What the Riff?!?
1971 - May: Rod Stewart "Every Picture Tells a Story"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2025 34:16

Every Picture Tells a Story is a great name for Rod Stewart's third solo studio album.  The songs consist of solid storytelling, using mixture of original  and cover tracks to paint a mosaic of life, love, and loss.  This album would mark the transition of Stewart from a solid rock vocalist to an A-list performer.  Every Picture Tells a Story hit the top of the album charts in both the US and the UK, and its blend of rock, blues, and folk music would have a staying power over the decades. Supposedly the album was compiled on a shoestring budget, and consists of a number of songs paired with extended jams.Stewart compiled this album during his tenure as front man for the Faces, and all five members of that group appear on the album.  Because of contractual obligations at the time, the personnel listing on each track is a bit vague, but it is possible that all five members were on the recording of "(I Know) I'm Losing You."  The first single released from the album was "Reason to Believe," which was a cover of Tim Hardin's 1966 song.  But the B-side of that album would be the one that would cause Rod Stewart to become a breakthrough success.  That song, written by Rod Stewart and Martin Quittenton, was "Maggie May."  The album would top the charts, and would be a noticeable success on the year-end charts of the Billboard 200 albums in 1971 (#35) and 1972 (#65), while taking the number 2 spot for the UK album charts in 1971.  Not bad for a soccer player who wasn't able to go pro!Rob brings us the bluesy album for this week's podcast. (I Know) I'm Losing YouThis Motown hit originally recorded by The Temptations in 1966 is a lament of a relationship going bad.  Stewart's cover went to number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Motown rock group Rare Earth had a cover of this song a year earlier in 1970.  Rod Stewart has several members of the Faces playing on this track. That's Alright/Amazing GraceAnother outstanding cover, this one is of the debut single from Elvis Presley in 1954.  However, the original goes back to blues singer Arthur Crudup in 1946.  But even that long time period is dwarfed by the pairing of the traditional hymn "Amazing Grace" which dates back to 1772.  This deep cut shows some of the diversity of the album.  Every Picture Tells a StoryThe lead-off and title track to the album was an original co-written by Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood.  The lyrics are told from the perspective of a musician on tour who finds adventure with women in multiple cities before returning home to think back on his travels.  The lyrics are more free-form in this song, not following a consistent pattern of rhymes. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television comedy "Green Acres"This sit-com featuring city dwellers who move to the country went off the air this month in 1971. STAFF PICKS:Don't Pull Your Love by Hamilton, Joe Frank & ReynoldsBruce starts out the staff picks with a song often attributed to Elvis Presley.  After performing with the T-Bones and having an instrumental hit with the song "No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In)" based on a popular jingle from an Alka-Seltzer TV commercial, this group went to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Don't Pull Your Love."It's Too Late by Carole KingLynch brings us a song with music by Carole King and lyrics penned by songwriter Toni Stern.  This breakup song is considered to be a feminist song by many, given that the woman is breaking up with the man.  Stern completed the lyrics in a single day after her breakup with fellow singer songwriter James Taylor.  This track would top the Billboard Hot 100, and would win the Grammy for Record of the Year in 1972.Charity Ball by FannyWayne's staff pick is the single release and title track from Fanny's second studio album.  Fanny was one of the first all-female rock bands playing their own instruments, and the first to record an entire album.  They got their start in Sacramento after sisters June and Jean Millington (guitar and bass) moved there from the Philippines.  The group was completed with Nickey Barclay on keyboards and Alice de Buhr on drums. If Not for You by Olivia Newton JohnRob features a cover originally penned by Bob Dylan.  Olivia Newton John would make this her first international release and her breakthrough song.  Her cover closely follows George Harrison's cover, including prominent use of the slide guitar.  Olivia Newton John took this track to number 25 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and to number 7 on the UK singles chart. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Milky Way by Weather ReportThis Avant-garde jazz instrumental takes us out of this week's podcast.