Each summer, our Shine Disabilities Ministry team hosts Camp Freedom, which is an action-packed weekend where campers with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities experience summer camp in a way they most enjoy. The blessings and the memories and the logistics from the event always leave me asking “How did we do that?” But as we see through the ministry of Peter and John in Acts 3-4, we didn't do any of it. The Holy Spirit did it!

One lucky bidder at the Barrett-Jackson 2023 Scottsdale auction drove away with a custom 2021 Shelby Super Snake Count's Kustoms edition car, with all proceeds to help disabled veterans and first responders. The collaboration car comes with multiple parties, including Camp Freedom, Count's Kustoms out of Las Vegas, and Shelby America. The 2021 Super Snake is the first ever collaboration car by Shelby America to leave their showroom, however, this isn't the first time Camp Freedom has collaborated with Count's Kustoms. The car features a “5.0-liter Coyote engine producing 800 horsepower, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission,” according to Barrett-Jackson.... In Episode 7 of The Jim Gale show, guest Matt Guedes brings awareness, compassion and great hope to the traumas our veterans and first responders, gold stars and their families face. These “American heroes” get great support through the 2,300-acre Camp Freedom in Pennsylvania, where Matt works as executive director, paying it forward to bring the healing powers of the outdoors to those who are disabled or challenged by their traumas. Free to all, the camp offers fishing, hunting, hiking, walking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing activities–or, as he says: “Anything outdoors we do it, and we do it with a purpose.” Matt Guedes: “We're seeing lives literally saved through outdoor adventures.” Co-hosts Jim Gale and Matthew Britt, moved by Matt's insights on the impact of trauma to our 4-million plus disabled veterans, and untold numbers of first responders, offer insights and solutions, including the possibilities of collaborating to start a Freedom Farm Academy onsite. Learn more about Freedom Farm Academy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rNdlAuqb3A Jim suggests, and Matt Guedes agrees, that collaborating with The Freedom Farm Academy could provide a way to build more community at Camp Freedom. It could also potentially allow veterans to use their continuing education funds to invest in learning how to create and manage a food forest, and oversee a profitable business. “It's a perfect alignment in every way–to teach people how to be free, and grow food in the midst of a food chain disaster, is a good business to be in,” Jim shares. Isolation is the number one issue facing those disabled by trauma, according to Matt Guedes. Topics covered in this interview: –Overview of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and its impact on our veterans and first responders. –Matt Guedes shares that a trauma specialist taught him to see trauma, not as a disorder, which has a concept of permanence and finality to it. Instead, by focusing on trauma as an injury (which can actually be traced in a brain scan as such), hope is created–for injuries can be healed. – Matt Guedes:”Trauma is real and it has an effect on our mental, on our physical and on our spiritual lives, and it has an effect on all of us.” Jim: Recommends the book, Molecules of Emotion: The Science Behind Mind-Body Medicine:(https://www.amazon.com/Molecules-Emotion-Science-Mind-Body-Medicine/dp/0684846349) –Three negative patterns of dealing with trauma: isolation, drugs (which sometimes start with a prescription) or alcohol use, which then lead to desperation. –Ways to shift: Fight the impulse to isolate, get outside, find one or two trusted friends with whom to speak. “It's the relationships that give you the sustainability to get off that train wreck you may be on,” Matt Guedes stresses. –Self-care, serving others and contributing, as a way out of depression, are also discussed. Camp Freedom - Galatians 6:1-6: Relationships. Few things bring us greater joy AND greater frustration. It's the old adage:"I really love the church - it's just the people I can't stand! "When we enter into a relationship with God, we find ourselves entangled in a web of relationships with God's people. How do we find grace in and through those friendships? What kind of friend are we to others? In Paul's final words to the churches of Galatia, he shares incredibly important, life-changing truths about how to get along with each other and how to care for each other. Come and join us for a time of worship and teaching and for the closing moments of Camp Freedom with the imminently huggable Director Harshman! It will be brilliant!!

Camp Freedom - Galatians 1:1-23: Summer Camp-what images come to mind? If you went as a child or teen maybe it's memories of sing-a-longs at a campfire, skills training, or a summer romance. Maybe you had a spiritually defining moment at summer camp. Camp by the very nature of what it is, takes us out of our routines and presents us with new experiences. It slows us down (remember how much walking you have to do!?) and gives us a chance to breathe in fresh air. When you think about it, camp is often a first, away from home, exploration of freedom. This weekend, we'll begin our summer teaching series, Camp Freedom that will lead us through a study of the book of Galatians. In this letter, Paul challenges us as believers to not get caught or tangled up in anything, but following Jesus. After all, Jesus came to set us free! We're looking forward to this summer, praying that as we journey together through Galatians, we'll be challenged to breathe in the presence of Jesus and walk in dependence on him, every day.
