Emily Dalfrey lives across the street from Niblett's Bluff Cemetery, where generations of her family are buried, in Vinton, Louisiana. In 2016, a period of prolonged rainfall caused flooding so severe that people could drive boats over the cemetery. The water put so much pressure on the graves that some of the vaults, which are located near the surface, popped open. Some of Dalfrey's own family members' caskets were carried away and deposited in her yard.Unsure how to restore the cemetery, the community contracted Gulf Coast Forensic Solutions, a company that helps people locate and rebury loved ones after natural disasters damage cemeteries.Read the rest of this article on sciencefriday.com.Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Gettin' Air with Blair Niblett. Dr. Niblett is Associate Professor in the School of Education at Trent University. This episode was brought to you by Trent University's Centre for Teaching and Learning. The CTL produces a wonderful monthly newsletter called Teaching Notes and February's newsletter is focused on care and kindness in education. As such, Blair's journey to enact an ethic of care as a pedagogical paradigm is central to the discussion.

The Preseason and Postseason SI99 are a collection of the best 99 players in the current recruiting cycle put together by Sports Illustrated and today's guest John Garcia Jr . Arch Manning, Malik Muhammad, Johntay Cook, Cedric Baxter, Derrick Williams, Derion Gullette, Anthony Hill, and Colton Vasek all made the SI99, but where do they rank amongst their respective position groups? John Garcia has Arch Manning ranked as the 9th overall player in the country and the third best Quarterback behind UCLA commit Dante Moore and Tennessee commit Nico Iamaleava, contrary to most sites that have Arch as the top player and top quarterback. We discuss what went into this decision with John. Also, Texas signee Ryan Niblett made the preseason 99, but was left off of the postseason SI99 that was made available last week. John Garcia discusses what went into the decision to leave Niblett off of his final 99 for the 2023 class. Also, we know that the Texas 2023 recruiting class is explosive from top to bottom, not just including the 8 Signees that made the list. If the list was to include more than 99 players, which Texas signee would be most likely to be added to the list? John talks about how Ryan Niblett, Deandre Moore and Tausili Akana all received consideration. This 2023 class has the chance to do something really special at The University of Texas, as evidenced by eight percent of the SI99 consisting of future players at the 40 acres. Texas has recruited at the level of Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State and LSU give or take in recent years but the on field product has not been able to rival that of those schools who have all either played for a National Championship or won a National Championship. It's time for Texas to get back on top. Hook EmSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!LinkedInLinkedIn jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. The Transfer portal has been open for about a week now and we have seen players from all across the country declaring to transfer from one university to another for various reasons. John Garcia Jr., Director of Football Recruiting at Sports Illustrated, joins us to discuss the madness that is setting up for one of the craziest offseasons we have seen thus far. One of the biggest names in the transfer portal is Hudson Card. What type of impact will Hudson Card have at another institution next season? In terms of traditional high school recruiting, Texas received a scare when they found out that Ryan Niblett would be taking an official visit to the University of Houston. Texas is also issuing a full court press on two prospects that previously committed to other schools. Anthony Hill who recently decommitted from Texas A&M, and Deandre Moore who is still committed to Louisville but is being recruited through the whistle. Last but not least, I get John's take on Coach Prime, Deion Sanders leaving Jackson State to take the job at Colorado. Escuchar audio

