She has a Ph.D. in General Psychology, Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, and multiple state and national-level certifications related to mental health. Christina is a CrossFit Level 2 Trainer, a USAW Level 1 Coach, and is the owner of CrossFit Tailwinds. She takes a deep dive into why gym owners and healthcare professionals need to prioritize mental health in their gyms and coaching businesses, and how to identify signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression to better support those struggling in their gyms. She explained that mental and physical health are connected, and that gym owners should create a safe and inclusive environment. Additionally, they should be aware of common signs of anxiety and depression, such as changes in behavior, physical transformation, and isolation. Finally, she stressed the connection between community-based fitness and mental health, as it promotes bonding and releases hormones that reduce anxiety and depression. "The truth is that mental and physical health go hand in hand and if anything, I would argue that the mind is probably more important than the body for the sheer fact of it's the leader, right? So if the mind is right, then the body will follow." - Dr. Christina Migliara In this episode, you'll learn the following: How has the pandemic exposed mental health issues and how to create a safe space in your gym? Why should why owners care about mental health? What role can a CrossFit affiliate or boutique fitness facility have in mental health? What signs and symptoms can gym owners look out for to help recognize members struggling with mental health issues? This is not our typical episode of Prepare to Win. What started as a pre-podcast conversation became a full-fledge episode. We originally wanted to have a brief discussion about the Culture of Overhyped Winning that is seen on Instagram currently (emphasis on “brief”). We originally hit record in order to do a mic-check for the episode, and the next thing we knew we were 20 minutes deep into a conversation about the current state of social media delusions, building teams within your business, and finding ways to authentically promote yourself and your business. At a certain point towards the beginning, you can hear us make the decision to have this conversation be the actual episode. This is a perfect example of why Prepare To Win was started in the first place. Conversations like this are daily occurrences for us at Unrivaled Strength. We knew there was a high level of value for our members, listeners, and clients if they were able to be a part of these conversations. The podcast has always been intended to let our audience feel as if they were having the chance to sit in the room during the conversations that we wish we could have been a part of ourselves when we were starting out 10-15 years ago. That being said, please enjoy this very raw, real, uncut episode of Prepare To Win. Show Topics: 1. Building and growing the professional team (0:20) 2. The detriment of humility when promoting yourself (9:58) 3. Balancing authenticity with the need to market yourself and your business (18:04) 4. The misperceptions of consistency when presenting yourself in life and on social media (21:20) 5. The “Culture of So-Called Winning” (24:55) 6. The grounding effect of gratitude and providing value (37:00) 7. The delusion of social media followings (28:00) 8. You need to actually be good at something before you can provide value (55:00) 9. Providing value for a successful return (1:06:00) Announcements: 1. Dan Bell will be hosting a USAW Level 1 Coaching Course on June 5th and 6th at Unrivaled Strength in North Canton, Ohio. To be a competitive athlete, choosing your weightlifting coach is critical. You would like to improve your strength and conditioning and learn the proper lifting techniques from a skilled coach who fully understands the athletic experience. A good coach is someone who has a competitive experience and a genuine understanding of weightlifting training programming.  In today's episode of RX'D Radio, we're on the show with weightlifting coach Zack Telander to talk in detail about the world of weightlifting coaching as a profession. He also shares how he uses YouTube as a platform to provide informative content and to reach a wider audience. If you want to level up your training programming, don't forget to subscribe and tune in to RX'D Radio for the detailed discussion! About Our Guest Zack Telander is an outstanding coach in weightlifting, CrossFit, and to multiple sports at Texas A&M University and Northwestern University. Zack has a USAW-Level 2 coaching certification and is a weightlifting coach at Juggernaut Training Systems and Texas A&M. How Should Weightlifting Programming Look Like   Getting Into Weightlifting Zack grew up as an athlete in a very athletic home. Playing high school football drew him to the weight room. After graduating from the University of Vermont, he went to a CrossFit gym, and there he was inspired to be a coach. After he got his level one in CrossFit, he started to advance. In 2014, he started training with one of the coaches and did his first weightlifting meet. He eventually got his USAW-Level One and got a full-time job as a CrossFit coach. As a CrossFit coach, he was able to teach non-athletic people the "snatch, and the clean and jerk" on a high volume. The golden standard for getting into strength and conditioning is passing the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam. After passing the CSCS exam, he got an internship at Northwestern University and Texas A&M University. When he got into College Station, he started competing again on weightlifting and started personal training for profit. Using YouTube as a Platform In 2016, he started getting into YouTube. After a while, he started making and uploading CrossFit videos. After releasing his videos, a guy commented that there's no story in his content.  