NSCA Coaching Podcast – Season 8 Episode 1 – Since 1998, Bryan Mann has dominated strength and conditioning, securing positions at elite collegiate programs and defining research in strength, power, and velocity-based training (VBT). As the Academic Director of Strength and Conditioning at Texas A&M University, Bryan still gets the rewarding chance to shape students like his former athletes, but now, he’s focused on the future. He’s expanding his scope to human performance as a whole — applying his coaching expertise to advance performance across general, special, and tactical populations. Join NSCA Coaching and Sport Science Program Manager Eric McMahon as we follow Bryan’s professional path, including his recent transition to the Aggie’s powerhouse performance staff alongside Bo Sandoval and Tommy Moffit. Plus, explore pioneering research on Parkinson’s, the rise of individualization in VBT, and how to create a “forward” (not backup) plan for career longevity. [...] That’s what I really enjoyed. And I just use the weight room and jumps and sprints and everything as a vehicle for that.” 2:43 “You can take plyometrics and scale that to the aging population. That's going to help to the tightened isomers. That's going to help with the stored elastic energy that they're not getting depth through the resistance training. You could do all the heavy stuff you want. You can do all the fast stuff you want. But if you are not using the stretch-shortening cycle appropriately, you're not going to be influencing gait. You're not going to be influencing mobility appropriately.” 14:10 “Find what excites you. What do you think about at night? What do you think about in the morning? What is it that’s always on your mind? That’s the area you should explore [...] because that is what’s going to make you great.” 17:20 “If you have the ability to apply your skillset in another area, you just increased your ability within the job market to go ahead and apply that towards aging, towards general population.” 23:06 “The best ability is availability. And if I have my athletes out on the field feeling good, they’re going to be playing better than if they maintain 95% of their squat max.” 34:46

Velocity-based training has been gaining traction over the last few years as the technology becomes more affordable. Many of the resources out there, however, keep discussing the same old approaches to VBT. On this week's podcast we discuss some of the methods he has tried out and how they can be adapted to other sports. Some past episodes that talked about velocity-based training: Episode 15, Episode 17 with Bryan Mann, and Episode 221 with Simon Overkamp. We also discussed a different approach to the topic in this article. The topic of how Olympic lifting fits into the training of non-lifters has been a topic we’ve addressed on numerous occasions on this site. For all the talk about velocity-based training, in many cases the programs don't look that different than load-based programs in the end. Maybe a few kilos there or a bit more intent there. Does those differences matter? Simon Overkamp works with the top throwers and handball players in Germany and he joins us this week to take a look at some of the research he is doing on the topic and his best practices for velocity-based training. Overkamp works closely with René Sack, who has been a guest on Episode 79 and Episode 136. The latter episode touches on his own use of VBT. In addition, he went more in depth on the topic of VBT for special exercises in HMMR Classroom Lesson 16: Specific strength framework for throwing. We also covered velocity-based training by sharing our own thoughts on Episode 15 and learning from Dr. Bryan Mann on Episode 17. You can learn more from Mann in his book Developing Explosive Athletes: Use of Velocity Based Training in Training Athletes. We also have several articles on the topic on the site: using VBT in a Bondarchuk system, using VBT to monitor athletes, and finding speed targets.