TITAN MISSILE MUSEUM HISTORY The Titan Missile Museum is the only remaining Titan II site open to the public, allowing you to re-live a time when the threat of nuclear war between the U.S. and the former Soviet Union was a reality. The Titan II was capable of launching from its underground silo in 58 seconds and could deliver a nine megaton thermonuclear warhead to its target more than 6,000 miles (approximately 10,000 km) away in less than thirty minutes. For more than two decades, 54 Titan II missile complexes across the United States stood “on alert” 24 hours a day, seven days a week, heightening the threat of nuclear war or preventing Armageddon, depending upon your point of view. AN ARIZONA TREASURE Proclaimed an Arizona Treasure by former Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, the Titan Missile Museum is a unique facility that is comprised of two parts: The Count Ferdinand von Galen Titan Missile Museum Education and Research Center, and the Titan Missile National Historic Landmark. The Count Ferdinand von Galen Titan Missile Museum Education and Research Center is situated directly adjacent to the launch complex and houses an exhibit gallery, museum store, classroom, and an archival storage area. The Titan Missile National Historic Landmark is former Titan II launch complex 571-7. This former operational missile site was originally part of the 571st Strategic Missile Squadron (SMS), 390th Strategic Missile Wing (SMW), Davis-Monthan Air Force Base (AFB), Arizona. It is the sole remaining Titan II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) complex of the 54 that were “on alert” during the Cold War between 1963 and 1987. FROM SWORD TO PLOWSHARE Launch complex 571-7 came off alert on November 11, 1982. Work to turn the missile site into a museum began in February of 1983, when Col Paul Comeaux, commander of the 390th SMW, contacted Charles Niblett, president of the Tucson Air Museum Foundation, the predecessor of the Arizona Aerospace Foundation. Colonel Comeaux proposed that the Foundation consider operating one of the soon-to-be-deactivated missile sites around Tucson as a museum. Niblett contacted Col Hugh Matheson, USAF (Ret.), the former deputy commander for maintenance at the 390th SMW, and Lt Col Orville Doughty, USAF (Ret.), the former commander of the 390th Missile Maintenance Squadron. Together, these three men took on the tremendous task of convincing the Foundation Board, the Air Force, and the Tucson community that this project was both worthwhile and feasible. By September of 1985, the necessary parties were in agreement and the paperwork was complete. The Air Force would retain ownership of missile site 571-7, but lease it to Pima County. Pima County, in turn, would sublease the site to the Foundation for the purpose of operating the Titan Missile Museum. Before the Foundation could open the Titan Missile Museum, several modifications had to be made to the missile site. All of these modifications were made for the purpose of demonstrating that launch complex 571-7 is no longer an operational missile site. For example, before missile N-10 could go on display in the launch duct, holes were cut in each of its propellant tanks and in the heat shield of the Reentry Vehicle. Then the missile was displayed on the surface of the site for 30 days to allow satellites to confirm that it was no longer operational. After the missile was installed in the launch duct, the silo closure door was permanently placed in the half-open position (six huge concrete blocks prevent it from opening any further) and a large window was placed over the open portion of the launch duct to facilitate visitor and satellite viewing. The Titan Missile Museum opened its doors to the public on May 21, 1986. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/loren-alberts/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loren-alberts/support

The explosive growth of e-commerce during the pandemic has had tremendous benefits for consumers, but it has also raised concerns about the growing size of major industry players such as Amazon, Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook. Europe and the US have moved to impose antitrust measures and sweeping new competition policies against the titans of tech, and there are calls in Canada to do the same. MLI Domestic Policy Program Director Aaron Wudrick sat down with Anthony Niblett and Daniel Sokol to discuss why Canada doesn't need sweeping changes to competition policy to handle big tech and to propose solutions that would counter abuse of dominance and encourage compliance with the Competition Act. This podcast discussed Niblett and Sokol's recent MLI paper "Up to the task: Why Canadians don't need sweeping changes to competition policy to handle Big Tech."

