Shellie Baxter started Our Genetic Legacy (OGL) in 2018 in response to her frustration with the lack of recognition and the disenfranchisement of BIPOC Americans in American history. OGL creates projects that expose and publish lost family legacies of BIPOC Americans in order to diversify, correct and expand the current history of the United States to include all Americans. Ms. Baxter's own family legacy story, knowing the struggles her ancestors overcame for her to even exist, ignites her passion to help others find their legacy. Under the umbrella of OGL, Shelli has world tirelessly to produce “We The People: Teaching U.S. History Through the Ancestral Stories of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.” This textbook is a 100% BIPOC-authored and edited U.S. history book written by the BIPOC pioneers of the U.S. It will be the first U.S. history book that uses DNA to integrate the stories of everyday BIPOC into the official storyline of the United States of America. Additionally, in 2023, she will be launching We The People (a virtual museum), where they will be introducing a design contest for a $10,000 prize. Additional details can be found here. Exhibitions of historical sites significant in BIPOC California history will be produced by the DRONe Project, Descendants Recovering Our Names, a paid workforce development program. The program was created for young women ages 16 to 18 living in San Diego, Calif. who want to become drone pilots and work as digital historic preservationists skilled in the use of LiDAR-enabled drones. LiDAR uses lasers and light to create visual images of the earth's surface that are invisible to the naked eye. Participants will use the same technology that was used by National Geographic to recover lost Mayan civilizations in Guatemala. Additional information can be found here. They are currently accepting applications for 20 spots. Applications must be confirmed through an online interview process and the application period will remain open until the confirmed capacity is reached. Lastly, Shellie runs The History Makers' Workshop, and will begin conducting workshops with 8th- and 11th-grade students beginning late June 2022 at Hoover High School in partnership with First Gen Scholars. Cade York is the field goal kicker for Louisiana State University (LSU), and Will Reichard is the kicker for the University of Alabama. Both represent the finest kicking talent in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and are considered two of the best kickers in college football. In 2020 the SEC was stacked with talented kickers. York was named 1st Team All-SEC and Anders Carlson (Auburn University) was named 2nd Team All-SEC, and Harrison Mevis (Mizzou) was named 1st Team Freshman All-SEC. Reichard was left out, but so was Evan McPherson (University of Florida) and Jack Podlesny (University of Georgia.) Both York and Reichard were named semi-finalists for the 2020 Lou Groza Award which is an annual award given to college football’s top kicker. Reichard was named one of three Lou Groza Finalists with Jake Oldroyd (Brigham Young University) and the 2020 Lou Groza Award winner, Jose Borregales (University of Miami.) How does the Simple Kicking Index rank Cade and Will? Let’s start with the Reichard, who was the kicker for the 2021 CFP National Champions. Reichard had a breakout season in 2020 after an injury-plagued 2019 . He made 14/14 Field Goals with a Long of 52, and 84/84 PATs. A 100% season on field goals and extra points. Based on the distances of his kicks, the Simple Kicking Index determined that Reichard performed 12.65 points above expected which ranks 3rd overall. York, who was the kicker for the 2020 CFP National Champions ranked #2 overall. He made 18/21 field goals, including 6/7 from 50+. The Simple Kicking Index determined that York performed 13.86 points above expected. The Simple Kicking Kicker of the year was Jose Borregales who kicked 14.76 points better than expected. How does this compare to the previous 4 seasons? Both were in the top 20. Cade ranks #10, and Will ranks #17. Other kickers who are on the list are: Riley Patterson, University of Memphis, NFL Free Agent Matt Gay, University of Utah, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Rams (he made the list twice!) Cole Tracy, LSU, NFL Free Agent Sam Sloman, Miami University (Ohio), Los Angeles Rams, Tennessee Titans Andre Szmyt, Syracuse University Jose Borregales, University of Miami, Florida International University Tyler Bass, Georgia Southern, Buffalo Bills Keith Duncan, University of Iowa, NFL Free Agent Nick Sciba, Wake Forest University Gabe Brkic, University of Oklahoma Rodrigo Blankenship, University of Georgia, Indianapolis Colts Jonathan Song, TCU, NFL Free Agent Dominik Eberle, Utah State, Las Vegas Raiders Cade York was a key asset to the LSU Tigers National Championship team led by Coach Ed Orgeron, and he improved in 2020. York was 7.63 points better than expected in 2019 making 21/26 field goals. He improved by 6.21 point year over year. This is like saying Michael Jordan averaged 30 points one season, and 35 points the next season. Both are really good, but he continues to improve. Reichard was hurt in 2019 and bounced back in 2020. But resilience is nothing new to Reichard. During his career at Hoover High School in Hoover, Alabama he suffered a torn ACL. He bounced back then earned a scholarship offer to the University of Alabama and started school shortly in January 2019. This episode covers what it is like to get recruited as a kicker. Reichard and York were both highly ranked in high school. In fact, York who graduated from Prosper High School in Prosper, TX, kicked a 59 yard field goal in the Under Armour All-America Game. Also, we cover how Coach Nick Saban and Coach Jeff Banks recruited Reichard out of Hoover. They explain how they got their college scholarships, what it is like winning a national championship, and how they feel playing in a game like LSU vs. Alabama every year. York recalls his 57 yard game winner against the University of Florida at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in the fog.

