John is one of the fantastic lads who make up the Really, 007! podcast. While David has been honoured to be their guest multiple times and they've got to know each other well in real life, this is the first time John and David have publicly talked just the two of them. Both men help people with problems as part of their professional lives having been motivated to do so by some of their own adverse experiences. Rarely are real life problems as easy to ‘eliminate' as they are in the world of Bond. But that shouldn't prevent us from trying. John was eager to come onto On Our Minds Only? and we're so glad he did. The story of John's mental heath journey is a gripping one - and it has the power to change lives. Both had no idea how this conversation would unfold. They start by introducing the topics of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)… and then (a bit like episodes of ‘Really, 007!') things take off in unexpected directions… We won't spoil it here, but instead urge you to hit PLAY and let John's story unfold in its entirety. A sneak preview: It begins with an eleven year old John having his world view turned upside down by a viewing of On Her Majesty's Secret Service. We move on to nineteen year old John experiencing a significantly traumatic incident which was to reverberate through his whole life ever afterwards… With great vulnerability, John doesn't hold back from sharing what happened when he hit rock bottom. But this is ultimately an incredibly hopeful story. John made a life-changing decision to devote a lot of his time to helping others, using what he'd learned about himself. Along the way, John and David relate everything back to Bond. This includes their own deeply personal takes on Licence to Kill and Skyfall. Although this episode is longer than the others in this series, you will definitely want to watch the whole thing. Let us know what you think.

Shannon's music, available on all major platforms, resonates with a wide audience, offering solace and understanding to those who have shared similar experiences. Nichole Crawford is a U.S. Army veteran with combat service in Iraq post-9/11. Like many veterans, Nichole believed that coming home not wearing a body bag or suffering a debilitating injury made her one of the lucky ones. War was something she could brush aside simply by surviving it. But years after her honourable discharge, Nichole suffered MST (Military Sexual Trauma) and PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) in the form of debilitating nightmares, chronic sleep deprivation, and unrelenting thoughts of suicide. Her story of healing includes being a powerful voice for the #MeToo movement, earning an M.Ed. in Counseling & Human Relations, launching her app, Gratitude Morning, and authoring a Huffington Post article; I Served In Iraq. I Thought I Emerged Unscathed — But 20 Years Later, I'm Still Not The Same.

EMDR, or eye movement desensitization reprocessing, is a powerful tool for treating PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and various mental health disorders. Studies have shown that it can be more effective and works faster than CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), the mainstay treatment in therapy. A 2014 review of 24 studies concluded that EMDR could help relieve emotional distress after adverse experiences, work more quickly and effectively than trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and help ease somatic symptoms, like pain or muscle tension. The problem is that EMDR can be expensive and very difficult to access. That's why I was so excited to talk to Jeff Tejcek if virtual EMDR. Jeff has created a program where everyone can do EMDR in the comfort of their own home anytime they want at a fraction of the cost. Jeff Tejcek founded the Virtual EMDR self-guided therapy program after his own experience with EMDR changed his life completely. Diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) stemming from childhood abuse and neglect, Jeff struggled with anxiety, uncontrollable emotions, and self-esteem issues. He set out to transform the traditional EMDR therapy process so that anyone could use EMDR's life-transforming power regardless of their income or ability to access a therapist. Virtual EMDR eye movement therapy is a first-of-its-kind program that clients can use on their own and without the need for a therapist to be present. Starting with the simple goal of creating an online EMDR therapy program that might be able to help struggling people, he never dreamed he would make a career out of it, much less start an EMDR therapy company. Jeff's strong vision for online EMDR therapy has since been successful beyond his wildest expectations, and the Virtual EMDR company now routinely provides thousands of EMDR sessions each month, more than any other organization in the world. Virtual EMDR's programs are designed to change the lives of people struggling with PTSD and trauma, depression, addictions, anxiety, phobias, and grief and loss symptoms. Through his philanthropy work, Jeff has been able to provide completely free EMDR access to thousands of military veterans, law enforcement officers, first responders, and even front-line healthcare workers during the peak of the COVID 19 pandemic. Jeff is a husband, parent, American ex-patriot, and world traveller.