What is the importance for humanity for its ability to travel? With contributions from many people and casting a totally refreshing view on people's deep-seated desire to travel, is a new book – Why Travel? – edited by Dr Matthew Niblett and Kris Beuret OBE, of the Independent Transport Commission. Leon Daniels OBE chats to them about editing the book, which has contributions from many people, not just in travel businesses, but beyond. In essence, it's an anthology of travel by a range of people, that also takes in the social aspects to understand our need to move and how it shapes our lives. Kris tells Leon that she was inspired to produce the book after being “fed up” with transport modelling “that assumes that travel is all about time saved.” The range of contributors shed a different viewpoint from the popularly-presented one that travel is unpleasant and something to be avoided. They mull over why commuting is beneficial, why an hour is the ideal commute and what we've done to replace it They discuss how much travel we need for our wellbeing, our complicated needs to travel and whether technology is the enemy. Considering transport policy, there's a discussion about whether we should move away from thinking about restricting travel to better travel, that then moves onto why ‘slower travel' can be better travel and the benefit of cheap travel. They conclude by examining what young people will do to change travel behaviours and how that fits with their generational view of the need to be ‘green'. https://bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/why-travel Kris Beuret Kris Beuret OBE is the Director of Social Research Associates (SRA). She is a sociologist, previously an academic, and a member of the Independent Transport Commission and Highways England's Research and Innovation Advisory Board. Kris has advised the House of Commons Transport Committee, TfL, the DfT and overseas governments on disability and diversity issues. Matthew Niblett Dr Matthew Niblett is Director of the Independent Transport Commission (ITC) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He oversees the ITC's research portfolio and has presented findings from this research to Ministers and Parliamentary Select Committee enquiries. Matthew holds a doctorate from the University of Oxford and was a Senior Research Associate at Oxford's Transport Studies Unit.

So here we are again, like so many countries around the world, in Lockdown. But as we've learned over the past year, this does not mean that business completely stops and many are finding innovative ways to continue operating and certainly preparing for the next phase: Post-vaccination. In this episode, we get to hear from three successful and innovative L&D leaders about what's happening in their teams, how they're preparing for what comes next and their hopes for the future. KEY TAKEAWAYS For many, previous lockdowns were seen as something of a holding pattern, a case of keeping heads above water. Now, operations are seeking to grow during lockdown. There is a huge value in bringing people together and holding a conversation around a table in order to share perspectives and experiences. There can never truly be a digital substitute for this. Experimentation and creativity have become the most productive way of re-shaping the work environment. It has made us realise that collaboration is the key to moving forward. The key to keeping our people motivated is to make sure that our values and our purpose are being effectively communicated and embraced. BEST MOMENTS 'People want to feel valued. They want to feel like they're working towards a unified purpose' 'L&D hasn't changed. This has just challenged us to make it even better' 'It all started with recognising that this is unusual, and that no one has all the answers' 'That creation of blended learning is very much what we're pushing for' VALUABLE RESOURC ES The Learning And Development Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-learning-development-podcast/id1466927523 ABOUT THE GUESTS Eva Adam Bio Eva Adam is Learning Design Lead at Philip Morris International providing innovative solutions that help the company to achieve its strategic objectives. Welcome to Uninhibited, a podcast with the mission to discuss taboo, multicultural, multi-generational, and multi-layered topics that matter to women. Our host, Dr. Makunda Abdul-Mbacke, is an Ivy-League trained OBGYN, practicing medicine in rural America. She is a mother, career professional, part of Generation X, and so much more.---*This podcast episode is a recording of a Facebook Live event.00:50 - Our episode opens with Reverend Keishawn R. Niblett, who is hosting the episode and interviewing Dr. Mbacke about the COVID-19 response in their local and faith communities, and what responsibilities we as individuals have to minimize the impact of the virus.2:15 - Dr. Mbacke starts with an introduction of herself, her professional background, and explains how COVID-19 in particular is catching her attention because of its negative effects on the black community. 