Their two daughters are twins, and are seniors at Hoover High School. Their son is soon to turn 13. Mrs. Lewis and her family love to spend summers on their boat and on the beach. While there you will probably catch her reading her favorite romance novel. Reading time is an opportunity to escape from all that is going on. Being the hopeless romantic she loves to keep Nicolas Sparks employed. During the school year she reads articles and studies pertaining to her area of expertise. She seeks out knowledge to help teach her students. Mrs. Lewis spends all of her free time watching her kids compete in sports. Her daughters are avid swimmers and divers, and her son plays football and other sports. Amy is most looking forward to getting things back to normal this year. She is so excited to having kids back in the classroom full time. Mrs. Lewis has been teaching for 26 years, and every one of those years has been in Tallmadge City Schools. Her life quote is "Do Everything in love," (1 Corinthians 16:14), and as a scientist and environmentalist, “The Greatest threat or our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” Sit back and enjoy this conversation with Mrs. Lewis. It was recorded before a live, socially distanced, small classroom. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-horner/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mark-horner/support

In his eleven seasons with Los Angeles he went to three Pro Bowls. At the time of his retirement, Ellard held Rams' team records for career receptions (593), receiving yards (9,761), 100-yard games (26), punt return average (11.3), and total offense (11,663). Upon joining the Redskins, Ellard set off on a blistering pace for the 1994 season, ending it with 1,397 yards, 102 behind league-leader Jerry Rice. He had three consecutive 1,000 yard seasons, giving him seven for his career (his 799 yards in the strike-shortened 1987 season was on pace for an eighth). His final 1,000 yard season came in 1996 and required a 155-yard performance against the Dallas Cowboys second-ranked defense to push him to 1,014 yards for the season. After his retirement, Henry became an assistant coach at Southern California Christian High School, then became an assistant track-and-field coach at Villa Park High School. iTunes Stitcher Google Spotify During this episode of Ahead of the Curve, I interviewed Adam Moseley, Head Baseball Coach at Hoover High School in Hoover, Alabama. Coach Moseley, who was awarded as the World Champion 2018 USA Baseball 15u Pitching Coach, offers an informative discussion about what it takes for him to develop fantastic pitchers, establishing the team culture for new players, getting to know his players better, Episode Highlights: How did Adam Moseley get involved in baseball? What does Adam’s fall training season look like? What has Adam Moseley done to be able to develop great pitchers? What type of environment does Adam set up to integrate new players into the team culture? Are there any specific things that Coach Moseley requires his players to do? What are some different strategies for getting to know each player better? How does he develop his assistant coaches? What are some different things that Adam does during interviews of potential hires? What different rules and standards does he have in his program? What does a typical spring training plan look like? How does Coach Moseley deal with parents or players complaining about playing time? What advice does Adam have for first-year head coaches? What is the latest thing that he has learned that he is excited about? What is something that he does in practice that his players love? What is something that he believes that other coaches may disagree with? What are three things that would stand out during Coach Moseley’s baseball practices? What are some of Adam’s favorite books and resources that he has learned the most from? 3 Key Points: Coaches have to be able to trust their kids. Coach Moseley talks to each player every two weeks and keeps an updated chart of all of his players where he adds the date and discussions he has had with them. If winning isn’t fun, then why are you doing it? Tweetable Quotes: “I’ve been at Hoover (High School) for five years. This will be my 6th year, and we’ve had a pretty fun run here. We’ve had a lot of college players and a lot of great young men that we’ve been able to coach.” – Adam Moseley “In Alabama, we have some different rules, I know every state