Drilled to Write: Becoming a Cadet Writer at a Senior Military College (Utah State UP, 2022) offers a rich account of US Army cadets navigating the unique demands of Army writing at a senior military college. In this longitudinal case study, J. Michael Rifenburg follows one cadet, Logan Blackwell, for four years and traces how he conceptualizes Army writing and Army genres through immersion in military science classes, tactical exercises in the Appalachian Mountains, and specialized programs like Airborne School. Drawing from research on rhetorical genre studies, writing transfer, and materiality, Drilled to Write speaks to scholars in writing studies committed to capturing how students understand their own writing development. Collectively, these chapters articulate four ways Blackwell leveraged resources through ROTC to become a cadet writer at this military college. Each chapter is dedicated to one year of his undergraduate experience with focus on curricular writing for his business management major and military science classes as well as his extracurricular writing, like his Ballroom Dance Club bylaws and a three-thousand-word short story. In Drilled to Write, Rifenburg invites readers to see how cadets are positioned between civilian and military life--a curiously liminal space where they develop as writers. Using Army ROTC as an entry into genre theory and larger conversations about the role higher education plays in developing Army officers, he shows how writing students develop genre awareness and flexibility while forging a personal identity. Episode Summary: Ricky Hall got his start in franchising as a franchisee for GNC. He built up his portfolio over ten years to run five stores. After exiting GNC, Ricky was a franchisee for another brand for three years. He then decided to start his own brand under the name NutritionHQ. In 2020, Ricky became a franchisor and currently has two locations. Key Ideas: One of Ricky's biggest challenges on the franchisor side is properly vetting his first 10 franchisees to set up the organization for success Ricky has walked both sides and is committed to being a ‘franchisee-friendly' franchisor Developing a strong brand identity for NutritionHQ came first and is now helping with his marketing efforts Ricky recognizes the importance of relationship building as he works to make his brand a part of the community About Ricky Hall: Ricky Hall (the founder and resident storyteller) has been running successful nutrition franchises for more than 15 years. His experiences and expertise are what have shaped the NutritionHQ brand. If you ever saw Ricky you'd be shocked that he ever struggled with health (those muscles are no joke) But back in his Military College days, Ricky struggled with his fitness and body image. Dr. Dena Garner is a professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance, the Director of Undergraduate Research and the Assistant Provost for Research and Policy at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. Dr. Garner is best known in fitness circles for her work with performance mouthpieces, including helping to develop the technology behind the AIRWAAV mouthpiece.   Dena started working at The Citadel in 2004 while completing her post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Neurology at the Medical University of South Carolina, also located in Charleston. Before her move to Charleston, she worked at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon where she also received her doctoral degree in exercise physiology. She received her Master's degree from the University of South Carolina in exercise physiology and an undergraduate degree from Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina.   Dr. Garner has been working in the area of mouthpiece use and effect on human performance since 2005 with studies that have focused on reaction time, lactate, and cortisol and the effect of mouthpiece use on these parameters. In addition, her research has focused on mouthpiece use during steady state exercise and effects on oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange as well as the proposed mechanisms for positive effects on airway dynamics in a healthy population.   In addition to research in the area of mouthpiece use and effect on human performance, Dr. Garner is involved in a research study which encompasses testing and evaluating physiologic neuro-assessment devices in healthy versus traumatic brain injury populations. Related to this research she was awarded a multi-year grant from the Henry Jackson Foundation to assess neurologic assessment devices in healthy populations.   Backed by 15 years of research conducted with athletes at cadets at The Citadel – the AIRWAAV Performance Mouthpiece offers a more efficient way for high-intensity and endurance athletes — including lifters — to open their airways and optimize their performance. CT Scans prove the mouthpiece increases the width of your airway an average of 9%. INCREASED ENDURANCE Reduces respiratory rate by 20%, resulting in less lactic acid production. FASTER RECOVERY TIMES Reduces cortisol build-up by up to 50% after intense workouts, improving recovery times.   Timestamps 0:00 - Introduction to show. 2:55 - Interview starts 4:37 - The Citadel is a Military College in South Carolina, how did you end up at a Military College? 6:46 - Your expertise in the area of airways for runners, cyclists, and Triathletes is well documented. Where did your desire to research and understand human performance start? 11:58 - Were you an athlete growing up? Do you come from an athletic background? 15:42 - When it was first brought to you to research the airways, were you skeptical or unsure if this was work that you could find the passion and desire you clearly have now? 21:24 - Who first had the concept that a mouthpiece could be a gamechanger in the way we breathe? 23:09 - Dr Garner explains the science in how a mouthpiece can help us breathe better in particularly when it comes to strength and endurance performance. 25:52 - How does nose breathing compare to mouth breathing? Is one better than the other? 27:00 - Have you been testing on elite athletes? 31:08 - What is the best way to get started with a mouthpiece from AIRWAAV? 33:51 - Dr. Garner explains how the mouthpiece helps the recovery process. 35:24 - How can an athlete test their training and compare their exertion rate using a mouthpiece? 37:31 - How has the mouthpiece evolved over the 17 years you've been researching and developing? 40:10 - Where do you see this technology going in the future other than within the elite sports arena? 44:29 - What are some of the research data numbers that you have seen pre and post exercise? 49:24 - Dr. Garner explains the research into concussion recovery and how the mouthpiece enhances cerebral blood flow. 53:13 - Some fun questions to wrap up this conversation and to get to know Dr. Dena Garner even more. Congresswoman Nancy Mace grew up in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. She is the daughter of a retired Army General and a retired school teacher. Before being sworn into Congress, Nancy earned accolades as one of the most fiscally conservative members of the South Carolina General Assembly. She is also one of the most pro-conservation lawmakers in that state. She grew up in Goose Creek, South Carolina, and dropped out of high school at the age of 17. She immediately became a waitress at the Waffle House. After earning her high school diploma a few months later, she entered The Citadel (the Military College of South Carolina), where she was the school's first female to graduate from its corps of cadets in 1999. In 2004, Nancy earned a master's degree from the University of Georgia. She is the author of In the Company of Men: A Woman at The Citadel, published by Simon and Schuster in 2001. In 2008, she started her own company. Her background in business is in technology, PR, and marketing, and more recently, commercial real estate before coming to Congress. Amongst her other achievements and responsibilities, Nancy is a single mom of two children, aged 12 and 14. She also has two cats, Tyler and Tiger, and a puppy named Liberty. In this episode… Being the first female to graduate from The Citadel, Congresswoman Nancy Mace was taught a lot of valuable life lessons. She learned the importance of being courageous, confident, and believing in herself. Now she's here to empower women to speak up for themselves, for others, and to give a voice to the voiceless. Nancy advises fellow women leaders to never quit until they achieve what they want. Other people's opinions and perceptions should never define who they are or what they are capable of doing. If a woman doesn't believe in herself, then others will not believe in her and her abilities. Congresswoman Nancy Mace is Andrea Heuston's guest in this episode of the Lead Like A Woman Show where she talks about being the first female to graduate from The Citadel and how that impacted her work in Congress. Nancy also talks about her experience growing up in a military family, the lessons she learned from working as a waitress at Waffle House, and how she runs her own business. Stay tuned.

