The 5 Core Concepts to Customer Service Shep Hyken interviews Chris Lynam, Customer Service Expert and multi-franchise owner of Arthur Murray Dance Studios. He is the host of the podcast, Off the Floor, and author of the new book, The Choreography of Customer Service: High Touch Service in a Touch-Free World. They discuss how your organization can implement the five core concepts of good customer service. Top Takeaways: • Chris shares THE 5 CORE CONCEPTS TO CUSTOMER SERVICE from his book, The Choreography of Customer Service. 1. The Backstory: Customer service professionals should discover what steps have led the customer to their business. Instead of asking, "How can I help you right now?" ask, "What has brought you in here today?" If customer service professionals know their customer's backstory, they will be able to put themselves into their customer's shoes. This is how they can provide the level of service that they would want themselves. 2. The Negative: When you genuinely care for your customers, you will give them the "cautionary tale" when necessary. The most appropriate advice may not always be what the customer wants to hear. But, if it will give your customers the best outcome, you have to make sure they get the complete picture. 3. The Secret Mission: There is something unique that differentiates you from others and will help you outperform what might be considered average in your field or industry. 4. Muscle Memory: What attitudes and good habits developed over time come naturally to you as you serve your customers? 5. Return on Investment: How do you measure the return of investment on the frontlines? The return on investment is not necessarily measured by dollars. It can be measured by customer behaviour. It can be a compliment or the customer coming back to do more business with you. • Chris also talks about building your customer team like you are preparing for a bank heist. Tune in to find out what this means and if you should be preparing for your own "bank heist." Quote: "Feedforward instead of feedback. Instead of examining customer interactions after they happen, prepare your customer service team for different scenarios before they go out into the frontlines." The Choreography of Customer Service Customer service is a lot like dancing. You can sit on the sidelines, go through the motions, or take the time to learn. In this interview I speak with Chris Lynam who will give you the moves to stand out. Great insight! Guest Bio. Chris Lynam is a small business owner, father of five, and the author of the book The Choreography of Customer Service. While most business books are written from the perspective of the board room, his point of view comes from the ballroom. As a professional dancer, teacher, and worldwide trainer for Arthur Murray International, Chris's book reveals the secrets to high touch customer service for you and your business.
There I was... the Beverly Hills Hotel, holding my most prized possession tightly in my hands, looking at my expensive drink and a Hollywood producer sitting across from me. He wanted my script and as a 21-year-old writer, I wasn't sure if I could give it to him. Who would have thought that after a series of weird twists and turns, I'd end up becoming a professional ballroom dancer, business owner, worldwide trainer and keynote speaker? Eventually, after retiring from competitive dancing, my writing background would resurface with an industry leading blog and published articles in The Huffington Post, Forbes, INC, The Sporting News, and Fatherly. I'm obsessed with the learning process. I live and breathe to help teachers improve in their ability to convey information. While Arthur Murray has been around since 1912, teaching has been one of our civilization's oldest professions... and the technology of teaching is a system update any industry can benefit from. So that's me. Oh, and I love my wife, my 4 kids (and counting), digital marketing, podcasting, and, of course, writing. Thank you for reading this summary and cheers to the pivot points, pitfalls, learning lessons, and ill-prepared moments with Hollywood producers that got you here. #361 Hair Length Apartheid - It's a New Year (for you, though Richard is just pretending) and Rich looks back on his weird and unsettling 2021, but definitely sees the positives in it all. Will this year be better than the last one or will the years just continue top get worse and worse until we all die? His guest is the king of the clowns and circuit legend, Chris Lynam, who you might know from his firework up the bum routine, but who has a whole lot more to him than that. They chat about what Chris remembers of the early alternative comedy scene, working with Ken Campbell on The Warp, Malcolm Hardee overestimating how easy it is to light fireworks in your buttocks, the Greatest Show on Legs, ErictheFred (check out some clips from this beautiful show here https://chrislynam.net/eric-the-fred/), what destroyed the spirit of alternative comedy (and Richard's part in that), who destroyed the rainforest of Zimbabwe and how Chris nearly became impaled on a bed of nails. Plus the times that his perilous appearing act actually spilled over into real danger, the heart and soul of the clown and how Chris has managed to maintain the same level of madness without actually turning any more mad. This is a cracker of a show and if you haven't heard of Chris you should definitely still listen. Regret seems to be the villain of every motivational post, keynote, and mindset coaching session. We've all heard that "the pain of hard work hurts less than the pain of regret" but what if we've got it all wrong? What if we've miscast regret as the villain in our hero's journey? That's the subject we explore in this solo episode of Off The Floor with Chris Lynam. In the words of modern American philosopher, Alan Iverson, we're talking about practice. As much as our brains our like sponges, sometimes we get oversaturated. Here is a solo episode where we'll look at why it's safe to choose information over application and what we can do make the adjustment.
"When I think back on my first year as a professional... I wonder how I survived." If you've ever suffered from acute procrastination, this is your episode.
"You'll never be any good as a dance teacher" certainly isn't the best pep talk in the world... but sometimes the weirdest things can serve as fuel on your journey. In the first in a series of personal tales, Chris Lynam, host of Off The Floor and business owner, shares how he hit rock bottom only to find an activity that became his career. With a mix of stories of basketball and swing dancing, collegiate indecisiveness and references to Joseph Campbell's Heroe's Journey, this unlikely success story is sure to motivate you.