Today’s episode features UW-River Falls strength coach Carmen Pata Carmen Pata, MS, CSCS*D, RSCC*D, a two-time nominee for the National Strength Coaches Association College Strength Coach of the Year, is the Director of Athletic Performance at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.  He has written two books, as well as articles for the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association, National Strength Coaches Association, Teambuildr, and the American College of Sports Medicine. Carmen is a practical coach who is well versed in the “art” of coaching, and particularly the art of doing so at a small University where the coach-athlete ratio is very small and the level of incoming athletes from a physical perspective demands creative solutions to preparation. A big reason I wanted to get Carmen on the show was the nature of his articles, being a mixture of experience intelligence and practicality.  Throughout this podcast, I enjoy talking about a diverse array of training methods.  It is always enjoyable to do episodes where we see how these training means are filtered into a training package, and in this case, 4-year training at a Division 3 school. In today’s episode, Carmen discusses the biggest things he is trying to get out of his athletes form a mental and physical perspective.  He also talks about how he instills confidence in the weightroom and how athletes need to “earn the barbell” in their first stages of the program.  Finally, we get into year-to-year training progressions and Carmen’s creative utilization of vision training for his athlete populations. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points The biggest thing that Carmen is trying to get out of the weightroom for his athletes How Carmen instills confidence in the weightroom How to “earn the barbell” in Carmen’s program Year to year strength training progressions and emphasis from Freshman to Senior years Carmen’s utilization of vision training in between his main training sets “The biggest thing I am trying to instill in the weight room is confidence, but if we are talking adaptation, it might sound trite, but… just get stronger” “One of the standing rules in the gym is that you are not allowed to say the words “I can’t” “If you can do things you never thoughts possible, that is the ultimate transfer from the gym to the playing field” “Before an athlete even touches the barbell, they have to earn the right to do that; that’s the first part of it, the second part of it is the RKC standard of 100 kettlebell snatches in 5 minutes” “Our freshman year is an intro, solving major movement issues.  Our sophomore year is getting as strong as you can.   Junior year is introduction to the true Triphasic ideas.  Going into their senior year of training, that is going to Bryan Mann’s velocity based stuff (this isn’t a hard line on year to year work as some athletes may progress through these slower or more rapidly)” “Most of the football players I work with want a big back squat, and good or bad, that’s what we do with them because it feeds into that program.  Our soccer team could care less about that 1RM back squat, they respond better to an escalating density style program” “(The use of the RKC kettlebell test for freshman) for some of these freshman, it is their first idea of what work really is” About Carmen Pata @carmenpata Carmen Pata, MS, CSCS*D, RSCC*D, a two-time nominee for the National Strength Coaches Association College Strength Coach of the Year, is the Director of Athletic Performance at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Today we are joined by Dr. Bryan Mann to confusion he sees with coaches today. The first thing he discusses is the idea that periodization is dead. Doc breaks down what periodization is and where the confusion is coming form because of vernacular. The main confusion in is what is periodization vs what is programming. Bryan started his career at the University of Missouri Department of Physical Therapy in 2012. Before this, he served as a strength & conditioning coach at the University of Missouri since 2004, and before that at Arizona State University, University of Tulsa, and Missouri State University. Mann is internationally renowned for his work in autoregulation of strength training, specifically with Velocity Based Training and the Autoregulatory Progressive Resistance Exercise method (APRE). Mann splits his time between teaching, researching in sports performance enhancement, working as the Research Director for the Human Performance Institute, and working as the Director for Performance Research with the Department of Athletics. Quotes “You get it at school because kids are cruel” “It all started because of a birthmark and inquisitive nature and progressed from there” “When I do that (increase eccentric strength), I see a huge increase in the athletes ability to change direction” “Some of the things that I think now, I would have laughed at in my younger days” “Mostly what I use the velocity (measures) for, is speed-strength & strength-speed” “For the VBT, I honestly think it does not matter what style you use, what matters is the feedback” “I will fight with them to make sure they get the extra repetitions in the gym… I really don't want to have to fight with them and make them do something before they even start” “When we started implementing velocity (VBT), we had an additional two years of increasing power” “If change of direction