Let's get IT! CCS Season 14 has begun! Writer/Actor Sean Crampton joins JUST TALKING to discuss his new action thriller, The Stalking Fields. A film about a group of civilians who find themselves trapped in a PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) training program. What starts off as a reasonable therapeutic exercise turns into a dark government experiment gone out of control. A mix of screaming pauses throughout this film openly question your morality — when is it right? What is wrong? “Everyone carries PTSD in certain ways.” Crampton's father was a decorated Navy Seal for 27 years — you couldn't throw a rock and not hit a military family! A picturesque example of the modern nuclear family prompted Crampton to take a deeper look into the American Dream. But it was Hollywood's hyper-glamorized portrayal of combat that really fueled this film in a different direction to provide answers. HOW do we adequately address the reality of coming back home? Crampton's father, Cramton Sr. served 13 deployments for his country. According to the 2022 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans are at 57% higher risk of suicide than those who haven't served. What about retirement? How do we treat our Veterans during the transition? Can new technologies like Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) provide beneficial therapy? In the writer's room Sean Crampton and Jordan Wiseley both grew up in military families and director Ric Maddox, an army veteran, teamed up to make this thriller film. All three drew on their personal experiences to make this film as visceral as possible. The audience is definitely going to face a decision on which side they are willing to stalk for. After earning his masters in psychiatric social work and completing basic training, Shad Meshad worked at Fort Leavenworth Military Prison as a mental health officer. Most of the prisoners were Vietnam veterans, and he provided them with treatment and a means to reintegrate into society. After hearing the stories of veterans at Fort Leavenworth, Meshad decided he had to serve himself. He volunteered to serve in a KO team, which were the first psychiatric teams in American warfare. For five years, Captain Meshad was flown all around Vietnam to help evaluate and assist soldiers dealing with mental health issues. When he returned home, Meshad founded and directed the Vietnam Veterans Re-Socialization Unit at the VA Hospital in Los Angeles, California. It was his job to reshape the VA in a way that better served Vietnam vets. It was during this time that CPT Meshad would become one of the first people to study the disorder now known as PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). In 1979, Meshad founded the Vet Center Outreach Program, which created satellite centers that provide social and psychological services to any Veteran in order to help them transition back into civilian life. Now, Meshad is the president of the National Veterans Foundation, which he founded in 1985. The NVF helps veterans that are unable to reach a Vet Center with financial problems, mental health issues, VA benefits, employment, housing, and more. Brooks was found as a baby in a drain tile, grew up in foster home and a broken home. He joined the army in 2011 right before 9/11. He got the call to go to Iraq and loved it – he could be with his brothers and sisters and protect. He also got married to the love of his life and eventually had a son. After tragedy in the war and losing close friends, trauma started to set in. He found himself very angry, isolating from others and eventually suicidal. He was diagnosed with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and many other physical issues. In the midst of his darkest place, he was approached by a stranger who said she heard from the Holy Spirit about his PTSD and asked to pray for him. She led him to an event with Dr. Mike Hutchings who leads him to Christ and prays for Jesus to heal him. What transpired after this was a complete transformation and Brooks to begin walking in the destiny that God called him to. He has undeniable supernatural stories that are captivating and will have you in tears. He reunites with his foster family after having 6 years of his life without memories. The Reverend and the Reprobate sit down with Captain Wren C Thomas and Lori Vangilder-Preuss on the show this week. In 2013 Capt Thomas was taken captive by pirates off the coast of Nigeria. He tells the RevRepPodcast about how he survived the ordeal and the ongoing challenges he still faces. Captain Wren C. Thomas worked for 28 years as a merchant mariner, working his way to a Master's License to be the Captain of his vessel. Captain Thomas enjoyed working on the ocean highways until his ship was hijacked by modern day Nigerian pirates. He was taken hostage for 18 brutal days in the rainforest of the Niger River Delta. Captain Thomas also devotedly served his country as a U.S. Marine. He is a proud & grateful son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. (Credit: Title Town Publishing) Lori A. VanGilder-Preuss is a passionate editor, production manager and ghostwriter with TitleTown Publishing LLC. Prior to publishing, she was a prolific technical writer within public safety for 35 years and enjoys producing within the survivor and true crime space because of that background. Lori has a Bachelor's degree in Adult Education with a minor in Curriculum Development. She lives in Florida with her husband and son.