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. [01:17] Mike interviews Sarah-Jane Hogg about her long association with Friends of ANCHOR and what the charity means to her. [04:39] Friends of ANCHOR is currently celebrating twenty-five years of supporting haematology and cancer care in the North and North-east of Scotland, so Mike highlights various articles from the local newspaper, ‘The Press and Journal', which appeared in 1997, the charity's first year of operation. As well as mentioning a number of early fundraising initiatives in support of the charity, this ‘From the Archives' feature notes that one of the ground-breaking items of equipment was described in terms that very much belonged to the twentieth century when it was reported that it looked like a “portable cassette player”! [17:08] Mike and his wife, Alison, introduce the ‘Finding the Words' segment, the aim of which is to provide an opportunity to explore some of the issues that are thrown up when we have to try to find the words and language to think, and speak, about serious illnesses in a meaningful and helpful manner.[21:45] This week's ‘And Finally!' item draws attention to the first documented case of cancer and expresses relief that medical treatment has come a long way since the ancient Egyptians used the ‘fire drill' to treat breast cancer! [28:22] Please get in touch with any suggestions or feedback about the podcast by emailing foapodcast@freerangepodcasting.co.uk. We start with a tragedy, then a cautionary tale of the world not ready for a band. We then find more positive inspiration from an artist who delivers a huge seller. We end with a legend.  Janis Joplin dies just before releasing her magnum opus, “Pearl.” A band called Fanny is ready to rock, but a culture poisoned by the patriarchy isn't yet ready to accept them. Carole King makes Tapestry, a sincere, modest, and deeply personal album that hits huge and becomes a milestone for women. We complete the story with a profile of one of the giants of 20th Century Music, Joni Mitchell. We discuss her artistic and commercial peak in the early 70s with “Blue,” “For the Roses,” and “Court and Spark.” We admire all of these women for kicking down the door, and we celebrate the progress we've made since them, but there is still a long way to go. Now for some general remarks about the research and writing. To the best of our ability, we tried to center women in this chapter. We'll leave it to the listener to decide how we did with that. There's a diversity of opinion about this, but we think it's fair to say the second wave of feminism hits the crest during the period we are covering, and it is not at all a coincidence that women really start to make big and important contributions to Rock Music right around this time too. Roe vs Wade was decided right around here, about fifty years ago. We are painfully aware of the US Supreme Court's recent decision to overturn Roe, stripping many millions of American women of their fundamental human rights to bodily autonomy and medical privacy. As we move forward with our chapters, we will document that half century of regressive backlash and how it got us here; it's part of the story. Like we often say, Rock N Roll reflects back on, interacts with, and affects the larger society. And vice versa. In the late Sixties and early Seventies, it seemed like the progress would be permanent, and that more progress was on the way. Some of us were naive enough to believe that. We would do well now to remember the words of the anti slavery activist Frederick Douglass, way back in 1857: This struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, and it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. This podcast had me loving my name from the get go!   Emily Soutter lost her beautiful sister Katie to Cystic Fibrosis 12 months ago and in that time has created a charity ball for 500 attendees whilst working full time. www.facebook.com/emsoutter Emily shares her sisters story, a vivacious person with a zest for life who made an impact in the lives of everyone she met.   Katie was born with Cystic fibrosis yet didn't let it define her. She underwent 2 double lung transplants and passed away whilst waiting for her third at 32 years young! Katie was also a personal trainer who understood the importance of staying healthy and empowered others to do the same.   Emily and I keep Katie's legacy alive by sharing the amazing work Emily has done in creating a ball in her sisters honour, with only one committee member, herself! We share how the first charity drive was selling boxes of chocolate and how the leap to a ball filled with music, silent auctions and music was initially daunting but exhilarating at the same time.   One of my companies, Buckle Bandage is a proud sponsor with all proceeds going to St Vincent's Lung & Transplant Clinic, where Katie was the recipient of her lung transplants.   We are excited to share the evening with Emily and the story with our listeners! What a night the 25th march 2022 will be! This is a must listen for anyone thinking of creating a charity event to help raise awareness of a cause they are passionate about.   Join our Facebook group here: (www.facebook.com/groups/461822665123720)chat to Emily or other likeminded community members who are Switching their Sitch, starting a small business or growing an Empire.