deficit is whack, then they’ll probably need more eccentric work” “Every time we have an (academic) test week, our HRV goes into the shitter” Shownotes 1) The ins and outs of APRE and where it comes from 17:35 2) How the APRE method fits into an athlete training continuum (1 x 20, APRE, Triphasic, Concurrent/Block, Bondachurk) 24:05 3) Bryan’s preference for linear position transducers (LPT) 29:23 4) Travelling with Gymaware and problems with airport security 33:08 5) Practical implementation of VBT with small and large groups, velocity and the Bosco strength continuum 36:25 6) Using velocity loss as markers of lifting quality to increase desired muscle cross sectional area and Werner Gunthor 44:14 7) The use of pre-training monitoring tests (hand dynos, CMJ, wellness questionnaire) and why he doesn’t use them anymore if they cant be embedded into the program 50:04 8) Underlying theory for improving speed in athletes e.g. rate coding and why absolute strength stops giving transfer after a certain period 54:13 9) Levels of absolute strength “needed” for athletes e.g. double bodyweight squat 1:00:06 10) Needs analysis for sports and Bryan’s testing battery (CMJ, IMTP, 10/20m, 505) 1:02:30 11) A low cost practical Force Velocity assessment 1:09:21 12) How getting piss drunk helped him stumble on the effects of mental stress on injury incidence 1:13:14 13) Christain Cantwell’s (Olympian Shot Putter) training exploits 1:26:40 People mentioned 1) Leo Matveyev 2) Michael Yessis @dryessis 3) Robb Rodgers 4) Rick Perry Chicago Bears 5) Joe Kenn @bighousepower 6) Pat Ivey 7) Dan Austin 8) Stephen Sayers 9) Mary-Beth Brown 10) Kendrick Knight 11) Thomas DeLorne 12) Yuri Verkhoshansky 13) Sophia Nimphius @docsoph 14) Cal Dietz @cal.dietz 15) Christian Cantwell 16) Natalia Verkhoshansky 17) Antoly Bondarchuk 18) Henk Kraajienhoff @henkkraaijenhof 19) Buddy Morris @buddymorris412 20) Tudor Bompa 21) Nick Gill @nicgill_health_and_performance 22) Werner Gunthor 23) Valerie Adams @valerieadamas84 24) Jeremy Sheppard @sheppardcoach 25) Tim Suchomel @drtsuchomel 26) Mike Stone 27) Phil Wagner @drphilwagner 28) Robert Newton @profrobnewton 29) Mike McGuigan @mike_mcguigan

"We have to stop and think and be realistic with ourselves about how many times we are actually dealing with freaks who are both completely advanced trained and elite level athletes." In today’s edition of My Thoughts Monday Dr. Bryan Mann discusses preparedness with us, and gives advices to coaches on how and when to look at using more advanced methods with their athletes. He starts out with anecdotical examples as to why, in his opinion, simpler may be better when it comes to developing many of the athlete's we work with. There needs to be reasons for coaches to implement more advanced means other than just because we, as coaches, may be bored. He then touches upon exact work he's doing with athlete's at the present moment, along with where some adaptations to program can come from when athlete's start to move forward. He finishes off discussing the role of testing in all of this when it comes to moving the athlete forward and gives some examples of tests he's used, along with why he selected these tests, and how they drive decisions. Do you have something to contribute? Then we want to know! Please, record your My Thoughts Monday and send it to us via DropBox to cvasps@gmail.com and get your thoughts on an episode. This week’s guest is Yosef Johnson, owner of Ultimate Athletic Concepts and performance coach with nearly 20 years of experience.  Many of the previous guests on the show, as well as contributors to Just Fly Sports, have been mentored by Yosef on Russian training methods and the work of Dr. Michael Yessis. Yosef has a blend of mentorship and communication from “The Big Three” in Russian Sport Peformance methodology (Dr. Bondarchuk, Yuri Verkhoshansky, Dr. Michael Yessis) that is probably unsurpassed by any performance coaches in the Western world.  Out of this knowledge and mentorship has come a wealth of knowledge that has trickled down into the methods and means of coaches at a growing number of NCAA institutions.  One of these methods that is gathering more and more notoriety is the 1x20 method, but Yosef also has great knowledge of special strength methods, biomechanics and long-term development amongst others. One of the main reasons I wanted to get Yosef on the show was that so many other guests I’ve had will point to Yosef as a mentor and consultant of theirs, so I really wanted to get to the source of all this great knowledge, and Yosef has been a conduit of the wealth of information, Soviet and otherwise, in this regard. On the show today, we’ll be talking about special strength training, long term development, maximal strength training in the scope of athleticism, and more. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Yosef’s background and mentorship Implementation of special strength exercises through an athlete’s career Yosef’s spectrum of special strength for building jumping ability for team sport Ideas on early intensification and long term development How to progress maximal strength work through an athlete’s career Yosef’s use of the 1x20 system, and subsequent training implications Quotes: “What Michael Yessis always told me if that if it’s taking a long time to recover from a workout, then the workout was too hard” “Early in an athlete’s career, general strength is more important, and as time passes, specific stuff is going to be more important, because the general has already run its course” “In the early stages, special strength is more for learning than it is for training” “We all know that there’s a limit to the amount of transfer we’ll go from a general exercise” “There is a finite transfer from general exercises onto performance.  