For Zack, he wanted to deliver his expertise and combat issues on the CrossFit community. He started writing and doing voice overs to try and give solutions to these problems. From 1,000 views, he has now reached almost 100,000 subscribers. Weightlifting Coaching as a Career He does remote coaching and coaching in-person. Physical coaching is essential for development. Actual interaction is critical in being a coach. Coaches have to know how to interact and how to calm people down. In terms of ROI, weightlifting coaching as a profession is always going to be relatively low. Most weightlifting coaches do it out of passion, but they have other sources of income. Remote Coaching and RPE You can get a lot stronger with low percentage squats. It's all about positioning and speed. Rate of perceived exertion or RPE is the rating on how hard you work. It's hard to perform a good rate with dynamic movements such as snatch, clean and jerk. Max Aita, the Head of Juggernaut Training Systems Weightlifting Coach, and Zack's mentor invented a scale for RPE. Zack, on the other hand, gives ranges with the eye. By following those rules, they can go as heavy or as light as they want. He uses these techniques to breed a culture in the gym and instill to people that he coaches. Ideal Movement The only real prescription for training is an ideal movement. Overload movements like poles or squats are heavier and more fatiguing than clean and jerk or snatch. There are many tricks you can do if your lifter is fatigued and is not feeling good instead of just putting in arbitrary percentages. When you introduce novelty, the person just forgets that they're lifting heavy. Periodization Models Block periodization: Working on one aspect of training; this can be (1) muscle building, (2) muscular endurance, and (3) strength. Concurrent periodization: Here, you're working on all three aspects, but you undulate the amount of intensity and load in each phase. Daily undulating periodization: If you stress the body, it needs time to recover. The real trick of programming is understanding how you can emotionally tap into the athlete without scaring them. Gauging System To gauge an athlete's performance, he watches them every day. The system is feedback; communicate consistently to athletes as a coach. Reporting fatigue is very hard for athletes, and it takes years of training to understand how to accurately and efficiently assess your own fatigue. You have to determine how many days you're going to implement stressors (e.g., very high intensities clean and jerk). As a coach, you have to see all the factors and what's happening and make the right adjustments unique to each athlete. Outlook on Programming Focus on the quality of the execution as the end goal. As an athlete, you have to take responsibility on how to regulate and make adjustments for yourself. You also have to be interested in experimenting, changing, and holding yourself accountable. Your coach is just there to guide you through all that. Zack works mostly with college students, and he realized they don't really understand a lot of these concepts. It is essential to be interested in the sport enough to learn about the simplest to the most complex terminologies. If athletes understand what they're getting into, they will not end up quitting. On today's episode my Weightlifting coach Dan Bell and I sat down to do a 2019 Arnold Sports Classic recap. We've been trying to find a date that works for both of us; but it took us a few weeks to actually be able to recap how the 2019 Arnold went. My team, Rubber City Weightlifting, did okay as a whole. We had eight lifters compete over the course of the weekend. Unfortunately only four of them posted a total. Two had to withdraw because of injury and the other two were unable to hit the lifts that they needed on that day. For me personally this was the biggest meet of my life. I needed to post a total of 250kg to qualify for the 2019 Master's World Weightlifting Championships. I've been struggling with a hip injury for the past year that the doctor's can't seem to figure out what's exactly wrong. This has left me mostly unable to squat for the past year. I came into the meet with a squat that was approximately 20kg less than what I needed to have the strength necessary to successfully lift the qualifying total. But you know me by this point; I'm going to give it hell no matter what. Dan Bell is the owner and head coach of Rubber City Weightlifting, an Olympic Weightlifting gym. Dan has over 30 years of experience in strength sports. Dan has been coaching Olympic Weightlifting for the past 19 years. He has coached athletes of all different skill levels and ages. From local meet lifters to national level lifters all the way to Olympic level lifter Holley Mangold. Dan and Holley were featured on the MTV show True Lift while Dan was preparing Holley for the 2009 Pan American Championships in Guatemala. Dan is not just a lifter and coach, he studied English from the Ohio State University. Dan