In this Contacts Coaching Podcast episode, host interviews Nate “Blackjack” Pototschnik, associate director of strength and conditioning for BYU football, about his path from the U.S. Military Academy to flying helicopters for 10 years, deploying twice to Afghanistan, and using GI Bill benefits to earn a master's in exercise physiology at the University of Virginia. Nathan shares why he left the cockpit for coaching, how success habits built his confidence, and how trusting his gut and prioritizing family guided career decisions when coaching opportunities shifted. He explains what transferred from aviation to coaching (explicit vs tacit learning, staying calm under pressure), discusses not tying self-worth to wins and losses, and outlines strength-and-conditioning priorities: movement quality screening, full-range training preferences, power clean vs full clean, building culture through standards, objective feedback and competition, staff alignment, and maintaining daily relationship touchpoints with athletes.00:00 Meet Coach Blackjack00:40 From 9/11 to Coaching03:27 Betting on Yourself05:22 Confidence and Gut Calls10:04 GI Bill Explained11:59 Combat Pilot Lessons16:51 Staying Detached from Outcomes18:50 Weight Room Priorities24:08 Movement Screening Basics26:52 Full Depth vs Quarter Squats29:33 Power Clean vs Full Clean31:03 Be Ready Before Promotion33:20 Head Coach Time Demands35:48 Hiring and Coaching Trees38:58 Healthy Dissent Culture43:07 BYU Grouping and Mods44:25 Testing Buckets and Profiles47:08 Freak Athletes and Standards49:10 Environment and Competition52:33 Leadership Lessons and Alignment55:10 Building Relationships at Scale56:40 Strength Coaches as Conduit57:58 Wrap Up and Next Round
In this episode of the Samson Strength Coach Collective, Jess Kinder, Senior Associate Athletic Trainer at Appalachian State University, joins the show to unpack one of the most overlooked dynamics in sports performance: the relationship between the strength coach and the athletic trainer.Jess shares how her background in athletic training shaped her athlete-first approach and why trust and communication are essential when performance staffs work together. She explains where this relationship can break down, often through poor communication, ego, or a lack of respect for each other's expertise, and how strong collaboration can directly improve athlete health, recovery, and performance. The conversation also explores rehab philosophy, common basketball injuries, long-term athlete care, and the importance of teaching athletes how to take ownership of their bodies. From daily communication to return-to-play decisions, Jess offers a practical look at what it takes for support staff to truly function as one team. The relationship between strength coaches and athletic trainers can directly impact athlete health and performance.Poor communication, ego, and a lack of trust are often what make this relationship break down.Great performance staffs respect professional boundaries while still working closely together.Foundational rehab and simple training principles still matter most.Athletes benefit most when everyone around them is aligned on the same message.“At the end of the day, neither of us have jobs without the athletes.”Key TakeawaysQuote

Hewitt Tomlin turned a simple insight as a college quarterback into a global performance platform. At Johns Hopkins University, he and his roommate James Peters saw teammates juggling paper workout packets while carrying iPhones in their pockets. That moment sparked TeamBuildr, a platform built to make coaches more effective, athletes more accountable, and performance programs more connected.Today, TeamBuildr powers more than 5,000 programs worldwide, from high schools to the Denver Nuggets and Tennessee Titans. Bootstrapped and independent, the company has grown to 50 employees and nearly $10M in annual revenue. For Hewitt, the mission is bigger than business. TeamBuildr helps coaches prove their value, align departments, and elevate strength training as the most important classroom for confidence, health, and performance. Or as Hewitt puts it, “Wherever athletes and coaches train, we want to be there.”Hewitt's mission is to transform the weight room into the most impactful classroom in every school and community. Through TeamBuildr, we equip coaches with powerful tools to program efficiently, track progress, and connect training with wellness and performance. By elevating the role of the coach and democratizing access to strength training, we are building a future where confidence, health, and resilience are within reach for everyone.LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/teambuildr-llc/Instagram - @teambuildrX - @teambuildrHewitt Tomlin ContactEmail: hewitt@teambuildr.comLinkedIn: Hewitt TomlinWebsite: teambuildr.comWant to create live streams like this? On this episode of the podcast we have the man the myth the twitter troll Keir Wenham-Flatt – Keir is a former strength coach where he used his expertise in the field to found The Strength Coach Network an educational platform for all things Strength Coaches after years of educating strength coaches he continually came back to the question “what do they actually need” and realized “Financial Freedom” was the biggest missing link in their professional and personal lives - which has led to his current creation of The Strength Coach Money Moves Course and today on the podcast he takes us deep down into the rabbit holes of how to make money moves – why the field is struggling to do so and actional steps to develop this freedom we are all searching for! This was an amazing podcast with a true inspiration to me in this field and I can't recommend his course enough. I took it almost a year ago now and it changed the way I looked at my business. The best I can describe it is the First three weeks covered everything I smashed my head against the wall learning for 5 years in the field – the next three weeks showed me what I need to be doing for these next 5 and the last three weeks showed me just where I could take this thing when it's all said and done – I really truly can't recommend it enough - if you are looking for more information on the course I added a link to take it in the bio of this pod! Topics The college strength coaching system is flawed and doesn't reward performance. It's about politics and climbing the ladder. To have freedom and escape coercion, you need independent wealth and assets that produce cashflow. Online training requires constant entertainment and sizzle to keep people engaged long-term. Can't just rely on results. True innovations in sports training get banned or regulated. Incremental improvements are all that's left. You have to grab attention on social media, even if it outrages some. Better than indifference. Keir realized the college system didn't reward performance. It was political and about climbing the ladder. He tried to win the game but eventually wanted more freedom and optionality. Realized he needed independent wealth from assets and cashflow, not a salary. Keir started educating coaches online to solve problems he saw. Realized improving education wasn't the fastest way. Making money was the real issue. Online training requires entertainment and sizzle over time, not just results. True innovations get banned or regulated. All that's left is incremental improvements. Need fields like tech where 10x improvements are possible, unlike human performance. Better to evoke strong reactions on social media than be ignored. Outrage and entertainment grabs more attention. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/austin-jochum/support

This EP features a former professional footballer turned performance coach, Paul Webb. After injury caused him to retire, Paul traveled the world to qualify as one of the first Strength Coaches in the UK. He set up his own facility and spent almost twenty years coaching athletes, of all levels (weekend warriors to Olympic and world champions) from all over the world.Paul decided a few years ago that running the gym that had been successful for almost two decades no longer served his purpose. He began coaching clients on their own path to spiritual awakening. Drawing on years of experience both in his own life and through working with thousands of clients, Paul traveled worldwide working with Hollywood actors, entrepreneurs, CEOs, Olympians, and royalty, helping all achieve success levels that far exceeded what they expected. If you liked this EP, please take the time to rate and comment, share with a friend, and connect with us on social channels IG @Kingopain, TW @BuiltbyScott, LI+FB Scott Livingston.