5:27 - Reverend Keishawn asks if and how the local, rural healthcare system will be able to cope with a COVID-19 spike if it were to happen in their community. Dr. Mbacke explains that confirmed cases are just confirmations that the virus is already there, and there are probably many more people that are experiencing mild symptoms or are asymptomatic carriers. She explains that flattening the curve is to help the healthcare system, but there is still a shortage of PPE, ventilators, and hospital beds, especially in their smaller community.12:14 - Reverend Keishawn references a question posed in the chat about the availability of COVID-19 testing in the area. Dr. Mbacke says there are a few tests available at local doctor’s offices, as well as a testing clinic set up by the Department of Health at the Martinsville Speedway. Patients are also being screened for the virus before any surgical procedures.16:35 - The Reverend speaks about the Governor’s stay-at-home order and what limitations are now carefully being lifted. There are requirements that businesses and churches have to have in place in order to operate, and he asks Dr. Mbacke about how this may affect how people worship. She explains that life will definitely be different for a while, at least before a vaccine is developed, and the guidelines of the 50% occupancy are not the only rules to follow. Social distancing and staying with your home-unit is still critical in those types of gatherings.26:22 - Reverend Keishawn asks what resources to point people to for accurate information about COVID-19? Dr. Mbacke recommends referencing the Virginia Department of Health and the CDC website for accurate and up-to-date information about the virus, the spread, and what scientists are working on. They discuss the importance of understanding this information and following the Governor’s orders to ensure that everyone does their part to keep the community safe.28:16 - A listener chimes in with a statement for discussion about the safety of returning to church and how to care for each other by worshipping differently. He questions why there is pressure to reopen the state when there are still people getting sick. Dr. Mbacke agrees with the speaker’s point that the pressure to reopen is driven more by economics rather than science, and discusses how the response to reopening across the nation has been mixed.35:15 - Reverend Keishawn reads a chat question asking if there is a cost for COVID-19 testing and if insurance will cover it. Dr. Mbacke explains that the President has promised everyone who needs a test can get tested and insurance should cover these tests. However, there are not yet enough tests for anyone to get tested; usually, you have to exhibit symptoms or have close contact with an infected person to qualify for testing.36:42 - Another question concerns how long someone may be an asymptomatic carrier, not showing symptoms but still spreading the virus. Dr. Mbacke says there is definitely proof of asymptomatic transmission, but the window of how long someone may be contagious is still unknown.39:27 - Someone asks a question about healthy people wearing masks and potential cross contamination that can occur with wearing gloves in public. With exception of the N95 masks reserved for healthcare workers, Dr. Mbacke encourages the general public to wear cloth masks that cover the mouth and nose, even if you feel healthy. Wearing a mask protects your health and also the health of the people around you. As for gloves, you are easily exposed to cross contamination if you are not changing your gloves regularly, but these are critical supplies that first responders need first and foremost. 46:55 - Another question regards food safety and what to be aware of. Dr. Mbacke cautions against eating food that is exposed to respiratory droplets that can be expelled simply by talking. For example, it is best to avoid birthday party food and buffet style dinners that traditionally bring together lots of people. With grocery store food, there may be germs or virus cells living on the food packaging, but contamination on actual, cooked food is low. 50:25 - Dr. Mbacke asks the Reverend about his concerns about tithe in church and cautions around collecting cash. He explains that there is some movement towards digital giving, but also that church members are working to ensure that any cash donations are properly handled and sanitized. He emphasizes safety over everything and foresees online giving becoming the new way forward.52:30 - Reverend Keishawn thanks Dr. Mbacke for her time and her professional guidance on how to safely move forward in this situation. Dr. Mbacke ends with a reminder to us all that we must support each other during this time to prevent the spread of sickness, and that there is hope and a cure being worked on.1:00:27 - One final question asks if you can be reinfected once you have had COVID-19. Dr. Mbacke explains that it is still too early to know this for certain, but other countries like South Korea are looking into this as their country reopens and infections are spiking again. There is the potential that the virus can lay dormant for a while before resurfacing, but there are too many unknowns with COVID at this time. ---For guidance on COVID-19 requirements and limitations, please reference the Virginia Department of Health and the CDC Website. As the