The Black Penny Market

There is only one currency that is able to abide at the nexus of all existence. In our world, we call it the black penny. Genre: Fantasy   Excerpt: Touching the penny evoked a vision in my mind of a swirling whirlpool, not of water, but of stars. I felt a moment of calm sweep over me. The problems I faced were real and daunting and major. But there were things in the universe that dwarfed them. A little bit like how I dwarfed that little penny.   What story or stories am I revisiting in this episode? Each Season 8 episode is a standalone story, but it's connected to or inspired by a previous story through a character, a place, an object, a concept, a continuation of events (ahem, sequel), and so on. I once wrote a story based on the saying, “see a penny, pick it up, and all the day you'll have good luck.” But luck can be fickle, can't it? That story is called “Copper Penny.”   MERCH!Interested in merch, like mugs and notebooks, featuring my artwork? Silhouette of a person who appears to be standing in mid-air, seen from a low angle. The person is wearing pants and a hoodie, and a raising up right arm. Just above the left shoulder is a small black circle, glowing slightly.  A multi-colored hazy bar of light originates from the circle, passes behind the figure, and angles to the bottom left corner, into a multi-colored gas cloud that leads into a fog. At top left corner a disc-shaped galaxy, the Milky Way. A translucent peach-colored bar angles up from the bottom right to the top right. Another similar bar angles to the left from the right side. A squiggly neon line connects the two bars. Colors drip upward where the two bars meet. The original image is made square by adding a top and bottom border with colors and shattered square discs in the same color scheme. Watermark of “Storyfeather” along figure's left arm.

High jinks ensue when two caterpillar fairies who are close to death attend a grand fairy ball as a last hurrah. Genre: Fable, Fairy Tale, Fantasy   Excerpt: “Alas! We are doomed to die as caterpillars, never having become butterflies.” Lickspittle shook hishead. He gazed up and shook several fists at the sky. Sobersides sighed gravely. “Perhaps tomorrow morning.” The two caterpillar fairies had woken that morning, and that meant that they were still caterpillars. And that would have been fine, save that they had both reached the age where most caterpillars had already formed cocoons and transformed into butterfly fairies.   What's the Word (that inspired the story)? There are two: Lickspittle & Sobersides Lickspittle: a contemptible, fawning person; a servile flatterer or toady. The t-drives were expensive. And unlike large organizations who could absorb the cost, individual contractors like Ryan and his crew had to weigh their options, even when their safety was concerned. In the heart of our galaxy, there abides a supermassive black hole. One of the grand mysteries of our age, and of the last age, and the one before. We call it the ultimate ocean, but with its relentlessly swirling energies, it is more like a monstrous whirlpool. We seek to know what lies in its mysterious exotic depths. Depths that are protected by an unforgiving mouth, slurping matter as a person would slurp a noodle soaked in broth. A mouth lined with spinning molecular razor-teeth that can shear those noodles of matter into subatomic soup.   In the heart of our galaxy, there are mysteries no human has ever encountered before, except maybe we have in the oldest of our stories…our myths. When I first arrived in the desert city, raw and untried, eyes wide with wonder, heart filled with longing, and head filled with air just like the myriad dirigibles that crowded the skies, I could never have imagined where my path would lead me.   The dirigibles of the desert city transport goods, residents, and visitors; but only one class of airship can take its passengers to the city's most treasured and mysterious locale. Past guests including comedian Tara Flynn, Brendan Boyle, Caitríona Perry, Emma de Souza, Sarah Maria Griffin, Caelainn Hogan, Sarah Creighton, Ronan McCrea and Matthew O'Toole join us again for a Christmas reunion! It's a bizarre one for many of us this year but we hear from people all around the world who are making it special where they are. Naomi and Tim tell some stories of hope as we approach the winter solstice: the darkest day of the year before the days get brighter, that has been celebrated as a turning point for millennia. Featuring some original (and very on point!) music by Michael Fry. Music: Lockdown Christmas by Michael Fry, Christmas lights by TRG Banks, Let's Just Get Through Christmas by Doctor Turtle. Huge thanks to all our contributors. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter at @PassportIrish. If you enjoyed this episode, do give us a good review in your podcast app and share it with your friends.
