrov in Brixton prisonIf you enjoy the podcast, please consider supporting us on Patreon for ad-free listening and exclusive video content.

A story about choosing margins over momentum—and letting investors call you wrongThis episode is for SaaS CEOs stuck around 20% EBITDA and wondering what it actually takes to double it without cutting their way there. Most SaaS companies treat 20% EBITDA as a healthy number. Georgi Petrov targets 50.Georgi, CEO of Uxify, has founded four companies in 15 years with two exits—including one to WP Engine. He doesn't get there by cutting. He gets there by building differently from day one: small teams with high ownership, self-service at premium prices, and a refusal to add cost before it earns its place. And this inspired me to invite Georgi to my podcast. We explore why targeting 50% EBITDA changes every hiring decision, every pricing decision, and every partnership decision a founder makes. Georgi shares hard-won lessons on why small teams outperform large ones, why focus beats optionality, and why selling business outcomes—not product features—makes premium self-service pricing work.We also zoom in on two of the 10 traits that define remarkable software companies: – Acknowledge you cannot please everyone – Focus on the essenceGeorgi's journey proves that starting from profit forces every decision to earn its place. Here's one of Georgi's quotes that captures how he actually gets to 50% EBITDA:"Most of the high-leverage decisions that we made turn out to be not so good decisions. We find the good somewhere in the middle. Not having a support team sounds like a high-leverage decision, but that's ultimately bad, because customers need 24/7 support. So, ultimately, expand the support team, but do it in a smarter way, and that's how we end up. If we're super able to leverage a lot, very likely we can achieve much more than 50%, but I think you end up somewhere about 50% ultimately."By listening to this episode, you'll learn:Why profitability shapes better decisions than fundraising ever willWhat self-service at premium prices requires to actually workWhy the biggest partners rarely deliver the biggest resultsWhen adding people stops creating productivity and starts destroying itFor more information about the guest from this week: Guest: Georgi Petrov, CEO of Uxify Website: uxify.com
Skutky apoštolov 4:32 Množstvo tých, čo uverili, bolo jedno srdce a duša a nikto nepokladal za svoje nič z toho, čo mu patrilo, ale všetko mali spoločné.33 Apoštoli s veľkou mocou vydávali svedectvo o zmŕtvychvstaní Pána Ježiša a na všetkých spočívala veľká milosť.34 Nikto totiž medzi nimi netrpel biedou, pretože všetci, čo mali polia a domy, ich predávali a čo za ne utŕžili, prinášali35 a kládli k nohám apoštolov a každý dostal podľa toho, koľko potreboval.36 Aj Jozef, ktorému apoštoli dali prímenie Barnabáš, čo v preklade znamená syn útechy, levita, rodák z Cypru,37 mal roľu, predal ju, priniesol peniaze a položil ich k nohám apoštolov.Skutky apoštolov 5:1 Istý muž menom Ananiáš, spolu s manželkou Zafirou, predali majetok. 2 S manželkiným vedomím si časť peňazí odložil a zvyšok priniesol a položil apoštolom k nohám. 3 No Peter mu povedal: Ananiáš! Prečo ti satan naplnil srdce, aby si klamal Duchu Svätému a odložil si si z peňazí za predané pole? 4 Nebolo vari tvoje, kým si ho mal? A keď si ho už predal, nemohol si s peniazmi zaň voľne nakladať? 5 Keď Ananiáš počul tieto slová, padol a naposledy vydýchol. A všetkých, čo to počuli, sa zmocnil veľký strach. 6 Nato mladší z nich vstali, zavinuli ho, vyniesli a pochovali. Keď mládenci vošli dnu, našli ju mŕtvu, vyniesli ju a pochovali k jej mužovi.