world copes with the Coronavirus pandemic, L&D departments are adapting to lead with digital solutions, to engage a remote workforce and influence their working. In this episode, Alice talks about how she's been leading with digital solutions, in her current and previous roles, and how she uses data, experimentation and a campaign approach to achieve real results. KEY TAKEAWAYS The new way of remote working is forcing innovation in digital learning through, which is a huge opportunity for L&D professionals to implement long-planned methodologies. We need to look at the problems before we attempt to fix them, analyse the data to see if the issue is authentic, evaluate the issues impact on people, and using our skills to ascertain the best way of making a difference. Every organisation is different. They are the composites of values, beliefs and core drivers, influenced greatly by the cultures we establish. They are as unique as a fingerprint. People will always approach challenges from their own perspectives, and through their own filters. It is the job of L&D to guide and engage people in doing so. L&D must always recognise that there are inefficiencies in any organisation, and unless we engage appropriately and at speed, we will only ever make peripheral differences. BEST MOMENTS ‘We have to be a little more thoughtful about what we're trying to do' ‘It's about developing an experiment that will move the needle' ‘You need to refine that part of you, otherwise this organisation is going to eat you up!' 'We should be thinking about designing for performance first' VALUABLE RESOURC ES The Learning And Development Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-learning-development-podcast/id1466927523 ABOUT THE GUEST Alice is a thoroughly modern L&D professional with a background of leading with digital solutions and bringing her team and organisation along with her. Today we celebrate the one year anniversary of the show and the man who wrote a flora of the Middle East. We'll learn about the German botanist who discovered mitosis and chloroplasts. We celebrate the 93rd birthday of an English-Australian gardener who learned to garden and survived during World War II. We'll honor the tremendous work of Kenya's garden activist and founder of the Green Belt Movement. Today's Unearthed Words feature words about April. We Grow That Garden Library™ with a book that was released 16 years ago today. And then, we'll wrap things up with the fascinating story of a whiskey baron who used his wealth to create an arboretum that is home to America's largest collection of Holly trees. But first, let's catch up on some Greetings from Gardeners Around the World and today's curated news. Subscribe Apple | Google | Spotify | Stitcher | iHeart Gardener Greetings Well, it's hard to believe that the show is already a year old. I started the show on April 1st because this month's name came from the Latin word aperio, meaning "to open [bud]," - so it was the perfect time to start something new. Plants outside and in are really beginning to grow now. Daisy and Sweet Pea are this month's birth flowers. To participate in the Gardener Greetings segment, send your garden pics, stories, birthday wishes and so forth to Jennifer@theDailyGardener.org And, to listen to the show while you're at home, just ask Alexa or Google to play The Daily Gardener Podcast. It's that easy. Curated News In chaotic times, gardening becomes therapy | Cleveland.com "As spring's arrival in the Northern Hemisphere coincides with government stay-at-home orders, the itch to get outside has turned backyard gardens into a getaway for the mind in chaotic times. Gardeners who already know that working with soil is a way to connect with nature say it helps take away their worries, at least temporarily. "I love to see things grow," Lindsay Waldrop said. "It's incredibly therapeutic." Families, too, are discovering that gardening gives cooped-up kids something to do, builds their self-esteem and brings variety to what has suddenly become a lot of time spent together. This home-grown attitude goes back to World War II when millions of people cultivated victory gardens to protect against potential food shortages while boosting patriotism and morale. Hollie Niblett, who lives near Kansas City, Kansas, hopes the victory gardens come back. Niblett, who has a degree in horticultural therapy, tends to a kitchen garden near her backdoor, perennial flowers, flowering trees and shrubs, and upper and lower grassy yards connected by a path through an area left in its natural condition. "There are so many things about it that feed my soul," she said. "Right now, more than anything, my garden gives me hope, gives me purpose, and provides a sense of connection to something bigger than myself." 