Hormones play a crucial role in both men's and women's health. I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Dr. Pamela Smith on the Hustle and Flowchart podcast about this important topic, especially focusing on male hormones and how they affect entrepreneurs like us. Dr. Smith shared valuable insights on hormonal balance and its connection to our health, energy, and ability to stay productive in our busy lives. Let's dive into the key points we discussed in the episode. What The Episode Is AboutIn this episode, Dr. Pamela Smith sheds light on the importance of hormones for both men and women. Most of us often neglect understanding how vital hormones are in maintaining our memory, preventing diseases, supporting our immune systems, and overall physical and mental well-being. Dr. Smith not only talks about male hormones but also explains the interconnectedness of male and female hormonal health. Alongside hormone replacement for men, she delves into the role of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, cortisol, and thyroid hormones in the body.Importance of HormonesHormones help us think clearly, feel good, and remain motivated. Aging naturally affects hormone levels, but several factors like the environment, toxins, and stress can disrupt hormonal balance. As Dr. Smith points out, many men in their 30s now have low testosterone levels, which used to be uncommon. This hormonal imbalance influences our physical health, mental clarity, and energy levels.Estrogen's Role in MenThough predominantly seen as a female hormone, estrogen is also present and necessary in men. It supports memory, bone structure, and prevents erectile dysfunction. However, Dr. Smith warns that too much estrogen in men can increase the risk of heart disease and prostate cancer. It's crucial for men to maintain estrogen at normal levels, neither too high nor too low.Understanding Progesterone and TestosteroneProgesterone in men supports nerve health and hormone balance. It also helps prevent high levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which can enlarge the prostate and increase heart disease risk. Testosterone is misunderstood as just the sexual interest hormone. Dr. Smith emphasizes that it is essential for energy, muscle mass, lowering cholesterol, and supporting overall mental health. The Impact of Aging and Toxins on HormonesAs we age, hormonal dysfunction increases due to various external factors. The rise of toxins like BPAs and microplastics affects testosterone levels. Julie highlighted surprising statistics: a woman who breaks a hip has a 50% chance of not walking for a year, and a man, 50% chance of dying within a year, underscoring the seriousness of bone health in men which is influenced by hormones.Personalized Medicine ApproachThe power of personalized medicine cannot be overstated. Unlike conventional treatments, personalized medicine precisely targets individual needs for optimal health results. The science Dr. Smith practices tailors for individuals— as evident with hormones, where no two patients receive identical treatments. This approach ensures balance in hormone replacement and nutrition. The Importance of Thyroid and InsulinDr. Smith outlines the importance of the thyroid, the "conductor" organ for our entire system. Insulin balance is paramount too. High or low levels are common, but the key markers, like fasting blood sugar and insulin levels, are crucial for preventing diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. The connection between testosterone regulation and insulin balance was also elucidated.Resources from Dr. Pamela SmithWebsiteBooksEmail Dr. Pamela Smith at faafm63@yahoo.com

These farmers spend a full year getting to know DTN's Pamela Smith as they work through weekly calls and check-ins, sharing their stories and their seasons with the broader farm community. Today, we're sitting down with Quint Pottinger, a farmer from Bourbon Country in Kentucky who's been growing an unconventional row crop operation alongside his dad's since 2012. We'll talk with Quint about his path back to the farm, which included experiments with tomatoes, feed corn for deer, and even a challenging dance with rye. We'll dig into his strategy for financing his operation, which includes bringing in outside investors while maintaining majority ownership over the family business. Then we'll dive deep into Quint's deep dedication to not only growing the farm economically and protecting the environmental sustainability of the land, but also to nurturing his community — through economic investments in his employees, his local town of New Haven, and in the way he thinks about markets and opportunities in the future.

You may have seen the video of a 101 year old veteran who got to meet his great great granddaughter for the first time. After World War 2, we brought many Nazi's here. We set scientists loose in NASA and gave them jobs in the intelligence services. We owe our veterans more than that. The people who spent their lives defending our country deserve more than the imported attitudes and ideals, more than the wars of choice like the supporters of Hamas who attempted to climb the fence at the White House. What does God's Word say? James 3:13-1813 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.Episode 1,346 Links:Following last night's violent pro-Palestine protest outside the White House in which rioters assaulted police and tried breaking down the fence, the @DCPoliceDept chief of police Pamela Smith said it was mostly peaceful.Overnight, pro-Palestine rioters tried breaking down a protective barrier set up at the White House. These farmers spend a full year getting to know DTN's Pamela Smith as they work through weekly calls and check-ins, sharing their stories and their seasons with the broader farm community. The second 2023 farmers we're checking in with are Chandra and Mike Langseth from the edge of the Red River Valley in Barney, North Dakota. They've been farming for nearly a decade, through more than one challenging year and the long transition as the couple takes over the farm from Mike's father. In addition to Mike's working full-time on the farm, Chandra tackles scouting and agronomy on-farm while also teaching precision ag and agronomy at the local university. Today, we'll chat with the Langseths' about the season they've had, what they foresee in the upcoming harvest, and how the farm transition is going. We'll also talk tech, hearing about how the two are thinking about strategic decisions in the farm's future, and hearing about ongoing experiments at the farm. Then we'll dig into their vision for the future; and how they see their farm evolving in the face of unpredictable weather, commodity prices, and interest rates.
Today, I have Pamela Smith, a super interesting and inspiring guest! Pamela is President of the Reynolds Ladies Club. If you're not familiar with the organization, you are at the right place to learn! If you are, you may not be familiar with everything the group is doing, and now has well over 500 members! Despite living in Georgia, and even Athens, for a number of years, we have not successfully converted her to a Dawg, but there's still time! She'll tell us about her professional career that included teaching fifth graders, including what she loved about teaching and the few things she did not. We'll get her take and ideas of what has happened in the field of education, since the pandemic and subsequent lockdown, the possible long-term effects and some things that we need to do. She will tell us about the Reynolds Ladies Club, or RLC, a little of its history and growth, how it was impacted by the pandemic and how she became involved, not only as a member, but as a leader of the organization! We'll talk about its recent rapid expansion, some of the events and very importantly, how they live up to their mission of care, concern and kindness. We will talk about how the organization is so much more than a social club and the ways they help build a stronger local community through support of a variety of causes and non-profits. This powerful group supports each other and the community in so many ways! Of course, you will hear what "lured" her to the lake and we even take a few minutes to talk about her favorite travel destinations! Show Summary: "So my sister was diagnosed with LCIS, and there were areas of concern on her breast. The doctor recommended 'watch and wait' or mastectomy, and she was in turmoil. I asked her to take progesterone hormones, and after a month, she went back for her MRI, and the abnormal cells were undetectable." Conventional medicine entails treating patients already in the end stages of their diseases. However, even if this is the norm, it pays to ask if there is anything we can do to correct or arrest an illness before it becomes chronic or fatal. What if we can prevent sickness? Are there destructive lifestyle habits or seismic life shifts that are worth noting? What other factors contributed to today's results? When it comes to health, these are the underlying questions that beg for answers. Our guest, Sharon Miller Keller, is a nurse practitioner and gives custom consultations on female hormones at Provo Health. With a long history in patient care, she gained hands-on medical experience in the Navy and later became a surgical oncology nurse for 17 years. After raising her kids, she also finished the Family Nurse Practitioner program at Gonzaga University. In this episode, she is our in-house resource on Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy. On top of real-life experiences, Sharon shares her in-depth research on why hormone supplementation could spell the health breakthrough you need. Live life's goodness by having the right hormones.