Fanny special with in conversation with David Eastaugh. Fanny was an American rock band, active in the early 1970s. They were one of the first all-female rock groups to achieve critical and commercial success, including two Billboard Hot 100 top 40 singles. The group was founded by guitarist June Millington and her sister, bassist Jean, (who had been playing music together since they moved from the Philippines to California in the early 1960s). After playing through several variations of the band, they attracted the interest of producer Richard Perry who signed them to Reprise Records in 1969 as Fanny. The band recorded four albums together before June Millington quit the group, leading to the original line-up splitting. Following a final album, Fanny disbanded in 1975. The Millington sisters have continued to play music together since the split, and with a former drummer, Brie Howard Darling, formed the spin-off group Fanny Walked the Earth in 2018. The group has continued to attract critical acclaim for rejecting typical girl group styles and expectations of women in the rock industry generally, and emphasizing their musical skills. Later groups, such as The Bangles and The Runaways, cited Fanny as a key influence. Sisters June and Jean Millington moved with their family from the Philippines to Sacramento, California, in 1961. They began to play music together on ukuleles as they found it helped them gain friends. In high school they formed an all-female band called the Svelts with June on guitar, Jean on bass, Addie Lee on guitar, and Brie Brandt on drums. Brandt left to get married and was later replaced by Alice de Buhr. When the Svelts disbanded, de Buhr and Lee formed another all-female group called Wild Honey. The Millington sisters later joined this band, which played Motown covers and eventually moved to Los Angeles. Frustrated by a lack of success or respect in the male-dominated rock scene, Wild Honey decided to disband after one final open-mic appearance at the Troubadour Club in Los Angeles in 1969. They were spotted at this gig by the secretary of producer Richard Perry, who had been searching for an all-female rock band to mentor. Perry convinced Warner Bros. Records to sign the band, still known as Wild Honey, to Reprise Records. The group won the contract without the label hearing them play, on the grounds of being a novelty act, despite their genuine musical talent. Prior to recording their first album, the band recruited keyboardist Nickey Barclay. The band was then renamed Fanny, not with a sexual connotation but to denote a female spirit. The initial lineup consisted of June Millington on guitar, Jean Millington on bass, de Buhr on drums, Barclay on keyboards, and Brandt on lead vocals and percussion. Perry dismissed Brandt because he wanted the group to be a self-contained four piece band like The Beatles. The Millingtons and Barclay all assumed lead vocal duties on alternating songs, while de Buhr sang lead occasionally on later albums. Perry produced the band's first three albums, beginning with Fanny in 1970. Because of the connection to Perry and Reprise Records, Barclay was invited to tour with Joe Cocker as a backing singer, and consequently appeared on the album Mad Dogs and Englishmen. The group's cover of Cream's "Badge" from the first album had significant radio airplay. The follow-up album, Charity Ball was released the following year, and its title track reached #40 on the Billboard Hot 100. The members of Fanny also worked as session musicians, and played on Barbra Streisand's 1971 album Barbra Joan Streisand, after Streisand had wanted to record with a small band. The group continued to pick up well-known fans; David Bowie sent the group a letter admiring their work and invited the band to a post-show party where he showed them mime techniques. With young engineer Leslie Ann Jones as their road manager and live sound mixer, Fanny toured worldwide, opening for Slade, Jethro Tull and Humble Pie, gaining widespread popularity in the United Kingdom. A 1971 article in Sounds remarked that the group "seems that they are the support group to everyone these days". The group made several live television appearances during tours, including The Sonny and Cher Show, American Bandstand, The Old Grey Whistle Test and Beat-Club. The group's third album, Fanny Hill (1972) featured the Beatles' engineer Geoff Emerick in addition to Perry's production. It included a cover of "Hey Bulldog" and Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar". The latter featured regular Rolling Stones saxophonist Bobby Keys, and was released as a single, reaching #85 on the Billboard Hot 100.[16][17] Fellow Stones sideman Jim Price also played brass on the album.Rolling Stone wrote a rave review of the album, praising the group's musical skills and particularly June Millington's ability to play both lead and rhythm guitar. Their fourth album, Mother's Pride (1973), was produced by Todd Rundgren. By the time Mother's Pride was released, June Millington was feeling constrained by the group format. The record label wanted her to wear certain designer clothes and adopt a hard rock image, which she resisted. She decided to quit the group, later saying "I needed to figure out who I was" and regularly clashed with Barclay, who had a different personality to her. June moved to Woodstock to study Buddhism, but insisted the group continue without her. de Buhr also left the band, with Brandt returning on drums. Patti Quatro (sister of Suzi Quatro) replaced June on guitar. This lineup signed with Casablanca Records and released the final Fanny album, Rock and Roll Survivors, in 1974. The first single, "I've Had It" reached #79 on the Billboard Hot 100. Brandt left the band shortly after the album's completion when she married composer James Newton Howard, and was briefly replaced by Cam Davis. Barclay quit the group at the end of 1974, thinking it was not working without June Millington. The second single, "Butter Boy" was written by Jean Millington about Bowie, and became their biggest hit, reaching #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1975. By the time that was released, the group had split.

