No matter the country, no matter the peak, there are some things that connect us all. We all breathe. We all dream. We all bleed. You see things differently when you're standing on top of the world. In 2018 Chris Bombardier became the first mountaineer with hemophilia to successfully climb the Seven Summits, the tallest mountain on each of the seven continents. But that was just the beginning of his journey. What he saw on his adventures, both from the mountain tops and in the surrounding villages, inspired and changed him. In the years since his climbs, Chris channeled my spirit and ambition towards a new frontier: advocacy and global healthcare through my work at Save One Life. Produced by BloodStream Media. The Final Summit was also made possible by support from Genentech. Visit GenentechHemophilia.com to take a look at how they are supporting the hemophilia community.

It's hard enough to climb Mount Everest, the world's highest peak. Now try to do it with a life-threatening blood disorder like Hemophilia B that can cause serious internal bleeding. That's exactly what Colorado-based mountaineer Chris Bombardier attempted to do in 2017 when he produced a documentary called, "Bombardier Blood." Recently, Chris spoke with Bloodworks 101 producer John Yeager and unpacked the message of the documentary, and shared the reason why he sought not only to climb Everest, but the rest of the world's Seven Summits.
BOMBARDIER BLOOD is a documentary about a special mountain climber named Chris Bombardier, who suffers from hemophilia, the severe bleeding disorder. Chris travels to South America, North America, Africa, Europe, Antarctica, Australia, and Asia to raise awareness for the disorder and to be the first hemophiliac to climb the highest peaks in each continent. The documentary takes viewers through the history of hemophilia and through Chris's life, including all the obstacles and accomplishments he's had. Hemophilia affects about one in every 10,000 births. Without infusion of blood clotting medicine called Factor, hemophilia can result in uncontrolled bleeding, joint deformity and death.
Chris Bombardier was born with a severe form of Hemophilia B. He was also an active, athletic kid, passionate about baseball. As a young adult, Chris became passionate about mountain climbing and set a goal of completing the Seven Summits (summiting the highest mountain on each continent). The recently released documentary, Bombardier Blood, follows Chris’s summit of Mt. Everest and provides a glimpse into what it’s like to live with hemophilia in Nepal, highlighting the disparity in health outcomes, depending on access to healthcare and to factor. Chris is now the Executive Director of Save One Life, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering individuals and families affected by bleeding disorders in developing countries through direct financial assistance and access to medical treatment. Bombardier Blood follows the journey of man with a severe bleeding disorder, determined to summit the world's highest 7 mountains [Interview with Chris Bombardier and documentarian Patrick James Lynch] Chris Bombardier talks about the motivation behind risking his life in the making of Bombardier Blood, how his family supported him and how he continues to redefine his mission. Documentarian Patrick James Lynch, shares his own life experience that moved him to dedicating his film career to giving a voice to the unheard. Before the Bombardier Blood interview: Rob and I talk a lot about what we admire in people and what we can do to emulate those qualities. We also spend a lot of time talking about the best way to spend our own short time on this planet (mostly because of my intense anxiety about dying, without having accomplished anything of real value to the world, but I digress). In every conversation, despite the conversational tangents about website content and podcast topics, the root of what brings us the most happiness is in the moments we feel like we've made somebodies day, just a little bit better. When we hear your stories about how the podcast got you through a rough patch or that Tim's movie reviews bring you a sense of community, that really matters to us. I'll admit though, we struggle with not feeling like we're doing enough. We talk about leaving our secure jobs and instead going to work for a non-profit or moving to Africa and digging wells for water. But we to be honest, it's hard to take those risks. It's scary to lose security and so, we continue to just admire. Leading up to the interview: Needless to say, we felt quite a bit of pressure sitting down with two people who are so wholly living in a way that serves the world for better. Two people who have taken their obstacle, and instead made it a job and a mission. Two people we truly admire. He is the executive director at Save One Life, an international nonprofit that assists people with hemophilia, where care is limited. Then, Chris reaches out to award-winning filmmaker and global health advocate Patrick Lynch and their connection is instant. Patrick also lives with hemophilia and spends much of his professional career advocating for many important causes. Their mutual passions were the perfect mix to bring Bombardier Blood to life. I wasn't exactly sure how it would come off, but I needed to know. Was becoming the first person to climb to the top of 6 giant mountains and then traveling to and summiting Mount Everest over the course of 50+ days, whilst infusing their blood with clotting medication enough? The pursuit of success and meaning and purpose is such a tricky thing and I needed to know if me (probably getting trapped on the side of a mountain and Rob having to send a rescue team) accomplishing an amazing physical feat would somehow bring that desired sense of success and completionism. We hope you enjoy Chris and Patrick as much as we did. Check out the trailer for Bombardier Blood and find it on streaming now! [embed]http://vimeo.com/435815756[/embed]