(Credit: Title Town Publishing) Kidnapped and held for ransom for 18 days by Nigerian pirates, Captain Wren Thomas suffered horrors, bringing to life the reality of modern-day pirating. Faith carried him during and after captivity, a beloved PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) service dog named Beaux, eventually saving his life once again. In this first-person survivor account, Captain Thomas brings readers into the ocean, onto his ship as he and his team fight off the pirates, and ultimately within the captivity camp. Devastatingly clear as it is inspirational, Capt. Thomas warns the world with his story of danger on the ocean highways, which gives us a rare glimpse of what it takes to survive. In this episode, guest Shaka Senghor shares his inspiring story from incarceration to becoming a two times bestselling author, influencer and one of Oprah's “SuperSoul 100” – teaching lessons of redemption and vulnerability to the masses. He grew up spending 19 years in prison, seven of them in solitary confinement. Through reflection and writing, he later came to understand his story of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). At age 17, he was shot multiple times, and also has two brothers who were shot, one of whom ended up paralyzed. At the same time, he takes full responsibility for the death of another, which sent him to prison. Shaka is grateful for the many “incredible mentors” who believed in him, and offered suggested readings for moving forward. Topics covered in this interview: The reflective time in solitary confinement that helped him create his first bestseller, Writing My Wrongs, Life, Death, and Redemption in an American Prisonhttps://www.amazon.com/Writing-My-Wrongs-Redemption-American/dp/1101907312. How being a father impacted his second book that just came out in January, 2022, Letters to the Sons of Society: A Father's Invitation to Love, Honesty, and Freedom https://www.amazon.com/Letters-Sons-Society-Fathers-Invitation/dp/059323801X. Here is a review of that book by The Chicago Tribune: “If you want to peer into a heart, if you want a story of brokenness and healing and fury and redemption and humanity, if you want to envision a different, better way forward, Senghor's letters are a beautiful place to begin.” Changing the narrative for Black men, into worthiness, beyond being a provider and protector. Dr. Alfiee also noted research showing that Black men are the single most present ethnic group to their children even when they are the non-custodial parent. Shaka being “an authentic survivor,” loved up by “brothers” who saw value in him in prison, and how he now mentors other “young brothers”--living what he talks about, and challenges them while winning. Shaka shares three ways to instill a greater sense of self-love: Journaling, and start by asking: “How did I get here, to this point in life?” ”Meditate to get it straight,” which can be “horrifying” at first to sit with one's self. Personal affirmations, to think into existence what you desire. Running “a unicorn startup,” that went from $0 revenue to $7 billion valuation in 20 months, by helping build culture in corporations. Ryan “Birdman” Parrott was a trained sniper in his SEAL team. After transitioning out of the SEAL teams, there was an assumption that they were safe, back home on American soil. On January 2nd, 2019, Birdman received a call from a teammate, stating that his SEAL team partner David R. Metcalf had taken his own life. As he navigated his own grief, Birdman was inspired to do more than simply mourn. The issues facing war tattered and battle worn veterans is far beyond just a label of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Birdman recognized that despite the well intentioned non-profits to help these vets, we continue to lose thousands of military members and first responders every year. Army Veteran Daniel Somers wrote this in his suicide note in 2013: “I am left with basically nothing. Too trapped in a war to be at peace, too damaged to be at war.” As with Birdman's observations, Daniel's words suggest that there is a whole body element to post traumatic stress that is being missed. Birdman reached out to a physician to discuss human performance in people with trauma. His hypothesis was to test these individuals on a physiological level and obtain a baseline. Birdman has assembled a world class team of Physicians, Ph.D.'s, Phycologists, Physiatrists, Sports Physiologists, and former Special Operators to make up the Human Performance Project. The mission is to create a manual to guide the tactical population, enabling them to thrive upon entry, during and post service. Ken & Eric are honored to host Birdman on the GCP. In Episode 7 of The Jim Gale show, guest Matt Guedes brings awareness, compassion and great hope to the traumas our veterans and first responders, gold stars