There is no limit from performance onto specialized movements.  There is a point where getting stronger in the squat, the bench press or whatever, this isn’t going to help us anymore.” “Special strength is like throwing heavy or light hammers, or playing a team sport in weighted conditions, or running uphill/overspeed” “If you look at a volleyball player, a quarter squat for her or him is a specialized movement, especially if you are moving a weight like 60% of 1RM…. But for sports like swimming or golfing, for them it’s not specialized, it’s totally different” “Half squat (the first thing we use in our vertical jump development) is what we use, we normally don’t go any deeper than that” “I’d only be a fan of using Olympic lifts in the velocity based way, the way Bryan (Mann) uses them” “If we get an effect with a 12” box in depth jumps, and we’re not going to get a better effect with 24”, why would you go to 24”?” “Like Bondarchuk says, if you use something that’s more intense than you need, then you can never come back (to a lower intensity)” “Bondarchuk always said 90% (of a 1RM) is just too slow” “(Regarding 1x20 and Dr. Yessis) He wrapped everything up into one ball, into one set, in the early part of the year… and not only do you do all those things, but you do them better than any targeted program” About Yosef Johnson

This week’s guest is Dr. Bryan Mann of the University of Missouri (Mizzou). Dr. Mann is internationally renowned for his work in the autoregulation of strength training, specifically with Velocity Based Training and the Autoregulatory Progressive Resistance Exercise method (APRE). I’m really excited to have Dr. Mann on the show today.  You could say that this podcast can really be whittled down to one ideal: the development of athletic power.  Within the realms of developing power for the field of play, the intelligent utilization of barbell velocities is certainly something to invest one’s time in, given the time many athletes spent in the weightroom in modern physical preparation. In discussing bar speed from different performance specialists, from track and field, to powerlifting, to strength and conditioning, you’ll get different opinions across the board.  On one end, you have the thought that athletes get all the “speed monitoring” they need out on the track while sprinting and jumping, and don’t need the added “intensification” of monitoring the weightroom as well.  On the other hand, a good number of truly elite coaches who are producing gold medal athletes (for example, Rana Reider) enjoy using barbell tracking in the weightroom.  On the show today, I was excited to get Dr. Mann’s take on these variables in building top-end speed and jumping ability. Bar speed and VBT certainly isn’t the only area of sport performance Dr. Mann is an expert in, and on the show today, we talk about a large number of sports performance topics, such as the neural and muscular adaptations to power training, muscle fiber types and adaptations, squat depth, training and athlete’s strength vs. weaknesses, and more. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Things that Bryan has learned or refined in the last several years in terms of barbell velocity monitoring Thoughts on using bar speed monitoring for sports such as track and field where “big rocks” are already being monitored out on the track How force adaptations occur on the neural and muscular level Approaching training athlete’s strengths vs. weaknesses Using bar speed and VBT to train selective hypertrophy Muscle fiber types and training adaptations Squat depth and angular specificity in light of VBT regulations Using average vs. peak velocity for various lifts Good VBT tagged lifts for vertical leap enhancement Ideas on the use of bar speed tracking in yearly periodization and planning Thoughts on complex training Quotes: “If it’s indiscriminate hypertrophy you want, I don’t even use the tendo” “Barbell velocity monitoring is only for the “big rock” type exercises…. On my throwers workout I had 3 exercises that utilized velocity” “Squatting is a general means for a sprinter” “The group that received the (bar speed) feedback (on only the squat jump, one exercise in an entire weekly training program) saw far greater adaptations (than the group who had no feedback)” “(In working with throwers) To be blunt, the greater the (bar) velocity, the farther the throws were” “I don’t like getting tied down to exercises like I used to…. The more I look at things from the 35,000 foot view, it’s more about the specificity than the general.  Don’t get me wrong, there is a need for GPP, but there is a time for more specific work to be implemented” “There’s two force adaptations on the muscle side and two on the neural side.  On the neural side you got Henneman’s size principle, where you’re preferentially recruiting high threshold motor units, and you got rate coding, which is what velocity based training really helps with, with the intra and intermuscular coordination”   “All four things to maximize force production and transfer need to be in the program” “If you need the super,
