Today's piece is guest-produced by students at Minerva University - a four-year, US accredited college where the students are on semester-abroads all the time. In Fall 2022, more than a hundred Minerva students spent time in Taiwan. Nate was a mentor to four students who wanted to make a podcast on sustainability. And here's the result!A VEGAN STORY - TAIWANDespite the recent rise of popularity in veganism, it is true that veganism is associated often with a restrictive, judgemental connotation. However, veganism in Taiwan is proof that veganism does not have to be all or nothing Today, 1 in 7 people in Taiwan live with a vegan or vegetarian diet, with a diverse array of vegan alternatives to choose from. However, despite the abundance of alternatives, not many Taiwanese do not actively identify themselves as vegan or vegetarian. Why may this be the case? For many, it may seem like the increasing global attention towards sustainability has shifted the options available for keeping a vegan diet, extending the abstinence from all forms of animal products into more and more people's everyday lives. But veganism is not just a story about sustainability. In Taiwan, veganism is an embedded practice within everyday life that is a combination of politics, religion, sustainability, and more. In this article, we will cover Taiwan's unique vegan story, created through its unique cultural background. We will delve into the past, present, and future of Taiwan's veganism, exploring the multifaceted story that has allowed Taiwan to become so vegan. This episode is written and produced by Stephanie Froebel, Jana Majnova, Seo Kim, and Narandelger Erdenebileg.Enjoy! This is Waste Not Why Not, a climate podcast from Ghost Island Media. Last month, Taiwan's largest green energy event took place in Taipei connecting the domestic renewable energy industries with their international counterparts. So obviously, Nature N8 had to go.This year, Energy Taiwan had 5 categories: solar, wind, smart storage, emerging power and net zero Taiwan. This year, N8 saw bigger booths, plenty of renewable technologies, and goats. Yes, real goats. There's exciting times ahead for the renewable energy sector in Taiwan. But there were still some things Nate wanted to see more of at Energy Taiwan. Energy alternatives were rarely featured and Taiwan's net zero plan could have played a bigger role.To read more about Taiwan's Net Zero Targets, click here. This is Waste Not Why Not, a climate podcast from Ghost Island Media. The climate crisis came into full view this summer as countries across Europe experienced record-high temperatures in July. In the UK, a train track caught on fire, and an airport runway melted. In France, they called it a “heat apocalypse.”But while Europe is trying to deal with 40-47 degree celsius weather, we need to remember that things have been bad for a long time now. In 2016, parts of India reached 51C degrees celsius. The climate crisis affects everyone on this planet, but why do we pay attention only to some countries, and not others? Most of our infrastructures just weren't built for this new climate, and the climate policy sphere, we refer to this as adaptation. Adaptation is where countries, companies, institutions adapt to new levels of warming from our warming planet. We need to ask some important questions as well. How long will these events last? Where will they be? And what do these countries need to do or need to survive them? Today, N8 has a list of climate resources he recommends: Bloomberg Green Volts by David Roberts Carbon Brief Professor Jesse Jinkins at Princeton Professor Kuei-Tien Chou at the Risk Society and Policy Research Center in Taiwan And here's more - National Geographic, Enric Sala Podcast Catalyst by Shayle Kann theconversation.com Yale Environment 360 And for your friends, colleagues, and families, here's a digital library from the Waste Not Why Not team and our guests: https://wastenotwhynot.com/#library This is Waste Not Why Not, a climate podcast from Ghost Island Media. The ocean temperature is rising, and that's killing corals. But scientists are finding out that some corals can resist climate change. So if we wanted to make sure that at least some corals survive in the future, which species should we save? We are at a coral lab to speak to Shashank Keshavmurthy at the Biodiversity Research Center at Academia Sinica in Taiwan. He's setting up an experiment to stress test corals in a lab, and trying to figure out how resilient corals can be to temperature changes. A new, knowledge-filled, episode on corals is coming your way, but to prepare you for it, we bring you an old episode to catch you up to speed. Happy World's Ocean Day! Corals are dying. By 2050 we probably won't have any corals left in our oceans. So scientists around the world are trying to figure out how to regrow coral reefs, and some have even turned to 3D printing for coral restoration. But is this possible? Can technology save corals? Solar is - in some places in the world - the cheapest energy, even cheaper than coal and oil with fossil fuel subsidies. Solar is inexpensive, inoffensive, inexpensive. But it wasn't always this easy. Investing in solar used to be risky business. What happened? Welcome to class SEI101: Solar Energy Investment. Today, we speak to Mark Oei, an investor of real estate and clean energy. He's founding partner at Redwood Coast Capital and a lecturer at the Kellogg School of Management. We also catch up with Calvin Cheng, co-founder of the solar developer PGE in Taiwan. Cheng tells us it's much easier to get financing now than ever. By 2030, 1 in 7 American homes are expected to have solar panels. And by 2050, it's to become up to 45% of the U.S. electricity supply. Over here in Taiwan, clean energy accounts for just 5% of our energy supply. Taiwan wants to raise that number to 20% by 2030. (Fun fact - Taiwan was an early manufacturer of the world's solar panels.) ** Today's episode is sponsored by American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) - who