Dr. Dan Bornstein is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina.  Dan began working at The Citadel after completing his Ph.D in Exercise Science from the University of South Carolina.  Dan is not a conventional professor. Prior to earning his Ph.D, Dan was the CEO of two fitness companies in Arizona. His research focuses on lack of physical preparedness in the United States as a national security issue. US military organizations are having a difficult time recruiting qualified candidates because of a lack of physical preparedness amongst the population.  Dan came on the show to speak about the programs The Citadel offers in Exercise Science and Tactical Readiness. Though The Citadel is primarily a military college with an active Corps of Cadets, it has opened it's doors to active duty military members and Veterans who want to attend the institution without being members of the Corps of Cadets.  This leaves a world of opportunity open to Veterans who want to get an education from one of the best colleges in the country.  To learn more about The Citadel, and it's Exercise Science program, head over to Citadel.edu.

It's a different perspective from a different panel, but the mission remains the same: educate the misinformed, activate the undiscovered leaders, awaken those on the fringe. The Launchcast premieres Part 3 The Protest Series: "How to Be a Human Being" with episode 129, our second in a series of panel discussions. Last week we spoke to 2 teenagers and 3 twenty-somethings who are leading the fight in their generation. In this episode, George has a discussion with 2 eclectic panelists that have a lifetime of stories to tell, a wealth of knowledge to impart, and 2 microphones to do it with. FULL TRANSPARENCY: In order to have a conversation that considers all perspectives, we had 2 white guests booked onto this episode. They backed out at the last minute. This isn't about color, but in order to work together towards progress, EVERYONE who wants to show up needs to ACTUALLY show up. At the tail end of the conversation George turned this panel into an UNPANEL and gave our guests the opportunity to ask George any questions that the conversation had awakened within them. This was a damn good one. Panelists include: Dr. Paul Prosper: Paul as born in Kingston, Jamaica & moved to New York, at the age of 10. Paul finished up high school at the Fork Union Military Academy (FUMA), an all-boys boarding military high school in Virginia. He attended The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina and upon graduation from The Citadel, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He has since received his Masters in Human Relations and his doctorate in management. Dr. Prosper is now an Active Duty Major and is a Senior Director on the Air Force's $330 million mighty E-3 Sentry, Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS). Paul was an Assistant Professor of Management in the Management Department at the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO up until Sept. 2019. Paul also runs Prosperous Investments, LLC, a is a business real estate investment company that also has a tremendous outreach program that provides scholarships to graduating high school seniors. Hana Getachew:  Brooklyn based designer Hana Getachew started Bolé Road Textiles out of a desire to merge her love of Ethiopian handwoven fabrics with her career in interior design.  During her eleven years at a major New York City architecture firm Hana realized her affinity for vibrant colors and graphic patterns was a direct result of her upbringing in a home filled with amazing traditional Ethiopian textiles. Her designs for Bolé Road are an homage to that cultural inheritance and a reflection of her own personal global modern aesthetic. Hana was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. After a few years in Montreal, her family settled in New York. A graduate of Cornell University with a degree in interior design, Hana was formerly Associate Principal at Studios Architecture in New York City. Dr. Sarah Imam teaches advanced physiology and environmental physiology at the Citadel. She helps describe for us on the podcast what our human body has to endure in extreme environments, including microgravity environments like the astronauts work and live in.  Our future in space requires our full understanding of the space environment, and the effects it will have on us as humans. While Sarah’s perspective is optimistic, the space environment is not looking like a favorable one for our human bodies.   Here’s are some interesting questions Dr. Sarah and I ponder together:    When you go into these extreme environments (like space), there are so many detrimental effects on our human body, so understanding the impacts of microgravity is going to be more important as we humans continue explore space.  Or, are we just not intended to be space travelers? Sarah asks me what I’m likely to do when I fall into the icy cold water… and the answer is the complete opposite what I would have thought… Is it possible to mind over matter our bodies into health?    “When your body is aware that it will be exposed to a different environment, it helps you to be better prepared.”-Dr. Sarah Wallace from Casual Space Podcast    About Dr. Sarah: Sarah A.