811 - Call Before You Dig - And, right now - Don't. Add 811 in your phone contacts. Save it under "Digging." In the notes, add a reminder to call at least three days before you dig. Alright, that's it for today's gardening news. Now, if you'd like to check out my curated news articles and blog posts for yourself, you're in luck, because I share all of it with the Listener Community in the Free Facebook Group - The Daily Gardener Community. There's no need to take notes or search for links - the next time you're on Facebook, search for Daily Gardener Community and request to join. I'd love to meet you in the group. Important Events 1838 Today is the birthday of George Edward Post. We remember George because he wrote a Flora of the Middle East. Westerners were delighted because, for the first time, it was written in English, and they could understand it. George botanized in Syria, which is where he lived most of his life. He was in Syria, serving as a missionary and doctor. In his spare time, he would be off collecting plants and working on his Flora. George was a man who had tremendous energy and stamina. He worked long hours, and many colleagues acknowledged that he accomplished more than most folks in a 24-hour period. In his personal life, it turns out that George had the ability to fall asleep quickly, which no doubt helped him recharge on-demand and as needed. One account of George's tremendous lust for life and for plant collecting relayed that he would go off into the mountains on horseback. The story goes that George was such a good horseman, he could collect specimens without getting off his horse. He was allegedly able to lean below his saddle and reach way down to cut and collect a specimen. Then, he'd just sit back up and go on his way. At the end of his life, George was aware that his body was worn out, and he said something to that effect in the days before he died. Around that same time, he received a visitor who knew just how to revive his spirits. The guest placed a few pieces of ripe wheat in his hand as a symbol of the harvest and of the specimens George had spent a lifetime studying. It also served as a reminder of the treasured bible passage: "To everything, there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted." 1805 Today is the birthday of the German botanist Hugo von Mohl. The greatest "botanist of his day," it said in one newspaper. A German botanist, he was the first to propose that new cells are formed by cell division. Mitosis was discovered by Hugo von Mohl. And, in 1837, he discovered chloroplasts - something von Mohl called Chlorophyllkörnen, which translates to "a grain a chlorophyll." Forty-seven years later, the Polish-German botanist Eduard Strasburger shortened the term Chlorophyllkörnen to Chloroplast. Von Mohl described chloroplasts as discrete bodies within the green plant cell. Today we know that chloroplasts are the food producers of the cell. Chloroplasts are only found in plant cells, and they convert light energy from the sun into sugar; so without chloroplasts, there would be no photosynthesis. In 1846, von Mohl described the sap in plant cells as "the living substance of the cell," and he also created the word "protoplasm." 1927 Today is the 93rd birthday of English-born Australian horticulturalist, conservationist, author, broadcaster, and television personality Peter Cundall. A Tasmanian gardener, Peter was the friendly host of the long-running TV show Gardening Australia - one of the first shows committed to 100% organic practices and practical advice. Peter inspired both young and old to the garden. In his epic "lemon tree episode," Peter got a little carried away and essentially finished pruning when the tree was little more than a stump. Thereafter, Cundallisation was synonymous with over-pruning. Peter learned to garden as a little boy. His first garden was a vegetable patch on top of an air raid shelter in Manchester, England. His family was impoverished. His father was an abusive alcoholic. Two of his siblings died of malnutrition. Through it all, the garden brought stability, nourishment, and reprieve. Of that time, Peter's recalls, "Lying in bed in the morning waiting for it to be light, so I could go out and get going in my garden. I used to think there was some gas given out by the soil that produced happiness." 1940 Today is the birthday of the Kenyan ecologist and first female Kenyan Ph.D. and professor Wangari Maathai ("One-Garry" - rhymes with starry - "Ma-TH-EYE") Wangari was the founder of the Green Belt Movement. She fought for environmental protection and women's empowerment by working with communities to plant "green belts" of trees. Today, the Green Belt Movement has planted "over 45 million trees across Kenya to combat deforestation, stop soil erosion, and generate income for women and their families." In 2004, Wangari became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel committee recognized "her contribution to sustainable development, democracy, and peace." Wangari authored four books: The Green Belt Movement, Unbowed: A Memoir; The Challenge for Africa; and Replenishing the Earth. Wangari died from ovarian cancer in 2011 at the age of 71. Wangari said, "We think that diamonds are very important, gold is very important, all these minerals are very important. We call them precious minerals, but they are all forms of the soil. But that part of this mineral that is on top, like it is the skin of the earth, that is the most precious of the commons." "Using trees as a symbol of peace is in keeping with a widespread African tradition. For example, the elders of the Kikuyu carried a staff from the thigi tree that, when placed