has a focus on climate-related initiatives. From building dirt bikes to supercars, to something that may or may not be on Mars right now, Azizi Tucker has done it all. Being environmentally conscious has been a theme of his career, but his real focus? It's been about making better products. But his products have a side effect of massively reducing pollution. Azizi Tucker is a tinkerer, racer, engineer, and entrepreneur. Tucker raced mountain bikes competitively as a youth in California, worked on secret projects while at NASA, and was one of the first 100 employees at Tesla and had a heavy hand in figuring out its supply chain right here in Asia. That's when Tucker realized that Taiwan was the perfect place for manufacturing and R&D. Since then, he's co-founded an EV company in Taiwan making electric supercars and solving electrification for the world's commercial and industrial vehicles. He's now founder of Graft EV where he will now make electric recreational vehicles right here in Taiwan. That's dirt bikes, ATV, maybe your snowmobile in the future. Today, we find out just how diverse the field of electric vehicles is, and see an example of how Azizi's continued to learn, and innovate, and make fast breakthroughs. California is leading the United States into the solar panel revolution. And spoilers: it's actually quite boring. Or at least, that's what an OG environmentalist would say. This episode, Nature N8 walks us through the process of installing solar panels on his parents' roof, in the Californian suburbs. He explains the financial magic of solar, compares it to industrial scale installments, and finds hope in how the once-radical technology has now become ordinary. We don't all have to be sustainability consultants in order to save the environment. You can keep doing what you're good at - and apply your expertise to environmental problems. That's how Isabel stepped into circular design. Isabel Aagaard is an entrepreneur and product designer. She founded LastObject two years ago in Copenhagen, Denmark, with a mission to eliminate single-use items by creating their reusable alternatives. Today's show is done in collaboration with The Taiwan Take. Taiwan's next referendum will soon vote on activating the nation's fourth nuclear plant, as well as constructing a natural gas plant on an algal reef that's critical for Taiwan's biodiversity. These decisions come as governments around the world are scrambling to meet the demands of the Paris Agreement, and as environmental activists fight for a more sustainable planet. Green Parties propose an alternative voice in politics to tackle our environmental ruin. All over the world, there are 91 Green Parties that believe in committing our governments to environmental stewardship, through electing green movement leaders into office. In Asia, Taiwan is home to the region's oldest Green Party, which won a National Assembly seat in 1996 - their very first election campaign. Our guest today is Professor Dafydd Fell, a political scientist at SOAS University of London, and Director of the Centre of Taiwan Studies. Dafydd Fell is author of the new book: “Taiwan's Green Parties: Alternative Politics in Taiwan”, published in March 2021 by Routledge. Do you enjoy gaming? Do you enjoy surviving our climate apocalypse? Well, good news! You can enjoy both at the same time! Last fall, Nature N8 went to a World Climate Simulation event, called En-ROADS, where participants roleplay as all sorts of different sectors to negotiate for better climate policies. N8 finds out what goes on throughout the simulation, and why this game was created in the first place. Thank you to Omplexity, TWYCC, and the Hive Taipei for organizing this En-ROADS session. And special shoutout to our Patreon patron Brian for inviting us to the event! You can play En-ROADS yourself on the Climate Interactive website. Finally, a quote on hope: “Hope is not a lottery ticket you can sit on the sofa and clutch, feeling lucky. It is an axe you break down doors with in an emergency. Hope should shove you out the door, because it will take everything you have to steer the future away from endless war, from the annihilation of the earth's treasures and the grinding down of the poor and marginal... To hope is to give yourself to the future - and that commitment to the future is what makes the present inhabitable.” ― Rebecca Solnit, Hope in the Dark Support “Waste Not Why Not” on Patreon. You’ve heard about this. Bees are dying. And we’re gonna go down with them. But maybe you haven’t heard that life in the ocean is just as crucial for human survival as those on land. This episode, Nature N8 speaks with Dr. Enric Sala about his new book: The Nature of Nature - Why We Need the Wild, which lays out precisely how we are integrated in this planet’s wondrous and irreplaceable ecosystem. Dr. Enric Sala was a professor at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, now working full time in conservation as a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence. The Nature of Nature synthesizes his decades of research on ecology, and provides an accessible introduction for people who want to learn more about our natural world. In this conversation, N8 and Dr. Sala talk about hope in marine protected areas, swimming with sharks in California, and the marvelous message of the Church of Plankton. Two major things happened this week: 1/ COP (Conference of the Parties - ie the only time countries meet to negotiate climate agreements) just wrapped up in Spain. 2/ Youth climate activist Greta Thunberg was named TIME Person of the Year. Today, we discuss something in between. Every year at COP, young activists continue to be at the front of the conversation. This episode, we meet a climate activist from Taiwan who’s attendance at a previous COP as a 21-year-old created a diplomatic stir. He also found a very unlikely ally, who also took him to Antarctica. Our youth activist is Liang-Yi Chang (張良伊). He co-founded the Taiwan Youth Climate Coalition in 2008/9.