and their families face. These “American heroes” get great support through the 2,300-acre Camp Freedom in Pennsylvania, where Matt works as executive director, paying it forward to bring the healing powers of the outdoors to those who are disabled or challenged by their traumas. Free to all, the camp offers fishing, hunting, hiking, walking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing activities–or, as he says: “Anything outdoors we do it, and we do it with a purpose.” Matt Guedes: “We're seeing lives literally saved through outdoor adventures.” Co-hosts Jim Gale and Matthew Britt, moved by Matt's insights on the impact of trauma to our 4-million plus disabled veterans, and untold numbers of first responders, offer insights and solutions, including the possibilities of collaborating to start a Freedom Farm Academy onsite. Learn more about Freedom Farm Academy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rNdlAuqb3A Jim suggests, and Matt Guedes agrees, that collaborating with The Freedom Farm Academy could provide a way to build more community at Camp Freedom. It could also potentially allow veterans to use their continuing education funds to invest in learning how to create and manage a food forest, and oversee a profitable business. “It's a perfect alignment in every way–to teach people how to be free, and grow food in the midst of a food chain disaster, is a good business to be in,” Jim shares. Isolation is the number one issue facing those disabled by trauma, according to Matt Guedes. Topics covered in this interview: –Overview of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and its impact on our veterans and first responders. –Matt Guedes shares that a trauma specialist taught him to see trauma, not as a disorder, which has a concept of permanence and finality to it. Instead, by focusing on trauma as an injury (which can actually be traced in a brain scan as such), hope is created–for injuries can be healed. – Matt Guedes:”Trauma is real and it has an effect on our mental, on our physical and on our spiritual lives, and it has an effect on all of us.” Jim: Recommends the book, Molecules of Emotion: The Science Behind Mind-Body Medicine:(https://www.amazon.com/Molecules-Emotion-Science-Mind-Body-Medicine/dp/0684846349) –Three negative patterns of dealing with trauma: isolation, drugs (which sometimes start with a prescription) or alcohol use, which then lead to desperation. –Ways to shift: Fight the impulse to isolate, get outside, find one or two trusted friends with whom to speak. “It's the relationships that give you the sustainability to get off that train wreck you may be on,” Matt Guedes stresses. –Self-care, serving others and contributing, as a way out of depression, are also discussed. Trauma can take different forms. One can speak of individual trauma, ancestral trauma, and collective trauma. All of these are happening on different, yet interconnected levels of (all!) our lives. Historically, the word ‘trauma' comes from the Greek, and literally means ‘wound' or can be taken in its active form of ‘to wound'. Although originally the word was taken to mean physical wounding, Sigmund Freud was the first (in his book Beyond the Pleasure Principle of 1920) who would use it in his psychological practice with patients to describe their psychological wounding. Currently, trauma is often defined by its response of fear, anxiety, a feeling of overwhelm, and symptoms like PTSD (Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder).In other words, trauma is the response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual's ability to cope, causes feelings of helplessness, diminishes their sense of self and their ability to feel a full range of emotions and experiences. It is also important to recognise that trauma does not discriminate and is pervasive throughout the world. A World Mental Health survey conducted by the World Health Organization found that at least a third of the more than 125,000 people surveyed in 26 different countries had experienced trauma. While there are no objective criteria to evaluate which events will cause post-trauma symptoms, circumstances typically involve the loss of control, betrayal, abuse of power, helplessness, pain, confusion and/or loss. The event need not rise to the level of war, natural disaster, nor personal assault to affect a person profoundly and alter their experiences. Traumatic situations that cause post-trauma symptoms vary quite dramatically from person to person. Indeed, it is very subjective and it is important to bear in mind that it is defined more by its response than its trigger. In this episode of Science & Wisdom LIVE, 3 experts - Deb Dana, Rob Preece, and Dr. David Robinson-Morris - discuss the nature of trauma and how we can deal with it in a skilful way that is healing and transformative. The dialogue is moderated by Scott Snibbe, who is also host and producer of a Skeptic's Path to Enlightenment, and will focus on topics such as the connection between psychological healing and contemplative practices, how to understand trauma through the lenses of polyvagal theory, and the relationship between individual and collective trauma.