does. Essentially, we can spend as much time as we want in strength training and conditioning with our kids. There really isn’t a limit on that.” – Adam Moseley “We hire out a company called Godspeed. The guy’s name is Lance Rhodes and he started this business years ago. He is a Hoover graduate. Almost every NFL guy that lives in Birmingham, it seems like, trains with him.” – Adam Moseley “The best athlete on the mound means that in the 7th inning of the biggest game of the year he’s able to make the adjustment that he has to make to get the guy out, whether it is all working for him, or it is not.” – Adam Moseley “If you are doing the same drills for everybody, 25% of them are getting better, 25% of them are not getting any better, 25% are getting worse, and 25% are hurt.” – Adam Moseley “Any time you start sharing sweat, and you are all sweating together, I think the culture builds right away.” – Adam Moseley “First and foremost, I think it goes into who you are hiring. You need to hire guys that fit the development profile that you are looking for. I want to hire a guy that wants to be a life-long learner.” – Adam Moseley “I’m not a big, giant ‘rule sheet’ guy. Our program is not full of tons of rules. To me, the more rules you put out there, the more that they start looking for ways they can get around them.” – Adam Moseley Resources Mentioned: Ahead of the Curve Podcast Twitter: @AOTC_podcast Adam Moseley: Linkedin Twitter Facebook Instagram Adam Moseley’s Email: AMoseley@Hoover.K12.AL.US
Michael Ryan joined me to share his incredible story battling for his life after sustaining a brain injury in a high school football game. His story is about facing great challenges and finding the will deep inside to fight and emerge victorious. He retraced his life up to the point of the injury, the football game detail of the hit, and the tremendous number of obstacles he had to overcome in his recovery. He was literally on the edge of losing his life as doctors struggled to stop the hemorrhage. Complications led to further problems in his gut and additional surgeries. But he set goals, he fought hard and he persevered. Mike’s podcast ended up being much more than a football story. It was his own auto biography. Mike Ryan grew up in San Diego in an ethnically mixed family and a racially mixed neighborhood. His childhood home often was a place of alcoholism and violence. But he found support from his extended family and a close-knit group of friends in his community. Mike shared stories about his father’s struggle with PTSD, his mother’s Jehovah Witness faith and the support he received from his grandmother and siblings. We went down memory lane reliving stories from his days at Hoover High School, the special moment when he met his wife Galit and their marriage nearly 24 years ago. Mike spoke at length about his love of his family and shared many entertaining family stories involving Galit and his children Tommy and Sarah. Mike Ryan is a Poway resident, author, family man, sports fan, martial artist and a Datsun car enthusiast. His book The Heart of the Lion is available on Amazon. Beth Richey-Sullivan discusses strategies for surviving the most perilous of choir director jobs: taking over a program from a rockstar. When your predecessor is both beloved and skilled, the incoming director needs “the skin of an elephant and the heart of a butterfly.” This episode is full of jaw-dropping examples that Beth culls from this past year of taking over from an adored former director. Her warmth, encouragement, and wisdom is required listening for anyone stepping into a new job. Listen: Highlight to Tweet: “You need to have the skin of an elephant, and the heart of a butterfly.” -Beth Richey-Sullivan Show Notes: Be transparent with your administration, both in your needs and expectations. You need the skin of an elephant, and the heart of a butterfly (Be tough-skinned, but tenderhearted). Beth and her husband have fostered 13 children over three years, many of whom deal with their pain with outwardly aggressive behavior. “See their behavior as their pain.” “I will treat you with respect, so that you know how to treat me.” It’s a long game, but worth the extra time it takes. Beth has a history of dealing with kids with trauma. When a director leaves, it is a loss for them. You're dealing with a traumatic situation. 3 Key Takeaways: Do the best you can, and realize the eye rolls aren’t about you. See their behavior as their pain.