In 1983, Stanislav Petrov, a Soviet lieutenant colonel, sat in a bunker watching a red screen flash “MISSILE LAUNCH.” Protocol demanded he report it to superiors, which would very likely trigger a retaliatory nuclear strike. Petrov didn't. He reasoned that if the US were actually attacking, they wouldn't fire just 5 missiles — they'd empty the silos. He bet the fate of the world on a hunch that his machine was broken. He was right.Paul Scharre, the former Army Ranger who led the Pentagon team that wrote the US military's first policy on autonomous weapons, has a question: What would an AI have done in Petrov's shoes? Would an AI system have been flexible and wise enough to make the same judgement? Or would it immediately launch a counterattack?Paul joins host Luisa Rodriguez to explain why we are hurtling toward a “battlefield singularity” — a tipping point where AI increasingly replaces humans in much of the military, changing the way war is fought with speed and complexity that outpaces humans' ability to keep up.Links to learn more, video, and full transcript: https://80k.info/psMilitaries don't necessarily want to take humans out of the loop. But Paul argues that the competitive pressure of warfare creates a “use it or lose it” dynamic. As former Deputy Secretary of Defense Bob Work put it: “If our competitors go to Terminators, and their decisions are bad, but they're faster, how would we respond?”Once that line is crossed, Paul warns we might enter an era of “flash wars” — conflicts that spiral out of control as quickly and inexplicably as a flash crash in the stock market, with no way for humans to call a timeout. In this episode, Paul and Luisa dissect what this future looks like:Swarming warfare: Why the future isn't just better drones, but thousands of cheap, autonomous agents coordinating like a hive mind to overwhelm defences. The Gatling gun cautionary tale: The inventor of the Gatling gun thought automating fire would reduce the number of soldiers needed, saving lives. Instead, it made war significantly deadlier. Paul argues AI automation could do the same, increasing lethality rather than creating “bloodless” robot wars. The cyber frontier: While robots have physical limits, Paul argues cyberwarfare is already at the point where AI can act faster than human defenders, leading to intelligent malware that evolves and adapts like a biological virus. The US-China “adoption race”: Paul rejects the idea that the US and China are in a spending arms race (AI is barely 1% of the DoD budget). Instead, it's a race of organisational adoption — one where the US has massive advantages in talent and chips, but struggles with bureaucratic inertia that might not be a problem for an autocratic country.Paul also shares a personal story from his time as a sniper in Afghanistan — watching a potential target through his scope — that fundamentally shaped his view on why human judgement, with all its flaws, is the only thing keeping war from losing its humanity entirely. This episode was recorded on October 23-24, 2025.Chapters:Cold open (00:00:00)Who's Paul Scharre? In part two of our deep dive into the Petrov Affair, we unpack the political chaos that followed one of Australia's biggest Cold War scandals. The defection of a Soviet spy didn't just make headlines, it reshaped an election, launched a Royal Commission, and sent the Labor Party spiralling into accusations of communism. We look at how the opposition leader's desperate attempt to clear his name became a full-blown witch hunt, how fear shaped the nation's politics, and what life looked like for the Petrov's after the dust settled, trying to then live quietly in Australia.

In this Big Talk, we are very excited to be unpacking the world of spies during the Cold War. The Cold War was one nerve-wracking periods in modern history. So in part one, we explore how its paranoia, politics, and power struggles impacted the whole world, but specifically, Australia. We'll look at how this global rivalry between the Western and Eastern nations sparked the creation of ASIO and how everyday fears of communist infiltration seeped into our politics, our media, and the public's imagination. But at the centre of this Cold War storm was a truly wild Australian story: the Petrovs. In this episode we begin to tell the story of Vladimir and Evdokia Petrov, Soviet diplomats living a quiet life in Canberra - until it was revealed they were actually Soviet spies leaking information back to the USSR.
A special look at episode 1 of Mike Baker's PDB special subscriber only series: On September 26th, 1983, the world came closer to nuclear war than most people ever realized. Inside a secret Soviet bunker, Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov faced a terrifying choice: trust the computers that screamed U.S. missiles were on the way—or trust his gut. Protocol said one phone call could unleash thousands of Soviet warheads and end civilization in less than an hour. This is the story of how one man's decision in the middle of the night may have saved humanity. In this first episode of PDB's The Day the World Almost Ended, Mike Baker takes you inside the Cold War's most dangerous moment, explores the global tensions that set the stage, and explains why Petrov's judgment still matters in today's world of AI, cyber threats, and hair-trigger nuclear systems.Watch now to learn how close we came to annihilation—and why the fate of billions rested on a single man at a console in 1983.