It's sometimes at our lowest moments that transformational doors open. But you have to stay open and willing, which is what our guest on this episode of She Turned Entrepreneur did – with amazing results. Rebecca Packard's career as an Emergency Medical Technician was right on track, serving people in need just as she had always planned. But after 15 years, her body and psyche had other plans. Overnight this dynamic, empowered mother of two found herself sidelined on the couch, crippled by pain and anxiety. Her world grew smaller and smaller as specialist after specialist failed to locate the source of her ailments. How did Rebecca dig herself out? Through curiosity and a willingness to seek help in the form of alternative therapies. Five years later, she is an international speaker and healer whose thriving practice treats people (most especially entrepreneurs!) through a number of different psycho-spiritual and body-work modalities. Learn about Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Emotional Code, Angelic Reiki and other tips for coming back from the kind of post-traumatic stress (PTSD) that threatened to take over Rebecca's life. She also has suggestions for simple ways that we can head trouble off before it spins out of control, through being intentional and using methods like tapping to calm our nervous systems when the world's worries crowd in. Rebecca teaches us a simple method for breaking free of fight-or-flight stress. Would you like to create calm in chaos? Click here to get started with a look at the many resources Rebecca has to offer at her website. Click here to listen to, rate and review this or previous episodes. Here are key takeaways from the conversation:· Sometimes out of great challenge comes great insight – and transformation.· Keeping an open mind pays off. Rebecca had no way of knowing that her decision to seek alternative medical treatment would result in a complete career shift.· Redefinition can be a good thing. Rebecca's life goal was to help people, but it turned out that being an EMT was just the start of that journey.· Pandemic has forced many people to pivot, sometimes reluctantly. Rebecca is here to say: Keep the faith. Good things lie beyond even the darkest of times! · Did you know that entrepreneurs hold pain and trauma in predictable parts of the body?· Is your business bleeding into everything? Create a disciplined calendar, including blocks devoted exclusively to family and self-care – then adhere to it!· The more we practice self-soothing methods like tapping, the more our nervous systems start to integrate a sense of calm and well-being, even in moments of high anxiety. Here's a quick look into the episode:· All about Rebecca's circuitous journey, which started with a 15-year career as an Emergency Medical Technician that was humming along – until it came to a total halt.· As the result of crippling PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), Rebecca went overnight from being an active, ambitious professional in the service space to completely couch-bound (outside of doctors' appointments three to five times a week).· Rebecca was down but not out. She rallied to find recovery tools, including an introduction to EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and Emotion Code. Where pain and medications didn't work, these alternative therapies freed her from inherited emotion that had locked her up.· Amazed and impressed by her results, there was no turning back for Rebecca. With her husband's encouragement, she embarked on a journey through the healing space.· Rebecca was felt beyond bleak, but by taking one step forward at a time she came to a place where the suffering and loss not only made sense but in time proved helpful in the healing she now affords others.· How Rebecca's Sessions Work: o They are conducted over Zoom.o Together you do a “gathering clearing” to settle into an open space.o Angelic Reiki is the first healing tool Rebecca deploys.o Emotion Code comes next, incorporating kinesiology and Chinese medicine to track emotions that are causing mental and physical pain.o Release occurs in myriad ways and multiple efforts, depending on the individual.· Actionable healing tips for entrepreneurs:o Tip #1: Schedule your life, including personal and family time. Then stick to it.o Tip #2: Don't be afraid to get help. Ask fellow entrepreneurs who have been there and can help you ease stress and anxiety through their shared experience.o Tip #3: Find a mentor who is a good fit.· Actionable tips for calming yourself down on those go-go-go days:o Tip #1: Start off your day by both affirming yourself and consciously letting go of control. Remind yourself: Things will unfold today exactly as they should!o Tip #2: Place your index finger on your clavicle, then lay the other four fingers down next to it. Tap the meaty spot between your middle and ring fingers in moments of stress or overwhelm and your whole nervous system will calm down!