Kelsey Chico  talks about her Girl Scout Gold project - United for Haiti. My project was constructing a playground in a community space and delivering donations in Haiti. After the events of Hurricane Matthew in 2016, many countries in the western hemisphere were the most impacted, Haiti being one of them. Supplies and rations were needed due to the destruction taken place mostly in the South of the country. I decided to take action and gather donations from many businesses and organizations that included toys, clothing items, hygiene products, shoes, etc. Episode available as a video at https://youtu.be/T17SXtF7V4M More about Kelsey: My name is Kelsey Chico and I am now an Ambassador Girl Scout. I am 16 years old, 15 when the project was complete, and I live in Florida. I joined Girl Scouts at the Brownie level and have enjoyed it ever since. My hobbies include video gaming, reading, painting, music mixing, singing and dance. This year will be my tenth year playing the violin and ninth year dancing. I like creating videos inspired by YouTubers and hope to one day start my own on topics such as gaming, singing, and general topics. Music is a big part of me and I like a variety of genres from video game soundtracks to movie soundtracks to modern artists. I enjoy playing FPS games on Xbox such as the Halo franchise but also creative thinking on Minecraft. I would like to be in the engineering field of STEM, perhaps audio design or video production because of my passion for video, editing and music, things that can create a message through the world of media. I would like to visit the company in charge of the Halo video game franchise, 343 Industries, because of my passion to learn about game design, soundtrack development and CGI. In addition, talk to movie directors and composers such as Andrew Stanton, Francis Lawrence, Joseph Kosinski, Steven Speilberg, Neil Davidge, Martin O’Donnell Kazuma Jinnouchi and voice actress Jen Taylor, to experience being in the shoes of directors and acting. I plan to continue dance and playing the violin but also Girl Scouts because of its life-changing goal. I had the help from the Haitian Consulate of Orlando to determine the destination for the donations. The Drive lasted over a 6 week period. After sorting by category for each item the weekend it finished, a confirmed weight of 2 ½ tons of donations were donated, 97 boxes total. I needed a way to deliver these donations overseas because, as you can imagine, many laws such as borer laws, water laws and international laws require many permissions and clearances. I contacted multiple cruise lines for the transport. Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines offered to ship the donations at no extra cost. I drove with my parents down to Port Canaveral where the company’s warehouse is located. I met with the transportation team and they unloaded the 97 boxes onto 4 pallets and proceeded to load them in the warehouse. They would be left there for inspection by K-9 dogs and other scanning procedures to verify the clearance of transportation. The donations would be loaded onto the cruise ship going to its next port of call: Labadee, Haiti. I met the Haitian Consulate of Orlando at the border of Labadee, Haiti and the rest of the country. We loaded the boxes into 3 separate pickup trucks and drove down to the district of Nippes, one the most affected areas of the country. It was about a 5 ½ hour drive. I stepped onto the back of the pickup truck and opened the boxes, handing them out to women, children and families. To see them happy and grateful for these donations made this art of the project successful. Children in the country of Haiti did not get the physical education needed for early childhood or an experience on a swing. I took the initiative to construct the playground in the same district. This would benefit their physical education and have a memorable childhood experience. I had purchased a playground set consisting of two swings, a monkey bar, rock-climbing wall, a dome and a slide and was funded from the Charity Ball hosted during the donation drive which was another successful take on my project. The funds came from organizations and local funders who also participated in a silent auction and fashion show to help raise funds for the playground set. The item was then shipped overseas through air transportation to Port Au Prince, the country’s capital, where I met the Haitian Consulate of Orlando and drove to her house where the set had been in safe keeping. We agreed to construct the playground in the district. I had the opportunity to speak with the mayor of the district and ask him for space needed. He agreed to a 49 sq ft grass space that was perfect for the playground! Added alongside the playground construction was a Geodome and picnic tables. The overall construction process lasted about 6-7 hours in the day. A ribbon ceremony was held before the playground’s opening of use. Many kid and children were excited about seeing this playground they had never seen before! Two distinct memories I had upon its completion was during the process of consulting it. The native language for Haiti is Creole, which I did not speak. Using hand signals and communication, I was able to direct when I showed them what tools I needed or what could be done. The other moment was when I showed a little boy the Geodome for the first time. He was the younger brother of a boy who helped me. He was about 5 years old. I guided him over to the Geodome and showed him how to swing on it. I invited the other boys and girls to join in. The reaction from them all was excitement and joy! It is a moment I will never forget. If there are a few things I had learned from my project, they are perseverance, risk-taking and stepping out of my own comfort zone. What inspired me to take action for my project was the fact that I enjoy helping others. Traveling outside the country to another place showed me things from a different perspective such as learning a new language, inspiring others and overall creating that connection of love and help that was needed. The biggest challenge for my project was the transportation matter. As I had mentioned, many clearances and requirements have to be met in order to ship items overseas to another country so having Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines to be a helpful partner in my project made it all the difference. Another was the language barrier. Not only did I learn a bit of Creole but I managed to use international hand signals and communication to talk with the native people and interact with them. My mom and my family were a big help in my project. They were the ones who motivated me for my project and helped me out along the process, the Haitian Consulate of Orlando for meeting with me to plan where to build and deliver the donations, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines for transporting the items overseas and of course Girl Scouts, for inspiring me to achieve the Gold Award and building the courage, confidence and character to make a difference in the world. My advice for any Girl Scout or anyone who wants to help out, you don’t have to say in your community to make a difference – you can take it globally or internationally! Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and expand your knowledge of ways to help others in the amazing world that we live in, especially in foreign countries where we can connect and understand each other. Any act of help or service goes a long way and it starts with you. What do you want to change? How can your service impact others? What effect will it have?

