That's what we're all doing anyways right...trying? We loved this week's Episode 57: The Try Zone because not only did we learn about a sport we weren't super familiar with, rugby, but we also learned a lot of fun new sports terms. We had a great time talking and learning with John Mead and Christine Bader, two local youth rugby coaches. This is a fun and intriguing sport and our community and these two leaders are really offering our kids a great opportunity. From the unique rugby culture, to the skills and values the kids are learning through this sport, there's a lot to love here. Have fun with this one!

Business was a driving focus for Christine Bader from a young age. Growing up in Manhattan with two parents both working in corporate America, she followed their lead and received her MBA from Yale. Community interest was also a focus for her, working both with AmeriCorps and in NYC government to support misplaced youth. Bader enjoyed serving in communities that needed support, but when John Browne, then-CEO of BP, spoke to her business class in 1998, Bader knew she'd found her company. She went on to work for BP for eight years and fell in love. But then the Deepwater Horizon explosion spilled over 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico and everything changed.    Bio: Christine calls herself a “Thought leader, community/program builder, consigliere/facilitator/advisor/evangelist on all things business and society.” She is the Co-Founder, Storyteller, The Life I Want.co.    Key Links: Christine's Book: The Evolution of a Corporate Idealist When Girl Meets Oil. I was so excited to speak with Christine Bader and Eva Dienel about their important work at “The Life I Want.” Christine and Eva are both idealists and writers in their own right, and with this storytelling project they are telling rich stories to reframe the discussion about work in our lives. It all starts with “The Life I Want,” not work. And in this episode, we hear what brought each of them to reorient their own work to support their lives vs. living to work, taking them to Bali and Australia, respectively, for a period of time, as well as homesteads in Oregon. For them, the future of work requires that we change our relationship with work, as individuals and as a society, so more people can live happier, more fulfilled lives. There are four pillars that frame their working model: 1) individual, 2) employers, 3) community, and 4) government, and we speak of each of these in this episode. While we talk about how in today's model you need a super power to pull yourself towards working to live as opposed to living to work, finding more fulfillment for all can't be only on the individual. They advocate that we also need safety nets to make it possible, such as employers stepping up and realizing that the work they provide employees is a product in itself, leaning on our communities, and government programs and legislation. In this conversation, we also touch on the idea of creating your own measurements of success, the importance of valuing care in our society, and that the answers lie in fixing work for the most marginalized, as those solutions will likely work for us all.If you want to be inspired to create a life you want and want to hear how to start to rethink what it would mean to take an alternate path, listen in and check out Christine and Eva's work at The Life I Want: https://www.thelifeiwant.co/ to read their beautiful stories of others who are showing us the way towards a brighter future of work that will work for all. Thanks for Listening! If you liked this episode, please rate, review, and share the episode. How do you know what your dream job is? And what happens when you finally land it? In this week's episode, you'll hear the story behind how Christine Bader answers these questions. After earning her MBA at Yale, Christine got her first job at BP — during a time when corporate social responsibility (CSR) was just emerging.  There was no playbook or foolproof guide — it was simply new, uncharted territory. But she loved the concept of CSR, so she took that passion with her as she moved on to other opportunities, including writing her book, “Evolution of a Corporate Idealist: When Girl Meets Oil,” and finding (what she thought was) her dream job as the director of social responsibility at Amazon. In this episode, we talk about how she had “everything” professionally but realized this actually wasn't the life she wanted. Listen to find out how she ultimately decided to quit her dream job and pursue her latest venture as the co-founder of The Life I Want.

This episode is with Christine Bader, who I first met in Indonesia in the early 2000s. I remember her as a fixture in the Cinnebar in Jakarta. She was working with BP managing the company's relationship with NGOs. In those days I was a wizened cynical hack, so I didn't set much store by such things, but she was funny, open and interesting and did interesting things. We stayed in touch, even when she went on to become director of social responsibility at Amazon. After that she spent a year so in Bali, and now she's in Oregon, working on a storytelling project called The Life I want, about reimagining work. I wanted to find out what that meant in the midst of a globe-changing pandemic, both personal, and, well, globally. http://christinebader.com