between two disputing sides, caused them to stop fighting and seek reconciliation. Many communities in Africa have these traditions." "When we plant trees, we plant the seeds of peace and hope." Unearthed Words Here are some poignant words about this time of year. The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year. — Mark Twain, American writer & humorist "The first of April, some do say, Is set apart for All Fools' Day. But why the people call it so, Nor I, nor they themselves do know. But on this day are people sent On purpose for pure merriment." — Poor Robin's Almanac, 1790 The April winds are magical, And thrill our tuneful frames; The garden walks are passional To bachelors and dames." ― Ralph Waldo Emerson, American essayist and poet Men are April when they woo, December when they wed; Maids are May when they are maids, but the sky changes when they are wives. — Shakespeare, As You Like It, Act IV Scene 1 "[W] ell-apparell'd April on the heel Of limping winter treads…" — Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, Act 1 Scene 2 Grow That Garden Library On the Wild Side by Keith Wiley It's hard to believe that this book was published on this day already sixteen years ago in 2004. The subtitle to this book is "Experiments in the New Naturalism." Keith created his own wild garden in the early 2000s after being inspired by rural England. He also discovered an entire world of influence as he studied New England roadsides, the Colorado Rockies, Swiss Alpine Meadows, and the South African savannas. In this book, Keith strives to capture "only the spirit of wild plantings and never attempt to replicate exactly any landscape or combination of plants." Keith has learned to focus on form, color, and placement of plants. His attention to detail is what makes his approach work so well. Keith was an early advocate of grouping plants into plant communities. He loves it when plants self-seed - especially when they create beauty in unanticipated ways. Keith's book shares many of his favorite plants and plant groupings. He offers tons of advice and ideas for gardens. in this book, he's hoping to inspire us to get creative, "freeing your own creative inner spirit from the straitjacket of horticultural tradition." You can get a used copy of On the Wild Side by Keith Wiley and support the show, using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for under $8. Today's Botanic Spark 1945 Today is the anniversary of the death of American businessman Isaac Wolfe Bernheim. Bernheim made a fortune selling and distilling whiskey - and in turn, he used some of his wealth to create the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest. In 1931, the Frederick Law Olmsted firm was asked to design the park. They created roadways, paths, and natural areas, planted trees, and turned the farmland back into meadows, lawns, and forest. Sparing no expense, Bernheim provided the capital to add lakes, rivers, and ponds for "an enlivening effect." Nineteen years later, in 1950, the Bernheim Forest officially opened and was ultimately given to the people of Kentucky in trust. Bernheim is the largest privately-owned natural area in Kentucky. Today, the arboretum's holly collection is among the best in North America, with more than 700 specimens representing over 350 individual species and cultivars. Love is like the wild rose-brier; Friendship like the holly tree. The holly is dark when the rose-brier blooms, But which will bloom most constantly? — Emily Brontë, author The holly collection features 176 American Holly (Ilex opaca), 44 Japanese Holly (Ilex crenata), over 50 deciduous hollies (Ilex decidua, Ilex verticillata, Ilex serrata, and hybrids), and 19 cultivars of Inkberry (Ilex glabra) - as well as many specialty hybrids. The arboretum is also home to maples, crab apples, conifers (including dwarf conifers), oaks, buckeyes, ginkgoes, ornamental pears and dogwoods. There is also a sun and shade trail, a quiet garden, and a garden pavilion. By 1994, the State of Kentucky made Bernheim the state's official arboretum. A true visionary, Bernheim wrote that "nothing is static in this world." He appreciated that the natural world was constantly going through continuous change. He believed that people needed to spend time connecting with nature. In August of 1939, Bernheim set up some conditions for his forest in a letter to the trustees, and he proposed the following rules for the forest: No discussion of religion or politics, no trading or trafficking. . . No distinction will be shown between rich or poor, white or colored. My vision embraces an edifice, beautiful in design,... It may be made of marble or of native stone. . . . Within it, there will be an art gallery . . . . Therein there will be busts in bronze of men and women whose names have risen to places of distinctive honor in Kentucky. A museum of natural history containing specimens of every animal … of this hemisphere... . . . a tall steel pole … will float the American Flag… [and] children… will be told the story of liberty. To all, I send the invitation to come . . . to re-create their lives in the enjoyment of nature . . . in the park which I have dedicated ... and which I hope will be kept forever free.