· Recommended Reading: o "The Entrepreneur Roller Coaster: Why Now Is the Time to #Join the Ride," by Darren Hardy. About Rebecca:A leading accredited preventative trauma care teacher and educator, self-help instructor, Youtuber, Podcaster, speaker and Live Happy ambassador, Rebecca works with entrepreneurs and service-focused individuals to scale, adapt and pivot for whole life wellness and success. Mary Constance is an adoptee from Ohio. Mary is preparing to walk across America to bring attention to the inequity faced by adoptees in seeking access to our original birth certificates. Mentioned in the show: Ohio adoptee access to records: https://odh.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odh/know-our-programs/vital-statistics/Adoption-File-Information/Adoption-File-Information The Chosen Baby: a pro-adoption childrens books by Valentina P Wasson, designed to help adoptive parents explain adoption to adopted children. ACOA: Adult Children of Alcoholics. adultchildren.org A support group for adult children of alcoholics Generational Trauma: a fairly new field that explores trauma passed from one generation to another. Also known as intergenerational trauma and transgenerational trauma Life Gap: a term created by an adoptee to refer to the time between birth and adoption, where few if any records are available to adoptees. Many of us deeply feel the absence of this information, of a time when we were cared for in an institutional or foster care situation. ACE: Adverse Childhood Experience. While Adverse Childhood Experiences have long been acknowledged as a source of lasting trauma, few measures include being given up for adoption as a trauma. The closest many assessments come is to have losing a family member on the list of recognized trauma. PTSD: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, is characterized by sleep disturbance, intrusive thoughts, anxiety and depression. A persons nervous system is often stuck in high gear, causing a person to be hyper alert at all times. Or, they may find themselves in flight, freeze or fawn. Therapy can be very helpful. Many people find EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and Prolonged Exposure Therapy helpful. Agoraphobia: an anxiety disorder that causes a person to be fearful of places where they feel they can't escape. This may cause people to stay only in places where they feel secure, like home. Therapy can be very helpful. Mental Health Resources: If you have health insurance, you can contact your provider to find information about the services available to you. If you do not have insurance, you can contact www.nami.org for information about resources, or contact your local department of health. If you are a student, your school may offer services. Mental health services can be difficult to locate, though there are now online therapists who can be helpful. Always check if a provider is licensed, and ask if they will provide services on a sliding scale. Some Womens health clinics offer sliding scale mental health services to women and children. On this edition of Parallax Views, journalist Jonathan M. Katz joins us to discuss his fascinating new book Gangsters of Capitalism: Smedley Butler, The Marines, and the Making and Breaking of America's Empire. For the uninitiated, Maj. Gen. Smedley Darlington Butler is one of only a few men to receive a Medal of Honor twice for his service in the military. Later on in life he became a voice for disenfranchised veterans and a prominent antiwar figure who claimed that in his years prior he had served as a "gangster of capitalism". Butler wrote the famous antiwar short book War is a Racket to expound on the antiwar views that dominated the latter portion of his life. Katz discusses all of this as well as Butler's dark legacy in Haiti, the ways in which Butler couldn't be neatly categorized politically as anything other than a patriotic defender of troops and veterans (and how the Communist Party's Earl Browder summed that up), his contempt for the Italian fascist Mussolini, PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and moral injury, the Business Plot, the Bonus Marches and Butler's support for them (vs. Gen. Patton), and zombies. Yes, zombies. How does that factor into the story. Well, you'll have to find out by listening to the conversation but the mention of Butler and his time in Haiti should give you a clue! In the second half of the program, journalist Liza Featherstone, author of such books as Diving Desire: Focus Groups and the Culture of Consultation and False Choices: The Faux Feminism of Hillary Rodham Clinton, joins us to discuss her Jacobin obituary of the recently passed diplomat Madeline Albright. Although Albright has been well-remembered in many obituaries since her passing on Mar 23, 2022, Featherstone took a more critical view of Albright and her career which included time as the 20th United States Ambassador to the United Nations and 64th United States Secretary of State. Albright infamously said that sanctions against Iraq, which harmed many innocent Iraqi civilians (including children), was worth it in a 60 Minutes interview. She also held to a foreign policy that conflicted greatly with Colin Powell and his Powell Doctrine, instead believing that U.S. military might should not go to waste. We cover all of this as well as Albright's consulting group and its relation to the pandemic and vaccine apartheid, the hagiography around Albright since her passing, girl boss feminism and its discontents, and much, much more!