It’s not very often that most of us get to speak to former professionals. Some are public figures in broadcasting or coaching, some move on to other careers, and some slip away from the crowds and make a life for themselves with their families. Those that are public often seem, at least to me, unreachable. You can see them, you may even say hello, but to actually sit down and have a chat is not something most of us will get the chance to do.   John, of the Saints FC Podcast, has managed to track down several former pros for the podcast, and I truly enjoy those episodes because I learn so much about the team and the players of the time, a time before I began following the red and white stripes, before I began singing “Oh When the Saints” at 4:00am most Saturdays, before I began calling it football. For that reason, I feel especially honored have had the chance to speak with former Saints’ and Finland goalkeeper Antti Niemi. If you have been a fan of Saints since the early 2000s then you will know Antti. The blonde haired shot stopper is a fan favorite remembered for his cat like reflexes and acrobatic saves in goal.   But, prior to doing this interview with him, I didn’t really know him at all. So, in the very short time between learning about the opportunity and actually speaking with him, I enjoyed learning about him and his career, watching highlight videos and reading up on other interviews he had done. My hope is that the interview is slightly different than what he would have been asked elsewhere. I didn’t want to do the same old interview, but I hope the interview I did is enjoyed by whoever listens. There are so many other people out there probably better suited to do this interview, but I am grateful for the chance to speak to such a thoughtful, talented, kind and hardworking person.   Antti is still active in football. In addition to coaching for Finland he likes to spend time fishing and with his family. He is on Instagram @udde72.   Special thanks to Jamie Grant for setting this interview up. Hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Littlest PetCast. In today's episode we look at a fantastic episode in the series, "Mean Isn't Your Color" with story by Mitch Larson and Cory Powell, teleplay by Cory Powell, and directed by Dallas Parker. In this shining example of an episode, Roger says he has a date to a Charity Ball, which Blythe freaks out about. Blythe becomes too focused on what's stressing her out that she doesn't realize that she's stressing out Penny Ling because of a sketch mixup.Should people cry alone? Is the reason the Littlest Pet Shop not using a Brown Bear of any kind because putting clothing on Brown Bears is Build-A-Bear's thing? Why is it pronounced "Leinnerhosen" when it's spelled "Lederhosen"? Should more kids shows tackle the effects of anxiety? Why is Roger just the sweetest? Who wouldn't want to watch Lawnmower Wars? Also, #RogerforDreamDaddy2

The "Ogre" calls Gordon and threatens to stop the investigation. Gordon and Bullock investigate the first victim of the killer. Following the incident with Reggie, Bruce and Selina attend the Wayne Enterprises' Charity Ball with Barbara Kean where Selina steals keys from Sid Banderslaw (Michael Potts), one of the Directors who sent Reginald Payne to Wayne Manor. Cobblepot hires a group of gunmen to kill Maroni, but Sal pays a visit to the club where he reveals to Oswald's mother that her son is a killer. Oswald swears to Maroni that he will pay. Nygma tries to protect Kristin Kryngle from her boyfriend Tom Dougherty, but goes too far when he stabs him a dozen times and has a psychotic breakdown. Gordon, Bullock, and Essen identifiy the killer as Jason Skolimsky, the son of Constance van Groot's butler Jakob Skolimsky (Daniel Davis) who went under the van Groot last name only to be rejected by his adoptive mother Constance. Because of this, he changed his face and identity in a local hospital where he found his first victim. To his horror, Gordon realizes that the "Ogre" knew about him from the Charity Gallery which Gordon visited a long time ago with Barbara meaning that she is the target. Upon learning from Selina that Barbara is not there, Gordon works to find her. The "Ogre" shows Barbara his special room.
