Today's podcast features guest Mark Hoover. Mark works for SimpliFaster in a coaching and technical consulting capacity and is the Director of Athletic Performance at Metrolina Christian Academy in Indian Trail, North Carolina. Coach Hoover started his career coaching football at both the high school and NCAA levels. After spending nearly 20 years in the dual role of sport coach/strength coach (including 11 years as a head football coach), he made the transition to full-time strength and conditioning in 2015. Mark is a growth minded coach who is continually evolving his training process. Mark is continually evaluating his program based bettering one's abilities on the field of play. The qualities it takes to be a weight room warrior are not the same as the fundamental speed and decision-making elements happening in the game itself. As an individual who was better in the weight room than he was in sport, Mark has dedicated his own process in a different direction for those athletes he works with, doing what he can to ensure that they are adept movers, in addition to being strong and robust. On today's podcast, Mark talks about his approach to building game speed, rehearsed vs. problem solving agility movements, the role of basketball in overall movement development, and we finish with a brief chat on the role of the 1x20 strength system in Mark's program. This show delved into some really important concepts of athlete development, and although it primarily discusses work done with high school athletes, the concepts are helpful for those on all levels of performance. Coach Donnie Quinn is one of the most successful coaches I know. He's had a tremendous run in women's basketball on both the High School and Collegiate levels. He's won state championships in both Louisiana and Alabama. Donnie stands out to me because of his "thinking outside the box" mentality. He has a very unique formula for attacking a full court press that not enough people utilize. This nugget alone is worth the listen.

Jen Hoover, a three-time All-ACC selection in women's basketball and current the all-time wins leader as women's basketball coach at Wake Forest, joins host Kevin Smith on this week's podcast. On today's podcast, Coach Hoover discusses her favorite Demon Deacon memory, the challenges the last year brought on her team, how she and her staff coaches during the offseason and her reputation as a player developer. ---------------------- Hoover was in a class of her own during her time as a student-athlete on Reynolda Campus. Playing under her maiden name, Jenny Mitchell, Hoover played for the Deacs from 1987-1991. During her freshman season, Mitchell helped Wake Forest to its first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament, where she scored the winning basket over Villanova to advance to the second round. Her 1,728 career points led the Demon Deacon record books for over 20 years until they were surpassed by Dearica Hamby. The pair remain the only two Deacs to surpass 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in program history. Hoover still holds WFU career records for field goals (763), field goal percentage (.607) and double-doubles (50). Hoover was named to three All-ACC teams during her career, and was a Fast Break All-American her final three seasons in Black and Gold. She was named to the 50th Anniversary Team by the ACC during the 2002-2003 season, and was inducted into the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. Following her playing career, Hoover began coaching women's basketball at the collegiate level, with stops at Cal, Virginia, Memphis, James Madison, East Carolina, VCU and Missouri-Kansas City. She was hired as the head coach at her alma mater in 2012, after coaching one season as head coach at High Point University. Since returning to Winston-Salem, Hoover has set the program record for career wins with 126, and took the Deacs back to the NCAA Tournament in 2021, the first berth for Wake Forest since her own freshman season. She's coached players to All-ACC teams seven times as head coach, and has coached the Deacs' first and second ever WNBA draft picks (Hamby, Ivana Raca).

Coach Moseley talks to each player every two weeks and keeps an updated chart of all of his players where he adds the date and discussions he has had with them. If winning isn’t fun, then why are you doing it? Tweetable Quotes: “I’ve been at Hoover (High School) for five years. This will be my 6th year, and we’ve had a pretty fun run here. We’ve had a lot of college players and a lot of great young men that we’ve been able to coach.” – Adam Moseley “In Alabama, we have some different rules, I know every state does. Essentially, we can spend as much time as we want in strength training and conditioning with our kids. There really isn’t a limit on that.” – Adam Moseley “We hire out a company called Godspeed. The guy’s name is Lance Rhodes and he started this business years ago. He is a Hoover graduate. Almost every NFL guy that lives in Birmingham, it seems like, trains with him.” – Adam Moseley “The best athlete on the mound means that in the 7th inning of the biggest game of the year he’s able to make the adjustment that he has to make to get the guy out, whether it is all working for him, or it is not.” – Adam Moseley “If you are doing the same drills for everybody, 25% of them are getting better, 25% of them are not getting any better, 25% are getting worse, and 25% are hurt.” – Adam Moseley “Any time you start sharing sweat, and you are all sweating together, I think the culture builds right away.” – Adam Moseley “First and foremost, I think it goes into who you are hiring. You need to hire guys that fit the development profile that you are looking for. I want to hire a guy that wants to be a life-long learner.” – Adam Moseley “I’m not a big, giant ‘rule sheet’ guy. Our program is not full of tons of rules. To me, the more rules you put out there, the more that they start looking for ways they can get around them.” – Adam Moseley Resources Mentioned: Ahead of the Curve Podcast Twitter: @AOTC_podcast Adam Moseley: Linkedin Twitter Facebook Instagram Adam Moseley’s Email: AMoseley@Hoover.K12.AL.US