We're witnessing the largest war in Europe since World War II, as Russia invades Ukraine. At the moment, U.S. troops are not directly involved in the conflict, but it has got us thinking about the healthcare that military personnel receive, particularly after they're discharged and rejoin civilian life. There is no one better to talk with about veterans' healthcare than our guest Suzanne Gordon. Suzanne Gordon is an award-winning journalist and author. She has written for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, and many other publications. She is also the author or co-author of 22 books including, most recently, Wounds of War: How the VA Delivers Health, Healing, and Hope to the Nation's Veterans. She also wrote The Battle for Veterans' Healthcare: Dispatches from the Frontlines of Policy Making and Patient Care. Show Notes Most of us who aren't veterans don't know much about the Veterans Administration. Why should Medicare for All supporters learn more about the VA? The Veterans Health Administration (one of three branches of the Department of Veterans Affairs) is the largest healthcare system in the country, and the only publicly funded, fully integrated and coordinated healthcare system in the country. While Medicare for All is a payment method only, the VA is both a payer and a provider, which allows them to create innovative new models of care. Suzanne reminds us that the VA essentially invented geriatric care, put PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) on the map in response to the Vietnam War, and developed models of palliative care. The VA is also a major hub for healthcare professional teaching system. It's also the biggest research hub after the National Institutes of Health. Finally, the VA serves as backup to the civilian healthcare system in times of emergency. Accessing care from the VA is not automatic for veterans. They have to meet certain thresholds, which essentially results in the VA caring for the sickest and poorest veterans. Then - despite the fact that this is an expensive population to treat - the VA provides those patients with better quality care at a lower cost than average Americans with private insurance receive. The VA is both a publicly-funded and publicly delivered healthcare system, much like the way healthcare is provided through the NHS in the UK. This is what the right likes to call "Socialized Medicine." The VA model allows more coordinated care and innovation that are nearly impossible in the fragmented, profit-driven private healthcare system. You might even say it's a model for a healthcare for all system nationally. Behind the Covert Campaign to Privatize the VA Like any well-functioning, efficient public program, profit-driven forces are trying to privatize the VA. Much like efforts to privatize Medicare and public schools, these folks are using the same playbook to privatize and profit off of the VA. They claim the public system doesn't work, they blame public employees, and assert that the private sector is the only way to provide the service well. They advocate for legislation that moves more people into private sector services, starving the public services of resources. VA privatization efforts originated with funding from the Koch Brothers. They're joined by the pharmaceutical industry who doesn't want to have to negotiate drug prices with the VA. (Medicare is legally prohibited from negotiating drug prices, and Pharma has fought every effort to change that, because it essentially allows them to set prices as high as they like.) Healthcare profiteers all want a chance at the pot of gold that is the VA Health Administration. They've spent millions to infiltrate the right wing media sphere as well as the mainstream media like the New York Times, NPR and Washington Post, and discredit the VA. The VA is the most accountable healthcare system in the country.
