Five years ago we were approached by a young girl by the name of Olivia Foy. Olivia told us of her passion for music and her love of Kpop groups. Fast forward to 2018 and we were excited to hear from the Melbournian again, this time informing us that she has found a love for county music and has released her debut EP. Based in Melbourne, Olivia is one of Australia's newest faces in Country Music. Having fallen in love with music from a young age, she knew that there was nothing else in the world that she wanted to pursue. Armed with her first guitar at 12 years old, she began her song writing and producing journey. Growing up, she looked up to artists such as Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood for inspiration. This ultimately led her to major in Music Technology at university, where she affectionately became known as "Asian Taylor Swift". It was in her final year at university that Olivia started working on her debut EP, which is due late 2018. The first single from her debut EP "Kiss Me" is out now and it has also been added to the Asian Pop Radio 24/7 radio stream. Make sure you head to your APP store now to download our APP and tune in for free. Listen to our interview with Olivia as she reflects on her music career so far and explains how she has come to love country music and the work she is doing to break into the challenging music market that it is. There may even be a little Kpop chatter in the mix, but you will just have to see for yourself. Want more Asian Pop Radio? We are back in podcast form for 2018. Thank you for your patience, with a studio move and a change in our structure its taken us some time to get to where we are today, but we start podcasting once again with a truly inspirational interview with local man Duy Huynh. In this very special Asian Pop Radio podcast, we speak to the man who, with his family were refugees who left Vietnam for a better life in very turbulent times. Duy speaks of the journey he and his family took via boat, to Australia and the difficulties those on the boat endured, some of whom did not make it to land again. Duy also speaks of happier times where his grand mother effectively introduced the world to the concept of Bánh mì, pretty much a stable go-to food for lunch times in Australia today. This podcast highlights the importance of welcoming refugees of all backgrounds, how our society has changed for the better with thanks to years of migrants making Australia their home and provides an example of a success story that changed the face of fast food locally.

Charlie played an intimate solo concert for Brisbane Festival in 2015 and now returns to the festival in full force with his super-band The Mothership. Stretched between acoustic melancholia, neo-soul, post-rock, and electronic-pop – the extremities that mark Charlie’s music – there’s a cinematic gravitas that takes you on a sonic journey set against the rich narratives of life’s tales. Regarded as one of Singapore’s finest musical exports, Charlie’s music has opened doors to the region’s biggest festivals and stages, supporting international artists such as Kimbra and Sigur Rós. His songs have reached over 2.4 million plays on Spotify alone, and his record ‘TIME/SPACE’ clinched the No. 1 album spot on iTunes’ Singapore chart and was also awarded Album of the Year by The Straits Times, Singapore’s leading newspaper. In this podcast Asian Pop Radio's Jay John speaks to Charlie about living in Melbourne for a period of time, musical influences, his performance earlier this year at Asia Pop Fest at Sydney Myer Music Bowl and what audiences in Brisbane have in stall or themselves. Charlie performs at the The Courier-Mail Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent, as part of Brisbane Festival, 5pm Sunday 17th of September. Visit brisbanefestival.com.au to book now.

Calvin, the 26 year old songwriter from Indonesia who goes under the alias PERSONEINVACANZE is a passionate musician who doesn't like to be limited to one genre. That's why one day you can listen to his electro song and the next, you'll hear an R'n'B track from him. Calvin started working on music in 2009, but its now with his release of the club track "+62" that we have really taken notice of him. So whats the meaning behind '+62' and what does it stand for? Well it refers to the international phone code of Indonesia, the setting of this awesome new track, but when the musician wrote the song, the meaning actually stood for more than just that. It is the artists symbol of liberation from the pressures of having to be like everyone else, to fall in line or to do what is expected of him as a young guy growing up and trying to make his mark on the world. The pressures of everyday life and having to do what everyone expects you to do may have been the motivation behind the song for Calvin, but its a light bulb moment that we don't all get to have until much later in our lives, admirable that at the age of 26, Calvin has already discovered that about himself and is carving a way forward. Escape from everyday life and listen to Asian Pop Radio's Jay John and Jhube as they get to know Calvin and his work. Released in the later half of July, Sky 2’s debut single ‘Heaven & Hell’ is a fresh take on the urban pop genre, signifying the recording debut of the identical twins. Made up of Julien and Brandon Leo, they share, “It's the lasting dull pain you feel months after a break up, when you've moved on but still look back and realise that there was and will never be someone quite like her. She could take you to heaven and bring you to hell. However, when you were with her, it was ‘something else’. Sky 2’s freshman song deals with the pain of having love found and lost. Self-described as die-hard romantics, the pair writes about things and situations which are real to them. They enthuse about their songwriting method, “When we are together, it's like having another 'you' to direct and support each other in the process. While writing melodies and ideas, artists can get lost in the infinite ways that a song can turn out. Having a twin brother who resonates the same ideas means the overarching concepts are never lost. Twin telepathy.” In this interview Asian Pop Radio's Jay John and cohost Jhube speak to the twins about their working together as brothers, earlier interests around Kpop and dance as well as working on new material as Sky2. The boys also break news of a new single release.
Since their formation in 2011, the five-piece post-hardcore band, Villes has toured extensively across South East Asia, Japan & Australia performing alongside with local and regional groups, slowly building up a dedicated fan base. The2011 Invasion Tour in Singapore was their first official appearance where they played alongside local bands under the PSD artiste roster – A Vacant Affair, Avalanche and regional bands – I, Revival (Malaysia) and Rocket Rockers (Indonesia). In 2013 the group made their way across the Causeway to Malaysia with the independently organized “HOME TOUR 2013” supported by Malaysian clothing line Elstees and alongside Malaysian Rock veterans Tres Empre, The Padangs and I, Revival. The group found themselves playing across 7 dates, in 7 cities, over 7 weekend. Years of successful shows and tours followed. Now, the guys chat to Asian Pop Radio's Jay John to share a little about where it all got started, some of their highlights along the way and there fond memories of performing in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and.. wait for it.. Mildura! The boys speak about the support they receive from fellow Singaporeans and discuss the importance of other local groups working with each other and not against each other to promote their work to international audiences rather than competing with one another. Their latest single release is The Cure and you can hear it at the end of our podcast interview as well as viewing the video clip on our website at asianpopradio.com - Remember if you like what you hear please rate and review our podcasts on Podomatic, iTunes or your preferred podcasting platform.
