Christmas season 2024 is here! As usual, we at Boys' Bible Study will be spending all of December pondering the reason for the season with Christmas movies made by Christian directors. We're huge fans of director Chip Rossetti, but so far we've only ever watched his films written by and starring the singular Donald James Parker, aka “Gramps” (such as GRAMPS GOES TO COLLEGE, which we love.) So, to kick off the new Christmas season, we took a chance on a script written by Rossetti himself… and we were not disappointed. In fact, we were thrilled. THE BORROWED CHRISTMAS is a wholesome and hilarious watch about a man who makes insane life decisions and a woman who loves him for it. John Dale is a lonely rich man who dreams of the “Normal Rockwell Christmases” of his past but can no longer access the vibe due to grief over the death of his parents. He stumbles into Anne Weston's store, whose business it is to “rent everything”, and John asks Anne to rent him the perfect Christmas. Money is no object. He asks for a wife, five kids, and carolers… the works! Anne is clearly intrigued by this handsome eccentric and sets out upon her greatest challenge yet. She secures (traffics?) orphans from the nearby orphanage to portray the kids and casts herself as the wife role after she is unable to hire an actor from the nearby Actors' Guild (?). The Christmas that transpires is perfect in every way and ends up making a consequential impact on the life of John Dale, his two spacey maids, and everyone involved in the production. THE BORROWED CHRISTMAS is fun, snappy, and ethically dubious, so we can't think of a better start to your Christmas season then to gather in the TV room and watch this with all of your favorite orphans. Just when we thought Advent was ruined, “Captain Save a Christmas” himself, former child star and current Christian cinema kingpin Kirk Cameron is back with another banger. KIRK CAMERON'S SAVING CHRISTMAS is just one of a series of docudramas Kirk Cameron helmed in the 2010s. Our favorite is his masterpiece KIRK CAMERON'S CONNECT, a bizarre piece that combines interviews and dramatizations to explore how dangerous the Internet can be to a Christian family. KIRK CAMERON'S SAVING CHRISTMAS, which was directed and co-written by accomplished music video director Darren Doane, follows a similar formula in its attempt to keep the Christmas spirit alive. We've seen a lot of Christian media arguing that the spirit of Christmas needs aggro maintanence, but this film contains a bizarre point of view that sets it apart from the others. Basically, KIRK CAMERON'S SAVING CHRISTMAS tries to prove that all of the popular American secular Christmas traditions, from Santa to gift shopping, contain profound religious symbolism and should be observed seriously. Other Christian movies ask, “Whose birthdays is it anyway? Santa's or Jesus's?” whereas KIRK CAMERON'S SAVING CHRISTMAS reminds us that Santa is a perfect analogue to Jesus and should be supported wholeheartedly. Also, presents represent the New Jerusalem and the Christmas tree represents the Garden of Eden. We thank Kirk Cameron for reminding us that Santa Claus is truly the reason for the season. With Christmas 2022 quickly approaching, I'm reminded that 2014 was about re-inventing myself; I'd asked Santa for a new electric guitar and began dreaming. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/patrick-ball/message
In this episode of our FROSTY FAILURES SERIES we take a look at the film Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas (2014) Kirk is enjoying the annual Christmas party extravaganza thrown by his sister until he realizes he needs to help out Christian, his brother-in-law, who has a bad case of the bah-humbugs. Kirk's fresh look at Christmas provides Christian the chance to see Christ is where He has always been: at the center of our Christmas celebrations and traditions. Can Kirk save his in-law's opinions on Christmas or will he have to celebrate the holiday without him? Dan has a fondness for movies in the "mumblecore" style. What better way to introduce Brian than a holiday-themed outing? Join as Dan and Brian discuss the style and its influences, the movie's depiction of drugs and booze, and Brian's big-tent approach to Christmas movies. When we come to Christ we fulfill our potential as image-bearers of God. But without receiving and using the gift of salvation we are like an unopened present, whose value goes unrealized. God beckons us to him and when we respond and receive the gift, He restores us to the original image in which He created us, and we are then given a new heart with new desires. Isaiah's prophetic vision shows us the heart of God as it pertains to us - not a rigid system of rules but a tender and compassionate heart of love. Isaiah 61:10-62:3 Recorded at Hudson UMC on December 28, 2014 (Previously unpublished) S.D.G.
Happy Holidays from Coming of Age! On this first part of our Christmas Special the boys discuss Kirk Cameron’s faith based “comedy” Saving Christmas. We talk about how condescending the performances are, the giant leaps in logic the movie makes to justify its points, and whether this can even be classified as a movie. Tune in and enjoy!
Arguments are wrought, shocking truths come to light, and nothing will ever be the same again - just like every Christmas, really. WhoSoc celebrates by examining Tennant's Voyage of the Damned (2007) and Capaldi's Last Christmas (2014).
Kirk Cameron is on a mission to put the Christ back in Christmas, but he doesn’t want to give up his tree and presents and big ham so he’s found it’s easier to just argue all those things are what God intended. Joe Ketchum, Jef Burnham, and John Stahl gather for a little yuletide fear as they watch the delightfully absurd horrors of Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas.