In this episode, we use the wide-angle lens. Joined by Dr. Robin Niblett, director of the think tank Chatham House, we talk about the state of the world order and what role technology plays. We also zoom in on the transatlantic relationship, the unique approach to technology in Europe - and since Robin is a Brit we don’t avoid talking about Brexit…
Once I decided I was going to go full-time into expanding Powerful Ladies, I knew I needed a support system to keep me accountable and on track. The universe knew it too and at a Friends-Giving, two friends of mine Madelyn & Jessica asked if I wanted to join them in a book club that was going to read a Course in Miracles. It was exactly what I needed. Our other friend Jamie joined, too. These three women, who I had known for five years and we had mostly spent time together in large groups suddenly became some of my most important supporters. On this episode they talk about the importance of being part of a group that’s equally committed to being up to big things, where they go for inspiration and how with all our different stories and backgrounds we’re all looking for our version of an amazing life.

With the unanimous passage of Marsy’s Law in the state House, Pennsylvania crime victims are closer than they’ve ever been to a constitutional guarantee to uphold their rights in court. And the stakes couldn’t be higher for those thrust into the court system against their will through the wrongdoing of another. We continue our series of interviews with the survivors of crimes in Pennsylvania. Angela Niblett has first-hand experience navigating the Pennsylvania court system after she was attacked in her home by an armed assailant, Pittsburgh's so-called North Hills rapist. Angela shares her story with Making Marsy’s Law in the hopes that raising her voice can help other victims. Unlike some cases we’ve seen, she describes her experience with the criminal justice system as “textbook” and credits the police detectives, victim advocates and a strong assistant district attorney with honoring her rights and her voice at every step in the process. But she knows that’s not the case for every survivor in Pennsylvania. Notes: If you or someone you know is the victim of sexual assault or other crime please contact Pennsylvania's Office of Victim Advocate at 800-563-6399 or ova.pa.gov (https://ova.pa.gov/).

Welcome back to Nothing Shines Like Dirt Episode 27, featuring director/filmmaker Elyse Niblett. Her film "The Broken Ones" premiered at the Soho International Film Festival, lessons learned while directing a feature, and digging for the emotional life of your characters. Born and raised in California, Elyse began a life of performance as a ballet dancer. After thirteen years she began training in sketch and paint art. At 21 years of age she discovered acting. She graduated with a BFA in Screen Acting at Chapman University but it wasn't until a few years after graduating that she shifted her focus to directing. With the help of Tony Spiridakis and his Manhattan Film Institute, she made her debut film, The End of the World, about a woman at the end of her rope in a loveless marriage. At MFI, Elyse met Cece King, who would later hire her as the director for the Independent Feature Film, The Broken Ones, which just had its world premiere at the opening night of the SOHO Int'l Film Festival to a sold out theater. Last year Elyse created her production company, Gray Space Productions, with her long time colleague and friend, Blair Nichols. Through her company she has created video content for companies along with narrative short films. They are now in development with two separate feature films, with Elyse at the helm as director. Elyse was always drawn to storytelling and found her home behind the camera. Her background in acting has aided her interpretation of scripts and her ability to shape actor performances. She is beyond excited and grateful for the continued success of her first feature, The Broken Ones, and looks forward to many more. Her favorite part about film is the collaborative process, working with fellow creatives to build a narrative that strives to move, inspire and enlighten her viewers. She would not be here were it not for the tireless support of her family and friends.