has published the book “Nadir's Fire”, that you can find on Amazon. Dan is one of the top Olympic Weightlifting coaches in the country. He is very good at developing national level lifters from people with no prior lifting experience. Dan also teaches USA Weightlifting Level 1 coaches clinics a few times a year for people wanting to expand their knowledge of Olympic Weightlifting. If you are an aspiring strength coach you need to take one of his clinics. You can find Dan on Facebook and Instagram @RubberCityWeightlifting. You can visit his website at RubberCityWeightlifting.org. He has some great plans for jerk blocks on his website. People have been using his design for jerk blocks for years as they are some of the best available. Plus, they are free. We have back with us today is my Olympic Weightlifting coach Dan Bell of Rubber City Weightlifting. Dan also teaches USA Weightlifting Level 1 coaches clinics a few times a year. If you are an aspiring strength coach you need to take one of his clinics. Today we talked about progress in training vs. something fictional called maximal progress. We also talked about a new squat study that he read recently testing effectiveness of 1/4 squats (or bro squats), parallel squats and full range of motion (ass to calves) squats. It was interesting and I was a little surprised at the results of the study. We also talked about how to turn out 500 pound squaters and 400 pound benchers from high school athletes doing a revolutionary new program. Dan also brought up how excited he is for the new USAW Coach's Symposium. He's been asking for something like this for years. You can register for his USAW Level 1 coach's seminars at USAWeightlifting.org. He has two coming up. One is Cincinnati on May 19-20 and the second in Cranberry PA on June 2-3.       © 2018 Uncensored Humanity   Artwork by Kathryn Kidwell Intro music Rover by S Strong – available on Youtube audio library Outro music Whitestick by S Strong – available on Youtube audio library

Interview with JL Holdsworth & Nic Bronkall JL Holdsworth - Owner Nic Bronkall - Director of Strength & Conditioning The Spot Athletics Every time I travel to The Spot Athletics to met with JL Holdsworth and his staff, I learn a ton.  This time around, we filmed some plyometric videos with Nic Bronkall.  We also had an in depth discussion about weak muscle groups in the deadlift which forced my to review the basics of anatomy and physiology.  As usual, JL gave me some more drills and exercises to help with my weak points.  This time around, I got another drill to address my horrendous thoracic spine mobility issues using some bands. While talking to JL and Nic, it was evident of how much they are on the same page and how passionate they are about helping athletes achieve their goals.  Along with the rest of the staff, JL and Nic take pride in how and why they coach.  It is because of this universal disposition that The Spot Athletics is truly unique.    Topics Covered in this Podcast Rationale behind the Friday Technique Video series The internship process at The Spot Athletics Transitioning from the collegiate setting to the private sector Thoughts on conditioning The title of "Coach" Separating yourself Relationships with parents Assessing the needs of athletes Adapting programming from the assessment 5 drills or exercises every athlete should do 3 things you will never see The Spot Athletics' athletes do Specific skill vs. physical training  Articles by JL Holdworth Articles by Nic Bronkall JL Holdsworth's Training Log Nic Bronkall is the director of strength and conditioning at The Spot Athletics in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated with honors from Cleveland State University with a degree in health sciences with an emphasis on human factors and functions. He has also obtained his CSCS and USAW Level 1 sports performance certification as a coach. Nic worked under Tredell Doresy training and coaching a myriad Division I athletes. Nic also worked, for three years, as the strength and conditioning coach at a high school in north east Ohio. With a BA in Exercise Science from Wayne State, Masters work at University of Kentucky in Coaching, a USAW Level-1 coaching certificate and well over 20,000 hours of practical experience, JL Holdsworth is one of the most respected strength coaches in the industry. As a competitive powerlifter. JL has posted a 905 pound squat, 775 pound bench press, and 804 pound deadlift. He has also competed in mixed martial arts and grip competition.  He is the owner The Spot Athletics, where he works with athletes of all ages and sports disciplines. I believe in highly specific training for each clients’ goals, specific sporting demands and individual weaknesses.  Most trainers put together a cookie cutter program and give it to all their clients.  However, my lifelong endeavor to learn about the human body enables me to bring each person past what they thought was their physical limit.  My programs address all areas of strength, the appropriate energy systems and a systematic conditioning of the nervous system to handle increasing work loads.  This produces maximal results in minimal time.  I also believe that the Fascial planes are the gateway to a healthy body and through myofacial release and highly specific stretching this system is trained and improved.  This individualized, whole-system approach allows goals to be reached faster and athletic ability to improve beyond what most think is possible.