In this episode, Philip shares how all his medical degrees might have helped his family and daughter through her life's transition to death, it never prepared him for his grief as a bereaved father.Dr. Philip Lister is an adult and child psychiatrist in private practice in New York City. He received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine and moved to New York to enter psychiatric training. Trained in adult and child psychiatry at the Payne Whitney Clinic of Weill Cornell Medical Center, Dr. Lister joined the voluntary faculty there supervising residents and teaching medical students. Overlapping with residency and fellowship, he trained in adult and child psychoanalysis at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. He then joined the faculty at the Psychoanalytic Center, participating in the basic course surveying the work of Freud. Most recently, he has trained with MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies). That training prepared him to be a team of therapists offering research participants MDMA-assisted psychotherapy in a Phase 3 study to determine whether MDMA will provide a new, more effective treatment for entrenched, treatment-resistant PTSD [Post Traumatic Stress Disorder]. The research is currently underway.Dr. Lister is here with us today as a father and author of A Short Good Life, and he shares Liza's story of facing death.Support the show (https://healgrief.org/donations/)
There is no one way to look at PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) there are 636,120 ways to have PTSD. However, those of us who have not been diagnosed with PTSD can learn a lot from those who have served our combat veterans on how to deal with stress and trauma, especially in these uncertain times. One of our Great Conversation leaders introduced us to Dr. Dan Libby, Executive Director of the Veterans Yoga Project (VYP), a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to support recovery and resilience among our veterans, families, and communities. He and his organization are working with hundreds, if not thousands, each week, helping them to navigate a VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) world. Here is a quote from Dr. Libby based on an early recognition of the power of yoga on one of his early clients: “A turning point in the founding of VYP occurred before the fourth “mindful yoga” class I had ever taught. One of my veterans approached me and told me that he had stopped taking his sleep medications, because now he could meditate to go to sleep. That moment was profound. The pride with which he told me this was palpable. It is as if he were no longer a broken man who could not manage the simplest of human functions; instead, he was empowered to use his own mind, his own breath, his own body to live and sleep, in a way that brought him more ease and more joy. He practiced every day. Eventually, he went on to lead morning meditations in his own community at a local yoga center.” We have a Great Conversation around the unique benefits of yoga in training the body and mind, eventually training yourself to be at peace with what you find in any moment. I came away with the sense that if I could get to that state, as a leader, I could see more clearly the people around me and the circumstances that were confronting them with empathy and without judgement. In a sense, we wake up, freed from emotional constructs that can lead us astray. Dr. Libby is much more eloquent. Enjoy the conversation.

What is it about the mere thought of standing in front of an audience of strangers that leaves most of us with high anxiety? Dr. Harry Croft is considered by many to be one of the world's leading authorities on PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), having evaluated over 7,000 veterans during his career. Dr. Croft tackles what continues to be among the biggest fears among Americans and beyond: The Fear of Public Speaking. Listen as he reveals the Top 5 Ways to Overcome the Fear of Public Speaking!
Mirsad Solakovic grew up in a Bosnian Muslim family during the 1980s, in a country where people from a range of different ethnic groups and religions lived side by side. This harmony was shattered for Mirsad at the age of 13, when his Serbian teacher turned up at school one day in military uniform and pointed a gun at him. As war descended on his town, he and his family were rounded up and Mirsad was singled out and tortured by that very same teacher. They were then sent to a concentration camp on the school grounds as part of a wave of ethnic cleansing. They escaped to England as refugees, but Mirsad was by now experiencing severe PTSD – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He found it hard to adjust, suffered bullying and wouldn't speak, until two of his new teachers asked if he would talk about his life in the school assembly. It would be a life-changing moment for Mirsad. He's written a book about his experiences called The Boy Who Said Nothing. Well my loves, school has started here and already we are getting covid exposure emails, the news is filled with fourth wave worries, and I'm feeling much of the familiar worry, frustration and fear that I felt last year at this time. So I've decided to pause some of the upcoming interviews I have planned, and instead, I'm going to re-run the series I created in July 2020 - Meditation & Emotional Resilience. Can't hurt to remind our minds and soothe our hearts as we ride the waves of fall 2021. This class originally aired in July 2020: Oh, loves. It has been a year thus far, hasn't it?! Murder hornets, pandemics, and long-overdue demands for social justice have asked much of our emotional resiliency. As I've worked with students to navigate these times, I've realized that I'm relying on much of my experience in teaching mindfulness for PTSD {Post Traumatic Stress Disorder}. For several years, I was lucky enough to work alongside brilliant psychotherapists and social workers as we offered tools to those working through PTSD and substance abuse. While we won't all receive a formal diagnosis of PTSD, most of us are working through the experiences of trauma in our daily lives. All of us can apply specific mindfulness techniques to help us navigate these tricky times with as much emotional resiliency as possible. The goal is not to avoid hard times, but to know without doubt that you can survive these times. When we are feeling the impact of traumatic stress one of the primary feelings is one of powerlessness. Therefore, the antidote is to begin to regain a sense of power during our days. This meditation series will look at some of the key steps towards regaining that sense of power and learning to be more comfortable with the acknowledgement that there is very little we can actually control. Let's start with presence. Get here, in this moment, now. Join me for today's episode of The Mindful Minute as we explore what it takes to build emotional resilience through meditation.