I have never felt so emasculated as when I spoke with Chris Bombardier about his new documentary Bombardier Blood. Bombardier at the time of the filming of this documentary had already climbed five of the seven's world largest mountains. What makes this documentary unique is that Bombardier is a hemophiliac. According to the Mayo Clinic, Hemophilia is a rare disorder in which your blood doesn't clot normally because it lacks sufficient blood-clotting proteins (clotting factors). What I found out thanks to Bombardier and director, Patrick James Lynch is that there are two types of hemophilia. Type A and Type B. Bombardier has Type A, while Lynch has Type B. The difference between the two is the type of proteins that are effected via the disorder. Bombardier was an aspiring baseball player, who once his hopes of going pro didn't pan out, he decided to become an adventurer. We spoke with Bombardier and Lynch about hemophilia, climbing Everest and what is next both for him and Lynch. Welcome to a conversation with the incredible Chris Bombardier. Chris was born with a severe form of haemophilia, one of a variety of bleeding disorders affecting people around the world. Growing up in the back garden of the mountains, in the mile-high city of Denver, Colorado, Chris did not let his condition hold him back from his passions. From a young age he played baseball and threw himself into skiing, ski mountaineering, rock climbing and mountaineering. Yet being born in a developed country with access to good healthcare doesn’t mean it's been an easy ride. Staying healthy involves a constant onslaught of infusions and regular bleeds, sometimes involving hospitalisation and always involving pain. Chris also has a needle phobia, which adds another layer of struggle when it comes to his treatment needs. Through the years he’s battled with depression which is rooted in feeling different from others, and meeting other communities of people living with bleeding disorders has helped him move past this. Inspirationally, Chris took his love of mountaineering to new heights, quite literally, when he decided to climb all Seven Summits, starting with Kilimanjaro in 2011 and culminating in a gruelling expedition to the roof of the world, Everest, in 2019. Driving his achievements in the mountains is the singular hope to raise more awareness for others around the world who were not so fortunate in the postcode lottery; those born with bleeding disorders in countries like India and Nepal, who face the fate of misdiagnosis, disability or death due to a lack of essential healthcare and medication. Chris tells us about the impacts of haemophilia on his life and mental health; the medical care required; his love for the outdoors and self-sufficiency; the challenges developing countries face in treatment for bleeding disorders; the greatest difficulties and joys of the Seven Summits; and how haemophilia actually helps him in the mountains. We also talk about the work of his Foundation, Save One Life, in developing countries, and what it's been like to be in a spotlight of profile from time to time. Thank you Chris for helping us learn about this. Please watch out later in 2020 for his Everest documentary, Bombardier Blood.

Mental illness in the bleeding disorders community is a challenging topic to discuss, but given that approximately one-third of people with a chronic illness experience symptoms of depression, it’s clearly a topic in need of more attention. This month’s guest is Debbie de le Riva, community advocate and social worker. She joins host Chris Bombardier and guest co-host Patrick James Lynch for an open and honest discussion about depression, mental illness, and suicide prevention in the bleeding disorders community, and the work that she’s doing to make an impact.
